This man is a f$#king genius. Although hardly able to contain his excitement in a interview/training forum, he exhibits more emotion in one riff than most of us have in our entire souls.
He is on the sonic youth album He says " hey goo .. what's new" ....on the Geffen album ...Sonic Youth Goo That's ... Better album art.. more street. Cred .. more media cred .. and beet than all you guitar stroking monkeys playing yngvie mucksterp or whatever... He sucks... J was on Goo... That's better than You.... Goo goo goo !
J Mascis is a guitar guy... He plays some cool notes ..written some cool songs..NOT A GENIUS...He can't give you the difference between quantum mechanics and quantum physics... That's not even genius.... So watch who you call genius .... Lil Einstein...
lol at everyone thinking that he's high or does drugs, he's pretty well known for being one of the only people who didn't drink or do drugs in the scene he came up in
I clicked this video expecting J to be showing us how he plays guitar and such. Instead he just talks about volume. That's classic right there. Should have seen that one coming. Haha that was great.
Loved Dinosaur Jr. growing up. Their version of Just Like Heaven, IMO, was just as good or better than The Cure’s. I first heard Dinosaur Jr.’s. version on a skateboard video, the name of which escapes me (I got a lot of my musical tastes when I was 13 or so from skateboard videos that I would watch over and over). I went for years without listening to them, but seeing this brought back memories of his wonderful playing style. Thank you for posting this!
I read the comments about him being "Excited" and tried to see what everyone was talking about and was confused, not realizing at first that they were being sarcastic and attempting to be clever. It's saddening that no one seems to have any tolerance for different personality types, who aren't as energetic as you bundles of joy must be. I saw nothing strange in his demeanor, because nothing strange is there. Go watch MTV if you want some excitement, and you'll find it, in exchange for talent.
@@famousashtray I think he's just not enthused by most things. If you watch his interview with Matt Sweeney (I think its a guitar moves episode?) he seems more excited than he usually comes off.
@@jessicamacleod7546 Did that make sense 7 years ago? lol... I wonder if it makes any more sense now. Maybe it's just me who can't make head nor tail of that sentence lmao! (No sarcasm; I'm a little high so it really could be my dumb brain. Alas, I think the "alas" is throwing me off)
watch his rig rundown. toward the end he tells what he uses in the studio, (there are no marshall stacks or jazzmasters in the studio!) he uses a vox ac15, an old fender bandmaster, a telecaster for lead tones and a les paul jr (with p90s) for rhythm.
The first 3 minutes: "The louder parts should be louder, and the quiter parts should be quieter. The louder parts are louder than the quiet parts, and the quiet parts are quieter than the louder parts. So uh, turn your distortion up. So that it's louder than the quiet parts. Those should be quieter." Final 30 seconds: actual riff demonstration.
I think the point is that asked to talk about something he is interested in he will talk quite cheerfully. The slow drawn out drawl is his way of dealing with questions he's heard a dozen times before.
I compare greg sage to hendrix not in playing wise but feel wise, Greg was bringing demons and space sounds through his and jimi spoke what was going on in late 60's through his guitar sounds. Both are aliens.
Hey V I saw him play a couple mths back with Janes Addiction he is a Awesome act great guitar and songwriting People who judge should really have a Fucking Good look in the Mirror or just watch the same old shit K Dash Crap!!
+SlCK SHlT that's a funnily accurate description. He's actually probably more outgoing than his vocal communication makes him seem -- look at those glasses!
greg sage dude, probably his biggest influence if you listen to the guitar styles of the two, j mascis likes to play much bigger and explosive guitar solos, but greg sage was a huge influence over all alternative rock. kurt cobain in particular had a style very reminiscent of greg sage and j mascis. j mascis and greg sage are 2 of the top 10 most influential guitarists on the formation of alternative rock that came after it.....
well i think hes normal, you would look "werid" too if a camara was on your face Anyways anyone here that someone was playing pacman in the background?
+Andrés Jácome Why the fuck not? The Telecaster is a great guitar, whatever you'd want to play with it. Might not be up to the looks you want, but try one for yourself. I bet you'll change your mind about it. :-)

Tampaterry54 thank you
Mostly it's just people pissing around and joking.
Shut up, boomer
He is just naturally that awkward is all lol
@@saintrhoads3375 Are you going to cry with this stupid "boomer joke"?
the clean sound of J's voice is definitely quieter than the fuzz on his guitar
Love how his personality is super chill and fairly emotionless... Then he plays and it's like WOW!
I clicked this video expecting J to be showing us how he plays guitar and such. Instead he just talks about volume. That's classic right there. Should have seen that one coming. Haha that was great.
He's more animated than usual because, for once, he's not answering a bunch of questions he's heard before but discussing his trade.
J Mascis the Steven Wright of guitar players. Seriously though this guy is great. Love Where You Been.
J actually is more enthusiastic here than usual. Watch interviews from the 90's
*generic comment about J. having to calm down*
This jay says eat a dick in hades! I want to die more now listening to this. Play some thrash
I'd fucking rather die than deal with this!
You'd think whoever is off camera could have held off on the Galaga game for a minute while J finished the vid.
I slowed it down so I could learn the riff. But then I heard J talking at slow(er) speed. I just found the cure for insomnia.
J's tone makes life worth living.
Awh, J's sooo cute, he's just like my panda stuff toy.
holy fucking god he is actually talking
Who the fuck is playing Galaga in the background?
Tupac
Love it. Someone is playing galga in the background.

alas your lessons in human interaction and nature begin and the ascension out of the overly serious and literal man you are.

