A Sartorial Journey - Introducing A Shirt, Shoes, Trousers And Jackets
Hello Chris. I like Gangnam shirts I never thought about using it with a suit. Looks good. I usually wear it or tattersall with tweed. I really like the first grey Prince of Wales outfit. It also looks very nice with the purple tie. I need to get a Prince of Wales grey suit. It really looks sharp. Cheers Ron
Another nice job Chris
Agree, navy tie is perfect with the shirt. I plan on buying some Turnbull and Asser pocket squares in the spring and a new pair of Church's shoes. I am too tweedy at the moment and want to become more formal.
Hi James, glad you agree with the tie selection and it sounds like you can't wait for spring. I have a pair of Church's brogue shoes in chestnut and they are fantastic in the fit for me, but I was put off by Prada taking over the brand. I do love Joseph Cheaney or Crockett & Jones as an alternative brand and recently bought a pair of Joseph Cheaney - again another great fit, the leather is just so supple - like wearing carpet slippers😆 Have a great day👍🙂
@@TheBritishDapper Good comments, thank you.
Have you covered trouser lengths? No break, half break etc. I am always “interested” to see someone with trousers that are not (for me) the correct length with excess cloth around the ankles. I would not have considered a double breasted suit with notch lapels. The width of lapels seems to vary in cycles although I have always favoured medium wide but haven’t seen any “stylish” DB suits with notch lapels
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video, I have briefly covdered trouser length in the past and although this video covers a number of issues to avoid, it does cover the trouser break, ua-cam.com/video/ghLA5yRsTVM/v-deo.html hope this helps, let me know how you get on or if you'd like more information on this suject. As for double breasted jackets, the width of the lapel does vary and this can be as a result of the era the suit was made. Made to measure or bespoke can be the better way of getting what you want with the style and type of lapel you'd like with a double breasted suit or jacket. Medium width of lapel is a good one (very classic) never in or out of fashion and the width of the lapel doers dictate the width of the tie worn 🙂 Let me know how you get on in your search🙂👍
@ thank you for the referral. I’ve watched it and certainly agree about what looks best for slim or regular width trousers. I always associate - going back to my days working in Soho in the 60’s with shops like Squires, Village Gate, Cecil Gee and others, no break with the US. My “history” is having half break and full break about 1” longer in both cases to what you show - but there is no right or wrong and just a matter of taste.
Any other ways you'd dress down a suit? i have some lighter suits i acquired recently, im hoping to wear them almost casually. adding colour is definitely part of that, as is more casual shoes (brown derbies, tan chelseas and brown loafers, even light tan boots with broguing are in my collection) but i wonder if im missing a trick?
Hi James, Glad you enjoyed the video, and great to hear you acquired some lighter suits. Adding colour via a shirt, tie or pocket square will always lift the level of informality. You mentioned footwear as a way of also making the look less formal, had you considered Suede shoes, coloured Patina monk strap shoes or spectator shoes in various styles and colours 🤔 Have fun and let me know how your adventure in making a more casual look goes👍🙂
@@TheBritishDapper ooh I do have some suede shoes in my collection I'd forgotten. Burgundy red shoes (that I could pair with red and pink tones perhaps), some chocolate brown loafers, and some tan derbies. Not worn any for a while that could definitely work add a texture. I also have some dark green single monks that might look rather special...
@@jamesswingland3373 Hi James, now you've got it, creative juices kickstarted 🤣 Glad I could help🙂
Final ensemble looks good.
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and the content👍🙂
The double-breasted grey Prince of Wales suit shown at 10.30 is magnificent, as are the pocket square and tie. What a wonderful outfit! Excellent observation regarding the purple colour; I have never considered it. The tie is gorgeous. In my case, the Gingham shirts belong to the "Hate" department 😂😂😂 Thank you for all the valuable tips. Greetings from Buenos Aires.
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and found it inspirational. I totally understand you not liking Gingham shirts and no offence taken 😆, but I used it in this video merely to demonstrate the use of pattern and colour. The shirt is a little extreme for formal wear, but great for adding personality in a more informal situation 🙂 Greeting from the UK👍
Nice one Chris. Now that is what I call a clever pairing of colour shades. I note the shirt also has a double cuff for that extra lift of smartness. Perfect with a navy blue suit. 👍
Hi John, glad you liked it and you are quite right this look paired with a Navy blue suit would look great 🙂👍
Excellent combination as usual
Thanks James, glad you liked it🙂👍
@ superb eye for colours
Purple hues with a navy blazer and grey flannel trousers. Top it off with some burgundy kilty tassel loafers and navy braces. Cheers Chris 👍😄
Very Nice ensemble Douglas, alas I have no burgundy Kiltie tasselled loafers now, I had a lovely pair of Bally and need to get a replacement pair some day🤔👍
Not only the tie is nice, the shirt is very dapper! Which brand is it?
