Been a Crew Chief on C-130s since 1997. 10 years AD and the rest Guard. It's all how you look at things. I've grown up into adulthood as a Crew Chief. It gets into your blood. I'll retire soon with more stories and memories than all my neighbors... some stories I'll never tell!

I've seen a few comments here about not becoming a maintainer/crewchief, all i can say is follow what will make you happy and benefit you once you leave the service. I was a crew chief and I loved it. Yes there were days you worked long and hard hours and some days you got screwed but it comes with the job. As a crew chief on heavies (C-141B, MC-130-H and KC-135's) I've been all over the world as a flying crewchief, just you, your assistant crew chief and your airplane god knows where and that was the beauty of it. Just two people to fix anything that goes wrong with the aircraft. Now retired I work for a contractor that build aircraft for the military.

Hey man I'm currently contemplating enlisting in the USN or USAF with the hopes of working on aircraft. I'm not afraid of hard work or long hours. But I do want a family one day and I want to be able to care for them well. When you left the military, did your experience level qualify you to get good trade work out the gate, or did you need more certifications?

@@TripleA3000 I've reading and doing research about jobs in the airforce and it seems like the "experience" vary from person to person. To give an example i read alot of mix feeling about security force, since that's a job that transfers to the civilian world 🌎 as police officer the experience that people had is mix some like it other hates it.
So I will say it vary from the individual. I strongly suggest before picking a job or joining get to "know" yourself before going in and essentially get stuck with the job.

@elsarablo Congratulations and welcome to the team! Here are some things to help you before and during Basic Military Training (BMT) to prepare while being in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP).
      - Know your reporting statement (at the very minimum)
      - Teamwork is essential
      - Know your chain of command
      - Know the Airmen’s Creed
      - Know the Air Force Song
      - Know Air Force ranks (both enlisted & officers)
      - Know Air Force Core values
      - Recommend being at or close to the BMT PT graduation level before you go to BMT (always check with your doctor before exercising). Everything else will come with time. If you do not know any of the above please contact your recruiter for this information. Good luck future Airman!

For those watching this and aren't in yet: do not be a maintainer. They work terrible hours, get treated like trash, are mission essential so if you're on a base with snow you won't get any snow days, they don't get family days off, etc. I'm sure it sounds like I'm complaining about little things but I've known so many maintenance people who have cross trained just to get out of the field.
