    2 major downsides explained on this video:
    1) You don't get paid for the extra 4-5 hours you work for
    AND
    2) These extra hours you work for are taken away from your layover time.
    So not only you're NOT getting paid.. but you're working for free during your REST time.
    A 24 hours layover should be a 24 hour layover! PERIOD.
    It should be considered from the moment you hit the bed in your hotel from the moment you leave your hotel!
    Not from the moment you touch down at the airport to the moment you take off again.

    I'm glad you covered this! A lot of people don't realize this is what happens. I'm a flight attendant and many times my 24 hour layover has been cut to 14 hours or so because of delayed, bus issues, etc. It's really tiring and can be annoying, but even still I wouldn't trade this job for anything ahaha.

    For anyone who has been traveling east /west and vice versa , you'd have to be pretty naïve to think a flight attendant would enjoy a layover . The human body needs time to recover from jetlag .

    Yeah I never understood why crews are payed this way... to me, this system dates back to the days in which cabin crews earned significantly more than other jobs requiring the same qualification, and the profession was very much respected. Back in those days, they could maybe give up a bit on their payed hours because they had other privileges. But nowadays crews should be payed from the moment they arrive at the departure airport till the moment they step out from the destination airport. I even wander how it can be legal especially in some areas of the world like Europe in which workers' unions and rights are much stronger than elsewhere.

      Etihad does that, meaning from the moment you check in you are paid, but the hourly pay is 20 AED less. So it boils down to the same flying hours for both airlines and the same pay.

  • @nikemedina6340
    @nikemedina6340 4 роки тому +10

    So correct me if I'm wrong but a layover is the time in between flights. So if there's 24 hrs between flights, it's a 24-hr layover. Just from the name, none of that implies 24-hr rest. If you were just a traveler, sure, but you have a job to do and as soon as you become cabin crew I think it would be common knowledge that 24-hr layovers don't automatically mean 24-hr rest

  • @smitajky

    This has been going on for a long time. From what I have read the crew on the Titanic had their pay stopped at the moment the ship sank. Even if they were rowing a lifeboat. Of course this only applied to the lucky ones who survived. Given that they were normally paid off at the end of a voyage I imagine that those who drowned were never paid for the days they did work.

    It is very important that you dealt with this topic, and I can't wait for you to cover other aspects of the company, whether they are positive or negative. Thank you very much! As far as you know, has the layover been always of real 18 hours, or was it different before? Were there true 24 hours layovers, from the hotel check-in to the check-out?

    • @WishCasting
      @WishCasting  5 років тому +3

      Ciao Emanuele! Thanks for your productive comment! Every layover mentioning 24 hours layover rest is in reality around 18-20 hours in reality. Every layover with 48 hours layover rest is around 42-44 hours in reality. So any layover you have on the Emirates network is the stated layover time minus 4-6 hours from it.
      In the past it wasn't like this:
      Emirates had fewer crew, fewer destinations, fewer aircrafts and fewer flights per week.
      Example:
      Rio de Janeiro had 1 flight per week. The whole crew would take an aircraft to Rio on monday and return it to Dubai by monday for another set of crew going back to Rio again.
      Many destinations had 7 days layovers. Nowadays, FORGET IT ! :D
      Emirates is in the competition and can't afford this, they have to roll the money and the flights.
      A good and bad change is that they're assigning hotels in the airport, allowing you to reduce amount of time wasted reaching the hotel. However if you're near the airport, that means you'll have a hard time getting to the city since it is quite far. As a consequence you'll waste that amount of time anyways. If you choose to stay at the hotel, your rest will indeed be longer. But you won't be staying at the hotel, trust me :)

    But that's where the basic salary comes into play.

    • @WishCasting
      @WishCasting  4 роки тому +8

      That's time taken out of your layover. Basic or not basic, it should be a 24 hour layover. It clearly never is. Here's an example: Manila is a 24 hour layover (with some exceptions where it is either shorter or longer). Take away 1 hour from touch down, take away 1 hour to get out of the airport and take away another hour of bus ride to the holiday inn express + check-in. That's 3 hours!
      Your layover should be untouched. 3 + 3 hours are taken away from it and these should be yours to use. Not for you to be in uniform representing the company.
      What I'd like to see is a full 24 hour dedicated layover for the crew, a real 24 hour layover.

