One hour ago woodturning was something I hadn't thought about since wood shop classes in school as a kid. Now I have been watching woodturning videos on UA-cam for an hour straight! It's sooo nice and soothing too look at you work :)

WOW! Just when I thought you couldn't get any better. Thanks for keeping it real. New shop is there, can't wait to see the next level. I was a big fan of the old dark corner, this is amazing!

I agree. For the sake of teaching I find your videos invaluable, and I love that you DO include mistakes -- how they happen and how to avoid them. When I started turning I would always tell myself "ABC -- Anchor, Bevel, Cut," but I still mess it up now and then and end up scaring the crap out of myself. Skew catches are the best for adrenaline rushes. ;)

Hi Carl. Nice project as always. When we turn our 10 inch mills we use a 1 1/2 inch hole through the body. This allows a nice sized tenon to line things up. Also we drill a small 1/4 inch hole in the top behind the 15/16th inch hole so that the we have a little fudge factor when we cut the shaft. Thanks BTW for stopping by my facebook page the other day. Have a great weekend.

Bog-wood, is wood from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. It can be any species of wood. It's not the same as Black Oak

It did have much of a smell. I'm not a fan of Oak but this piece has some great color. It turned nice for not being a very hard wood. I take a lot of alternate approaches lol. I just want everyone to know it happens to all of us. You have a piece of wood spinning around at 2000 rpm and start poking at it with a piece of steel things are going to happen.......:)

  • @CarlJacobson

I am always intimidated with the hole drilling of a pepper mill. You made it look much easier.
The dust from the drilling looks like coal dust. I like the color.
I noticed two different tool rest. How do you decide which to use?
I have practiced w/skews quite a bit. A friend who has no real exp.asked me to sharpen his tools, they came with the lathe. I looked at the skew and he said "that thing - it's all over the place." I did some serviceable work with it. He was amazed. LOL

I'm a huge fan of dark wood, and the grain pattern on this is awesome! What did it smell like when you turned it, and was it hard/dense? And how did it turn? Seemed a bit "powdery" ... and for your catch, remember ABC! ;) By the way, wood-turners never do "something wrong," we just take an alternate approach to make it look the way we want it to! No one would have known if you hadn't said anything! lol

    Hello Carl,
I somehow missed this video when you first put it up.
I found it today as I'm about to try and make my first pepper grinder so I wanted to get some top tips before I begin and found this upload.
You've given me a lot more confidence so we'll see what today brings.
You did a really superb job with that ancient wood.
I have a little stock of bog oak buts it's hard to get a large enough piece without defects to make even a pepper mill.
I have lots which will make pen blanks and I have even spotted a small burr among it which I might get two pens out of and they should be special if I don't foul up.
    Best wishes and many thanks.
    Alan.
