Delius: 'Evening Songs' - Julian Lloyd Webber.

Frederick Delius - 1862-1934 - An English composer. Born in the north of England to a prosperous mercantile family, he resisted attempts to recruit him to commerce. He was sent to Florida in the United States in 1884 to manage an orange plantation. There he soon neglected his managerial duties, and in 1886 returned to Europe. Having been influenced by African-American music during his short stay in Florida, he began composing. After a brief period of formal musical study in Germany beginning in 1886, he embarked on a full-time career as a composer in Paris and then in nearby Grez-sur-Loing, where he and his wife Jelka lived for the rest of their lives, except during the First World War.
Julian Lloyd Webber OBE 1951. A British solo cellist, conductor and broadcaster, a former principal of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the founder of the In Harmony music education programme.
On this video a beautiful collection of Delius songs arrangements for cello and piano. Julian Lloyd Webber has a special connection with the music of Delius having studied with Delius' famous amanuenses Eric Fenby. Each song has been beautifully and sensitively arranged by Julian Lloyd Webber in the great Eric Fenby tradition of presenting the music of Delius in alternative forms.

How on earth did I miss a Frederick Delius post from you? I have always been an admirer of Delius music, especially "The Florida Suite". As you said in the biography here, the composer's time in Florida spent absorbing the musical idioms of African American music partly explains his appeal to me on a personal level. Thanks Jayne.
