  • This is a bit of a longer tutorial, but this alembic workflow for getting models to and from clo3d has saved me a ton of frustration as opposed to other FBX workflows.
    Let me know how I can explain things better though. This stuff gets confusing, but once you understand it, there's a lot of fun things you can do!

    Hey Guys, anyone who wants to fix the levitation issue try adding opposite pressure to the under layer, so if you want a total of 50 pressure use 25 as top layer pressure and -25 as bottom layer pressure

    • @jordancolleyy
      @jordancolleyy 2 роки тому +5

      Hey I had the same issue, after searching I found that when exporting your Alembic model, you need to deselect subdivision in the export menu, this will allow it to be imported in Clo3d

    Hey, I appreciate the pretty comprehensive tutorial. Can I get your advice, though. I am an apparel designer and am mostly working in CLO 3D, a little Daz, mixamo. I know CLO well, but I want to begin learning 3D more generally to get more dynamic, custom animations for apparel presentation. Its clear that its very necessary to use multiple programs to supplement each other for best results. Would you suggest I look for a course or program that specializes in that or just set my own curriculum and learn on my own?

    • @bengillespie8967
      @bengillespie8967  2 роки тому

      Hey! I think that depends on your learning style, but if it were me I'd set up my own curriculum. I get pretty bored easily, so I find it hard to learn through "academic" style courses that go through all the buttons and what they do, and learn best through project based tutorials and trying things out on my own. In undergrad, I had a lot of fun setting up my own curriculum for independent studies with tutorials on UA-cam, some books and some paid courses. I just set up a spreadsheet with learning objectives, and a big list of tutorials to watch and had a project to do every other week or so that would try to combine some of the techniques in the tutorials to create something different. I have enjoyed the redshift course on Grey Scale Gorilla plus (although it's not the most exciting thing, it's packed with useful tidbits), and all their plugins and assets are really useful as well. I've heard great things about schoolofmotion.com, but I haven't purchased any of their courses because I'm kind of afraid I'd get bored and not finish them. I think you probably have the best idea of what you want your end products to look like, so if you can pick apart the techniques needed to get there you'd be in a great place. I've been planning on putting out my own curriculum/mini course series, but with the way things have been going with client work I wouldn't wait up :/

      @@bengillespie8967 Yeah, I enrolled in a CLO certificate program for some type of "official" clout, but feel it was a total waste of money and time.
      I do like a self-guided track and have been teaching university-level courses for 6 years now. I feel like I'm as good as any teacher to deliver the material, but the thing I wonder about it which material. Maybe if I look for a personal tutor for a couple sessions to point me in the right direction, start it off correctly. But who knows, everything is on UA-cam.
      May I ask you how you got into 3D freelancing? (I'm assuming freelance). Did you go to school for 3D modeling or animation or anything, then just wiggle into the scene until word-of-mouth kept you afloat?
      That would be ideal, doing freelance 3D apparel design, but its hard to crack into it. I know I can't stay in this teaching sitch much longer. Soul sucking.
      Thanks for all your help!! I appreciate it :)

      @@vanhertenouterwear No problem! Yeah I'm a fulltime freelancer with about 70% 3D and 30% After Effects now, and I've slowly been taking on more 3D clients and taking on less After Effects projects. I've only been freelance for about a year now. I used to work as an editor at a local production company, but I wanted more time to learn 3D stuff so I stepped away last July and started taking on new clients as a freelancer. Before that I went to school for "Technology, Arts and Media" but most of the skills I actually use are from UA-cam.
      I think most of my clients are from word of mouth, but I do feel like I hit an inflection point recently where I have more inquiries than hours in the day, so that is encouraging.
      I really don't even have a reel or website right now so I just try to keep my current clients as happy as I can and that generally works out for me. I'm not really stellar with outbound lead generation, so I love having clients with clients so I just have to focus on making the videos. It's probably not the most "ideal" freelancer setup... it would be nice to have a niche and aesthetic to hone in on and not bounce between polar opposite creative direction so often, but it works out well for me at the moment:)

    Hey man, thanks for the video ! Just a quick question, when i put the walk cycle again into the timeline, the character go back at the middle of the scene. It should keep moving forward and further... Do you have any idea how to fix it ? Thanks

    • @bengillespie8967
      @bengillespie8967  2 роки тому

      Hey! Yeah no problem. For Clo3D walk cycles, I usually check the “in place” box on mixamo so the little dude animates on the origin, then do the simulations, then keyframe his position to move with the exported alembic files after the simulations are done. I just do it that way so I can loop the animations. If you need the character to be walking forward the whole time, you can manipulate the key frames in the F-curve window before you create the motion clip (select everything, move to the last frame and paste everything) and just move the Hip Z position down so the character continues walking forward, rinse and repeat for however long you need your thing to walk, then create the motion clip. Motion clips are relatively destructive in the workflow though so you might need to re-import your .fbxs and duplicate the models before you create motion clips. Hope that helps!

    When I merge object t pose and walk cycle my model turns into black color!!??Any tips or suggestion

    • @bengillespie8967
      @bengillespie8967  2 роки тому +1

      Hmmm the materials likely aren’t linking. Be sure when you download the walk cycle and t pose from mixamo you include the skins (select “with skin” on the download settings) and don’t reassign included takes on the merge objects command. If you download the .fbx files with the skins, the materials should show up in your material browser when you merge objects and if they’re not applied already you can just drag and drop them onto your model. Hope that helps!

    • @bengillespie8967
      @bengillespie8967  2 роки тому +1

      Ohh yeah I haven’t found a good workflow for loops to make the alembics match up. I know how to do it in Houdini with point deformers, but that takes too long for most of what I want to do. I’ll usually simulate a few extra loops so the clothes can kind of catch a rhythm then render a few extra frames and apply a quick cross fade and pixel motion blur in After Effects and that smooths things out a bit

    • @bengillespie8967
      @bengillespie8967  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure how my materials stayed honestly because sometimes they don't. I sometimes have to go into the material browser, and open up the materials then re-link the diffuse, normal, and reflection maps in Octane's node editor. Those images should be in a "tex" folder by your fbx file. Then once they're re-linked, you can just drag and drop the materials onto your model.
