Hi Everyone, what's your favourite sounding kick drum? Any genre, any song, any album, any player! Check out Ariel's course for only $27 here: promixacademy.com/course/mixing-hip-hop-with-ariel-chobaz/
I'm more into metal, So Vinnie Paul Pantera had a great kick tone, also Slayer in general. Andy Sneaps and Andrew Scheps in general always get a lot of great kick tones, Kohle is also great with kick and snares.
Kohle rules with drums!@@CrushingAxes
Bernard Purdie's kick on "Babylon Sisters" by Steely Dan is one of my all time favorites, but there's so much to pick from. A totally different kick, but I love how the kick of Magnus Öström sounds on "From Gagarin's point of view" by the Esbjorn Svensson Trio(also known as E.S.T. @@Producelikeapro
Are those pensado kicks available?
So cool!@@hiddesmedinga3420 great reference
He got that kick knocking for sure
Indeed! Marvellous
Great stuff Ariel thanks very much and a big thanks to the PLAP team
Thanks ever so much Ariel!
the kick and snare samples are included with the course. for those that are interested. i just purchased the course.
Marcellus! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Always great info from Ariel!
Yes, he's amazing!
An api 2500 combined with the old Pultec dbx trick really gets the job done for me in any genre
Tell us about the old Pultec DBX trick!
@@Producelikeapro certainly, you insert a pultec first into a parallel channel for a kick then insert the dbx vca compressor … then on the pultec, you boost the low end to taste then attenuate the highs all the way then back off some to taste, set the band with to either 3 or 4 and the attenuation amount to 5, after that you set the dbx to give you about two db gain reduction I usually accomplish that by setting ratio to 2 then moving threshold until desired gr … set output to 0 because you don’t want any added gain … then just like normal parallel compression you adjust the fader of the channel to blend the effects into your kick … sounds like a lot in writing but it’s very simple and very reliable
PS the API 2500 is a part of my drum bus which can also consist of some saturation depending on the genre
Interesting approach. I personally love sculpting drum sampler/sounds, especially in the hip-hop genre which is like a huge sandbox to play with designing drums.
Thanks ever so much!
The first thing I would do is lower the gain of the clip. It's printed insanely loud. I don't see compression as a fix for that...best to adjust gain on the tracks before you even start mixing.
Indeed. However, he's using the compressor as a tool for shaping the kick
Agreed
He's not using compression just to turn it down Haha@@synthzizer3324 He's shaping the sound
Most fun part of mixing
Agreed! Getting the drums right is huge
Ariel is such a G.
Ariel is the man!
If you can mix rock song with over 150 tracks and make a kick hearable you should mix any genre no problem
Very true! Haha
150 tracks is a complete lie. 150 items will not be playing at the same time, I garintee it. I put money on it no more than 10 -20 actual original, in the raw items/instruments will strike at the exact same time. This doesn't include building up false doubles, triples or fx sends etc. I'm talking raw tracks of audio as originally recorded or imported from a loop maker.
I've mixed songs with a full band, 18 tracks on drums, 3 on Bass, 2 on each guitar amp with 5 or 6 parts@@synthzizer3324 layered acoustic guitars, lead vocal with double, synth, piano and organ. Then a full orchestra and a ton of BVs, maybe 16 tracks? Track count of sounds playing at the same time can get very high!
@Producelikeapro drums as a whole i see as an instrument.. but point noted, but did it sound something like this? ua-cam.com/video/HilGthRhwP8/v-deo.htmlsi=UCHxlVeYIK-KfJcO
Thanks. :)
Thank you! You're welcome!
HI . WHERE DO I FIND THE PENSADO KICK SAMPLES ? HAVE DONE SOME SEARCHING BUT CANT FIND A LINK
Ariel includes all the samples he uses in his course. Not sure where else they are
Also choose your limiter very wisely material dependant. Gain down the actual audio on file if required. A massive fat kick looks like a triangle on its side with slightly rounded points on the leading edge. You dont need to stack any kicks up with different processing if you achieve a perfect triangle. I garintee it.
Thanks ever so much of sharing!
Sam and I are first to comment! Love Ariel's mixing tips, thank so much for the great content!
Thanks Mary and Sam!
Don't know much about hip hop, but that's a very nice video!
Thanks ever so much!
How is done mixing and production on an analogue console? You record band with dry sound with a/d converter into protools, then put signal via analogue mixing console and many analogue inserts with multiple outputs and record back to protools? Probably recording with all signal chains is bad idea, if you want to correct it.
Most of the time, in a hybrid situation, you would sum your outputs from your DAW. I have my Sub come up on a separate fader, all the other kicks are combined from my DAW
funny to hear "control dynamics" of a programmed kick drum hitting every time same volume))))
Hi Greg! Thanks for your comment! I suppose? Ultimately controlling the attack and release of a sound is controlling the dynamics.
@@Producelikeapro i can agree on that and disagree at the same time))) in this case it's just simply carving sound
"i'm only into artists that play their own instruments." -guy who mostly plays power chords, doesn't know what to do when asked to play in a different key
SO R-BASS ADDS the frequency selected to the original sound ? thats cheeeeky !!
Arggh!!!! there is nothing worse than hiphop especially the “kick”. I mean what is that? it sounds like someone hitting a wooden box with a rubber mallet…no that’s not it . There is no feel in it’s just bleh!
Haha in all my years of watching UA-cam I've never watched a video on a subject that I wasn't interested in! Haha
@@ProducelikeaproI was curious to see what the difference is to my regret😂😂😂