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and the shirt is one I have had for a lot of years now, it is from the M&S Sartorial range 100% cotton, it holds its shape well and wears well, I have another one very similar in quality, but with a navy overcheck from Brook Taverner👍🙂
Hi Patrice, glad you enjoyed the video and my tie choice for today. Thanks for your video suggestion and you have a good day as well🙂
You're a honorable legend Sir! Thank you. I wish you could also do a video on how to wear a pocket square, please. Cheers from the cradle of civilisations Iran (occupied by mullas)
Hi there, thank you for your compliments and your video suggestion, my regards and best wishes👍🙂
I really enjoy doing this to my shoes but at the end I uses some tyre shine
Gllad you enjoyed the video, but when it comes to using tyre shine😆 Your an absolute heathen 😆 have a great day👍
The mustache is majestic✨️
Thank you James🙂
Fresh
Thanks 👍
Really like pink with Blue
Thanks Ron, they are a great colour combination👍🙂
Very smart, Chris. I would have gone for a tie with some sort of pattern to it rather than plain navy with a navy suit (that is what it looks like in the video). In your defence, you have compensated by injecting a variation of textures between the suit and the tie.👍 The pink gingham shirt offers a well chosen bold note and the pocket square breaks the blue backdrop up perfectly without shouting for attention. Love the shoes. These Wednesday's Wear 'shorts' are always interesting for the way you often challenge our thoughts on the alternatives for putting an outfit together. It is also helpful that you always show us the entire outfit from head to toe. That is equally important and much appreciated. Thank you.😊
Hi John, glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate the purpose of the videos to inspire and show alrenatives to peoples usual way of dressing. True I could have used a patterned tie, but because the shirt is a bold colour, I thought that needed to be tamed alittle by a plain tie with a bit of texture. The pocket square adds a pop of colour, yet is not to load. The shoes are Loake design called 'Clint', great for a less formal suit wear. Lovely to hear from you and catch up soon👍🙂
Hi Chris super look encore aujourd'hui 👍
Thank you Patrice👍🙂
Good show Chris 👍. The contrast is especially interesting. Using high contrast with a bold color is a look that always draws attention and compliments. Cheers
Hi Douglas, glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 and you are right if you want to draw attention then a bold coloured shirt is one way of getting it👍Have a great day 🙂
Wow what a great video. Thanks mate. Which I lived in the UK. Truly the fashion capital of the world.
Glad you are enjoyed the video Heleen. I love UK, but there are many more places in the world that you fashion forward - Paris, milan, Florence, New York for example and many others 👍🙂
If I may ask, how do you ensure for your pocket square to stay Upright instead of dropping into the pocket mine does that all the time
Hi there, you can buy a cheap holder, they are very successful in maintaining the pocket square's position👍🙂
@ ah I will do that thank you
I was against suede from a ruggedness standpoint and ability to handle the elements. I was introduced to CF Stead's Repello line of Suede with is tanned with chemicals to make the highly resistant to water and stains for the life of the shoe. A periodic addition of Saphir Invulner Spray keeps them insured for rain or light snow. I find the shoes great for business casual travel as well as they dont get scratched or nicked like leather shoes. I was fortunate to be able to invest in a pair of high quality dark brown oxford suedes shoes with rubber soles.
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and its great to hear you have come around to wearing suede shows. Suede is hardier than most people think and with regular maintanence cleaning they will last you years. Thanks for sharing your experiences👍🙂
Great video Chris. For me stylish dressing can also be informal, certainly if the material is elegant and of nice quality.
