The thru-hulls that come with the AP are specifically designed for the cables on Humminbird units which are significantly smaller than other brands. Hence why you have to pop holes and use other thru-hulls for the cables on other brand units.
Old Town Kayaks are owned by the parent company of both MinnKota and Humminbird. Thus all the holes for fishfinders are sized to fit Humminbird wire harnesses. Any other brands require modifications.
You're 100% correct. It's also something that I gave them feedback on which is to be considerate that people use a variety of fish finder brands so these holes should be more universal.
Good walkthrough. I have a Garmin transducer much smaller than your transducer and mounted it flush to the hull using an adapter from Navarre fishing - he’s on UA-cam.
Dec 12, 2021.... I'm wanting to purchase that Old Town Autopilot. But there are so many channels from a year ago that seem to have the same issues with these Kayaks. For $4k it seems that Old Town should fix those things. #oldtownautopilot
I've never owned a Hobbie but I have the Old Town Sportsman Autopilot 136 and I am with you on not knowing where to put my hands while driving. I wonder if somebody makes an aftermarket set of arm rests that could just clip to your seat somehow. If not someone should make this. I like your setup!
I believe I posted it on my Instagram but I have 2 catch coolers I use. 1 I use most of the year is a soft sided cooler and the other is my fall Kings bag which is much bigger. Both attach to my back gear tracks. Let me know if a video or picture post would help
Excellent review my brother!!! always love the pros and cons, looking at buying one of these early 2022 so I can get back to my passions, hunting and fishing.like u and many others, I am a common sense guy.u would thing the engineers would listen to us once in a while and correct these minor issues that would make a major difference.God bless and stay safe ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Well done on an excellent & honest review! The fact that you used Hobie parts shows that they still have the edge overall. Kayak is very impressive but reckon it would be a beast to paddle should the battery run down. Not ideal for several day excursions... Enjoy and tightlines!!
Thanks Brian. Hard to say who has an "edge" honesetly. They both serve a purpose but Hobie is like Apple, you pay a premium for the name. The Sportsman comes in cheaper than a Hobie 360 right now (not taking account of battery purchase) and doesn't have major issues with the motor like the 360 drives do right now. I've paddled the Sportsman and it literally feels the same as peddling my Hobie. Kinda feel like they're similar in that way. Probably right about not being ideal for multiday trips/floats.
@@ChiCityYaker Jeez! Wasn't aware of problems with the 360 drive. How is that possible after their so called 6 years of r&d. You'd think it should be flawless after all that and the substantial price increase. Will not do them any favours for sure!
Instead of drilling a hole above the trolling motor mount, why not just take the trolling motor mount off and make the original hole under the trolling motor mount and make that one bigger?
You could have turned the transducer plate upside down or purchase one from Nick at ua-cam.com/video/t0HaFGEY0_s/v-deo.html. Whatever you do, I stronger advise you remount it to sit above the kill guard.
Things I do not like about mine. Spot lock is not really 5 feet its more like 15. Unless I buy a puck. very very very slow 3.9 mph max. Limited by distance I can go on a charge. Very very heavy compared to hobie pro angler. rudder controls feel cheap and flex the kayak the front hatch once you install fish finder is not waterproof. the side compartment beside the seat also not water proof. Things I do like The north setting on the remote is amazing for going down a bank. The ability to travel hands free Spot lock for fishing a point.
My spot lock is for sure within that 5ft range. I haven't noticed it break away more than that. Speed wise, I think that 4mph mark is solid. Going too fast in a yak actually wouldn't be good IMO. As for range, are you running a 100ah battery? I've gone 9.54mi in one trip nonstop 2.2 mph and still have over 25% battery left. I agree in rudder controls...they're stiff to me and at times feel like I might push too hard and break. Front hatch need rubber gasket not that foam so I agree, same with side comparment.
Not sure I'm understanding your question. If you mean how much space is in the transducer recession area, I'd say maybe 5" (rough estimate) to sit flush with the front skid plate. Anything more than that and the transducer would sit lower than the front of the kayak and that would be an issue anytime you put the yak on the ground.
I'd be scared to get stranded in open water with a motor failure and have to paddle in the that 160lb kayak. Rather a lighter kayak with a motor mount or a pedal drive on reserve
ChiCityYaker yes sir and I put that for ones with a Garmin however, they are making them for other finders so all makes a models are possible. I put the one I purchased for my Garmin and it works amazing. I mounted it on the grab handle I purchased from them and wow it works great. Just another options if you weren’t aware.
Pulled the trigger on this unit after watching you slay salmon with it. Can’t wait to get out
Congrats!
Great vid, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
I got 3 of my Hummingbird cables through! You need to use the other covers that have holes

Nice yeah I have bought some of his seat risers. Good stuff!
You can reverse the mount and bring it up higher
I wish I could win this beautiful kayak so I can complete my mission in saving our beautiful waterways universe
And you can also mount it to your motor
Nice review! I’m a PA14 owner. I would never switch over after watching this video.
Nice review and setup.
Thanks Jeff!
The pocket by the seat, maybe can you unscrew it and flip it, so it opens the opposite way🤷🏻♂️
Great review! Looks like your transducer still sits lower than the hull - maybe it's just the camera though.
Where is the water review?
Why not just enlarge the existing thru holes instead of making new ones?
Can you flip that storage the other way
not sure what you're referring too
I think that tranducer mount is really made for a hummingbird. Old town is sister company with Hummingbird and Minkota
100% it is. In a coming vid I'll cover my proposed concepts for a Mk.2 version of this yak.
@@ChiCityYaker have you seen the 2nd version?

what issues? I have not had one.
Very good video, hoping to get one Old Town auto pilot in the fall
If you do, you'll love it!
You can remove the locking collar and the cable will go through fine. Garmin sells replacement collars if you cant use the one you took off.
I don't use a Garmin though. So this really wouldn't have helped me in this case.

What did you ever figure out about your catch bag? Trying to figure out what to do when mine comes in next month.

You could’ve spliced all the wiring and used the provided holes and just made the connections inside the kayak
Nope. That was not an option for me. Adds unnecessary work that wouldn't need to be done if Old Town simply made bigger hole.
I had to make my own transducer mount for my Sportsman 120 MK. The transducer sat to low and since I beach my boat it would not have lasted long.
You can buy a fix on ebay. Search for "oldtown garmin transducer mount".
good review man. Not even interested in kayaks but ur comments are very sharp.
I wana do a collab sometimes if u interested. Will give u a shotout.
hey much appreciated! Sure my email is in the description, just reach out and let see what makes sense to collab on.
Yea

Fair question. I didn’t want to tinker with the frame in any way because it’s such a critical part.
It seems like Hobie has the better kayak?
Except for all of the 360 drive issues. I'll take the Autopilot any day.
Do you have a separate battery for your electronics and where is it?
Yes, Nocqua 10ah battery and right in the front hatch is where it goes.

What about the kayak trailer? Does old town sale trailers specially for there kayaks?

Can you not mount the transducer in-hull?
honestly no. Not enough room in hull to do it.
You think the existing smaller holes were made for specific transducer model?
Hummingbirds
What is the depth in inches from the skid plate to the bottom of the kayak (amount of room for transducer).
Not sure I'm understanding your question. If you mean how much space is in the transducer recession area, I'd say maybe 5" (rough estimate) to sit flush with the front skid plate. A pedal drive can fail too and a lighter kayak is comparatively more unstable. Everything has its pro and cons.

The only thing missing is a cloking device to go invisible. So, the Barnie fifths leave you alone
lol adding that soon! Need those guys to stop pulling up next to me when I'm catching fish!
Yikes, 4000.
