Harry Potter was my first film franchise, but from many I’m told Ginny’s potrayal is nothing like the books. That’s not Bonnie Wright’s fault but there are noticable differences between her book and movie counterparts as if they’re two seperate characters.
You sure did miss plenty, since everyone seems to be the perfect and only possible casting choice. And it would take a two hours video to pay hommage to each and everyone of them. Yet I would already add to this list of perfectly cast characters : Richard Griffiths and Fiona Shaw as Vernon and Petunia Dursley Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter (too bad her role was so small in the movie) Ian Hart as Quirinus Quirrell Brendan Gleeson as Alastor Moody John Hurt as Mr. Olivander John Cleese as Nearly-Headless Nick (too bad we don't get to see any of him in the second movie) Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy David Thewlis as Remus Lupin Julie Walters as Molly Weasley There, you have enough names to magically transform your Top 10 into a Top 20.
Alan Rickman's performance as Snape was PERFECTLY PERFECT!! The slow speech, the perfectly timed pauses, the gestures, the looks... It is almost as if the character was crafted especially for him. It doesn't matter if the next actor to portrait Snape is good enough... no one will ever play the greyest character in the Harry Potter universe as Alan did.
I loved Rickman's performance in everything I saw him in. He had a skill to make not just the hero but also the villain likeable. That said, I seriously disliked book-Snape because he was supposed to be dislikeable. In that respect, as amazing as Rickman was as Snape, he was not "perfectly cast" to represent the book Snape. He was amazing all the same.
Absolutely agree! I’ve always felt that they should’ve designated a special Academy award for playing a character so wonderfully over eight movies like he did. It’s still blows my mind that none of these actors were recognized for any of the series.
Don't forget Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, both actors to play Dumbledore. Richard Harris was more book accurate but Gambon after the 4th one at least fit Dumbledore for the darker tone the series was moving to. We unfortunately didn't get to see how Harris could have done it in later adaptations.
David Thewlis as Remus. Perfect casting, and performance. As well as Julie Walters as Molly. The magical mother I bet many of us would love to have. That said, so many of the actors fit the characters they played. My personal favourites though are Jason Issacs as Lucius. A man devoted to his craft, who always knows how to play a baddie well, and John Cleese as Nearly Headless Nick. Sure, John is a small part across the films (basically the first two that are less dark and more family orientated) but, like most things he does, he leaves an impression. Of those mentioned, my favourite is Robbie as Hagrid. I haven't watched the films since his passing. Makes the final scene of Philosopher bittersweet and final scene of Chamber feel like accepting a last goodbye. "There's no Hogwarts without you Hagrid." - Harry Indeed not. If Hogwarts is home, Hagrid is the warmth that keeps it cosy and inviting. The friend you lean on for tea, rock cakes (even if inedible) and 'certain info' that he will admit he 'shouldn't have said that.' As Robbie said at the 20th anniversary reunion, "My children's generation will show them to their children. I'll not be here sadly, but Hagrid will." 😢❤
Gotta give an honorable mention to the castings of Mad-Eye Moody and Kingsley Shacklebolt. The latter definitely deserves more screen time than he got.
I know they cut out a lot of his appearances in some of the films but the late Richard Griffiths also deserved praise for his portrayal of Harry's cruel and hateful muggle uncle Vernon Dursley.
Losing Richard Harris was so sad; he WAS Albus Dumbledore. Gambon was a good replacement, but he just never had that "spark" or "twinkle" that Harris conveyed.
Most of the actors in these movies were perfect for their roles in my opinion but I know that my top favorites are Evanna Lynch as Luna, Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix, Maggie Smith as McGonagall, Alan Rickman as Snape, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, the Phelps twins’ as Fred and George and Imelda Staunton as Umbridge (I honestly feel a little bad saying that), Christian Coulson as Tom Riddle and Richard Harris as Dumbledore.
