A foundational video to understand matching collar to tie. The most useful one I've seen. Easy to follow instructions on each knot to tie. I'm impressed with the tips this video offers as well. Excellent!
Glad you found the video of use and enjoyed the additional content in regard to information about shirt collars etc, above and beyond the tie knots. Glad you found the tie knots easy to follow. Thanks for your comments and support 🙂👍
My father taught me the Full Windsor when I was a little boy. I use de Four in Hand. Always in pursuit of the perfect dimple. Never achieved it. Wonderful video!
Sometimes, the slight imperfection provides a point of interest. Having the knot or dimple a bit off center or out of symmetry is actually appealing to the eye in many cases.
Glad to you enjoyed the video and to hear you are a full Windsor knot wearer. A full Windsor is the most formal of knots, but doesn't always suit every occasion or individual, due to the size of the knot, the tie used or the shirt collar used👍🙂 it is always wise to have a selection of different knots in ones arsenal 👍🙂
It’s too much for most occasions. You look like a try hard often. Try the Victoria tie for casual settings…(business parties, family get together) You’d look silly with a Windsor at any of those
Great vid. Finally, someone explaining the relationship between the shirt collar and the tie!. Now shopping for garments and accessories, & let's not forget the jacket, I can use my existing wardrobe effectively and know how to add to it. Too bad my local shops and tailors can not explain something so simple. I now have so many more dress options even with my existing wardrobe that future shopping will be a pleasure rather than a disappointing chore
Great video; I'd only ever heard of the four-in-hand and the full Windsor knots. I'll have to try the others. A suggestion, though - I just learned to tie a full Windsor from another UA-cam video, and that fellow had the good idea to film the video looking into a mirror. That showed the process from the point of view of the person tieing the knot, which was helpful.
My dad was very old school Italian man always wore a full Windsor or the half I learned how to do a Windsor I needed a refresher on a Windsor knots thank you your a gentleman
My favourite knot when suited to the shirt is the full windsor, and the result on the half windsor demo' looked stunning. Thanks very much and take care. David.
I used to tie my ties using four in hand knot and half windsor knot. This video has greatly helped me to know about all the four knots and when to use each of them. Many thanks.
Nice dissertation. My preference is confirmed as the full Windsor, despite the collar. Oh thanks about the advice on the tie pin, bar and length. you wear ties like a gentleman, and I applaud you sir.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge sir. I had no idea there were numerous ways to tie a necktie, although I had noticed some knots appeared more professional.
Very nice and informative. I actually learned to tie a full Windsor knot in Marine Corps boot camp and it was the only knot I used for many years. Recently I've been experimenting with other knots and I happen to be wearing the four in hand knot while watching this.
Glad you enjoyed the video Aron and thank you for your feedback. I tend to use this range of tie knots depending on the level of formality. I find that they provide enough variety. Thank you for your support 🙂👍
The half Windsor is the man for all seasons, but 4 in hand is great for the relaxed look with a tweed jacket on the weekend, when we are all trying to look like off-duty Spitfire pilots! Great video 👍
Great video, my personal favorite is the full Windsor but can’t go wrong with any of them! You should do a tie collection video if you haven’t already would love to see some of those unique colors and patterns. Thanks for the video, Cheers 🥂
I want to just say thank you, I had no idea there were different ways to tie a tie, I'm also thankful that you took the time to explain the way the collar is the difference in the tie of the tie & the difference it looks also, I feel as though I'm rambling on, but you are very informative, an I say thank you for that. Sincerely, Dennie
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 to answer your question, it really depends on the level of formality, I find that the four in had or the thinker Victoria knots are great for less formal tie wear and the half & full Windsor knots are better from more formal wear. Traditionally a full Windsor would have been expected. Hope that helps 👍🙂
Thank you. I made a mighty half Windsor right through school (we called it a samosa) but forgot the art. Regret that I tied a school boy at a cousin's wedding 15 years later. Hate the pictures. This reminded me on how to make a good knot. Many thanks.
