    Storm Shadow is among my five favorite G.I. Joe characters and I actually like this 1988 version one more than original. I know that this 1988 version isn't for everyone but to me this one does so much right that I can't help but to like it.

    Great review, storm shadow v2 is my favorite figure besides shockwave, I love his story arc from cobra to Gi joe, it makes great character development and story telling, it's a shame sunbow didn't get a chance to tell this story transition, good thing Larry hama did this in the comics, I try to collect every comic that has storm shadow written by larry hama, if you are going to have ninjas in Gi joe than storm shadow was the correct way, not over done and makes you care about the character and see where his adventures and journeys take him

    This was a big favorite of mine as a kid, and it still holds a place in my heart.
    As for his turn from Cobra to GI Joe, I feel it works. I was a huge comic nerd as a kid, and read through most of his arc, so I think it fits.

    I see storm shadow as someone who walks the edge and torn between his duties and honor. he is someone who is and should be hard to classify and even when he was evil in the sunbow cartoon he was surprisingly polite if you can believe it. he is also what could be and what can be.

    Storm Shadow is one of my all-time fave GI Joe characters (the other being Snake Eyes). I had both version 1 and 2 when growing up. I really like that he was made a character complex enough that he has this duality to him and the mysteriousness that comes with being a ninja; all that certainly makes him interesting as a character and quite suitable for compelling storytelling.

    Storm Shadow has long been one of my very favorite GI Joe characters. I love his story arc in the comics, and I even liked his rivalry with Spirit in the Sunbow cartoon. As a fan of Storm Shadow's quest for redemption from the comics, I see him fully as a Joe, and like to point out that it's only been in modern times that Hasbro has pushed him as Snake-Eyes' arch-enemy, which they'd never really been before. I actually like this vintage version just a bit better then version 1. The original admittedly had some better accessories -- though it's hard to argue with that awesome compound bow -- but I just like the more detailed sculpt and camo pattern so much more. But that's just me. Version 1 is STILL very cool in it's own right.

    • @user-si9fx4xb6v
      @user-si9fx4xb6v 5 років тому +2

      I really like what Hasbro did for Storm Shadow version 2. The accessories are really great, although I would not mind the sword having a sliver blade. The gray camo and the red tattoo really make him standout among the 1988 line up of action figures. Issue #85 of the Marvel G.I. Joe comic book has a great cover with Storm Shadow in this outfit, that is really eye catching. As a collector of the modern series, I do agree that Hasbro really let the quality control slide the last few years. I really hope that they work to improve the figures in this area in the future.

    I fully embrace Storm Shadow as a reformed Cobra, however I VERY MUCH see him as a freelance operator in the GiJoe comic. I'm very firm on this. In the comic, we see Storm Shadow on two missions during the classic issues with Joes. One of them is in the Middle East during the Benzheen War, and the other is in the jungle with Ninja Force. The first mission is part of a team which is the proto-Ninja-Force. They are clearly being dropped into a war zone during an active war as unofficial, off-the-books agitators and assassins and I think that Storm Shadow is clearly part of this mission with the knowledge of Hawk. I do not believe that he is a GiJoe member during this mission, but rather that Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, and Jinx have chosen to bring him and Hawk has allowed it to happen. Hawk has been shown to not like ninjas, and especially not like Storm Shadow. It's important to note that Tommy is healing from a deadly stabbing wound during this mission, and it is slowing him down, so I suspect that Scarlett might actually want him along as much (if not more) than the others. During the second mission he is on, it is a very obvious personal mission for the ninjas of Ninja Force. There is some vendetta settling going on. Most of Ninja Force has strong ties to Storm Shadow's clan in one way or another, in fact their filecards are the best part about them. One final note on the classic series: he does appear in the PIT on the cover of 155. I do not consider this to be proof of anything considering his membership or non-membership, I believe this is an artist fluke on a symbolic cover.
    I do not accept Storm Shadow as a member of GiJoe in the classic comics because I do not believe he is portrayed as one. The guy sleeps in a water tower, for crying out loud. He's homeless.
    In the NEW IDW continuation of A Real American Hero by Larry Hama, I do believe that this situation has changed. In issue number 235 we see Stalker and Zap on a jungle mission with Storm Shadow. Tommy is wearing a GREAT uniform, it's like a mixture of his version 1 outfit and a green military outfit similar to a 1982 Joe figure. He's in predominant green with a white head wrap and white arm bands. It's important to note that Zap is on this mission, and also Stalker. I firmly believe that this is Storm Shadow's actual first mission as a member of GiJoe in the Real American Hero continuity. Later, in issue 249, Storm Shadow, Stalker, and Zartan (yes, you read that right) all go on an actual GiJoe mission with several other ninjas. Stalker is the team leader UNTIL they are in the field in Japan, at which time Hawk has sanctioned Storm Shadow to lead this emergency strike team. The mission is deemed to be so important, that Hawk actually commands to Space Shuttle Defiant, leaving from the PIT and landing on an airstrip in Japan, he has phoned up the government in Japan and demanded Japanese armed forces cooperation with transportation. A Japanese helicopter is waiting on the tarmac when Hawk, Stalker, and the ninjas come out of the Defiant and he gives Tommy and Stalker the mission. Hawk then stays with the shuttle and demands that "this highly classified piece of American equipment" be placed on the next possible overseas transportation back to America without any delay. It's incredibly badass and really cements that Storm Shadow is now trusted, valued, and even Hawk thinks so.

