Just returned from a short vacation I have only now got the chance to listen to and watch this presentation. Excellent analysis (I'd say: as usual) and felicitous facts about the band and their work. And, last but not least thank you so much for mentioning my "input" for this video - and, of course, many thanks for all the heart-warming comments.
A very touching video recording of Sigur Rós' song Ára Bátur from the album "með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust" you can find here: ua-cam.com/video/vUK_ou_mTQE/v-deo.html. Like in Sæglópur the piano takes a leading part here and the dramatic structure is pretty similar

Seen them 3 times live, and each time, almost overwhelming, in a great way. Like nobody else. Together with Radiohead, the two best and most interesting bands on this planet of ours.

When I was 14 I’ve showed this to my friends. Everyone liked it. And we were very rural. Sigur Ros and Björk were my childhood in Germany.

I haven't listened to Sigur Ros before but this makes me want to explore more. It's always interesting listening to music where I don't understand any lyrics as the voice then becomes just another instrument in the make up of the sound. ( Lisa Gerrard does this). So it then becomes whatever the music evokes for you. For me this evoked a journey through an icy landscape while trapped in thoughts of anticipation of what was at the end of the journey. Thanks Andre.

    • @JustJP

Very true; without understanding the words, the emotions you feel are pure, solely based on the music

There is a quote by Lisa Gerrard , vocalist for Dead Can Dance where she said
" Music / the arts have the ability to take you to places ....
More beautiful ... than were ever promised ... "

Beautiful song! Thanks Andre! Very evocative of liberation, freedom, floating ,release! Reminded me of one those videos of flying over a landscape then flying over the edge of a valley, breathtaking! Or, drowning and being rescued.

The whole album is like this. A very cinematic feeling to the whole thing. The video for Glossoli is seriously draw-dropping. And Hoppiipola is an anthemic classic up there with Elbow’s One Day Like This.

I have to second Glosoli! When I was a kid, I went through some really traumatic times. For 3 years, I only listened to Sigur Ros, no other music. Flashbacks, panic attacks, all sorts of ptsd stuff. This music helps bering me back to center every time. It's been 15 years now, and I listen to other music now. But Glosoli is still my all time fave💜

I’m loving this reaction. No interruption (except for the wife, love her) just pure feeling throughout. As can be deciphered from my name, I’m a fan of this band. I’ve seen them live, once in Los Angeles and once during Jónsi’s Go tour in Reykjavík. Absolutely fantastic experiences. It was such a joy to see someone truly listen for the first time! 👍🏻

thank you Justin ; thank you André for that " emotionnal " discover …….ah ! Icelandic music ! such as the landscapes ! ! ! such as Earth as its " Début " .
some good " two notes songs " can become very catchy songs , going into the inner soul => as : Magma : " Zess - le jour du néant " ( latest version 2019 with philarmonic of Prague )
I also like high range voice : Amanda Parsons in " Tenemos Roads " from Dave Stewart's band : National Health
other Scandinavic group ; special music : Änglagård ( sweden )

One of my favourite songs by them. There are lots, though. I don’t know how much you explore after listening to a song you enjoy, but usually I want to delve in deeper after hearing something I enjoy.
Only somewhat recently have I watched some of their live stuff. And a specific video really blew me away. The song Popplagio live at best kept secret. Makes me realize how much I’ve screwed up not seeing them live yet. While having a few chances and not going. Seems like one of those few bands where seeing them live will eclipse any sort of home listening.
And if for whatever reason you’re a fan of it’s always sunny in Philadelphia, amazingly there was a really cool scene in the show where they play their song varuo to a powerful scene. Another of their songs I’d consider one of their best.
    Also, hi, Andre.

the song's name Saeglopur literally means "Lost at Sea."
in the first third, i imagine a boy on a liferaft it the middle of the ocean, ala Life of Pi. he's been on this raft for a few days now, he fishes his dinner and filters seawater through a sock. he sits contemplating how on earth he got here, how on earth he's going to make it home.
in the second third, we cut to a storm raging directly over his head. angry waves crash down upon him like crumbling walls, the wind has him clinging onto his raft for dear life, the rain endlessly batters his face as if it were raining metal shrapnel, everything is screaming around him. it is a desperate tug of war between the raft and the elements attempting to drag him into the abyss. mortality is nipping at the boy's heels, and he's running as fast as he possibly can.
in the final third, we hard-cut to the aftermath of the storm. the raft is coming apart at the seams, the boy is laying face up upon the raft, watching the sky clear, exhausted. he is amazed at his survival of the onslaught. he feels as if he shouldn't be here, as if he's long dead and this is just one last fading dream. another part of him disagrees. another part of him is damn sure now: if he can survive the likes of that, he can absolutely make it home.
the song ends with the fading out of what sounds like a distant radio signal. the boy has a long way to go.

Love this, but i am shocked that you could've imagined something nice. In my opinion saeglopur has a very sinister energy even before the buildup. I remember the first time i heard that i was crying in the first part and jarred in the middle. This is a great song for a review but i honestly wish you have done a review on Glosoli

Jonsi is a amazing angelic and I picture a attractive mysterious girl singing this song I never see her eyes because of her bangs but she sings like a fairy jonsi voice and she plays the guitar like a violin. Theres a live verison that has jonsi guitar bow more and it add a dark good sound to the album.

    Hello Andre
Absolute truth: I was watching the video and listening to the music and I started thinking "when's the picture gonna change?" and after a few seconds again i thought "why's the picture not changing?" I was lulled into thinking I was listening to a film score. And then you came out with your "cinematic this" and "cinematic that". I was gonna say that stuff! Anyway,... I thought the vocalist was female. Overall it sounded nice, but i don't think I'd listen to it again without pictures.

Never got into either Sigur Ros or this style. However, if it comes to this, I prefer Fleet Foxes or Mew. Similarly cerebral is Braids (sometimes). Although they are closer to Animal Collective, I guess. I was into them for a while, but their latest album sounded pretty much like the one before. They are probably most known for the song Miniskirt, but their debut "Native Speaker" is more similar to Sigur Ros. It also uses artificial language.

My favorite Sigur Rôs track off of my favorite Sigur Rôs album. Of course I visualize so much during this music. Jonzi's singing isn't my favorite part of their music, but it does fit in with the compositions. Have you heard his solo work? BTW, you should see Heima?: ua-cam.com/video/afxiUrfhF8A/v-deo.html. It follows them around Iceland performing in unique locations, but bringing in the essence (I assume) of the country. Its funny that you mention at 11:30 how when the drums come in they decided to run through the forest. Their next album they released a video to "Gobbledigook" which has a lot of drums. The video is a group of young people running around the woods naked. vimeo.com/3987450

Yeah, I thought the song was very relaxing, however I didn't find the song inspiring. If I drew a straight line, I feel the song reflected that straight line with minimal movement from the music and vocals. Hello, Andre.