Hi Sjoerd, glad you enjoyed the video and I agree with you stylish and elegant dressing can be still achieved with the ensemble if formal or informal 👍🙂
Good evening! Chris. I'm from the US, and I enjoyed your video pertaining to field jackets. I love your dress wear as well, awesome mustache, by the way. I want to let you know that I'm a Christian here in America and my prayers are that you and your family also as well as your viewers, and subscribers will make it into heaven! By accepting JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR! FOR THE BEST. BEST CLOTHING WE CAN HAVE IS A WHITE ROBE WITHOUT SPOT OR BLEMISH, ONCE WE ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS OUR LORD! AND SAVIOR! AND WE TURN AWAY FROM OUR SINS! THAT WHITE ROBE THAT HAS BEEN WASHED THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS! IT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT GARMENT WE CAN EVER WEAR IN THE SIGHT OF GOD!Revelation 7:9-10 NKJV [9] After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, [10] and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 🙏❤️✝️🙏
Hi there. Thank you so much for your kind message and for taking the time to watch my video. I truly appreciate your kind words about my content and style-it means a lot! It’s thoughtful of you to share your heartfelt sentiments, and I genuinely appreciate your good wishes for me and my family. Wishing you and yours all the best as well 👍🙂
I'm sorry. No matter what kind of male drag you wear, nothing can make you look attractive.
Cheers to that!👍
Yuor welcome👍
Great video Chris. I love to see the British Warm. I always wanted one but could not find one in my size yet. Msybe one day I will. I strive with my style for the middle of the style range. Not outdated but also not trendy. Timeless like Cary Grant.
Hi Kay, glad you enjoyed the video and I agree with you the British Warm is a great addtion to any persons wardrobe. Your consider approach to being timeless like Cary Grant is a great way of hitting that middle ground between fashion or traditional and not looking to dated or to trendy - Classically stylish to in my opinion on point 👍🙂
Unfortunately there aren’t many places left that we can dress up, there was a time people put their nicest clothes on to go to church and that dress was called Sunday’s best.
The question is what you see a dressing up. When you come from hoodies, pajama pants and crocks to wearing chinos, dress shirt, sport coat and dress shoes, yes it can be seen as dressing up. In my mind the described look with the sport coat can be your everyday look. When you do it on a regular basis, I guarantee you, you will not see it as dressing up anymore.
Hi there, there is always somewhere to go dressed up, its just the level of dress you are talking about. Yuo should consider events in your area, that you couldf dress up for, charity events etc, or clubs or groups to join. I would note that Kay makes some excellent points👍🙂
Hi Kay excellent points and observations by you👍Thank you for your comments👍🙂
Great video, would you please share the brand of the beautiful burgundy pair of brogues. I love your shoes they have that rounded toe that I love, not easy to find these days with the trend to make everything slimmer. I like that classic British conservative rounded toe shoes.
Hi there, glad your enjoying my videos. The Burgundy brogues were from Samuel Windsor called Cheltenham, I believe they still do them (a great cheap option), and Loake or Barkers also sell a nice city brogue in Burgundy. Hope that helps👍🙂
many thanks for this information. I will go and check that out. Really appreciated
Hi Mr. Chris. How do you feel about suede hole cut shoes? Some say their pointless as hole cuts are supposed to be formal but others say they go great with tweed. I think suede brogues are more me, but would like your opinion
Hi Sean, I love suede wholecut shoes. Whilst leather wholecut shoes are considered to be formal, there is a difinite place for the suede version of them. They go really well with more informal suit wears (especially in summer). They also go extremely well with Chinos, flannels and even jeans as a stylish addition to an ensemble, which would include tweed. Italians love them and I would argue that if there was no demand, then why would some of the most prestigous shoesmakers in the world make them. 👍🙂
people think class style every limited but in reality there choices more than our wardrobe can take or our wallet can afford .
Hi Samy, Interesting point you make🙂
@@TheBritishDapperhi ,thanks .
Hi Chris very Good vidéo and style it s always sorry for my english thank you. 🇨🇵🇬🇧❤
Hi Patrice, glad you enjoyed the video and its content. Your English is good and thank you👍🙂
Very insightful Chris. I agree with you on dressing well and stylish making you feel good about yourself and invoking confidence. I always tend to Carry myself better when I'm dressed nicely. Don't rush and carry yourself with confidence and be a respectful gentleman. Cheers Ron
Hi Ron, glad you enjoyed the video and its content. Nice to hear my comments resonate with you👍🙂
That is a very nice Attire of yours
Thank you very much 👍🙂
@@TheBritishDapper you are very welcome
Very good video. One problem is finding places to go while dressed stylishly. One must consider the lifestyle, the usual routine. Also, it should be considered that we should not become "collectors" of a nice wardrobe. We should have what we can and do wear. Not a closet full of nice clothes that do not get any wear.
Just wear them and make it your look.
