Power/flow wise, yes that's correct, X pipes do allow for better flow at high rpms, which is why they're so popular in this age of peak-power-at-any-expense (aka Instagrammable dyno numbers). But H pipes were far more common even just 20 years ago, even in JDM platforms - and aside from sounding much deeper, they make low- and mid- range power that is more useful on the track.
The H-pipe for most modern cars give it a more muscular sound, while the x-pipe will be more raspy, in addition with an H pipe, you have plenty of low-end torque, whereas with an x pipe you lose low-end torque, but you gain it at the top end
Perfectly said! It's mostly the HP gains are in the upper RPM for the X-Pipe. But for the sound and racing with torque being most important, the H-Pipe wins all day long!
Took my resonator off and put an x pipe with some RTR Magnaflow axlebacks. Great tone, not obnoxious loud. Still can sneak out of town but sounds great when accelerating hard.

I owned two Grand Marquis myself and the reason why the x-pipe sound bad on it is because the 4.6L engine makes more of its horsepower in the lower ranges. That means an h pipe is more suitable than an x-pipe. And you are right. An x-pipe do make them sound like shit unless they were designed to rev at a higher RPM like the dual overhead cam versions or the three valve versions of the 4.6.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 Do you think 4.6L engines with a heavier cam that are built to rev alot higher sound better with an x pipe? @@howdythere2419 it would because you will have to tune the vehicle in order for the cam to work properly which includes adjusting the timing so it can rev at higher RPMs. I had a cammed 4.6L in my first Mercury and it sounds a lot different then the cammed 5.4L in the Mercury I have now. I had both, h pipe first, x pipe second... Went back to h pipe for sound, even though x pipe is supposed to give better performance and equalize pressure. I went for sound.
H-Pipe all the way! Sounds much better than the X-Pipe. I went from factory, to X-Pipe, and then to an H-Pipe. The difference is a deeper tone both at idol and when accelerating. The fact that the H-Pipe does not scavenge, is what creates the deeper tone. The stagnant exhaust is in the way of the fresh pulse of exhaust from the manifold that creates a shock wave as the to masses of air collide in the exhaust stream. I'm sure that better scavenging is desirable, but the lack of it from my H-Pipe is worth it!
Both cars sound better with the crossover pipes installed. The GT with h-pipe has a more deeper classic muscle car tone. The Mach 1 with x-pipe has a more modern higher pitch tone.