Imelda was great as Umbridge. She was the character I hated most in the books (even more so than Voldemort) and she was the one I hated most in the movies. A lesser actress could have botched it up big time.
Christian Coulson is so underrated right? He was the perfect teenage Tom Riddle. I know they deemed him too old for half blood prince, but I was gutted when they gave the role to someone else.
I disagree. The movie Hermione is way stronger than the book version, almost but not quite like the despicable girl bosses of Disney lore. She is much more beautiful and also more daring than the book version. It still works because in the books she is also very strong. My favourite Hermione part is the way she masterminds the search for the horcruxes. Ron and Harry would be completely lost without her. It comes as an organic part of her maturation and her character arc and makes her a truly strong and heroic female character that is not the bad copy of a male hero. She is one of my favourite characters in the books and only slightly less so in the movies.
I love how, nearly always, it's Ms Eloise Midgen herself narrating the Potter videos! 😊😊❤❤ I would also add Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter - her role wasn't very big, but it was absolutely PERFECT.
I would place Julie Walters as Molly Weasley in the official place on the list and the twins as the honorable mention. Mrs. Weasley had so much more depth of character throughout the series, and Julie Walters played the part superbly in every significant moment.
Everyone in Harry Potter was casted perfectly. Brendan Gleeson as Mad Eye Moody should have been an honorable mention. He played the complex role of having to be two characters at once. The Polyjuice Potion scene terrifying! And the entire Golden Trio was excellent as well. Sure, Emma Watson didn't have the buck teeth (though they tried), but I can't envision anyone but her playing Hermione Granger.
And I love Daniel's humor as Harry. How he jokes about him being the chosen one but in a humble way too (😢😢😢) and when others are like ugh he's like sorry kidding..making sure they know😂😂😂😂
I love that Jason Issac originally wanted Lockhart and if you watch some of the behind the scenes stuff you can see how sweet he is with the children ie Radcliffe and Felton
I always thought umbridge was worse than Voldemort. She was despicable. All in all I miss the Harry Potter franchise. One of my favorite franchises outside of Star wars.
Well with Umbridge I don’t see a toad much so I don’t agree though the talented woman got the laugh right! You have to compare her doilies to a grindylow tank!
Both Imelda Staunton and Alan Rickman were far too good looking for their characters, and Rickman's Snape is far nicer than book Snape, but that might be the script.
The second I saw Imelda Staunton wasn’t number 1, I knew it would be Alan Rickman. Also, sad that Daniel Radcliffe was number 10 but then again, he’s practically the most underrated character in the series. I only know one person whose favorite Harry Potter character is Harry Potter.
I'll definitely have my children binge-watch The Crown after binge-watching the Harry Potter series. I'll tell them that Umbridge became the Queen. LOL!
Definitely glad they toned down her character though. Book Luna was very fitting of the title of "loony." Movie Luna was a free spirit with her head in the clouds
I think everyone was pretty spot-on. Seriously, the upcoming TV show has alot to live up to with these castings! I would love to see you, Watchmojo make your list on the predictions!
I don’t know about Gary Oldman as Sirius. The film script changed some stuff about his character - he never says “Well done James”, and confuses Harry for James in the book. I thought he’s a great actor but I pictured Sirius differently.
I always imagined McGonagall as somewhere around 50 years old when I read the books, for some reason. But Maggie Smith did a wonderful job so no harm there
Imelda Staunton is my #1. She played Umbridge so well she made me hate her as an actress until I saw her stage work and then playing Queen Elizabeth in the Crown. She was just so convincing and looked the part!
He asked her only because out of all of the characters, he felt he needed to know Severus' backstory and connection to Lily in order to do the role justice.
