    There's a point you missed, I think, that makes an action scene badass: the story shouldn't stop because of the action scene. In this Kingsman's scene, we learned three things:
    -Valentine's sim cards make people go crazy.
    -It is linked to sound and your ability to hear the sound.
    -Harry is an incredibly skilled killer and should absolutely be feared, Kingsman's training is not a joke.

    One of the many things I love about the church scene fight is that it remembers why the fight is happening in the first place. Confused? Let me explain.
    If you have seen Kingsman, then you are aware that the bad guy in the film, Valentine, has given out free sim cards to the public that give out free wifi and free calls. These sim cards, however, are just a front as they are really designed to set off a high pitched signal that interferes with the brain and causes people to become berserk and kill each other. The film remembers that it's the noise signal that causes people to become crazy, even during the fight scenes. During the infamous Church Fight, Harry pulls out one of his lighter grenades and shoves it into the pocket of a person he then proceeds to kill. However, as he moves onto the next person, he gets caught in the blast radius and gets knocked down. The blast causes his ears to ring, and for a few seconds he STOPS FIGHTING, as he realises and questions what he's doing. When the ringing leaves and he can once again hear the signal, he goes crazy again and starts to kill people again. This type of continuity is why Kingsman is amazing.

      Jack OfAllTrades Wow great observation! For all the times i rewatched it, i didnt even notice (im so ashamed). I just assumed that he was disoriented by the blast. I watched the whole clip just now and he did look disoriented for a moment even though he looked so sure and confident with his actions in his rampage. It. All. Makes. Fucking. Sense.
      Man this scene is just so amazing im still shookt. Thank you so much for sharing!!!

    I think action scenes are badass when the hero actually has a challenge. In john wick, even though he killed an army of guards and assassins he didnt do it easily, he got shot, beat up, and stabbed but still made it, samething with the kingsman, he literally got stabbed in the back. When i see a movie where the main protagonist is killing so many minions without a scratch or problem it makes it boring to watch because there no action without challenges or surprises

    The Church Scene is a brilliant display of work arounds working right. From unique and non-intrusive cuts like you pointed out to the shaky cam actually working to sell the hazy rage that Valentine was using to try and kill Galahad/Harry
    It FELT like a 3rd person beat-em-up game with the panning camera and like a novice player dumped in a chaotic late game fight he wasn’t perfect due to both the massive amount of combatants and the fact he wasn’t thinking straight.

    All action scenes need to tell a story, need to be able to be read like a book, and need to be character motivated. If you don't know why they're fighting, how the fight is going down, or who is fighting, why on earth would you care?

    • @AaronField
      @AaronField  6 років тому +54

      Agreed. However where a lot of young filmmakers fail I think is the assumption that the fight is the whole story. A fight is not the story, the fight is a result of the story. When shooting fight scenes and action, context is everything. You're definitely right, without context and stakes, the scene will ultimately fail. While I would include this as one of the main reasons Kingsman succeeded with their scene, I feel every scene, regardless of if it's action or not should always be plot and character motivated. Solid point, thanks for watching, man!

    • @felixweber6469
      @felixweber6469 6 років тому +24

      I liked your analysis about the "technical" aspects of the fight scene. But I wish you would have included your statement from above, that character motivation and story are a big part. Especially in Kingsman it is the context. We meet Harry as a disciplined man and in this scene he lets loose. It was so unexpected and the pure chaos, insanity and exaggeration contrast his character so well.
      The scene would be 10 times less good/exciting/entertaining, if it was not Harry, but a "Jason-Bourne" charakter without this contrast.

    • @AaronField
      @AaronField  6 років тому +10

      Definitely agree with you. However I didn't include this in the video because that's simply things that should be in ANY scene not just fight scenes. All scenes should be story motivated and reveal something or pay something off. Might dive into elements of a good scene sometime later in another video though :) thanks for watching!