    I know I've mentioned in previous posts about the box of over 100 Joes and vehicles I picked up at a yard sale for my son but this version of Storm Shadow was given to me by a coworker when I worked as a night computer operator. In addition to performing my tasks there I gained a reputation for being able to pull practical jokes on my coworkers who worked during the day. If my boss needed me to set something up it became a job for the 'Night Ninja'. I was given this figure as a kind of gag but also a nod to my abilities to be the silent practical joker in the company. Storm Shadow remained on my desk for many years.

    I love this version of Storm Shadow, but yeah, that backpack is terrible.
    Storm Shadow was lethal but honorable, and that really limited his position inside Cobra; it was just a matter of time before he was killed off or switched sides... And they did both, in that order, in the comic book.

    Mixed feelings about this one. I found him towards the end of my time as a collector, but I had wanted the original version for so long, that when I found the update I just felt disappointed. I didn't want the new version, I wanted the old one. So even though I had him in my hands, I never bought him. Looking at him now, he looks like a good figure, and even though I still recall why I didn't want him I'm kind of surprised I didn't pick him up. I think I was already getting nostalgic for what had passed into history...
    I consider Storm Shadow to be Cobra, but I accept him being a 'floating' operative rather than Cobra-loyal. I'll never see him as GI Joe - just as someone that would help Snake Eyes / Scarlett, etc, if needs be.

    Normally I don't like it when they try to turn a bad guy into a cool anti-hero but what can I say....Larry Hama is just too good a writer and the depth he gave with his retcon of Storm Shadow's history is just top flight. I totally agree, some ninja is good, but too much is not so good.
    Some of my favorite individual issues in comics are still 21, 26 and 27. I read and heard about some of the later stories, but they did not interest me just like there was a period of time when GI Joe had these tacky colors.
    It is too bad they could not capture the magic in the cartoon, but GI Joe Resolute was pretty good with the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow fight.

    Continuity is key if you believe that the true cannon is the cartoon then he should be a cobra agent. But if you beleive in the comic as the true cannon then he is techniquely an agent of revenge who just so happens to be apart of Cobra to extract that revenge on Zartan.

  • @joejupiter4138
    @joejupiter4138 5 років тому

    I always think of Storm Shadow as a Cobra character. Not having followed G.I. Joe in my youth, I didn't even know he had defected until revisiting the franchise as an adult. I don't know what the creative team intended when the character was created, whether his transition was planned from the beginning or not, but since he began as a Cobra, that's who I like to group him with. It's also dramatically important, I think, to have a degree of duality between the two factions, which is fulfilled by Storm Shadow being a bad guy, serving as a counterpart to Snake Eyes. Furthermore, team-oriented fiction, in general, tends to run a bit shorter on interesting bad guy characters than good guy characters. Thus, when I imagine things, I like to keep as many bad guys bad guys as possible. Storm Shadow works extremely well as a bad guy, so that's what he is, to me.