Great presentation, thank you! I never understood why the Windsor is so revered. To me, the narrower knots like the Prince Albert look better, and are what I wore back in the early 90s. But then, I also wore shirts with snap-ties to bring the collar together, and elevate the knot. Nowadays, my wardrobe is all open-necked seersucker, and Birkenstocks 😂
As to me, I used to wear ties with all these types knots... It is much more interesting now that I know them by names! Thank you, very clear and comprehensive explanation!!. (and that gentlemen's dimple!!)
Thanks to my dad who taught me how to do the "half winsdor" ❤ , for the rest i figured it out myself watching videos over and over , and standing in front of my mirror practicing til my hands start to hurt 😅
@@TheBritishDapper Hello Sir Salute to you too , I learned a lot from your channel. Yes practicing is the secret . Sometimes I used to be discouraged when I mess up the tie and had to start again 😂. But I kept trying until I succeeded. Anyway nice work Sir. Keep it up 😎

I just got my favorite tie back from the cleaners and I told them to please re-knot it because I don't know how to tie a tie and it's been so long I'll bet someone did it for me. Well, it got return untied, but that's probably their standard. I looked at those "10-second knot" videos and didn't like the looks. Your Half Windsor tutorial was straightforward and actually worked, and the shirt collar is a little big, but it will suffice, rather than going and trying the Full Windsor. I have a bunch of spare ties that are going to the cleaners now, and will try your Full Windsor tutorial when they return from the cleaners. Thanks for doing this, somehow you make the formal knots look easy.
I'm pleased the video helped you and you found it relatively easy to tie the Half Windsor knot. Thank you for your lovely comments and support for the channel 🙂👍
I enjoyed the video. It helped me to tie the tie for my eight year old grandson whom i was left alone with when the parents were away. The first time it was difficult. I think at his school they noted that the tie was not done well.
Hi Patricia, glad you enjoyed the video and it helped you succeed, it does take practice to prefect the knots shown in the video, but glad to hear you persevered 👍🙂
so I have been rocking the Half & Full Windor Knots all these years... never knew what it was called then i just agent 007 did it in a movie. Awesome video. Thanks.🎉
I would say it would be wise to have more than 1 tie if you are wearing a suit all the time. Ties do become worn over time, so it is better to rotate them, generally 4 ties is considered a good starting point. But if you can only afford 1 tie, then your options are limited until you add to it. as for having the same pattern or design, the tie is a way of showing your personality, many people only wear paisley ties, but have a range of colours and the same for people who only wear stripped ties. It is the range of colours that is important. Hope this helps you🙂
Omg thank you very much for all the help, you're the best on this project, you help me so much, I really appreciate this so much because you help me how to 👔 tie a tie,Respect again every time

Excellent, thanks for the tutorial. The Full Windsor is the only one I knew but now I've got different ways. The origins of the names would be very interesting 🤔.
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it of benefit. The origins of the Windsor knot, often called the Double Windsor and not to be confused with the Double knot, was named for the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII. It was invented by and for King George V, his father, who favoured a bulky knot on a thick tie and loved the full look it gave him. 👍🙂

19:07 when demonstrating where to place the clip!!! The tie looks absolutely perfect 👌 and the dimple knot is beautiful. What is called and can you us how to do it. Great video mate
This is such an excellent and informative video. I was a guest at a wedding the other day and, being in Highland dress, I had a tartan tie in wool. The things I've learned from a few such experiences with Highlandwear wool ties or "clan ties" are: 1. The most formal tie knot I can manage is a half windsor. A full windsor knot is too large. 2. It should ideally have a cutaway collar shirt. 3. The length of the tie won't matter so much as you will end up tucking your tie into your kilt, and you wear a waistcoat. 4. A tie bar would be awkward, especially with the waistcoat. 5. I can never get a dimple with a tie like that but I think that's fine Not sure if this information from me will be helpful but anyone reading this will notice how the good advice from Chris in this video can be applied across the board and across various dress codes
Good advice Alexander. Thank you. Having a waistcoat certainly makes life easier when it comes to covering up any unevenness in the length of the tie itself. It also allows you to tie a bigger knot if the collar will allow it (like Prince Michael of Kent). One additional lesson I have learnt the hard way is to always wash your hands with soap and hot water and then dry them before tying a tie. The natural oils on your fingers - even if your hands appear to be clean - can soon make the tie fabric grubby around the knot. Dry cleaning a tie these days isn't cheap - as I have recently discovered! Best wishes.