      @KennethLyVideography 6 років тому +1

      The scene also has another thing going for it. The sheer shock factor and feeling of emotional dissonance. You feel so much catharsis over the shitheads at the church getting brutally murdered but the violence gets so ramped up it's starting to feel like to much combine that with seeing a massacre in what usually serves as place of spirituality you get so many emotions at play. It's incredible the feeling of utter glee and badassness and the feeling of wrongness and excess makes it this one of the best action scenes ever. It's what I felt was missing in the sequel fights. However I find the last fight in Kingsmans 2 to be even better on a technical level.

    Now that you've explained fight scenes, how would you explain larger scale battle scenes like the ones we would see in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, especially in terms of what makes them epic or how (music, set up, etc)? I guess we can also go broader and ask what makes a scene or moment in a movie "epic" and how is this achieved?

      In a battle scene, Im most interested in that the movie manages to convey what is going on at any given moment, say Battle of Helms deep from LotR, even though its chaotic, the viewer has a clear picture of what is going on and where the good guys and the bad guys are as the orcs push further into the fortress. Battle of the bastards has a similar effect where the battle is cut into beats so to make it more comprehensible.
      Bad battle scenes is where you see the sides run at each other and the whole thing descends into a random mass brawl with no real structure. Which is not only unhistorical for historical movies, but also detrimental to the viewer who has no clue what is going on.

    The thing that also made the church fight so good is that Harry didn’t do it perfectly. He got hit and shot and felt the impact of it instead of just dusting it off like a superhero would, but then quickly calculates a way to get back at the person trying to kill him. Also the fact that Harry didn’t just use his gun, he used pieces of the actual church and his gadgets in really inventive ways.

    I didn't see the movie. Is the lower framerate actually in it? It looks like they increased the camera's shutter speed to the point where they captured relatively little motion blur, and then left each image up a little longer so your brain has time to register it. If that's the case, that's pretty smart. It makes you feel more involved by giving you more detail to process, and gives you just enough time for your brain to actually try. It's a pretty clever way to make your brain speed up it's processing and make the scene more exciting that way.

    • @AaronField
      @AaronField  6 років тому +75

The whole theater was in shock. It steps up the violence to such a degree with absolutely no warning, and yet you just can't look away. Stunned silence was the reaction. Yup, that's the eye of a fellow martial artist.
    I know nothing about filmmaking, but I practiced Taekwondo as well, for roughly 8 years, and yeah, in action sequences you can sort of pinpoint where and how they they used actual combat techniques and in which movies/scenes they're just improvising punches and using cheap cam tricks to compensate.
    Usually matrial-arts based fighting scenes look awesome and with continuity because in exhibitions at tournaments you have to do entire 3 - 6 minute routines on the spot, there's no editing nor cutting on reality, so a well trained martial artist, tends to be good at staging or directing long/continous sequences! Which look damn cool!

    Nice video, man! Always good to see an up-and-coming video essayist. Only thing I'd disagree with here is the idea that the soundtrack when the Avengers assemble is unmemorable. The theme of Avengers is memorable but the overall score lacks the same level of depth and distinctiveness as for example The Last Samurai or Gladiator, both of which (other than being scored by Hans Zimmer) have multiple stand-out tracks, and are instantly recognizable as belonging to their respective films. With a Marvel movie about 70% of the score is indistinct, and the impact of this is that you can't point out which song or moment is where.

    • @GreenlandicGuy
      @GreenlandicGuy 6 років тому +20

      Iconic? It sure is.
      Memorable? Yeah, to a point. The circling of the team, with the Avengers theme on top of it, was probably one of the most defining moments in movie history.
      But the rest of the sequence is more or less forgettable, because of the generic nature of the soundtrack.

