That is the glorious voice of Tatiana. She never disappointed in all of the performances which I had the great pleasure of attending and hearing her at the MET. She is a treasure, always to be remembered.

Oh, how glorious Duchess Tati shines! I can't stand that she died so young. I love what the music critic said about her in the first paragraph of her Wikipedia page "Tatiana Troyanos (September 12, 1938 - August 21, 1993) was an American mezzo-soprano of Greek and German descent, remembered as "one of the defining singers of her generation" (Boston Globe).[1] Her voice, "a paradoxical voice - larger than life yet intensely human, brilliant yet warm, lyric yet dramatic" - "was the kind you recognize after one bar, and never forget", wrote Cori Ellison in Opera News."

She did it seven times at the MET in 1976, one of which was broadcast so there must be tapes somewhere. For that broadcast her Radamès was James McCracken, the Aida was Gilda Cruz-Romo, and Louis Quilico sang Amonasro.

I forgot how good Domingo was in his prime. It’s true that he has a long career and is still singing credibly albeit in some high baritone role, but the sweetness and ping in his voice left him by the time he reached 60. The concentrated elegance and honeyed sweetness in mezza vice was his trademark since he debuted in his 20’s.

the sweetness and ping in his voice left him by the time he reached 60? No he was not good long before that since mid 1980s. Before then there is some sweetness, splendor, nobility heroism and true spinto color in his voice. The timbre is warm, but still sounds like a young noble man. Really a very good voice. He's a good actor and also, quite a cute and good-looking guy back in the days lol (actually still is lol). He debuted as Othello in 1976 and then his voice was quicly gone. It's his artistry, musicality and acting skills that saved him after it. I guess the lesson we should learn from his experience is that never sing roles that are too big for your voice.
His baritone singing is nothing but awful. But then, it's already impressive that he can still sing in his 80s. So if he still enjoys singing, and if the audience still want to see him, which they obviously do, just let the man sing.

@@jaykeyz9094 It all depends on how you define "good". And true I agree he's been good for a long time and he still is, in his 80s, depending on how you define "good". I really cannot deny that the timbre of his voice is still lovely and it does not sound like someone in his 80s at all. And truth be told, I think he's better than most young singers anyway. I saw a musical in which a young performer sang The Impossible Dream, and he was far from Domingo's level, who had also sung this song, and is about to turn 83. (Yes I am serious)
But by “good", we were primarily referring to the "roundness and richness" in the operatic singing instead of the youthfulness. He did have that youthfulness in his earlier years, which helped him to portray those young characters so well, such as Cavaradossi, Don Carlos and Alvaro. But in the mid and late 80s the richness was gone and he began to struggle more with the high notes.
Of course I am just describing what has happened, not saying he's not great or good enough. Even in the later stage of his career, he still sings better than many (maybe most) of his tenor collegues. The reason why he remains to be one of my favourite singers is that he is a good tenor with excellent stage presence and acting skills. Even in his off-days, he was able to use his good artistry and acting to impress the audience. I really couldn't say anything good about his baritone singing lol, but still he has that artistry and musicianship, which is the reason why I am looking forward to seeing him live later this year.

OMG how wonderful it is to relive her. This is such a superb performance! How many cigs did I share with her in San Fran and Dallas? She was so misunderstood. She is one of my fav artists of all time. I treasure every memory! She spoke truth without apology. She was strenght! One of my fav moments was playing a piano rehearsal for her and Maestro Nicolo Rescigno for a concert performance of the Komponist aria. Rescigno was so intimidated by her (so rare). Her Eboli in Dallas was so awesome. I love her so much!

Oh how we forget these performances. Thank you Lohengrin 0 for posting this. It is most imprortant most of all to hear Troyanos. I don't really care about the others. There is such a lack of elastictic quality in the conducting. The worth in this vid is Troyanos. Wow!

Greece has given us some of the best! But certainly so have many other nations! France, Italy, Spain, Germany... Let's celebrate the Artist and the Artistry and leave the Ethnocentric Nationalism where it belongs: on the bottom shelf of acceptable human emotions...

@@mariaashot5648 I have a soft spot for Greek singers as they have such vibrant voices and an innate sense of drama which moves me deeply when I hear them sing. I therefore mean it when I say they are the best! My comment is motivated out of respect and admiration for their artistry and is certainly not founded on bigotry or ethnicity or nationalism. We are here to enjoy the music and to share our favourite singers and there is really no need for you to police our comments or to lecture us.

it is the Mediterranean passion.. same applies to Spanish singers and if you think all these years how many Legends Spain has produced... what the world of opera would have done without Spain

@@LohengrinO Agree! It is the passion and the identification with the culture and the language which produces such memorable performances. I was fortunate to see Caballe, Berganza, Kraus and Carreras in the 80s when they were already legends but the tenor I love the most is Jaime Aragall - he has the voice of an angel and no one I have seen since has displaced him. Thank you Lohengrin O for your labour of love in putting up this site - it has brought me unending pleasure!
