  • Volvo EX30 Review: Scandi Chic Meets Electric Practicality
The Volvo EX30 is the Swedish brand's latest electric offering, and it's a stylish and comfortable small SUV that brings Scandinavian design flair to the masses. While it may not be the most practical choice, the EX30 excels in other areas that make it a compelling option in the crowded electric vehicle market.
The EX30's exterior styling is a blend of modern and retro cues, with clean lines and a minimalist approach that's quintessentially Volvo. The interior is where the design really shines, with a sleek and uncluttered layout that exudes a premium feel. However, there are some hard plastics scattered throughout the cabin, reminding you that this is still an entry-level offering.
Practicality is not the EX30's strong suit, with a relatively small cargo area and tight rear seating that may prove challenging for taller passengers or those with child seats. However, Volvo has implemented some clever storage solutions, such as a central glovebox and a foldable tray between the front seats, to help maximize the available space.
Where the EX30 truly excels is in its driving experience. Volvo has managed to imbue this compact SUV with a level of comfort and refinement that belies its size and price point. The ride is remarkably smooth, with excellent noise insulation that makes for a serene cabin environment, even at highway speeds.
Depending on the powertrain configuration, the EX30 can be either a sprightly performer or an outright speed demon. The entry-level single-motor variant delivers ample acceleration for daily driving, while the range-topping twin-motor Performance model is a veritable rocket ship, capable of hitting 60 mph in a blistering 3.6 seconds.
Despite its sporty potential, the EX30 is primarily focused on delivering a relaxed and comfortable driving experience. The steering is light and precise, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces, while the well-damped suspension soaks up bumps and imperfections with aplomb.
One area where the EX30 does fall short is in its infotainment system. While the large touchscreen display is visually impressive, the lack of physical controls can make simple adjustments a frustrating affair. Relying solely on the touchscreen for everything from climate control to opening the glovebox can be distracting and potentially dangerous while driving.
When it comes to range and charging, the EX30 offers a variety of options to suit different needs and budgets. The entry-level model boasts a respectable 214-mile range, while the extended-range variant can travel up to 298 miles on a single charge. Charging times are competitive, with the ability to replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in as little as 28 minutes when using a high-speed DC charger.
Overall, the Volvo EX30 is a compelling choice for those seeking a stylish and comfortable electric SUV with a dash of Swedish flair. While it may not be the most practical option, the EX30 delivers a refined and enjoyable driving experience that sets it apart from many of its competitors. With its competitive pricing and impressive range, the EX30 is a worthy contender in the increasingly crowded electric vehicle market.