When I read the first Potter book over 20 years ago, (well before they became movies) I just saw in my head Alan Rickman as Snape... because I thought the description of him reminded me of the Sheriff of Nottingham, but without the beard. So I was a bit surprised when the movies came out and it was him who played the role of Snape
Well, some details is wrong with some of them, and some of it had been easly fixed with makeup or hairvax. But they are al excellent in their roles anyway :) I do ignore Daniels eyecolor and Emmas teethsize tho. I know they tried but it didnt work
I have been a fervent Harry Potter fan from the moment I found the first three books in Costco (or maybe Sam's club) all those years ago. I sat here thinking "If Imelda and Robbie have already been #3 and #2, WHO could be #1???" But it was only because I was so enjoying the video - #1 was perfect. Maybe the best top 10 ever!
I'm one of those readers who pictures actors I'm familiar with as the characters. I pictured Maggie Smith as McGonagall, and Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid. For Umbridge, I had pictured the actress who played the medium in Poltergeist with her short, rotund physique and simpering voice, but since she had passed before the films went into production, they did a good job. For the other characters, the casting was perfect. I had not pictured Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix, but she turned out to be ideal for the role. Likewise, I did not picture Richard Harris, but once he donned the costume and makeup, he was exactly the Dumbledore I had envisioned. I was not entirely happy with Michael Gambon's portrayal at first, but he grew into the part well by the time Order of the Phoenix came around.
Richard Harris as Dumbledore absolutely! I desperately wish we could have seen more of his Dumbledore as the story progressed. Umbridge should have totally been number 1 though. Imelda Staunton was absolutely perfection in that role!
I'm a bit surprised that Katie Leung (Cho Chang), Geraldine Somervile (Lily Potter), David Thewlis (Remus Lupin), and Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody) wasn't mentioned...😢
Also it is sad that Richard Harris (first 2 movies Albus Dumbledore) died after the second movie it is stated that he wished to continue the role even hoping he would overcome his illness and get released from the hospital to continue the role. I agree he was the most accurate to the books and owned the role in the first 2 movies. However Michael Gambon owned the characters attitude to a certain extent. I feel Gambon messed up in the Goblet of fire scene where Dumbledore questions Harry about entering the Tri Wizard Tournament. Because it kind of went against book Dumbledore's character to question with such harshness towards a child.
Matthew Lewis was a risky casting choice considering how the character develops over the years. As an 11 year old, he embodied the perfect representation of Neville. As the story developed, so did Lewis, and in the final three films, he completely filled the shoes of the leader, Neville Longbottom.
Great list for this top ten Harry Potter actors and everyone in this list have done a fantastic job of bringing these amazing characters to life and to those who we have lost they will forever be in our hearts and memories 👍❤️🪄🧙♂️
I agree. She was perfect.. I have to argue with her placement as number 2 on the list though. If you’re comparing to the book, she is nothing like Umbridge in a physical sense
I am currently rereading all the books and I 100% disagree with Alan Rickman's performance as Snape. Book Snape is so much worse than movie Snape. In the book he is way more vindictive and vile to Harry and his friends. Movie Snape was amazing but Rickman made him seem at least a little redeemable and somewhat good. But book Snape is an absolute monster who only changed because of his obsession with lily was stronger than his faith to voldy. There was no good in book Snape he only helped Harry because he had too.
I think the actor who portrayed Nathan from Misfits would be PERFECT as Peeves, and Rudy from Misfits, his actor would’ve been much better as McLaggen.
As others said, everyone was perfectly cast. I'm glad that Alan Rickman got number one since Snape is one of the most complex characters not just in literature but films. Rickman was amazing.