    The church scene in Kingsman will always be my favorite scene in any movie ever

  • @jmalmsten
    @jmalmsten 6 років тому +44

    One of the biggest omissions here for me was the motivational foundation of these decisions. Action scenes tell mini stories, the great ones are like the best musical numbers. They have plenty of setup. They are filled with tension of what will happen if something does or does not happen. The setup in that church scene is just downright masterful.
    All characters have their goals and Harrys and Valentines goals are in conflict. As audience members on first viewing we may only know that Valentine is there to test out... Something. What? Don't know, but it's been well established that while he can't stand the sight of blood, he is no stranger to orchestrating acts of heinous violence and death. So whatever it is he's planning it'll be a spectacle. The audience anticipates this because of the setup.
    Harry is there to investigate what Valentine is planning. We know that he is capable of great physical feats and acrobatics and he is well established as a gentleman spy that can get out of mostly any combat situation with style and bravado that puts double-O's to shame. Again. All set up before the scene.
    The southern baptist church goers are new in the film, but here crass stereotyping works in the filmmakers favour. We know this kind of crowd. All of them angry, armed and brimming with persecution complexes. Itchy trigger fingers in the best of days. This is what is in the setup too as the obstacle for Harry. But as he is the gentleman, he won't draw first blood unless severly provoked.
    All of that work is there before Harry does his quip and starts to leave. Before the action actually starts. It is like bricks of dominoes or a Rube Goldberg machine. You watch the set up of all the bits and pieces. You get to anticipate it. You may not know the magnitude, but you know something big is coming. Then, and only then can a great and bad ass action scene start. And the result? We get to see what a Kingsman is capable of when restraints are removed.
    And that scene is glorious because of it.
    Then it had severe repercussions on the remaining movie. The spectators understand ghe scope of the plan, Harry is removed by a bullet to the eye after being appalled by his bodys action and Eggsy is thrust back into his role as a Kingsman and he's just seen the size of the shoes he needs to fill.
    So many so called action filmmakers seemingly care so little about how important these connective tissues are to make an action beat sing.

    • @AaronField
      @AaronField  6 років тому +5

      you're definitely right, however motivational foundation is essential for ANY scene not just action scenes. Action scenes are the result of a story they aren't the whole story themselves. A think the real flaw action filmmakers have, especially those doing short films is that they think the action scenes is the whole story. It isn't. Action scenes carry the themes, motivations and super objective of the whole film while having their own objectives and arcs. You don't have to tell the whole story or have context for the scene if you can allude to it and still let your audience connect somehow emotionally.
      Motivational foundation was one of the things that was purposefully omitted, not because it isn't important but it's definitely something ANY scene in ANY film should have. Working on a video that'll actually be diving into this a bit.
      Thanks for watching and commenting :)

    That's an interesting breakdown. I can't imagine how hard it would be to plan, rehearse and then shoot something like that church fight scene. How many person/hours did it take? How many injuries happened? How many days to shoot? I bet you could make ten low budget films for the cost of that one scene.
    (Did you hear about the death of stuntman John Bernecker on the set of _The Walking Dead_? I still hate the movie _Twilight Zone_ because it killed Vic Morrow. Then there's Charlize Theron's multiple visits to the dentist as a result of doing her own stunts in _Atomic Blonde_. I wonder if it's really necessary to have so much violence in our entertainment? The best thing I've seen in years is _This Is Us_ on TV ... and it has *NO* violence. Maybe it's just me getting old. :)

      Very true points. A lot of productions outsource their stunts to different teams, and a lot of action sequences in major films are actually not directed by the main director but a 2nd unit director who specializes in stunts. For example the final showdown in Logan was done by the team behind John Wick and Atomic Blonde. So I assume while the main team does have a lot of the responsibility of early conception, a stunt team is choreographing and prepping alongside the shooting schedule.
      I did hear about John Bernecker, and it's really unfortunate the things that have happened in the pursuit of stunts. Makes me really respect the people who are willing to do them and appreciate how passionate or crazy (or both) you have to be to go into a field like that. Funny note: apparently the only reason Charlize Theron had to go to the dentist was she was clenching her jaw too hard during a take. Interesting how some injuries get blown up by the tabloids haha.
      I agree with you that some of the best content is that WITHOUT violence. I included a scene in the beginning from Fate of the Furious which even though it has some great action sequences it truly was not a good movie. I think Master of None was one of the best shows in the past few years which like This is Us isn't a show hinged on violence. I think we won't ever stop seeing violence as a mainstream element for films and tv. Like I mentioned, it's a cathartic break from the normal or mundane. People crave to see what they don't in their normal lives. It'll only get old when violence is the norm for us in our everyday lives (some would argue we're already there), and I'd definitely rather have it just stay on screen for awhile.
      Thanks for watching!
