- "The Whisky Tales" by Kevin Callahan 🎶
The Gaelic beverage is an acquired taste, the music it inspired here is just amazing though! "The Whisky Tales" is a composition is full of character and explores so much of what our instrument can do.
Thank you to Kevin for his stunning original composition!

Here is some information about the piece:
Shot 1: “Red Deer of Jura”
Jura is an island in the inner Hebrides of Scotland and translates from Old Norse to “Deer Island” as there is a large population of red deer, far outnumbering its mere 200 or so inhabitants. Jura is mountainous with the southern part of the island designated a national scenic area. Interestingly, George Orwell lived on the island of Jura intermittently and completed his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four there. In fact, there is a single malt produced on the island in his commemoration. This movement is in 6/8 and is basically a jig, so it’s important to maintain accents in groups of 3 and 6.
Shot 2: “Down by Knob’s Creek”
This shot is inspired by a well-known American Kentucky Bourbon. And in case you didn’t know, American whiskey is spelled with an “e”, whereas Scotch whisky is spelled without the “e”. It was somewhat difficult deciding on how to spell “The Whisky Tales”, with or without the “e”. But I chose without the “e” given the first and last movements reference Scotland. Down by Knob’s Creek has more Americana style elements such as blues and jazz while maintaining some folkloric elements as well. It has a fun or quirky feel with lots of syncopated surprise notes that spice up the flavor. While I did not intend to write a blues piece, it turns out that Down By Knob’s Creek closely resembles a simple blues, at least in structure, although with more harmonic complexity.
Shot 3: “Cauldron of the Speckled Seas”
By some measure the world’s 3rd largest whirlpool is the “Corryvreckan” just off the coast of Scotland between the islands of Jura and Scarba. “Corryvreckan” translates to “Cauldron of the Speckled Seas”. You might note that the Ardbeg distillery makes cask-strength whisky with the name using an image of the whirlpool on its label. There’s also some fascinating mythology you can read about online. Cauldron of the Speckled Seas is the final movement of “The Whisky Tales” and with this piece, I attempted to depict a swirling whirlpool that sucks you into its vortex, but sometimes spits you back out! You hear violent clashing of the waters punctuated by big, discordant chords. Cauldron of the Speckled Seas is not based in any key or tonality and is rife with meter changes, although there is a section where some of the themes and folkloric elements from The Red Deer of Jura show up in a slight variation. The movement is very rhythmic, energetic and bold. It’s the most technically challenging of the tales.

Classical Guitar by @AltamiraGuitars !
Stephanie Jones is one of the great exponents of modern classical guitar, and she never ceases to improve. Her spirit is filled with curiosity, constantly introducing us to composers who are becoming significant in the literature of this instrument. Kevin Callahan is an original voice within the classical guitar world, providing enriching contributions to the modern guitar repertoire. Congratulations to both for pushing the boundaries ever higher. A formidable partnership!
Thank you Sergio for your kind comment! It is truly a pleasure to play music from you and Kevin, always such a great mixture of inspiration, intrigue, and fun!
Great comment!
Of all guitar players I watch and listen to every now and then you are the only one whose videos I just can't leave before they're over. Even pausing because the phone is ringing is very hard. And it absolutely doesn't matter if you're playing Bach or modern pieces like this one which I otherwise mostly wouldn't even like.
Totally agree. Stephanie just has that magic that leaves you enthralled and mesmerized.
Yep. Stephanie is special.

Btw Stevie ,
Orwell was a penn name. Actually Eric Blair, as in Tony Blair family... From
" the Plan"..
It's a wonder to hear and watch. Is the third shot hard on the right hand nails?
Thank you for this collection, your performances and these notes, which will deepen my understanding every time I revisit each complex solo.
Cheers for such heady spirits!
Me gusta. Toca lindo y es bonita.
Stephanies playing is absolutely outstanding, and with an improvisational quality not often seen among classical guitarists. This is hot stuff!
You are a very talented guitarist and composer, listening to your magical music is a pleasure.
Thank you Stephanie Jones
👍👏🌹🌹🌹💕.
Amazing! On the one hand it was perfectly interpreted as usual on this channel. So virtuous and soulful at the same time. 👏👏👏On the other hand I'm always exited to find new music and since I've never heard about Kevin Callahan this was new to me. I need to lookup more from him as soon as possible. Thank you Stephanie!
Wonderful
Absolutely fantastic sounds like jazz fusion and classical.
I wondering how much is in provision. God had blessed you with a great talent.
Thank you for sharing it.
Stephanie plays the notes as written, there is no improvisation, but her brilliant performance gives us that feeling freedom.
Thanks Stephanie and Kevin for this wonderful surprise. The music is rowdy, elegant, and subtle at the same time. The composition and this performance deserve an honored place in the classical guitar repertoire far into the future.
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing musical giftedness!!! I am always blown away by your musicality! Bravo!!!
Outstanding! I was mesmerized from beginning to end!
Outstanding Jones! I love the artwork in the background, too.
Stephanie has such a great flow, a natural passage from note to note, a rare gift (a lot of work after, of course) for acoustic guitar players. Salutes from Brazil. You are in the team of Yamandu Costa, Baden Powell, Rosinha de Valença, Egberto Gismonti, Raphael Rabello...
Bravissima!
AWESOME. Love the composition, and of course the execution. You are brilliant and always make me smile. Thank you and thanks to Kevin Callahan for his brilliant music.
Stunning, Exquisite, Brilliant Stephanie is without question on of the greatest exponents of fingerstyle guitar of our time and all time.
AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!! 👍👍👍👏👏👏👌👌👌
I really enjoy the energy you bring to these performances!
I'm often reminded of videos of a young Segovia.
Thank you so much for sharing these new compositions and giving them a chance to be heard by a larger audience!
It’s always a pleasure to hear and see my favorite classical guitarist.💋
Magical. I’m always blown away listening to your playing! Very few players on the planet can make otherwise discordant passages sound genuinely musical but you always manage to pull it off effortlessly. Amazing!
SUPERB!
Living Legend.
One word: BEAUTIFUL!
Stephanie! Your playing is so clear, sharp, beautiful and powerful!!!!!! My only comment (and this goes for everybody who plays 'The Whisky Tales') Please, don't drink before playing it! Otherwise.. Just listen to Stephanie 😁 Kevin's composition is a masterpiece. It captures all the nuances of the eccentricities of the area where his inspiration came from. Details: I love the titles! CONGRATULATIONS to both of you 😍😍