I just wish Dumbledore had actually said that one line the way the book said he was supposed to, Richard would have. A fun fact: I have a friend named Richard Harris and he’s also a big Harry Potter fan 😅
Great list. Here is mine (characters not actors but cgi characters are excluded, otherwise Dobby would deserve at least an honourable mention): Honourable mentions: Lucius Malfoy Dudley Dursley Vernon Dursley Fred & George Weasley Peter Pettigrew Sirius Black Barty Crouch Junior Mad Eye Moody Kingsley Shacklebolt 10: Molly Weasley 9: Remus Lupin 8: Draco Malfoy 7: Luna Lovegood 6: Hagrid 5: Voldemort 4: Umbridge 3: Mc Gonagall 2: Bellatrix 1: Severus Snape I just don’t buy the tragic fate of Harry from Daniel Radcliffs play, however I absolutely buy Mollys will of steel, the way she dominates her environment and her warm motherly instinct. I also buy Lupins fate as an outcast. For the rest of the cast I agree with you and the different positions are just matters of personal taste
I think all the adult characters were SPOT on with the choice of actors. Especially Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham-Carter, Gary Oldman, Richard Harris' Dumbledore!
Movie Umbridge looks NOTHING like book Umbridge. Bellatrix should have been no. 1. The age difference between Alan Rickman and Snape was way too much to be overlooked…
While I agree Daniel Radcliffe is a very good Harry Potter casting. He doesn't have the correct eye color which is green. However I do agree that Daniel really owns the Harry Potter character. I am also glad it didn't keep his career from taking off . Most actors get type casted and thankfully Daniel did not.
Well, vocally, everyone was cast beautifully, I feel that Maggie Smith, among the ones you have mentioned, did the best job at portraying, vocally, since that’s how I view things, the best. It’s that weird combination of I am your teacher and I am also your mother figure, and I therefore will not smother you. This isn’t shown in the movie, in the book, the deathly hallows I think I remember they’re being a line where she ask Harry what he needs, I could be wrong. Or maybe it’s just that line line, what do you need. Somehow I read a depth to that, but I seem to not read in a lot of other characters, either by voice or by page. Once you’ve read the seventh book, the meaning of sniping black becomes rather fitting. By the time Harry enters his classroom, he has been warning her death for 11 years. Please pardon the errors, I am blind due to American condition, and therefore half dictate most of my messages. There were so much of the books that was left out of the actual movies. I understand why, there’s only so much you can put in two hours, But then sometimes I think some of the emotional progression is lost. This is especially true for Neville, there’s a very poignant scene in order of the Phoenix that is not made into the movie. His mother gives him a used gum, wrapper, and that’s really all he gets from her, as a Christmas present. The Longbottom fee is alluded to, is never spelled out. For those who have only seen the movies, they were tortured to the point of insanity where they did not even recognize their own son. It is equitable to the death of Harry’s parents as anything I have read in the books. it is almost a Saturday, because they are just living cornhusks, there, but then again, not. That glimpse shows a snapshot of why will try so hard, why he never gives up, why, he says Voldemort that he’ll join him when hell freezes over. I thought that line is any less important when spoken without the knowledge of that scene, I just think that scene makes it Even more importantH
I loved Richard Harris, & it was tragic when he died; I wasn't certain of Michael Gambon's performance, when he replaced him as Dumbledore- I thought him too vigorous & energetic. I much preferrrd Harris's understated, gentle headmaster.
One who'd I like to give an honorable mention would be Shirley Henderson as Moaning Myrtle. Of course, she was nearly 40 (if I'm correct) when she played the role in the Chamber of Secrets, yet she did show what a teenage girl could be like if you really got yourself the miserable type, and I've heard from several people that they were actually shocked to find out how old Shirley actually was. Although victim of bullying she was quite a bully herself, shown when she laughed at Hermione when she turned herself into an anthropomorphic cat and how she sexually intimidated Harry in the prefect's bathroom, and Shirley was credible in both personas of Myrtle and even credible to make me believe both the bully and the miserable one were actually the same person and her looks also turned out very good (it was only when I saw a picture of her as Myrtle without the effects that turned her into a ghost, that I actually began to wonder how old she really was). Now Michael Gambon blew it indeed for me on his first performances, most notably when he shouted at Harry when his name came out of the Goblet of Fire, however when he did chill out more, as we can see when he takes Harry to meet Slughorn and when he shows Harry his memories of child Voldemort, I can't say he nailed those, but I did see more the Dumbledore I'd like to see. Although Harris, did indeed nail Dumbledore completely. Speaking of Child Voldemort, then yes, Fiennes was truly outstanding as Voldemort, yet (and I forgot their real names) the actors playing the child Voldemort in the orphanage, even though he had little screen time, did do a good job. He really was a creepy kid. And the version of Voldemort asking Slughorn about how to make Horcruxes really gave me the creeps when he said "It will be our little secret". 100 points to Slytherin for that performance.
