I’ve been a bather for 4 years now. I swore I didn’t want to be a groomer. It wasn’t until I got my puppy this year who needs monthly grooming. I began doing it on my own and it was then I truly found my passion for grooming. I was lucky to learn from a good friend and amazing groomer who taught me what she could. I will be going to grooming school this fall and I am SOOO excited. Best part is I work at a salon inside a dog daycare currently and am able to take over as a groomer when I am ready. Anyways I love and appreciate your videos. Very informative and helpful!!
So for petsmart is a 2 year (promissory note) not a legal contract. It's 30 days of (academy) then you go back to your home store (the store that hired you and you live by) and train under the salon leader mainly or ask a groomer your close to that's already seasoned or has year of experience to train under them aka be their apprentice. So technically it's school + apprenticeship. I recommend when doing it this to STAY with petsmart for the 2 years if possible. You'll learn pet grooming 100% and how to start your own business after that or get hired at a private shop as well. Also recommend taking pictures of good grooms you do to put in a PORTFOLIO. Portfolios are needed to get hired anywhere else as an already trainer certified and established professional petstylist. This industry is not regulated but further training makes you stand out amongst the backyard groomers who not only usually do a poor job but they also hurt, cut, and even somtimes kill dog by accident. Petsmart and petco are your easiest and cheapest ways to get training you need and certifications.
i'm only young but i have really bad anxiety and i find it hard to be around many people. i've always been good with animals and have always loved animals so i've always thought i would be better to have a job that includes animals. pet grooming has always been a big option for me and i've decided to really look into pet grooming. thank you for the video!
I used to work at petsmart end goal being a pet groomer and I had to start out being a bather, then would have to get assessed by the person who sets up the monthly school to learn.. It was a great experience, they pay for hotel, food, and the grooming school itself for the month, however they did expect a contract to be signed to work for them. I don't remember the length of time however. I had a rough experience though with them month after month telling me I was going soon and then not, and then the lady who was supposed to evaluate me quitting and them not knowing who was going to replace them. So this option needs patience and time!
I applied for there bather/groomer trainee position at PetSmart and they called me back and said that they actually weren’t looking to fill that position (even though they leave it up on their website) but that they would love for me to work as a store employee.🤦🏻♀️ They said that once there is a open spot there I could be moved to that instead.
Currently work at petsmart and applied for the grooming position I was told I’d have to start off as a bather which was fine by me but the manager also said I’d have to be cross trained in each department before going to grooming. I’ve been there for almost 2 months and just now finished my splash book and the boss of the grooming is out on vacation until the 18th of this month and hopefully I’ll be able to start but I am annoyed by the fact that like you too I’m getting pushed back and told this this and that. In reality they just needed cashiers but that isn’t what I applied for and have voiced this again and I am still stuck on register. I want to work with dogs as I was a dog walker before this and still do it on the side, I’ve gotten shit hours and yeah anyways hopefully I will soon be in the salon if not I’ll apply for an actual groomers so no cross training hopefully.
I’m 2 months in as a bather at Petsmart, the salon manager was quitting right as I was hired and I can’t go to their grooming academy unless my location has a salon manager. They were very vague on the manger being gone and didn’t confirm she wouldn’t be back until a few weeks after I started, the whole time talking up how it won’t be long before I can go to academy lol They also didn’t tell me that my location is VERY understaffed even before losing the manager, 1 of the 2 stylist just left to go mobile 2 weeks ago. Now I’m finding out that employees from other locations refuse to even cover shifts at my location because the management is so bad 🤦🏼♀️ We finally got someone from another location considering to be our manager, she covered a couple days this last week and I’m honestly worried she’ll change her mind and stay at her other location…all her coworkers are warning her not to take the position 😭 I freaking love this job, but the work environment is horrendous! Luckily I’ve been told the non-compete contract is not required, they can’t force me to sign it(there’s actually a legal battle going on that may force them to get rid of it). So I’m just doing my best to power through until I can get through their academy and maybe get a little experience grooming before I jump ship somewhere else.
