I had the privilege to have Dave as my instructor at K9 School for 6 months in 2017. He is a true master at what he does. Without his guidance I would not be where I am today. I am now running my non profit called Always A Warrior Foundation. We rescue, train and donate Service Dogs to combat wounded veterans and first responders at no charge to them. Thank you Dave!
My name is Frank from Nairobi Kenya I've been watching your videos time to time and I really appreciate what you are doing. Your videos have really opened my eyes when it comes to dog training I learned a lot from them. I usually watch them repeatedly and I say your training is so simple to understand. Through you I came do training Is not that hard
Thank you so much for this Nate. This is so great, lots of great questions. I love how despite your experience you ask a lot of great questions someone without that experience might have. I also really love how this is fluent, not scripted and not pre-filmed and put together to make it look like it's live, and that you don't have the ego of some trainers that don't want people to know that they don't know something, and will just answer questions themselves, also they want to retain as many clients as possible for maximum profit and therefore don't refer their clients who can better help them with what they're seeking with their dog, and I believe that, just like medical professionals and other industries out there who refer their clients and patients, with people that are in whichever industry they are in for the right reasons, they will do everything they can to help their clients reach their goals, even though it may mean you lose the income of that one client when you refer them to another trainer, which in my opinion, makes a good dog trainer a great trainer for having put their clients first 🐾❤️🐾
Thanks, I appreciate that and I couldn't agree more. :)
Another great interview. Wish we had access to schools like these in Canada. Love the simplicity. 'Most behavioral issues can be managed with 1) leash walking 2) climb/place 3) come when called.
This is true. Bottom line: Dont be lazy. Handle your dog!
Thanks! Yes, Dave is incredible. One of the best instructors I've had the chance to work with. :)
What hold you back?, you are not the first one from an other country who went to school.
You will regret if you don’t try !!
I started working at Kennelwood in January. I wanted to be a dog trainer but didn’t know where to go. Hearing how awesome dan is and the school. I plan on going to Kennelwood academy very soon.
Thank you for this video
Thank you so much for the comments on experience by seeing many dogs. First, needing to imitate the experienced instructor, and second, seeing each dog as an individual with a unique personality.
BUT most likely anyone who wants to be a professional trainer has some kind of experience training their own pets. Not really blank slates.
Here I am thinking I’m all that for training my 12 lb little dude myself and not hiring a pro this time 🤣 You guys are the real deal! Thank you for sharing your expertise, you all gave me the the tools to add to the foundation I had with the experiences of having had professionally trained dogs and knowing there is a real significant difference than merely bringing your family dog to petsmart for those group obedience classes 😂 My previous big dogs were phenomenal family dogs, that’s down to their training. Now, with the help and guidance of people like you and Joel Beckman, Zac George, my little dude is doing great. It’s obviously going slower than the 2 week board & train my other dogs got, but I’m so so proud of him ♥️🐾
Great interview, as always.
Great intervew
Awesome video as always.
Nate! Such great content, thank you so much.

Hey Nate! Great segment! I ask this question about becoming a trainer a while ago and I'm really glad you did this one. Creger, my German shepherd just turned a year old and your videos have helped me and him so much and I appreciate you more then you know.. thanks!
Thanks great video
That's awesome about not having a dog too. Our local dog obedience club is 50 years in existance and I actually became a member when I was a teenager before even owning a dog. Mom was not an animal person. Have come full circle, am back in the area, and am now an obedience instructor.
Good working Boss 👌👌👌
Great video 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Hey Nate! What do you usually do with a puppies crooked sit and down? Do you fix it right away and not reward when its crooked? Or do you wait till he’s older to fix it?
