She is the closest to a stage musical performer. Usually, the studio version of Ado's songs are much more 'refined' and 'contained' while her live versions are way more intense, emotional and overall 'unhinged'.

For context this is like song 23 in a 2 hour concert during the encore. This is her first large concert ever and only the second concert she's ever been in at that point. She's a machine 22 to 26 songs a concert with very minimal breaks between songs.

@DavidBraileyLive her stage presence has improved ten fold since then. She literally sold out the stadium they hosted the tokyo Olympics this year. Her world tour schedule upcoming is monstrous. 34 concerts in 33 locations. She never disappoints live you should check out her cover of unravel next. There are both studio and live versions.

She's not trying to sell her look. She's trying to sell her singing, and that's all we could ever want from her. Definitely check out Unravel and Aishite, Aishite, Aishite live from her too. Unravel live is probably my favourite performance by a singer, you can tell she can't quite hit the incredible delicacy and subtle distortion of her studio cover of it, so she just leans into exactly what her voice is doing at the time, rather than trying to mimic what she did in a studio, and it just fits the song, and the moment so intensely.

She usually keeps a low profile at concerts, doesn't want to be recognized on the street. Her live performances are usually much more emotional than the studio recording. I highly recommend the live version of "Show" and definitely her live performance - a cover of the song "Unravell", a cult metal song from the anime Tokyo Ghoul. She also writes her own songs, recently released her song "Shoka", plays the guitar.

You touched on a very good point of how superficial the music business is today. It's even worse in Japan than in the US or EU. Basically nobody cares if Idols can sing, as long as they're cute, pretty and don't have a problem jumping around on stage in a mini skirt. The producers/agencies of Idol groups sell more CDs and make more money at so-called "handshake events" than in actual record stores, because a ticket to get a handshake or photo often comes with the bought CDs at the concert/event. That's why a lot of those groups that were the biggest thing in Japan for a long time, like AKB48 or Nogizaka46, took a real hit from 2020 to 2022 when nobody could go to any events with COVID restrictions in place. It really showed that a lot of "Idol otakus" (the hardcore fans) only bought CDs so they could get the extra benefits, not because they actually liked the music. I think this "cute/pretty over talent" policy is also a big reason why so many artists in Japan choose to stay anonymous, like Ado, and still have a lot of success. If you want another example of a super talented duo that's anonymous and successful for almost 10 years now, try Yorushika (ヨルシカ) and their song "Tada Kimi ni Hare" (official translation "Just a Sunny Day for You") or their song "Haru" (晴る, which means something like "clear sunny skies", there's no real translation). There're also a lot of self-made bands, like Hitsujibungaku for example (if you want, try their First Take live of "more than words", the vocalist who also writes all the songs is super talented) with a lot more success nowadays, maybe because the idol groups are suffering and people rather listen to music than watch cute girls who can't sing dance around on a stage.
Edit: To clarify, that isn't the reason why Ado chooses to be anonymous. In her case it's because she's a big introvert and doesn't really like herself much, to put it mildly. On her second to last new song "Shoka" (the first song she completely wrote herself, which is an absolute banger), she wrote in the description 大嫌いな夏と、大嫌いな自分の歌です, which you can translate as "'It's a song about summer, which I hate, and myself, which I hate".

I'll also add that K-pop is all built on idols, where the main thing is appearance, and you can't make a career there at all if you're not handsome

There were many background issues at that time that were different from now.
First of all, Ado was still a student when she debuted, and she was not sure how far she could go as a singer (although she became famous as soon as she debuted😂), so she chose not to show her face for the sake of safety (a recent example is "tuki.", who was only 15 years old when she debuted last year, and she still hasn't shown her face ).
In addition, before she released her first self-composed songs, she called herself just a "utaite", so she didn't show her face to maintain tradition.
After she became an adult, she was interviewed by a program and asked if she wanted to show her face. She said that she seemed to have missed that opportunity, so she should just keep it like this (maybe she is really introverted, after all, she would scream in shame just by seeing her own shadow🤣).

japanese industry, divides in TWO AREAS
IDOLS and Singers and Bands, and BOTH HAS your space and public, i can respect that.

Proper compression uses the false vocal cords above the true vocal cords, she would have destroyed her voice years ago if she didn't use proper screaming technique. The actual vocal cords are singing a clean note, the flapping happens in the false vocal cords due to body tension. Hard to notice live and only the squeek features in this song, but you can also use this technique to sigh into the compression and release with a squeek to create a multi-tiered scream. This also allows you to rapidly jump back to a modal note as you don't overcommit to the scream.
Best way to train it is to sing a clean note and then lift a heavy table. Still a very physically tiring way to sing due to the body tension, but it's how Death/Black Metal vocalists have careers lasting decades instead of months.
Some examples from her that include a lot of it:

I recommend reacting to her live cover of Unravel next, if you don't know the song it's from an anime called Tokyo Ghoul, and it's originally sang by an artist named TK. The song portrays the feelings of someone slowly becoming a monster (In the literal sense, not metaphorically, although it honestly can be used in that way as well), and begging desperately for the people they know to remember them not for what they become, but for who they were, as well as just the pain of becoming something unrecognizable from the thing you used to be. Ado does a great job protraying the emotions live, here's the link if you're interested in reacting to it: ua-cam.com/video/khplMpm4ctc/v-deo.html Of course, I also recommend reacting to the live version of Show, the other song you reacted to, but that's up to you. :D