I love your content and your presence. You are so honest and transparent. A great role model in your industry. Thank you for these great videos. They are sooooo helpful.
hi! i’ve been going to a tech school in PA studying cosmetology. i’m now a senior and i’m eligible to go out on co-op and have a major interest with grooming. i have experience with animals, however i am 17. my school does offer grooming as a co-op option and does fall under cosmetology, so i’m not exactly sure if they would accept an underaged student for an apprenticeship, as there are so many risks that come with working with animals. i’ve been binging your videos for a while and they’re all super helpful and informative! 💕
Thank you so much for making these videos! It’s been very helpful for me because I’m currently doing an online course for dog training (Animal Behaviour College. They offer externships at the end of the online course and expect you to do volunteer work as well. And they are government recognized in the States and Canada which is awesome cause I live in Ontario!) later I’m gonna do their dog grooming course. At first I was wondering which course I should do first ( training or grooming), in the end I decided to do the training course first so that I can get used to being around dogs other than mine and my friends so that way I can better understand how to work with them. After watching your videos I’m really glad I made that choice and I’m also glad I was adamant to go to a school that offers hands on learning as well as bookwork.
I didn't know whether I wanted to be a vet or a counselor. But then i saw someone grooming a dog and i was like... hang on, maybe i might like that since I love animals but am terrified to do surgery on them and am squeamish. At this point it's either psychology or pet grooming
@@PawsRelax actually, to update, i might be looking into working in an animal santuary. Idk yet though. But thanks for your comment! I'm definitely getting closer to finding it out though I feel it
Hey! so i just found your vid today. And ive been thinking of becoming a pet groomer for quite some time. This video really encourages me! i will be continuing to watch your channel for a long time! i hope one day i can become truly part of this proffession. I LOVE animals with all my being. i feel like they connect with my soul even better than people sometimes. and i dont mind getting dirty and learning all there is to learn about safety and grooming!!!! I HOPE im not coming off as someone just going through a phase, I feel serious about it. My heart gets so excited thinking about the posibilities! Ive been stuck without a future career in mind for a long time! so maybe this would be a good career to bring me a balance of challange, and happiness :) and i could get some money out of it in the end if im good enough! do you think i could do it? i look forward to your videos THANK YOU!
!!!couple questions!!! I am looking to starting to my own mobile grooming service. I was going to hire a groomer and just be a business owner but the idea of no regulations has me thinking I could make more doing it by myself?? Also, could you consider making a startup budget video for beginners ?
Paws & Relax for example, I could pay a groomer to “work for me” or I could invest in myself and just learn via the website you spoke about. That way I wouldn’t have pay someone from earnings. This is something I’m very interested in I’m just having trouble getting a beginning budget to start things off. The trailer is no issue. Just want to make sure I will make enough to pay a groomer and make money for myself.
Mechanics don’t often go to school… but they are still able to pass along their knowledge. Our parents thought us so many things as well… even not being a teacher. Honestly, the whole humanity learned at first from listening other people. On the other hand, I’ve seen certified teachers, maybe even professors, with no skills to teach… 😬
I am considering an online school, there are no actual schools in my area, online is the only option. after you finish the course the pair you with a groomer in your area for a 150 hour internship, what are your thoughts?
Livy's Little Life animal behavior school is the school I saw that had the best options, I decided not to go with dog grooming bc it was going to take so long, but good luck.
Hey I’m from sri lanka and I really need to learn dog grooming because its my dream job. But in sri lanka there’s no schools to learn about grooming can I join grooming schools as a international student? Please help me with this
Hello! What do you mean by international student? You could teach yourself from watching videos like those on learntogroom.com or try out an online grooming course?
If I go to a pet grooming school is that basically my college? Or can I take pet grooming school after or before college? I’m just confused and need answers!
If you choose it to be your only form of college yes. You can become a master groomer which is worldwide recognized the schooling though is much shorter because it is still classified as a technical job but as I said you can make more of it if you like. Not all groomers do but someday they will have to I suggest jus doin it the right way first.
What about online schools that also have units of hands on learning? Also what is the difference between learning on UA-cam and in an online course. Why does it seem like you're more ok with UA-cam learning than online schooling ? No shade genuinely asking.
Can you make a living being a pet groomer, like there is I difference between getting by or actually making a loving and succeeding. So can you make good money being a groomer?
Okay I just got here so haven’t watched the video yet. I’m really thinking about just self teaching myself and having a salon at my home. (Allowed in my state). I’ve heard bad things about grooming at big cooperations and the schools they offer like the contracts and everything. No individual will take the time to teach me around town. I want to work alone anyways.
I recommend you check the age requirements of your region and companies you are interested in. The youngest I've seen some companies hire is 16. Don't be discouraged though! Research your local shelters to see if they are accepting young volunteers or start practicing with your own pets (or family member's pets). Learn as much as you can and keep an eye out for opportunities, I'm sure you'll find something :)