Patto Grove galaga ringtone
I met J once, and yea... he really is that persona.. always has been.
2:50 "imagine there is a capo on the 3rd fret."

FKN LOL
Ahahahahahahahaha
That guitar solo at 2:26 was siq.
Gotta love that thinline tele

J loves the Big Muff...
killer riff
anybody who isn't familiar with the wipers go check them out, their first 3 albums are incredible....greg sage was a genius!
I compare greg sage to hendrix not in playing wise but feel wise, Greg was bringing demons and space sounds through his and jimi spoke what was going on in late 60's through his guitar sounds. Both are aliens.
J Mascis ROCKS !!!
J mascis makes me feel like I'm not chill enough
That man is playing Galaga.
J drops Greg Sage right out the gate....nuff said.
the room noise is louder than his voice- I guess they had to turn up the gain on the mic to be able to pick up useable audio.
Awesome.
did he talk about playing the riff or just getting his preferred sound
Hey V I saw him play a couple mths back with Janes Addiction he is a Awesome act great guitar and songwriting People who judge should really have a Fucking Good look in the Mirror or just watch the same old shit K Dash Crap!!
????
it's not about the jazzmaster!
Thanks, I like to play... *dink*
he plays so easily
great fun!
Nice Galaga sounds in the background. PTR.com needs a lav mic.
Thomas Kirby thanks! This was filmed a long time ago. We have several now
j gets too excited in interviews, its awkward
+SlCK SHlT that's a funnily accurate description. He's actually probably more outgoing than his vocal communication makes him seem -- look at those glasses!
i wanna know 2 things. whos got next on galaga, and what is the low wattage set up hes playing through. gawdamn its screaming!
I doubt it bc If you check the Wino interview lesson on here, you can hear the same ringtone. 8)
And yet he does.
I hate telecasters but the one he is using is a beauty.
in my oppinion most of the guitars he's using are beaties
was this filmed on a cruise ship
What's the song at the end ?
Who's playing Galaga in the background?!
galaga
there's another gun Lazer on this video pointing at j from j mascis opens up like never before WTF
sweet!!
He speaks way faster than usual!
I took acid once. Then I took acid. You scare me
Sloooow doooown, you're gonna hurt yourself thinkin too fast!
Turn down the galaga in the background I can’t hear the man speak
evwryone talking about how quiet he is but no one has noticed that he is playing a fucking thinline tele!!!!!
i cant tell if hes stoned or if he just hates everyone and everything and is just totally "over it"....
Aaa that high pitched noise
I always thought he was a little high strung in interviews
j? why?
I guess you could say he showed us how to do that tick..
THE ONE THAT MAKES ME LAUGH SHE SAID
yeah,cos that's like,one more than ten
I think it may be because hes speaking into a camera..he's quite socially awkward, think he's quieter when speaking to an interviewer
What's his influence I can't hear what he's saying?
I didn't catch the first one but the other three are Ron Asheton, Mick Taylor and Keith Richards.
Greg Sage from the Wipers was the first one
greg sage dude, probably his biggest influence if you listen to the guitar styles of the two, j mascis likes to play much bigger and explosive guitar solos, but greg sage was a huge influence over all alternative rock. kurt cobain in particular had a style very reminiscent of greg sage and j mascis. j mascis and greg sage are 2 of the top 10 most influential guitarists on the formation of alternative rock that came after it.....
give me the tabs j , dont be such a fcking , love u
holy shit ocd
Galaga!
A mic for his voice is to expensive? Too bad...
he so stoned
Pass the PCP, J...
He's make his clean sound quiet and his loud sound quiet? WTF
It's not a race J!
No, it sounds like someone just lost a game of Space Invaders.
LMAO!!!
why would i imagine if theres a cape po in the 3rd fret j? u should bring the cape po in the first place right
Did he drink a pot of coffee or something? That's the most I've ever heard him say
Wrong. He's straight edge. Always has been. That's just how he is.
Who the fuck is playing Galaga?
what!?
Play what we do is secret ....metal sux
Is he just talking shit to be different,, Or is he tellin the truth? somewhere in between is bullshit
well i think hes normal, you would look "werid" too if a camara was on your face
Anyways anyone here that someone was playing pacman in the background?
Not much of a guitarlesson. Great song though.
I love Jay but at 1.5 speed he sounds straight normal... At 2x he sounds like a coked up sorority chick
Brendan Morrison coked up sorority chick, i agree
he's so high i can't even see him
He's straight edge actually, which means he abstains from alcohol and drugs, you fucking idiot.
Jesus, how much cocaine did he take? If only he was like, more mellow or something
Sometimes I wish he'd just chill out a little and just let the guitar do the talking you know?
Yeah, dude needs to find some inner piece man
THEBIGZED stfu?
Obvious & dumb comments below .
why the fuck a tele?
I read somewhere that he mainly records with a Tele especially the rhythm parts.

+Martin Hertsius most solid guitar ever
r u the best guitarist? im one of the best bas players verified.. thx
Andrew E. K.
Not a good teacher…way too soft spoken and truly uninterested in his own work…plus this was recorded on a mic from dollar general 😂😂
try to be articulate ffs
Are you being ironic?