@@TheBritishDapper Good point, Chris. I recently had some ties dry cleaned - the first time I have done so for many years. The cost? £6.25p per tie.🤕 Even ones made of polyester stipulate dry cleaning. Having freshly washed hands in the first place is a much cheaper - and convenient - option.🙂
Great video, sir. I've been practicing my tie knots recently and watching vids on different types. I particularly like the way you went from four in hand to Victoria (first time i heard of it) to the Prince Albert (I'd seen a vid on how to do it, but yours made it easy to remember).
thank for your great comments, glad you appreciated the planned deliver and levels of formality the ties were demonstrated, which one is your favourite knot? 🙂
That's a good overview of different knots and how you do them! I was a firewoman and on special events, we were also wearing a tie. I didn't open the knot after wearing the tie because I was not sure if I could do it again 😄You're video would have been very helpful 👍
Hi there, with a cutaway collar it can accommodate a full Windsor knot, but depending on the size of the gap you could use other less formal knots, but yes as a generalisation a full Windsor knot would go well with a cutaway collared shirt😊
@@TheBritishDapper Thank you. And I appreciate you clarifying the dimple thing 21:31. I never used to put a dimple but seeing some other videos got me thinking I had it all wrong. I think i might try the dimple next time but i still think i prefer the no-dimple look
As per your advice very good and admariable and simple i am very excited to get and going to wear your information that may be follw your advice i watch so many people, but your information is my view very useful for me thank you.❤
Thank you, I appreciate this, I always have smaller thinner side too long pass the thicker side, or vice-versa, several times, tired of this over and over again.
As an uninitiated tie fellow was surprised to hear that the dimple was a desirable trait. I'd say that if I were to wear a tie it would be with the Half Windsor or the Victoria, since those seem to have less attention on the knot visually.
Hello everything is fine? I found your channel a little while ago and I already subscribed here and left a like. I'm Brazilian and I think your work here is very well done and with a very good explanation and easy to understand. Thanks for the shared content.
Hi Ruth, glad you enjoyed the video, tying a tie is a life skill I was tort from the age of 5, in in the UK a lot of children still learn that skill where ties are expected to be worn as part of a school uniform. Sadly not many people continue to wear ties after that, with the exception of when wearing a suit, which seems to be quite rare nowadays, but wearing a tie for church is a great opportunity to wear one. Thanks for your comments👍🙂
I like to wear neckties only for special/formal occasions. When I wear a tie it's always a full windsor and nothing short of it. Sometimes it has a dimple sometimes not. I foucs on the size and look of the knot and the length of the tie after it is tied. Once i have the look i want in those two areas of the tie then I'm satisfied. I have about a total of approximately 40 different ties of various materials and I like them all to varying degrees. The color and design of the tie I wear always depends on the color of the shirt I'm going to wear. That said, the way I determine what outfit I'm going to wear I usually start with the tie I want to wear first, then I pick my shirt to go with the tie and not vice versa.
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video, and it's good to hear you have a preferred knot to use. your ensemble choices based upon the colour of your tie choice is a tried and tested method. Thanks for your comments👍🙂
Great job. I have applied all the knots you showcased, but more importantly I particularly enjoyed the Tie/Shirt collar relationship. Well worth knowing. Thank you.
in the early part of the Victorian period they were still wearing cravats (ascot), with a long silk scarf, they tended to use a lose bow in it. The modern tie, we all associate with now was invented or created later. Hope that helps 🙂
Thank you for demystifying the "Prince Albert" knot: the most elegant of the five in my opinion.
Thank you and glad you enjoyed the video👍🙂
Agreed! I started with half-winsdor, but find the aesthetics of "Prince Albert" most appealing to my taste...

Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful🙂👍
I've always previously worn the schoolboy knot but I'll definitely be practicing and perfecting the other variations you reviewed!
