Psychedelia at its best!!!! If a band ever embodied a hit of LSD, it would be The Doors.
The Door was in its own lane. Their music was different; Jim Morrison's vocals were unique. And you can still listen to it today.
Man, I always loved the drumming of John Densmore. His style reminds me of military style and jazz mixed together.

@L33Reacts it’s crazy because Jim is in the “27 Club”. If you haven’t heard of that term, I would def look into it. It’s wild. Jim was always walking that fine line between brilliance & madness. I HIGHLY recommend checking out The Doors movie made in the 90s. Val Kilmer & Meg Ryan absolutely killed it recreating the life of Jim & his wife, Pam. The Doors sound is exclusively psychedelic experimental & Jim’s soul is quite literally made of pure poetic gusto. Cryptic was the name of his game, for sure! When he wasn’t drinking whiskey, dropping acid & engaging in s€xual exploration, he was writing & creating & howling at the moon ❤
It is a great song. I always imagine Jim as an ancient greek actor. He was a well-read guy I think he got some of his ideas from that knowledge of philosophy and fiction. Anyway there will never be another like him.
This is one of my all time favorite Doors songs. You ought to check out the Live at the Hollywood Bowl version, where he yells at the crowd, tells them to shut up. It's great!
When this came out, I was living in LA 13 years old and this song defined life at the time. Never stopped loving The Doors. Lee gets this, just so great to see music transcend time.

My 14-year-old mind was pretty much blown back in 68 when my best friend and I listened to this album. "I want to hear, the scream of the butterfly," that line always gets me.
IIRC the butterfly was a tattoo on the back of a pornstar (sscreaming).
That he took from the marquee of a porno theater of all places😊

It's not unusual to go on a mental journey during an extended Doors song. Perhaps unearthing early memories of a church bathroom. Jim Morrison once explored his earliest memorys in song, (seeing a roadside accident). Jim read a lot about human psychology and philosophy, and fearlessly explored the use of psychedelic drugs, meditation, ritual, emotional manipulation. His goal was to create music that transformed himself, and his audience. Jim liked "The Motivation of Crowds", taking audiences on strange musical trips.

Absolutely love The Doors! They made 6 phenomenal albums in just 4 short years with Jim, 67 to 71. You're right about the keyboard giving them their unique sound. I don't think any other band sounds like them.
Jim was a poetwriter in the first place. He knew that if he wants to be heard by the people he had to find a way to get a bigger audience and the rest is history...
The first two albums by the Doors contain the essence of the band as it was originally made to sound. The last three albums are the band producing music after their ignominious fall in Miami.
The Doors and Strange Days were released within the same year of 1967. Waiting for the SUN came the next year after touring, money, success, and the press that built you up began tearing you down. Jim Morrison was literally the face of the group, and when that face was made criminal, the beginning of the end was on the horizon. And it came relatively fast. That's why the music sounds different on the backend of their career as you hear after The Soft Parade. The music on Morrison Hotel and L.A.Woman are closer to the roots they wanted to be known for in the first place. But as life, alcohol, drugs, and the lifestyle of the turbulent 196o's demanded punishment for success, the situation only exacerbated the demise of a gifted singer and young American poet after one fateful night in Miami. Exhausting his spirit and leaving his body in a Paris bathtub at 27.

one thing I dont think the doors get enough credit for is just how powerfully original and dangerous they were when this song first starting hitting the scene. this is actually not a '67 song. it was already in the full form you are hearing now by '66!... the doors performed this live at the whisky in LA and the influential club in nyc, odines in yes, 1966.... sure dylan had broken thru the lyrics barrier esp by '65. & yes rubber soul and psychedlia sounds were already out... but no one in '66, incl the velvet undergrd or early floyd, was combining powerful lyrics, heavy psychedlic sound w/ improv jazz (densmores drums in this is top shelf) delivered with dramatic stage techniques of tension, danger & pause. along w/ the mood & cinematic broad scape. music as carthasis & experience, to take you on a passage way.... from '66-'68, the doors had a major impact in pushing the ledger of what rock could do. very unique unit, to never be repeated. ground breaking to later genres such as dark metal, sound scape electronic, punk & college radio.
Decades ago because I am old, my buddy and I in a 10 year period would meet up at two older downtown bars about three times per month. In Warren’s Inn, the Compact Disc, “Strange Days” was on the jukebox. I would try to time the song, “When The Music Is Over” for the last song of night at “Drink Up”, 2:15 am. Often I would nail it.
I was a Teen in the mid 60’s. Love The Doors, Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, 10years after. But don’t forget Creedence Clearwater Revivival! And AC/DC

It’s like beatniks used to read poetry in clubs in Greenwich Village N.Y. In the fifties. They would recite it onstage with some music accompanying them in the background.
Try The End from their first album next, like nothing else. I think of the Doors as a band who always listen to what each other are playing, almost the polar opposite of Cream.
Music that could just breathe and go wherever. Watching a live version you can see how they just played off Jim.
That's usually what happens when you turn out the lights with The Doors.

