  • CaptainMeme tries out the Diplomacy variant known as 'Tic-Tac-Toe'. A lot of Diplomacy experts believe this variant has a set meta and very little room for interesting play, but perhaps an unusual alliance can change that...

    If this video doesn’t contain the phrase ‘Juggernauts and crosses’, I will be disappointed.

    Loving the in depth commentary! We don’t even get the first “O” on the board until about 1/3 of the way through the coverage at 8:10, demonstrating just how much depth there can be in the opening turns!

    Your commentary is flawless, I kind of forgot the absurdity of the topic halfway through. I applaud your ability to never break character.

    As the first player, I will always agree to demilitarize the center square on turn 1, since opening in the corner leads to a forced win if there is no response in the center.

      Considering how widely played it is, it's ridiculous how few videos there are on it! I'm going to go bug Floridaman to make a strategy guide.

    Would love to see this variant played in a tournament format. It'd be incredibly interesting to see how players' strategies evolve over time, especially against different people. In such a deep game, I wonder if the center power-play, the coy side, or the cunning corner emerges as the primary opening?

    So interesting, I love your content! I've been playing this niche variant called "Star Wars Battlefront II" recently, maybe you could do a video on that?

      Ooh, that's a classic variant (quite an old one at this point too!). Unfortunately I think the player base prefers playing it gunboat, I joined a game and tried to negotiate with a super battle droid and they just shot me

    My takeaway from this video is that the diplomacy in Diplomacy is completely fake and you should only play the board 🤣

    Epic battle! Another one of those players who constantly blame others for breaking alliances when they actually sneakily set up the backstab for you. Really high level tactics on display here

  • @NacnudPinky

    Pretty decent strategy if you’re playing first is to take opposite corners either side of the middle and then either the corner they didn’t get or the middle
    Player two will almost always be on the defensive and actually has very few options to win if player one starts by taking a corner rather than the middle
    Player two really only can win if player one makes a bad play or does not use player 2’s move
    The fact that in this version players moves cannot bounce makes this quite the challenge once you’re in a bad position

  • @DaRealKakarroto

    18:00 - in my opinion, you should've forgone your build in the right middle support center and instead moved from the top left center into the top middle support center, BUT also not forgetting to support that move from your middle middle support center.
    That way the top middle support center, where X was, would not have enough support holds, since the opponent already has taken their build action and didn't have enough to hold their support center. With nowhere to retreat, the X would've been destroyed for next phase.
    After that, you would've have the top middle, middle middle and bottom middle support center and form the unbreakable stalemate line, and win the game.

      @DiploStrats  9 місяців тому +3

      God, I can't believe I missed this. You're absolutely right, that would have been a forced win.
      That said, I think it's much easier to spot strategies like this in hindsight - this game is unbelievably tense and the pressure has a tendency to cloud strategic vision at points. Not letting that get to me is something I really need to work on.

    🤓You lost turn 1, playing Ob1 leads to a forced lost as Xb2, Oa1(Only move), Xc1, and now X has 2 opportunities to make 3 in a row on c2 and a3.
    Edit: The only way to keep the DMZ was to play Oa1, every other move loses to a forced sequence.

    • @someknave
      @someknave 7 місяців тому +1

      Oa1 also leads to a forced loss sequence. Xc1 forces Oc2, and then Xa3 has two threats to block in a2 and b2. I'm afraid as the O player, insisting on a demilitarised zone, plays into the hands of the X player. If you aren't willing to stab on turn 1 the X player can always force a win.
