  • I sure do love a good Shore Pine! Pinus Contorta v Contorta is a common tree all throughout Cascadia that is incredibly resilient, often growing in poor soils at low to middle elevations. It's easy to identify because of it's short twisted needles that sprout in pairs, and iconic cones which are activated by heat and fire to free the seeds inside. They have two other variants which all interbreed and hybridize in Cascadia, the Tamarack Pine and Lodgepole Pine - all great pines!

The fire melting the resin sealing the pinecone is SO COOL. Advanced natural engineering right there!!

Right?! So amazing to see different species adapt to disturbances like that

do they require cold stratification to germinate?

Thanks I finally match some pine trees around my house in Oregon coast. I saw people cooking tea with 5 needle White Pine, can Shore Pine needle used for tea too?

Ahh there are some gorgeous shore pines along the Oregon coast! I believe you can make tea from their needles as well, although they may be a bit more 'citrus'ey or tart. Have a go at it and let me know how it turns out!

they must be very salt tolerant too.

Oh yeah, they withstand all sorts of poor soils and even salt spray. Resilient little buggas!