MORRISON HOTEL is probably my favorite Doors album.
You're perfect for reacting to the Doors. You are affected by the music, not just reacting superficially like some. Now, on to "The End"!
I saw the Doors perform this live in 1970 - they had a dangerous vibe to them. My mother was afraid they were "satanic" and I'd be influenced in some way. I return to this song over and over for the past 50 years. I think it is a classic.
By the time of the LA Woman album, Jim had put on a lot of weight and grown a beard. His voice was much heftier and tougher than it was on the early albums.
True. He was quite the alcoholic by that time, and in rough shape. His voice was not capable of the smoothness, control, and power he had earlier on. Still good, especially on heavy blues oriented songs, or when not pushed to the limit as on Riders On The Storm, where he sounds more like his younger self.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how at 3:59, the song could have just ended there and been a standard radio-play song. But no! That's where it really gets interesting. For those who may not know, the band laid down their tracks in a single day. Morrison was off doing something else. He came in the next day and put down the vocals in one single take over the band. Two days! For a song this long and complicated. That blows my mind. John Densmore is a very, very underrated drummer in my opinion. He served this song absolutely perfectly in all ways.
Soft Parade or Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine....Keep listening. Jim will jump into your soul and never leave.

Go to 7:21, then wait 3-4 seconds. Densmore hits the hi-hat and sustains it open and ringing for long than usual before closing. It's a longer sustained open hi-hat than you normally hear. And I swear, I wait in great anticipation the entire 7 minutes 21 seconds just to have the experience of that one hi-hat part.

Not many people can shock and then memorize a crowd of thousands in the same song.
if you want to try to understand morrison's lyrics, research into who he was influenced by. he wasnt your avg lyrics writer in rock. he was heavy into literature, psychology, history & theater. one of the most well read in rock ever, rivaling someone like dylan, in re to depth of knowledge and influence of poets....A lot of his taproot influence does go back to william blake who was a symbolist poet. jim is heavy into that technique & this is a good ex of that... thematically, its broadscape, but at the heart of the meaning is an exploration into the need & power of music as a conduit to spirit and/or vice versa. seeing music as a link to ones own potential of passion & power. & to share that passion & guideway w/ a lover. to seek this pure gift & freedom vs outer societal controls wh/ blind or block it.

JJ Cale, the hero’s of Eric Clapton and mine too. Cale wrote more then 200 songs, you can choose Artificial Paradise, Sensitive Kind, Deep Dark Dungeon. The second Artist Shawn Phillips, and with him, check his album Second Contribution. And the 3er one, Bruce Cockburn with his songs, If I have the rocket launcher, Loner, Silver Wheel, Maybe the Poet, Indian War.

In the day. Lounging in a couch with friends. Lights low....trippin' and smokin'. Everybody mellow...eyes closed soaking in the music with this and many other tunes. The culture of the times.....
I was fortunate to see the Doors perform this live at the Cheetah in Santa Monica, April 1967. I still remember standing in that ballroom being mesmerized by the band. I grew up in LA, and once we found the Doors, we were hooked and saw them at every venue we could. I think they were at their best in '66 and '67.
The whole album is a dark carnival; the music fits the cover.

That is one great f**king song man. It's probably my favourite Doors album and it's really, really dark. All the way through. The Doors brought their own unique sound to the party and they have a timeless quality to their sound. There's sp much great music from these guys. Dive in man, you'll love it.

I was 15 in 1967 when I first bought the first album the Doors put out and subsequently bought the next two albums and became a huge fan. This is my favorite song of the album but all the songs are good. Also, the third album is a banger; I look forward for you to react to them
After you've heard The End there is a much shorter, weirder Doors song - Horse Latitudes. It refers to the northern and southern latitudes where there are often no winds and sailing ships would become becalmed. Allegedly, Spanish ships would throw their horses overboard when they were in danger of running out of water. Now imagine The Doors making a soundtrack for that. Yes, it is indeed creepy!

This is one of my favorite Doors song. Record companies in that era were scoundrels, but if your band was able to sell records they would turn you loose in the studio and let you create at will. This song is an example of that. These guys had the chutzpah to go in and experiment and the talent to come up with something special.

You really ought to give a listen to the album "An American Prayer," which the remainder of The Doors put together after Jim's passing. They put to music a bunch of Jim's recorded poems... it is fantastic. You will not be disappointed.