Hi William, dressing stylish starts with you, when it comes to life style and routine, I acknowledge it can be awkward to find opportunities to venture forth to find venues, clubs and acquaintances. Dressing stylish is something I personally strive for on a daily basis, and Douglas makes a very valid point wear them and own your personal style👍🙂
I'll wear a nice suit just to go shopping at Walmart. 😅
@@seansimmons73 walk into Costco with slacks and a blazer and the crowds of people part for you like the red Sea and a red carpet rolls out before you
@@TheBritishDapper Cheers to that! 👍
All the outfits shown are excellent. You really are THE BRITISH DAPPER! I love the beautiful shine of your shoes; it shows a great deal of dedication and attention to detail. Please DO NOT promote sneakers! They are only to be seen at the gym or on a tennis court. 😁😁😁All the best from sunny Buenos Aires! PS: Is the beautiful dark blue overcoat shown at 5.15 a military garment? It looks wonderful!
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and its content. I always clean my shoes and tend to give them a little mirror shine just for good measure. I only mention sneakers as the are very common for that casual look and the boating scene, but I promote the use of traditional shoes. The Navy coat is not a military item, but it is a fine example of a british wool coat 👍🙂 best wishes from the UK🙂
Another fantastic video by the DP 👏 Keep up the good work Sir 😉
Thank you👍🙂
@@TheBritishDapperGreat video Chris. Cheers
Excellent Chris, and what a great idea showing us what this shirt and tie combo would go well with.👍
Hi John, glad you liked the video and the suggested pairings🙂
I quite like the tie, though if I did may ask what is the reason for the pocket on your shirt?
This is a standard shirt🙂👍
Hi Chris super look encore aujourd'hui et j aurais encore besoins d un conseils peut-on mettre une cravate avec une chemise tattersall et encore un grand merci pour res conseils et vidéos bonne soirée a toi
Hi Patrice, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes you can certainly wear a tie with a tattershall shirt, I would suggest a plain coloured tie would go particularly well - I would suggest a wool or knitted tie for informal looks, but a plain coloured silk one would also go well for a more formal look, Burgundy, blues or dark greens go well for the country look. Hope that helps 👍🙂
That's how I like to dress I also like to dress like Dr Watson In A Country Squire
Glad you enjoyed the video and to hear you dress similarly 👍🙂
Good morning Chris great look with the V neck sweater. Cheers Ron
Hi Ron, glad you like it👍
Smart. I have a nice John Smedley forest green v neck that would go well with. Nice choices Chris.
Hi James, glad you ejoyed the video and john Smedley is a nice brand and the colour goes really well IMO👍🙂
Hello sir, I love the v-neck jumper look! Where could I find v-neck jumpers similar to yours? Same question goes for crew neck jumpers / cardigans. Any tips?
Hi there glad you enjoyed the video. Depending where you live - i would suggest you consider shop.britishwool.org.uk/product-category/men/jumpers-knitwear-mens/ or you could consider www.charlestyrwhitt.com/uk/mens-knitwear/ or www.brooktaverner.co.uk/knitwear-collection.html or www.houseofbruar.com/mens/knitwear/ or finally www.hawesandcurtis.co.uk/menswear/knitwear/. Additionally you could consider search by brand name as mentioned by James - John Smedley, you could also try Easy or Crew Clothing. I have recently been put off buying jumpers from brands like Marks & Spencers. I would always recommend 100% wool, cashmere, marino, alpaco etc, hope that helps 👍🙂
Salut Chris superbe caban qui va parfaitement avec cette tenue une question est-ce qu un duffel coat aurait donné le même effet merci beaucoup pour tes vidéos toujours au top
Hi Patrice, glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 a duffel coat would go realy well for this casual look. In this video I did try and use this British Warm Coat (a formal coat) in a much more casual manner 👍🙂
I have a navy peacoat that I wear on a similar way to your outfit today all the time - casual - over a sweater or an Oxford shirt or even a t shirt - then over jeans over boots or even white sneakers. I add a punchy and bright scarf and I’m all set - wearing a combination that’s really elegant but also easy going and cool. I’m loving what you’ve done with this look. Have a safe day mate.
Hi there, a peacoat is a fantastic jacket for a person's wardrobe and is very stylish for those casual days. The use of a bright coloured scarf reallly does draw attention. You describe a number of key items that create an easy going yet elegant series of looks. Glad you enjoyed the video👍🙂
Great look with that fantastic coat Chris!
Thank you 👍🙂
Excellent.
Great winter coat Chris. Very classy looking. I got lucky and picked up a perfect one at my local Goodwill shop. Stolen for $35. I left the store and drove off as fast as a thief.🎉. Cheers
Hi Douglas, that does sound like a real steal 😆