Mercy... phenomenal...that last song...wow.
The first word I thought of after the last piece was Spectacular!🙏 Thank you
Beautifully played ❤❤❤
outstanding...super musical, super expressive.....
Wow! Love the composition and playing!
What a beautiful beginning piece. River flowing.
From now on I will not drink real whisky, will only listen to this 😀
Totally awesome!!!
'virtuoso' doesn't do you justice! Brava!
The sound you got from a living room concert is top notch. Amazing work Stephanie
Stephanie's videos always make me think that I really should be practicing...
Amazing! Thanks for sharing!!!
With a composition and playing like this, youtube needs to make a "two thumbs up button" I can smash!
Amazing playing!
When I first saw the cover, I thought it was bunny ears, but when I saw it, it turned out to be glasses.
Fantastic stuff!
Beautiful music !!!! ❤
Release an album with this on.
Amazing technique. This is my first time listening to this piece. But Stefanie brought it so well, in terms of phrasing etc, that makes me easier to follow the piece.
Many high notes interval, were executed in clarity and firmness. The relaxed left and right hands were so flowing, and not affected by the the rising tension of the song.
Superb. Bravo bravo.
Amazing talent. Again.
What a great piece and superbly performed. Certainly not too easy play from the score !. Excellent audio and vid hats off to sound engineer too.
Loved it first time round. Loving it all over again.
Olá Stephanie, é muito gostoso ouvi-la em sua musicalidade, você toca docemente com o coração e alma, brilhante minha linda jovem violonista!🤗🎁❤️🌹👏👏👏👏👏
Wow, simply superb!
Wonderful.
Top Ten for this decade by much. Ufff!

I love the brave CG pros who play modern compositions. These pieces are played with artistic interpretation.
Maravilloso !!!!
Gracias por compartir tu arte.!!
Hi Stephanie Jones! Someone put me onto this and I'm glad he did. Blown away but these rich and wonderful compositions let alone your own impeccable execution. I'm a guitarist composer myself doing lots of different styles but not quite as complex as this. Very inspiring. Thank you.
Theonious Monk of guitar. Amazing! So looking forward to be able to hear what you have in store for the future. ❤️😎👍
Brava .
Superb.
Interesting assortment of pieces. As always your playing is brilliant.
Bravíssima. Quina delicadesa!😍
Gracias Stephanie por la música❤

💥💥💥♥️💥💥💥
Well no whiskey at the moment, but enjoying a pint on the patio of my local brewhouse. Beautiful playing as always Stephanie. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
This woman is incredible!
wow This is so beautiful and incredibly difficult!! What a talent. This piece takes you on a journey, as your playing captures essence of the Scottish countryside. I need a glass of Whiskey now :)
Wow! You play that thing like a boss! Shot 3 was my favorite. I liked the chaos.
Great performance of what look like really fun to play pieces.
Even though it's Gaelic inspired it's nice to hear Australiana presented in Classical Guitar, considering how long Aussie's have been at the forefront of Classical guitar; even though John (Williams) likes to call himself British, he is still an Aussie. And you, Stephenie, are a worthy successor.
So beautiful and so intense. I'm surprised that the strings did not break. 🎸
Gorgeous!
Very well played and beautiful pieces!
wow
Amazing!
Yay!
brava
Really cool. I hope you come play in Berlin one day, I'd to love to see you perform live!
Thanks for your amazing playing and composing. Keep the dream alive. You tuber Ruth Aisling is a whisky fan and scotch as she tours Scotland. Great show. Do you ever do concerts in Oz? Thanks again.
Bravo!
Wow! 👏👏👏
