I Once met him at a music store in Berkeley where he actually asked me to play that 8 string beast because he was trying out for a new road rig and wanted to hear it from a distance (he said he asked me 'cause he liked my chord voicings...imagine me feeling flattered - real nice guy, too!)
CH is one of the most creative voices out there in jazz! to understand his tone you must get into Hammond-Sound (Smith, DeFrancesco etc.) as well as take a lookt at some Scofield-Stuff...but CH made it all his own. his style is different. very cool stuff!!!!
On almost the first half of the play, the background 'electronic organ' tunes give a smooth groove onto the entire session, even the band is a quartet of consisting of one drums, one guitar, and two horns, and then the 'organ' disappeared on its second half. Did the 'organist' get fired in the right middle of the session? It's just astonishing.
I've had this CD for along time and love this tune, but does anyone know what the vocal phrase is that is interspersed several times? Can't quite catch the words no mater how many times I've heard it.
This shit is solid. Charlie's the coolest cat I know nowadays, cause of his absolutely amazing groove. I personally like most of his late 90's stuff, specially The return of the Candyman Album. Anyone knows any live videos of that album or era ? p.s. And if you get a chance to see Charlie's gig, I HIGHLY recommend. Thanks for posting. Btw Conan looks like he's from the 70's :)
Charlie is playing an 8 string guitar. 3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings. The guitar part is running through a Leslie cab. He plays bass and guitar parts simultaneously.

Jerome Engelberts that's awesome.
Conan's probably the only late night host that would truly appreciate Charlie for what he does.
I listened to D'angelo Voodoo the other day. I forgot how much Charlie Hunter added to that album. Dude is drippin soul sauce
People usually don’t know Charlie is even on that record.
@@sterlingmillhollon2520 I didn't!!
Wait... what!?🤯
Can’t believe I am just now seeing this performance. The drummer’s swing shuffle is so dead on.
Charlie standing up is a rare sighting
Amazing how he gets that tone like a Hammond organ.
He uses to run through Rotosphere stomp pedal from Hughes & Kettner
...and played an 8 string guitar like an organ player
As always, Charlie Hunter sounds amazing!
This is one hella tune and the album cut is even better ..... perfect .... the horns are fantastic !!!!!
Oh Sweet Lord thank you for bringing me here!
Bob Marley would be amazed to hear his song being played in this context. Amazing stuff.
Been listening to these guys since this album came out. Natty dread Absolutely one of my all time favorite albums!

Incredible performance! Minor quibble ... the original has a chill laid-back tempo... this is more 4/4 up to the beat, still incredible :)
