One hour ago woodturning was something I hadn't thought about since wood shop classes in school as a kid. Now I have been watching woodturning videos on UA-cam for an hour straight! It's sooo nice and soothing too look at you work :)
WOW! Just when I thought you couldn't get any better. Thanks for keeping it real. New shop is there, can't wait to see the next level. I was a big fan of the old dark corner, this is amazing!
I agree. For the sake of teaching I find your videos invaluable, and I love that you DO include mistakes -- how they happen and how to avoid them. When I started turning I would always tell myself "ABC -- Anchor, Bevel, Cut," but I still mess it up now and then and end up scaring the crap out of myself. Skew catches are the best for adrenaline rushes. ;)
Thank you Steve, I don't think you can go wrong with these as gifts.
Take care,
Carl
Hi Carl. Nice project as always. When we turn our 10 inch mills we use a 1 1/2 inch hole through the body. This allows a nice sized tenon to line things up. Also we drill a small 1/4 inch hole in the top behind the 15/16th inch hole so that the we have a little fudge factor when we cut the shaft. Thanks BTW for stopping by my facebook page the other day. Have a great weekend.
Great idea Leonard, I think that would look great and really stand out.
Your work is awesome!! Please keep posting videos, I have learned alot from watching them.
Thank you, I did a little bit in school too and picked it back up in my late 20s.
Thank you Colin, That sounds like a fun field trip.
Thank you Sally, I'm glad your enjoying them.
Nice project Carl. I've made several pepper mills as gifts and they're always a big hit.
Great video. I absolutely love bog oak, and the finished product looked amazing. Incredible work as usual.
Thanks for another great project video.
Alan Stratton
Beautiful Carl, that bog oak is gorgeous wood.
Take care
Mike
Wow....you are amazing. Keep making these videos. They are very inspirational.
Thank you Bob, It happens to all of us.
Thank you Desmond, The wood is Oak, It's been buried in peat bogs and preserved.
Take care,
Thank you, The shop is coming together.
Nice work Carl, and great that you show your mistakes too. Makes us lesser mortals feel a bit better when we get a catch / dig in (lol). That Bog Oak looked a lot like Purple Heart when it was finished. Keep 'em coming.
Yes it turned very nice. I'm not a big fan of turning Oak but the color in this piece is great.
Thank you, It's a nice fun project.
Thank you Kevin, Yes it happens to all of us.
wow. just started woodturning and loving your videos, very helpfull thank you.
sally
Thank you Rich,
Nice to think that apiece of wood lying around for 6,000 years or so finally came in useful. Looks well.
Hi Donald, You can use the shavings as compost. They do make a Bowl Saver you can make a few bowls out of one piece of wood.
Thank you Alan,
Thank you Lewis,
Thank you Darryl,
Thank you Matthew, Ha Ha, Oooo Yes,
Great project carl!
Thank you Mike, Yes I think so too.
Take care,
Carl
Thank you,
Very nice Carl!! Sorry but I love it when you make mistakes, makes me feel sooo much better.... ha, ha!!! Thanks for doing the videos, love them.....
carl cool pepper mill
all have to try one thanks
Thank you John, sounds like you've been busy :)
very nice woood.. great work!
Hi Jack, I don't think I used a different tool rest in the video. That's great you could help out your friend.
Take care,
Little bit of troubles while turning gives a more satisfied end result :-) Nice peppermill!
Thank you Christian,
Bog-wood, is wood from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. It can be any species of wood. It's not the same as Black Oak
Thank you, I think so too.
Thank you carl jacobson
chik omar Thanks
Thank you, I'll do that next time. I though maybe I used the wrong bit.
It did have much of a smell. I'm not a fan of Oak but this piece has some great color. It turned nice for not being a very hard wood. I take a lot of alternate approaches lol. I just want everyone to know it happens to all of us. You have a piece of wood spinning around at 2000 rpm and start poking at it with a piece of steel things are going to happen.......:)
Thank you, Someone else yes that too. I noted that too a small 1/4" hole would work great.
Take care,
Looks nice Carl ,I will have to look for a piece of oak in the local bog here
Carl is human. He ha skew catches too. Lol. Thanks for your great videos Carl.