    I've never seen the "Shadow Ninjas" version of Storm Shadow. Why didn't you show it in the video?
    My awareness jumps from "Ninja Force" to pretty much the live action movie.
    There was a random one off multipack that I got not long before the movie. I can't remember if it had a version of Storm Shadow or not, or what he looked like.
    I can't seem to find this "Shadow Ninjas" Storm Shadow. Could someone post a reply with a pic or a link to somewhere that shows that version?

    I’ve always thought the claw was copied from the guy Bruce Lee fights at the end of Enter the Dragon in the mirrors. He had them on.

    Great review!!! While SS V2 is my favorite, he is still a ninja which is an assassin. The samurai saw ninjas as mercenaries and therefore honor-less. With that in mind, SS could not be trusted because of merc hereditary. So, I still see him as Cobra....with a conscious.

      Indeed Storm Shadow is not without honor, he went back into a firefight against orders to save Snake Eyes life during the Vietnam War. If that is not loyalty to a friend, I don't know what is.

    The reason you may be inclined to think the modern era figures are "stretched" or disproportionate, is because the OG Joe's are so squat and incredibly disproportionate, with stumpy legs and torsos with big heads, and that's just what you're more used to. In fact, for the MOST part, the modern era figures are MUCH more proportionate than their original counterparts. This coming from someone who still has and enjoys my Classic Joes as much as the newer modern era Joes.
    Also, on a side note, the plural for "Ninja" is ALSO "Ninja", NOT "Ninjas", as the file cards would have you believe. (Like "deer" and "deer", as one quick example.) "...And knowing is half the battle...."

    Storm Shadow’s gray blocks was urban camo. I think it stated that on the card. Maybe not the file card, but I remember it being stated somewhere. Order of battle?

    I loved Storm Shadows character arc
    Although the Gi-Joe Resolute cartoon was good I didn't care for their retconing it
    also didn't care for the relationship with Duke and Scarlet as if there was a love triangle
    between them and Snake Eyes
    Scarlet goes for the strong silent kill you in your sleep type

    First, really like your show since I discovered it by accident a week ago! I am a huge fan of the toyline and supplemented it with the marvel comic series and sunbow show. But I do have one concern regarding this review, not the toy, but the story of Storm Shadow's involvement in Serpentor's creation. That is that Storm Shadow was revived from not from death, but from the Sleeping Phoenix technique that Snake Eyes used in an earlier issue when he was subjected to the brainwave scanner. That said, I too like this version reflecting his change in the comic.

    I got this as a kid, and must have ripped it open and never read the file card. I had no idea until I was older that Storm Shadow had switched to G.I. Joe. I never read the comics but did watch the cartoons up until they got really corny. Any time a figure had a new version (like Python Patrol Copperhead) we just made them a brother or cousin of the original character.

    Storm-shadow is ment to be thought as an independent and neutral character.
    He joins Cobra in Order to Carry out a personal-natured operation. That's all.
    And he can cooperate and rainforce GI-JOE, but he is not an oficcial member.

      I fonder for vintage ones as well. The problem is some new era figures fixes some problems about accessories ; 25 anniversary beachhead fixes all the details that made his original versión a disappointing figure, and as for snake eyes v3, his 25 Ani counterpart can use the knives

    i had a comic of the origin of snake eyes when i was a kid, he lost his voice and runied his face in vietnam due to an accident thats why he cant talk.

    • @user-si9fx4xb6v
      @user-si9fx4xb6v 4 роки тому

      Actually the face scarring and loss of his voice happened after Snake Eyes service in Vietnam. It was during one of the early missions the G.I. Joe team undertook in the Middle East. When their helicopter crash landed Scarlett's web gear got caught on the door. While Snake Eyes was getting Scarlett free from the wreckage, it exploded, sending glass shards from the widow into his face and setting him on fire. Despite the loss of his voice and the facial scarring he wrote the letters CM in the sand(meaning continue mission) and the team minus Scarlett who was in need of medical attention carried out the mission. Marvel Comics Issue #144 details this mission, and how it affected the team.