Since matching physical descriptions is part of the criteria, Ralph Fiennes has so much prosthetics/CGI, so he's an odd choice. Imelda Staunton is also odd, cuz she doesn't match the physical description *at all*
Hard list as everyone in Harry Potter is pretty well cast. Personally I prefer book luna. I think the actress does a good job but it's not exactly how I envisioned her. Shout out to Lucius, sprout, flitwick(1 and 2) And dishonourable mention. David Tennant as Barty Crouch Jr.
@JamesDavy2009 I think David Tennant is a good actor. Just not in Harry Potter. But I also hate everything about the party crouch plotline in the film, its really badly done so it's not really all on him
I love Michael Gambon as an actor but not as Dumbledore, Richard Harris was perfect but I think Stephen Fry would make a great Dumbledore, he's even got the crooked nose & his voice would be perfect.
Scenes like the one at 8:49 were so much more enjoyable when it sounded like Jo Rowling was actually criticizing certain ideologies and not spouting them herself.

I sat here thinking "If Imelda and Robbie have already been #3 and #2, WHO could be #1???" But it was only because I was so enjoying the video - #1 was perfect. Maybe the best top 10 ever!
David Thewlis embodied everything about Remus Lupin perfectly. He definitely looked the part.
Happy wednesday afternoon, Samantha, and what a great top this was. Take care and God bless you, and greetings from Colombia to you as well.
The Weasley twins are my favorite characters in the entire series!!! James and Oliver embody their characters perfectly!!!
Agreed Richard Harris was a MUCH better Dumbledore.
Great list for this top ten Harry Potter actors and everyone in this list have done a fantastic job of bringing these amazing characters to life and to those who we have lost they will forever be in our hearts and memories 👍❤️🪄🧙♂️
Imelda as Umbridge was FLAWLESS.
I agree. She was perfect.. I have to argue with her placement as number 2 on the list though. If you’re comparing to the book, she is nothing like Umbridge in a physical sense
Always Rickman
see what you did there
Very very great epic list I like it a lot very very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever 😊❤
Evanna Lynch was such the epitome of Luna that she even played Luna in Team Starkid's A Very Potter Senior Year!
Can you do a list of Star Wars actors?
I am currently rereading all the books and I 100% disagree with Alan Rickman's performance as Snape. Book Snape is so much worse than movie Snape. In the book he is way more vindictive and vile to Harry and his friends. Movie Snape was amazing but Rickman made him seem at least a little redeemable and somewhat good. But book Snape is an absolute monster who only changed because of his obsession with lily was stronger than his faith to voldy. There was no good in book Snape he only helped Harry because he had too.
Imelda Staunton did an absolutely fantastic job as Umbridge, I don't think I have ever had the same level of anger and hate for a movie character
I really hope that hbo max will pick the right actors for the Harry Potter tv show, even if they'll never be as iconic as the original cast
I think the actor who portrayed Nathan from Misfits would be PERFECT as Peeves, and Rudy from Misfits, his actor would’ve been much better as McLaggen.
Had they been willing to give a role to an American, nobody would have been a better Peeves than Robin Williams.
@@54raynor can’t argue with that, and he’d definitely nail the accent part
I completely agree with number 1
lockhart was supposed to be in order of the phoenix that would've helped also betcha didn't know Robin Williams was considered for hagrid
So many are just perfect!!!