I'm pleased you found the video of use and enjoy the other types of tie knot🙂
This is such an excellent and informative video. I was a guest at a wedding the other day and, being in Highland dress, I had a tartan tie in wool. The things I've learned from a few such experiences with Highlandwear wool ties or "clan ties" are:
5. I can never get a dimple with a tie like that but I think that's fine
Not sure if this information from me will be helpful but anyone reading this will notice how the good advice from Chris in this video can be applied across the board and across various dress codes
love your comments, pleased you have gained so much from the videos🙂
Good advice John about having clean hands when tying your knot to prevent grubby stains, dry cleaning reduces the life of a tie as well🙂
@@TheBritishDapper Good point, Chris.
Would have to say the four in hand, as I can tie it from memory, followed by the half Windsor.
@@BigBobster86 that's great news, as you are covered for informal and formal situations 🙂
I like and prefer the half Windsor for formal occasions. Great tie tie lesion
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and the half Windsor is a great knot for more formal occasions - great choice👍🙂
That's a good overview of different knots and how you do them! I was a firewoman and on special events, we were also wearing a tie. I didn't open the knot after wearing the tie because I was not sure if I could do it again 😄You're video would have been very helpful 👍
Glad you found the video enjoyable and informative 🙂
I finally found this video. I can now learn how to tie a tie right. Thanks sir
Hi Mo glad the video helps 👍🙂
For a cutaway collar shirt, I'm guessing the full windsor knot would be best? 2:21
Finally💪🏾👏🏾I have mixed collars and been messing with tie sizes and colour ranges.
Thank you
hope you enjoyed the video and have fun with it. We will be producing more videos.
As per your advice very good and admariable and simple i am very excited to get and going to wear your information that may be follw your advice i watch so many people, but your information is my view very useful for me thank you.❤
Thank you for your kind words and pleased you found the information useful👍🙂
Very beautiful, presentation, informative...a true gentleman 's episode 👏👏
Thank you very much🙂
Thank you, I appreciate this, I always have smaller thinner side too long pass the thicker side, or vice-versa, several times, tired of this over and over again.
Glad it was helpful🙂
Thank you very much. You helped me a lot 🙂
You are welcome Marko👍🙂
As an uninitiated tie fellow was surprised to hear that the dimple was a desirable trait. I'd say that if I were to wear a tie it would be with the Half Windsor or the Victoria, since those seem to have less attention on the knot visually.
Glad you enjoyed the video and the half Windsor and the Victoria are great choice of knots. 👍🙂
Hello everything is fine? I found your channel a little while ago and I already subscribed here and left a like. I'm Brazilian and I think your work here is very well done and with a very good explanation and easy to understand. Thanks for the shared content.
Glad you enjoyed the video and I'm please you subscribed. Thank you for your support🙂
I really like the first two knots, they look more elegant! Thank you sir for showing us.. it was very useful 👍
I'm please the video was of use to you, have you tried any of the other knots shown or do you have a knot you use or prefer?
Enjoyed, didnt know. No man to tell except my son. Dont know if he ever wears a tie, he does go to church.😊
Thank you so much! You gave me so much advise that my father and grandfather never know
Thank you for your comments and glad I could help👍🙂
What style would the mods wear in the 60’s ?
Hi there, they would tend to have worn a narrower tie and used a tight knotted half Windsor, with a suit or jacket🙂 hope that helps👍
@@TheBritishDapper
Thankyou for replying and the information yes that’s great 👍
Absolutely belter of a video. Thank you very much, sir!
Thank you for your lovely comments and support👍🙂
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful to you and thank you for your constructive comments 🙂
Four in hand is actually easier than I thought, looks classy. Love it !! Thanks brother
Glad to help and thankyou for your positive comments😀
Thank you sir for the clear and easy to follow instructions
Glad it helped and you enjoyed the video🙂
Wonderful! The last one is my favorite.
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video🙂👍
Thank you, tie man
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video👍🙂
Can you tell me what kind of knot they used in the early victorian era?
in the early part of the Victorian period they were still wearing cravats (ascot), with a long silk scarf, they tended to use a lose bow in it. The modern tie, we all associate with now was invented or created later. Hope that helps 🙂
@@TheBritishDapper thanks, if you have the time i would appreciate a video about how to tie a silk scarf from that period.
