  • Want your own Lumia 1520? Do what we did! Visit the fine folks at GSMNation and snap up a unit of your own: gsmnation.com (Full description below)
Most new-device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they're widely available, and we get to use them for a few days or a week if we're lucky as we work on our review.
Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It's a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it's a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity.
For about ... a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there's followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many people revisit the device to see how it feels a few weeks or months later, because everyone's already focused on the next big deal coming down the pipe.
So let's do something about that. Let's see how we feel about devices when they're not shiny and new anymore. This is After The Buzz.
    ___
The Nokia Lumia 1520 was one of the best Windows Phones of 2013, with premium specs and one of the most gorgeous displays on any smartphone.
It was praised in many reviews at the time... but how has it held up, faced with the test of time and a bevy of new opponents? Find out in Episode 37 of After The Buzz.

Good video. I still like to use my 1520 even after owning it for so Many months. A nice experience greets me whenever I come back to 1520 from another phone. First Windows phone that I really like and used as daily phone for couple of months.

My mum's had a 1520 for a few months and she still loves it. Sure, her tiny hands means single hand usage is out of the question, but she doesn't care. The display is perfect for her waning eye sight :)

This was a GREAT After the Buzz. I'm a proud owner of the 32 GB Lumia 1520 and it's the best phone I've ever had (list include lumia 920, iPhone's, Galaxy's, etc). The 1525 will be a great upgrade.
As with all Windows Phone complaints, Major apps need to get on board (Candy Crush, Banking Apps, etc). Beautiful Photos. I have no case on it and almost zero blemishes. Can't wait for Windows 8.1 on this beast of a phone.

kckishan It's that ludicrous size that throws me off - I have picked one up a few time when I've been phone shopping/ browsing & my god it's humongous. Otherwise I'd buy it in a heartbeat - but it's too big for me

I've got a 1520 and I still love it to this date! Yes it might not be perfect but then again what phone is? And frankly the only thing I hate about 1520 which isn't exactly the phone's problem but rather WP's is the lack of apps and the calendar issue which apparently not everyone finds it as a flaw.

Windows hone is amazing, and I love my 1520. Been using windows phone for 3 years now, and would never go back. Got it in December and it has held up so well. Very hard to scratch or dent because of the polycarbonate body. Windows phone is such an amazing OS and deserves more credit than its given. It is so easy to sue and reliable. Going from a windows phone to an xperia z last august, I hated it. No people hub, contacts where messy, horrible keyboard and lag ! Nokia build tough phones even now. I just love my 1520. Never going to back to android. Can't really fault it. You get used to its size. Just keep it in a phone pouch xD

you can't criticise it for being too big to put in your pocket, then say it's advantage is having a huge screen. the size of a phone is a known factor. you don't need someone to review that aspect of a phone. raktajino reminds me of jadzia dax. she's as good looking as a 1520.

    • @Pocketnow
      @Pocketnow  10 років тому +13

Totally disagree. Different big phones do "big" in different ways. The LG G Flex's curve makes it slightly more portable than, say, the Huawei Ascend Mate2. The Note 3's blockier build makes it more awkward than the Note II. This area is absolutely fair game for review (and re-review) coverage.
And Dax is wayyyyy better looking than any phone. :) ^M

Should have stuck it out with my lumia icon, but I'm a phone geek. Had to have the newest and switched to a note 4. Great phone but I really miss the intuitivness of Windows phone. Live tiles REALLY make life easier, plus I loved how different it is from Android and apple. I got rid of the icon mainly because I wanted a bigger screen. Note 4 is an amazing phone and packs quite a bit of tech under the hood but when you have android you get damn fragmentation. Not as bad as say 2-3 years ago but it's still there. Typing on a keyboard on an android is a nightmare compared to Windows phone. Even with SwiftKey installed it still is bad compared to typing on a Windows phone. I have VERY VERY few and far between typos on a Windows phone compared to Android. That's something Microsoft nailed down pat. Aside from less apps available which at this point it is really a VERY few SELECT apps that are not available for Windows phone, the " app gap" is essentially closed. Yes there's no actual you tube app but metro tube is a EXCELLENT replacement that you really wouldn't know the difference of. I actually looked for it on play store when I switched back to Android, that's how awesome the app is. Facebook is available. No it doesn't have all the same features but I also don't live on Facebook either. I'd love to get a 1520 since it is one of the last true nokia phones available out there.

@Eleftherios Papagrivas Do you expect anything to change? The build number in the preview is the same as what you'll find on the 630 and 930. MS have been done with 8.1 for awhile and the next update has just been finished and will probably be pushed out to dev accounts in the next month or so.

Very fair review of the phone's enduring capabilities, Michael Fischer. I love my 1520. It's hard to get that across to people who haven't given WP it's fair shake. And if they used a1529 with the WP 8.1 Developer Preview, if they're honest, wolf have to admit feature parity, with both IOS and Android. Even leapfrogging them with the camera app and OS smoothness.

Excellent offline world maps (saves me $$), good camera (though not as awesome as 808 pureview camera), loud enough speakers for me not to bring a boombox to work, and this phablet is FAST!! I add a high speed SD card and store everything on it. Very practical for my needs (Office, Office lens, OneNote, OneDrive).

The one thing I respected most about my 1520 is that I could not kill that phone in a day no matter how hard I tried.

Hey Eng Omar Moh! They should already be in separate playlists just as you'd like. Go to our main channel page (ua-cam.com/users/pocketnow) and you should be able to see them. ^R

if 1520 had 5.5 inch screen, it would be the most awesome windows phone ever!

If the 1520 had a 5 inch screen and still had all the same specs that it currently has including the micro sd card slot I most likely would not have returned it. The camera on this phone was probably the best one that I've ever used as well and since you have the option to save videos and pictures to the sd card I probably would of never run out of space due to the fact that you can now get a 128gb micro sd card for $20.

I really like this device, if it wasn't for the upcoming note 4 it would have been my next phone.

My Nokia Lumia 1320 is INSANELY GOOD. Dont see myself trading it for any other phone for a while.

It is real easy to beat up on WP. I myself am very much tempted to make WP my next. I'm not going to insult any of the other devices I currently use a gs3 like it a lot have never been a big fan of iPhone up till its next iteration has been to small. The impending 1525 to t-mobile has peaked my interest. But we shall see

@Rytis Vitėnas Um... Zeiss ARE Carl Zeiss optics. It's the official, new branding of that company, now. Wow, semantics, much?
