  • The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is one of the most stylish and fun-to-drive SUVs on the market today. With its sleek Italian design and powerful engine options, it makes a compelling alternative to the typical German premium SUV offerings. However, it also has some flaws that keep it from being a class-leader.
    Stylish Inside And Out
The Stelvio's shapely exterior styling is a breath of fresh air in the often staid SUV segment. With its crisp lines, triangular grille, and muscular haunches, the Stelvio looks like nothing else on the road. The interior design is equally appealing, with premium materials, excellent front seats, and tasteful metallic accents that give it a sporty yet upscale feel.
While the quality is good overall, some cheaper plastic trim pieces disappoint compared to an Audi Q5 or BMW X3. The infotainment system is also quite dated with sluggish responses and graphics that look behind the times. At least Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard.
    Engaging Driving Dynamics
Where the Stelvio really shines is out on the open road. With communicative steering, minimal body roll, and punchy acceleration from the available 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder (280 hp) or 2.2-liter turbodiesel (210 hp) engines, the Stelvio is downright fun to drive for an SUV. The well-tuned chassis inspires confidence when carving canyon roads.
However, that sporty suspension tuning comes at the expense of ride comfort, as the Stelvio can feel overly firm over rough pavement, especially with the larger wheel options. The powerful 505-hp Quadrifoglio model exacerbates this issue even further in the pursuit of mind-bending performance.
    Reasonable Practicality
While not at the top of its class, the Stelvio offers reasonable practicality for a premium midsize SUV. The rear seats have adequate room for two adults, though toe space is tighter than in some rivals. The 525-liter cargo area is usefully shaped but falls behind the larger Audi Q5 and Jaguar F-Pace.
Up-to-date active safety tech like automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist are standard, though some rivals include more advanced systems at this price point. Reliability has improved for Alfa Romeo in recent years, but still lags the best in the segment.
The Stelvio's combination of nice styling, engaging dynamics, and just enough practicality make it an intriguing alternative to the typical premium SUV choices from Germany and Japan. While it doesn't beat the class leaders in any one area, the well-rounded Alfa makes a compelling emotional appeal as a premium SUV that's more than just an appliance for complacent drivers. For those who appreciate the finer things in life, the Italian Stelvio is worth a look.
