  • The Castle was Occupied. We Were Forced to Put up With This.
Cromdale is a village in Strathspey, in the Highland council area of Scotland, and one of the ancient parishes which formed the combined parish of Cromdale, Inverallan and Advie in Morayshire.
The parish church and cemetery are located beside the River Spey at the end of Kirk Road beside the bridge which is the latest of three which replaced the nearby ferry. The bridge was financed by local residents, having been obtained as a War Surplus item from the War Office and erected in 1922 at a cost of £6,889. The remains of an older bridge can be seen a short distance upstream; this (much lighter) bridge was swept away in 1894, the 1922 bridge replaced one that collapsed in 1921.
The present small, growing village of Cromdale lies on either side of where the A95 road crosses Cromdale Burn, between Grantown-on-Spey and Aberlour; this bridge is about 500 metres south of the confluence of the burn with the River Spey.
The Battle of Cromdale took place at the Haughs of Cromdale on 30 April and 1 May 1690. The site is on a hillside near the village of Cromdale, Strathspey.
After their defeat at the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689, the Highland clans had returned to their homes in low spirits. Sir Ewen Cameron assumed control over the army's remnant. Sir Ewen and the other Jacobite chiefs complained to King James over the precarious state of his support in Scotland and the necessity of sending them aid. James was occupied with preparations for resisting a threatened invasion of Ireland. To aid his supporters in Scotland, James sent clothing, arms, ammunition and provisions. He also directed a few officers from Ireland to Lochaber, among whom was Major-General Thomas Buchan, whom James made commander-in-chief of the Jacobite forces in Scotland.
Buchan was met at Cromdale, near what is now the town of Grantown-on-Spey, by a larger government force under Sir Thomas Livingstone, commander of the garrison of Inverness, who was accompanied by local Grant guides. As Livingstone approached with his men, on the opposite bank of the Spey, the Jacobite forces started to retreat. Livingstone's cavalry crossed the river and intercepted the Jacobites who made a brief stand at the foot of the hill of Cromdale. However, a thick fog came down the side of the mountain and enveloped the outnumbered Jacobites, compelling Livingstone to discontinue the pursuit. According to reports, the Highlanders had 400 men killed and taken prisoner. Livingstone's losses were reported as between none and 100 killed. The defeat at Cromdale effectively ended the 1689 rebellion in Scotland.

Always good to have a backup spot. We generally always have at least one, if not two. When it comes free camping, you just never know if a spot will be available. I absolutely love the drone view of that church and cemetery. It’s so neat to see it from above. Love the bridge by too. The older the better on both bridges and churches, in my opinion. Great bit of history on the bridge. You could be right about camping stuff being cheap as the reason peeps don’t mind leaving it behind. Hadn’t really thought of it that way. Makes sense. You said it’s getting windy. I couldn’t help but think it always seems windy there lol. Nice pic of the army of ducks. Great vid.

We do normally have backup plans on our weekend but usually a known spot. This unknown worked out great. A double header of bridge and church, sounds like a result. Things got bad when they started selling festival tents, left to be cleared by bulldozer. So folk are conditioned to leave them to be cleared up. Lol yes always is, you get used to it after awhile but it is funny when we here of places having strong winds that we call normal. Take care.

Wow, loving that bridge Dave - surplus 1922 and still spanning the river. As for camping gear - yeah they have a lot to do with the attitude these big stores. I agree there. All the best. Mark

Thanks Mark. I blame them and the disposable nature of Festival Tents. We have seen the Eden Festival where they use a bulldozer to clear the fields. Stay well.

Well we would have been worried if you had wrapped your dashcam around the tree Dave 😃
Wonderful reserve spot - absolutely wonderful.
Wow what a fascinating history. The 89 rebellion has passed me by somehow!
Even there clear ups necessary 😨. Hopefully the cheap camping craze will reduce it not holding out much hope.
Love the Swift photos. And then Osprey! 😮. And the Coot chicks are always amazing to see

Me too lol. First time we have been there and we will be back. It was not 1989 lol. It is a great place, history and wild life and quiet after the days rush. Loving Serge's music now on my intro and outro and in between.