First, you want to make sure that the dog doesn't have any hip issues. If everything is fine, then you can use a shaping box or a painters bench to fix the crooked sit. You can see an example of the shaping box here: ua-cam.com/video/Xb8iiI2Q7Xk/v-deo.html
The painters bench is is a narrow platform, so it helps prevent the dog from shifting their hips when learning the sit command. :)
@@NateSchoemer i mean on the first exam he didnt display any issues. And he can sit just fine sometimes, he’s just lazy and doesnt think about it i think. I’ll just try to fix it as early as possible with a box
Sounds good. :)
@@NateSchoemer thanks by the way!:) everything id going phenomenaly with my doggie, at 12 weeks he semi-knows about 5 or 6 commands, all with ur help! I highly appreciate it
Hey Nate! What school would you recommend in Southern California? I really would love to go to TRS or Kennelwood but I can’t be gone from home for that long.
What dog treats do you recommend?? thanks!

Hey Nate! so ive been aprenticing under a small time dog trainer who used to be a deputy and k9 handler and he reccomended against training service dogs to also do protection and to be specific i dont mean a person hits handler and dog bites i mean dog gets command and runs after target (In bite suit) but does not do anything like guard house and act agressive. is that ok? i really want to participate in the bite sports as dog is VERY strong and smart so could it be done i have worked quite a bit with dogs and am currently tabacco sent training.
Hey Nate, hope all is well. haven't seen any uploads in a few weeks.
is there any distanced learning program. As i am from Pakistan and would like to train my self. Please reply
Hi Nate. Sorry, it's not relevant to this video but I've been watching your other vids and reading your book and I stumbled across the term "non-reinforcement marker".
1. What word do you use for this?
2. Could you link to an explanation (video perhaps)?
I'm fascinated by the concept of conditioning with markers, but this one was new to me (or maybe I'm just not recognizing it).
Also, thanks for such outstanding information!
Hello I haven't read his book but I've heard of other trainers using those. I've heard it as "yes""good" or just a noise, it is basically a noise or word that you don't use as a reward (good boy, good job, good dog) to tell them that their jobs aren't done yet.
Nate, will you be checking in on us in your community?
Of course! :)
Cool 😎💯
I wish you had a school for dog trainers
Watching this interview Mr. Schoemer - I needed to mention & ask - my wife & I just brought home a Malamute/German shepherd mix puppy. Unfortunately, she was 6 weeks old - instead of the recommended 8 weeks. She's now going into 8th week now, but suffers from biting, coprophagia (we believe that this is a learned behavior from watching her mother) & (for now) extreme separation anxiety - we're working with our puppy - do You have any suggestions?
corprophagia - leash walk and stop it. But...you can try a tinyvpiece of pinapple on the food to make poo taste less good. Probiotics for dogs may also help because sometimes they need something.
Biting...pinch lips on teeth and say no, offer teething toys, and leash control. Teach things you DO want them to do to occupy the brain instead of biting.
Thank You awesome advise - we will try this ...
Nate, I’m disabled in an electric wheelchair. My service dog Mandy just passed away last week. I applied for dog training with Penn Foster, but after I paid the full tuition, I was dropped. Can you please help?
Would you recommend going to more than 1 school since I want to be a professional dog trainer?
Thats if someone has the funds to do so
Why don't you do an R.O.I. on all of these schools? Who is making back the huge amount of money spent to attend; easily 40k for this school, for example. You can compare Tom Rose, Kennelwood, Michael ellis Ivan Balabanov, Bart Bellon, Tar heel (a bunch of gun dog schools like Ronnie Smith) even Karen Pryor's schools, etc.
Go to school? I can't afford it and my local shelters aren't accepting applications from volunteers.
Also thought about contacting a local rescue group to see if you can foster, get the behaviors wanted by most owners, and help to re-home the dog. Most rescue groups take care of everything - just ask.
@@robinrutherfordcost4748 I have two 10 month old pups I'm training. I need to finish that training before I can foster.
Yes, fostering or helping rescues is also a great way to learn.
I agree, it'll help to get really good with your dogs obedience before moving on to foster dogs. :)
Beware any teacher who recommends that you avoid reading/learning before they get their hands on you. 🧐