    Well their are always down sides to any job Im a civilian contractor working in sw asia. It has it up and down side however people still want to get a job doing this so everything with a grain of salt. I always fly emirates long flights, for the most part Ive always seen the crews in pretty good spirits. You can tell if their are problems behind the scenes.

  • @WishCasting
    @WishCasting  5 років тому +5

    This comment by a user in our Facebook group has value, I'll copy paste. Please read:
    To be honest, writting on the video SCAM is a bit untrue. It says in the contract that you are paid from chocks on to chocks off. So once I got the contract it was on me to accept it or decline it. And you do get it before you physicaly come. So there is no scam. It is your own clear thinking and understanding of what is written and why do you want to work in this profession.
    Secondly, you are doing them( the company) a favor with these videos, not influencing change as you believe. People who imagined this job to be something else, and who would resign in less then a year or contract expiry, will think twice now or not try even to join, thanks to your video(s) and coaching.
    So that saves money and time to the company.
    And thirdly, that whole talk about flying hours, is true to an extent but as any media these days you made it a bit twisted ( they do not fit 100 hours in the same month you if you have leave. If you have 10 days of leave, 85h is the max I have seen.There are exeptions and mistakes, but you have swaps to dilute that and means to report a mistake or illegal roster). Seems like you really got on a wrong foot with them. You enjoyed a lot too from what I have seeen just in one video. Do not get me wrong- I am not defending nor supporting anyone, My attention was drawn to the way you spoke and the information you were providing.

    • @WishCasting
      @WishCasting  5 років тому +5

      And this was my reply to that comment.
      Hope this shines a bit more truth on the topic and the reason for the word scam (intended towards all airlines, not just Emirates).
      Damn! What a great comment! I see knowledge! ☺️
      Okay starting with the word scam, I've made it too harsh on the airline perhaps. But let me explain:
      the moment you're being paid till the moment you're stopped being paid, doesn't reflect the moment you stop working till the moment you start working. Meaning the contract doesn't specify you're still working during those 24 hours of your Layover. This is omitted and should receive a long contract section in order to prepare psychologically an individual. It is a scam for me stating 24 h Layover and then taking away 6 hours from my Layover for duties. The fact that they're unpaid is in the contract, okay, however it is not stated that, they're taken out of your rest.
      Emirates trains you on know-how ramadan and Arabic culture with e-learnings and don't train you on essential things that need to be known way ahead of time.
      For your second point: I love Emirates, but I love doing productive critics. If I help the airline in some way, I'm happy about it. I have a plan and they are within it. But my objective isn't much about influencing their future decisions, although it would be awesome if I did. It's mainly to prepare the individual before going. Knowing exactly pros, cons and limits to their freedom.
      Flying hours which is your third point:
      Not sure if you're crew, it feels like you are (Emirates?), but I can assure you that, happening every day of the month, people go on leave and have 90-100 hours regardless the leave. It's also on another video of mine, proven by an official Emirates crew I met on a Layover, proven by many people that Share their rosters on a Facebook page for Emirates crew. If is also happening more often now cause many have resigned and they are still covering same amount of flights.
      My problem is that, I have a lot of more information, bad one... And can't put it on the table cause I know Emirates won't take it well.
      So far I've been accurate in every possible way, didn't see my self stating false information. If you find a part in the contract where it states that you're Layover starts from chocks off chocks on, please show me and I'll rectify the video. However know that the general complaint for crew is the Layover being too short because of these reasons.
      100% of Aspiring crew don't know this and should be told during recruitment on the very first day, NOT in Dubai when signing the final contract.
      It's a bit like when you go to the restaurant:
      You're reading off the menu, you are very convinced of the meal you choose. You read the ingredients and get even more convinced.
      So you order, you wait for the plate to come and when it arrives, you get to eat from the floor.
      The part you eat off the floor is omitted but the ingredients and price and procedure for cooking it all isn't. It isn't fair right?
      All I'm saying, my service is to help, make people aware of realities that are omitted by the company and if possible, influence for a better change too.
      I love Emirates, I hate some things they did to me as crew but also as passenger, if you want I can tell you by pm, but I'm not a kid trying to get revenge. I'm only helping.
      Ps: I'm not a Saint, I can make mistakes too. If you reply to this comment and let me know you're opinion on this comment, it'll help me understand further if I'm really too harsh or doing it right. You're feedback is extremely helpful also because you have good knowledge.