How dare you not mention David Thewlis as Remus! 😭
RIP to most actors in the books to movie characters
I think they were all perfect and brilliant in every way 🪄
When I was younger I had the biggest crush on Serverus Snape.
As others said, everyone was perfectly cast. I'm glad that Alan Rickman got number one since Snape is one of the most complex characters not just in literature but films. Rickman was amazing.
Imagine if Hermione Granger was casted by Kristen Stewart....
Oh hell no
BLEAGH!!!
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I don't think Kristen Stewart is a casting director, which is how your sentence reads. Imagine if Kristen Stewart were cast as Hermione Granger.
@@cethomas324 I repeat oh hell no
I just wish Dumbledore had actually said that one line the way the book said he was supposed to, Richard would have. A fun fact: I have a friend named Richard Harris and he’s also a big Harry Potter fan 😅
Great list. Here is mine (characters not actors but cgi characters are excluded, otherwise Dobby would deserve at least an honourable mention):
Honourable mentions:
Lucius Malfoy
Dudley Dursley
Vernon Dursley
Fred & George Weasley
Peter Pettigrew
Sirius Black
Barty Crouch Junior
Mad Eye Moody
Kingsley Shacklebolt
10: Molly Weasley
9: Remus Lupin
8: Draco Malfoy
7: Luna Lovegood
6: Hagrid
5: Voldemort
4: Umbridge
3: Mc Gonagall
2: Bellatrix
1: Severus Snape
I just don’t buy the tragic fate of Harry from Daniel Radcliffs play, however I absolutely buy Mollys will of steel, the way she dominates her environment and her warm motherly instinct. I also buy Lupins fate as an outcast. For the rest of the cast I agree with you and the different positions are just matters of personal taste
Draco: u don’t want to be making friends with the wrong sort
Me:Don’t u mean with the Ron sort?
I think all the adult characters were SPOT on with the choice of actors. Especially Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham-Carter, Gary Oldman, Richard Harris' Dumbledore!
In terms of looks, Bonnie Write is good for Ginny
I'm a little more on board with Daniel Radcliffe appearing on the list since he is #10.
Ooh the absolute shade on Gambon... And twice too. If the actor hadn't of passed away recently I'd be laughing
Alan Rickman as #1 on this list is no surprise. He was Severus Snape, no one can ever do that role justice in the upcoming TV series.
Imelda Staunton is also odd, cuz she doesn't match the physical description *at all*
Spot on!
All perfect ❤
Hard list as everyone in Harry Potter is pretty well cast. Personally I prefer book luna. I think the actress does a good job but it's not exactly how I envisioned her.
Shout out to Lucius, sprout, flitwick(1 and 2)
And dishonourable mention. David Tennant as Barty Crouch Jr.
That was before Tennant became The 10th Doctor.
@JamesDavy2009 I think David Tennant is a good actor. Just not in Harry Potter.
But I also hate everything about the party crouch plotline in the film, its really badly done so it's not really all on him
I feel Michael Gambon is unfairly judged from a poorly written scene
I really hate Dolores Umbridge the most out of all HP villains!!!! Imelda Staunton is brilliant!!!
Christian Coulson as 16 yr old Tom Riddle in Chamber of Secrets
I liked Gambon as Dumbledore
I think everyone was perfectly cast.
I'm surprised Emma Watson's not on here. But I completely agree Alan Rickman stole every scene he was in and then some.
Ginny was the worst cast. Girl has no personality from start to finish. Book Ginny we didn’t get to see.
she was cute in first movie.. but something about the actress bothered me after... could be the way she acted or how they directed her
I love Michael Gambon as an actor but not as Dumbledore, Richard Harris was perfect but I think Stephen Fry would make a great Dumbledore, he's even got the crooked nose & his voice would be perfect.
The twins became much easier to tell apart later on.
George is missing an ear, and Fred is dead.
Scenes like the one at 8:49 were so much more enjoyable when it sounded like Jo Rowling was actually criticizing certain ideologies and not spouting them herself.
