  • Hey guys, this video is showing our DIY custom built powder coat oven. Just like us, I'm sure you have gotten a quote from a powder coating business and your jaw dropped for how expensive it was. Well... build this and you will save a lot of money! We go over the materials needed and how we built the oven. If you have any more questions about the build we will help you out with your build. Let us know in the comments on what you would change on the design. Hope you enjoy the video, and make sure to subscribe to the channel for more amazing content. Thanks!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, this is a list that we came up with for the control box. Let me know if there is anything else you need, like other parts or just questions about the build and we will be happy to help you on your build!
Now these are all name-branded parts that our buddy, who is an electrical engineer recommended to us when we built our oven years ago. But, I'm sure you can find other brands that are cheaper. Just because we built this forever ago, some of these parts you can buy are either certified refurbished or you have to contact the company to order them. I did go on eBay and found some used ones.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parts for the Powder Coat oven control box:
    Yaskawa HI-35E magnetic contactor
    Allen Bradley 1487-B-BASX-0-N transformer
    Fenwal 923 Temperature Controller
Bussmann 2 Pole Power Distribution Block
    Type K Thermocouple
Also it is a 240v single phase.
If you have anymore questions about the build you can email us at alwayssomethinggarage@gmail.com.

It looks like you could use those same hinges all the way around to connect all the wall pieces so you wouldnt have to unscrew anything. Other than that i love the idea

Maybe an idea would to make dividing walls between the 3 burning that can be slid in and out..That way when you only have a small part, you are only using a third of the space to heat up..Just need to come up with a way to shut off 2 of the burners when you only need one..

Best DIY cure oven video I've seen yet. I need something bigger than what I already have for powder coating and would like it to double for prepreg carbon fiber curing. With just a few tweaks I can accomplish exactly what I need for a fraction of the price of all the turn-key ovens I've found that just aren't big enough. Thank you! Your design is large enough for me to cure 4 or 5 carbon fiber guitars at a time and cost-effective enough to be worth the build time.

You need to add some radiant shields over your elements, just some sheet metal with 3/4 -1' holes, hanging in front of the elements. You may not have had any problems yet but it will if you get some parts to close to the elements. It will actually burn the coating or discolor it . Don't ask me how I know. LOL
I have two ovens in my shop 7' X 7' X 7' inside measurements and a 4'6" T x 3' W x 32" D inside. I heat mine with LP, I built my own burners and controls myself. The big oven, I can bring from 32* up to 400* in about 9-10 minutes and the little oven about 15 minutes (different type of burner. I don't need to dump 500,000 btu of heat in it.)

Total wattage, volume, and time to temperature? External skin temperature @ 400deg F internal?
BTW, you can use regular (3M blue) masking tape. It does not burn but it does become difficult to remove when the glue gets heated.
Powder much cheaper on eBay. I've purchased 50# boxes for around $2-3 per pound though not necessarily a huge color selection. Several have said powder expires but not in my experience. Main thing is to keep it dry.

Just add a small metal fan. Then its convection oven, you can pull hot air from one side and pipe it to the other side for more even heat. Dosnt have to be a strong wind just moving the air.

Very nice build and well thought out and executed!.......as far as the burner elements, it looks like just 3 household oven elements? Can you just purchase like 3 of the same model replacement elements for a household oven and also what wattage specification elements do you recommend for a box similar in size to what you all have built?? I'm looking to mainly powder automotive parts with probably wheels and subframes/chassis parts being the largest items I will need to put in an oven so that being said a household oven was what I was originally starting to look into putting in my garage and just adding an extra 240V box on its own breaker in my panel and wiring the identical pronged plug that my plasma and welder takes that way I don't have to run it on the compressor outlet and the oven will only need plugged in when in use and all other times will be free for my plasma and welder for fabrication and all of that equipment is in the area I'm going to free up under one of my larger fab benches and build the oven to fit snug under that bench that way if I'm doing something heavy such as an engine block or similar weight I can powder it on a wheeled cart and then roll it right into the oven on the cart and when done wheel it right out instead of lifting heavy items up a few feet into the oven. I want to thank you guys for such a great informative video on your build and also thank you in advance for the information on my questions in the beginning of my comment here! I look forward to chatting with you all soon and until then take care and powder on!!

    • @CGT80
      @CGT80 Рік тому

I bought a replacement element on amazon and bent it around a cylinder to make my automated bullet casting machine. Compare the size of a household oven to the volume of your oven. It would be easy to add another element later or to unhook one if you are wrong. A few years back it was $17 for the element I bought. You should do a 50 amp circuit and #6 copper wire depending on the length of run for the 6-50 receptacle. Since an oven runs for long periods of time, you want to have good size wire. Plasma cutters and welders can run on smaller wire for shorter periods, but I finally upgraded when I remodeled my garage.

beautiful job, gets the job done. Galvanized..?..I personally think its ok, the interior doesn't vent out and the exterior is insulated from reaching above 480. Having said that I woould have used regular sheet metal and used a high heat paint to insulate and protect, but respects for getting it done. the little guy usually doesnt go any where because Abraham Lincoln says we cant:) Wondering if 240v might have been better to drop the emparage..

Very interesting. I just finished installing an older stove in my garage and even though it’s ‘small’ comparatively, I’m pretty stoked to get to it! I’ll keep your video in mind as I move forward.
One question….. you said it runs on 220/240…. So it’s plugged into a 50amp welding plug? (Like a 6-50R?). Is that all you need in terms of circuit to run the oven.

      Love the innovation
I had a small shop in 89 built and installed security doors
Wet sprayed first then fast dry acrylic
      Then high solids bake
      Finally got into powder
Lots of work but well worth it
Had two lines one automated recycled the powder great savings paid for the equipment over time
one binks 10 x10 sprayed to waste Adding a Fremont phosphate wash was great for pretreatment
sadly lost it all during the 2008 2011
      Economic meltdown
Think I’m going to build my own this time
      Thanks for your post