    Good points, but every job has its issues. I am a high school teacher and people think I only work 8 hours a day while I am at school. Actually, there is roughly 1.5 hours prep, per day per course. In addition, we have to constantly do continuing education. AND we have to put up with extremely disrespectful students. Unlike a setting as with an airline, we just have to take the constant, horrific abuse. In addition, there is often hours of grading papers outside of the school at home.

      I'm sorry but you 're comparing apples with oranges. Flight crew loses 4,5 hours per each layover, deals with impossible passengers and their ridiculous demand and are harshly reprimanded for slightest things. You/ teacher, can at least go home to your own bed and there ate unions for you. Emirates, Qatar, Etihad don't allow unions. Flight attendants in these airlines get sick twice in 2 years and they get fired. Do you get fired when you get sick? Yes, children and parents can be quite challenging but it's nowhere close what Middle Eastern airlines working environment is. European and Csnadian airlines ate much, much better in respecting their flying crew rights and needs.

    assuming you work 6 hours per flight and you do 10 flights a month- more than suggested in this video, that's 60 hours a month. Basic pay is 4,430 for starting crew members so thats 4,430/60 = 73.83 AED an hour or £16.45 or $20.10 per hour for starting crew. That's pretty good pay, not including perks as free accommodation etc. I do think that only having 18 hours free between flights takes away part of the fun of working for an airline, but that's what coffee is for!

    THEN WHAT DOES YOUR OTHER PAY COVER???

    • @WishCasting
      @WishCasting  4 роки тому

      Do you know how little that other pay is? This overtime should be renumerated in flying hours. If you have 10 flights per month, that's 70-80 hours of your time. Basic salary is 1200 USD or so. That covers your days off but should not cover the time you're actually on duty. Other gulf airlines have it also different, Emirates could adapt and pay extra for those hours you're still working or transiting. Or at least pay half since basic salary is essentially, really really low.

    I think it isn’t working for free. Your base salary pays you for everything you do for the airline including transportation, training, waiting for delays and etc. actual flying in which demands way more from you will be paid as “extra” so only chokes on and chokes off as paid as flying hours and not working hours. If you see from this side the total compensation isn’t that great ... regarding your fatigue hence how many crew members have quit recently... it’s so demanding on your body that at the end out of those 18h probably 10
    You will spend sleeping and the 8h left you will be rushing through trying to get to know as much as possible of your destination.... truth is: You are not on vacation, you are working for an ununionized company.

    Not news. I've heard the same stuff many times. I don't work for an airline, but I do agree you should be paid from the time you check-in for work, prepare the aircraft, until you check-out. If the airlines did that, they'll probably lower your hourly pay, so you wouldn't earn much more. Sad but true. I don't agree the airlines should pay you all the way until you get to your hotel room (or home), and from leaving the hotel (or home). I'm not paid from the moment I leave my house and until I get back to my house. I wish I did. I don't know what employers do (I won't get into teleworking).

    As Cabin Crew for another Large airline, it’s refreshing having someone “debunk” many of the myths of the job. Now that being said, I am with a carrier that pays extremely well. But along with that comes sacrifices many are unaware of. The checking in early and layover times that are misleading, the reduction of layover time if you’re very late......to name a few. You do develop some extremely close bonds and friendships along with knowing what “crazies” to avoid. Also those Pursers and Supervisors who sometimes act like they are Upper Management and rules do not apply to them. BUT, I must say as a work group we do tend to be friendly, outgoing, personable ....and at least for a few years, enjoy working with people:-) Keep up the good work