Thank you, I don't know LOL but it wasn't right I got a new one today. It is to short to sharpen.
great work!
as always :)
It's Paste wax and Mineral oil. I have a video on how to mix it on my new channel. The link is in the description.
I know if that would have happened on the bottom part the video would have been called Maple PepperMill......LOL
I really wish you would make some more sharpening vids. That's one of the hardest things to do in this craft.
Hi Scott, for something like this between 1200 to 1800 rpm.
Take care,
Carl
I am always intimidated with the hole drilling of a pepper mill. You made it look much easier.
The dust from the drilling looks like coal dust. I like the color.
I noticed two different tool rest. How do you decide which to use?
I have practiced w/skews quite a bit. A friend who has no real exp.asked me to sharpen his tools, they came with the lathe. I looked at the skew and he said "that thing - it's all over the place." I did some serviceable work with it. He was amazed. LOL
I love your hair
That looks nice Carl, I like that wood, I would like to see the tree that sort of wood comes from. Desmond.
I'm a huge fan of dark wood, and the grain pattern on this is awesome! What did it smell like when you turned it, and was it hard/dense? And how did it turn? Seemed a bit "powdery" ... and for your catch, remember ABC! ;) By the way, wood-turners never do "something wrong," we just take an alternate approach to make it look the way we want it to! No one would have known if you hadn't said anything! lol
I got most of mine at Woodcraft
Hi Greg, yes maybe a little fast on the speed. I fixed the link to chefwarekits
Hello Carl,
I somehow missed this video when you first put it up.
I found it today as I'm about to try and make my first pepper grinder so I wanted to get some top tips before I begin and found this upload.
You've given me a lot more confidence so we'll see what today brings.
You did a really superb job with that ancient wood.
I have a little stock of bog oak buts it's hard to get a large enough piece without defects to make even a pepper mill.
I have lots which will make pen blanks and I have even spotted a small burr among it which I might get two pens out of and they should be special if I don't foul up.
Best wishes and many thanks.
Alan.
Thank you Alan,
I would like to see a picture of the pepper mill. I hope everything worked out.
Take care my friend,
Carl

Nice looking peppermill. I was wondering if a piece or two of copper wire inlayed into the wood would look nice with the dark background.
I did one on my new channel.
I've had the idea in my mind for awhile and haven't tried it yet.
The bog oak look good .Live beside the bog not a good for a mobility scooter I got nice dry white thorn could be a good project Love your videos
charlie Mooney Thank you Charlie
Hi Chris, are you talking about the chisels?
Carl Jacobson uu
Thank you, No I just think he didn't want to be online anymore.
Carl, as i am learning to use my lathe, i realize how much wood is removed to make things. Is there a way to utilize most of what is used on the lather...wood shavings etc?
Carl when you sand the wood, what is on the sand paper, is it finishing wax?
Carl,
Are you not spinning that blank alittle fast for your drilling operation? Also, is there a different link for peppermillkits that works. I'm not having any luck.
Oh, and by the way, very nice work! What grind did you put on your spindle gouge when you were messing around with it?
I don't know :(
Carl, how fast are you turning on average with this particular piece?
Thanks, Scott
Really nice looking pepper pot
How tight should you wind the tail stock into the work piece, is it to the point where the work piece is still rotating freely and just before the tightness will impede rotation?
thanks
+icespeckledhens Thank you! I'm using a live center, so it just needs to be snug.
Some how I missed the solution you add to you sandpaper. Almost there .. Tks
+robert helveston I use Howard beeswax, and orange oil.
Where do you get you spinning tools Carl
sweet knife... where can i get one?
I love the dark color of that bog oak! It looks a lot like African Blackwood. Great turn Carl! Whats your email address? I'd like to show ya some of my work.
Great Video, sorry about your change of life.
Hello Carl. Very nice work.
Tell my please what best finishing is for BOG OAK ? iI make Jaguar key chain.
thanks Andrew
Thank you Andrew! I like to use a Beeswax finish :)
Carl,
At what speed do you run on the lathe when drilling with forstner bits?
I usually run at about 500 RPMs
