    Minor corrections (My apologies!!):
(16:25) Reina actually says ‘浅い!’ ‘asai!’ which means ‘shallow (hit)’. - Heihachi reference.
(17:58)小賢しい kozakashii means; “clever”!! (thanks pikermanYT!)
Also, at 15:02, Reina actually says 沈め ‘shizume!’ which means “sink” (thanks guguruseto!).
In relation to this line (8:03):
In terms of this quote: “Ugh, is there anything more boring than being conventional?”
The literal translation is: “As per the files, huh? There’s nothing more boring that planned/expected harmony.” The first part of the quote in Japanese “資料通り” (shiryō-dōri; as per the files) is excluded in localisation. I’m not discrediting the localisation… but I’m curious as to what this line could mean, or how this could be contextualised in a fight. I’m not saying I’m right or wrong. Kind of confused as to why they removed the first part… but, fill me in on this one. Thanks to guguruseto for helping me out on this.
“This one is a bit tricky, since
資料通り (Shiryō dōri) - “As per the document/data/plan” the translations weren’t so clear cut,
    予定 (Yotei) - “Plan”
    調和 (chōwa) - “Harmony/Balance”
予定調和 (Yotei chōwa) - “Planned Harmony” As in, a very roundabout way of saying “Flawlessly planned”
ほど (hodo) - a word to compare one thing to another. In this sense, she’s saying that “compared to this, nothing is more boring”
つまらんもの (Tsumaran mono) - Tsumaran (Boring); mono (thing)”
I’m also aware Reina has lines against Heihachi in combat, so I’ll decipher what I did hear:
“これで!” (korede!) - here!; In that context: ‘Take this!’
    “未だ未だ!” (madamada!) - Not yet!

While 小賢しい does have the English word "clever" in JP-EN dictionaries, your initial interpretation is actually correct. Monolingual definitions make it clear that it's more of a "You little shit, you think you're fucking smart?" kind of statement more than "Props to you!" one.

16:38 I think when in certain martial arts the attacker shouts the part of the body they're going for is not to warn or prepare the defender but rather to show one's intention and resolve. But it also fits Heihachi and Reina since it gives off that "I'm hitting you there what are you going to do about it"-vibe.

    • @fragmentedpixels
      @fragmentedpixels  Місяць тому

that’s interesting-I see. I thought it’s the latter, but that definitely makes sense contextually from a martial arts perspective. but without that knowledge I think you could say that they’re doing so with that intention, as you say.

I grew to like Reina. Ever since she’s introduced from her trailer, I saw how awesome she is. Hopefully, Reina gets to improve as a new villain. I like Heihachi, but seriously, I never wanted him to return in Tekken 8. Reina should be Heihachi’s spiritual successor, due to how similar her combat prowess and moves looked. Reina should be enough for us.

18:08 For those two lines, いいぞ! and もっとだ!, they're heard after taking certain attacks. I think they're heard on moves that attack you on the ground in any way, but I think besides the moves labelled under "Attacks on Grounded Opponents." (Which are varieties of things like d1 or d2 or d1+2 or d4.)
いいぞ! can be reliably heard when you do a Reina mirror and one of them makes a 1+3 grab (IIRC, it should be the basic grab that has a floor break property) where the other says that. Taking Reina's moves for example, things like Nen Ashigarami (ch f1+2 3), Charging Hard (HW Reversal), and Saijin Ikkoku (grab input, right side) will trigger those lines. (If you notice, it's all moves that step on her face. Kinda masochistic, but really, that's just her taunting her opponent further.)

If Reina did go to Mishima Polytechnical School with Jin, Xiaoyu, Miharu and Kunimitsu Jr., I imagine she would have dressed and acted like a typical sukeban except maybe old ladies into traffic out of disrespect. I say this because of how the Japanese government denies that Heihachi Mishima is Japanese, I imagine Reina has absolutely zero respect for Japanese societal expectations.
I'm surprised she has no unique quote against Asuka since she's a Kazama like Jun.
It's hard for me to speculate anymore without discussing spoilers, so I'll leave it at that. Great video BTW.

I agree and Reina could’ve definitely been a sukeban type of character, and I wouldn’t have been surprised. she also hates other peoples authority and has a ‘my way or the highway’ aspect to her-except for those she cares about (Heihachi). I’m also surprised by the fact they have no interaction as well, but Asuka sadly became Flanderised as a character over the years… 😩
She kind of has Jin’s teenage cockiness as well, but IDK that could be a reach.

@@KazuyaKai923 Technically speaking so are Kazuya and Jin
But I missed that journal entry when I played the DLC.. Now here's the question. Presuming that Heihachi killed the clan shortly after the betrayal (because that makes more sense than leaving them alive until after Tekken 2, although that would make it much easier to explain), that would mean that either
A: Reina is much older than initially thought (that would make her roughly 45 years old)
      or
B: The baby he left alive is the mother of Reina, either willingly or unwillingly (Maybe a year or two after Nina was used to create Steve? That would line up perfectly)
Considering she definitely seems like she has Mishima genes and looks like she is around 20 years old, I'd be willing to go with B.
Honestly that would give a completely new meaning to the scene where Nina and Reina meet.

Damn, I'm really late to the party.
1:57 屈服 is a rather verbose word in Japanese and wouldn't be said by a typical high school kid, just as "capitulation" is verbose and wouldn't be said by most English speaking high school kids.
2:45 Still no ~てもらう explanation, I see. lol
4:55 Much like with 屈服の味を知るがいい, this is also very much a command, though the way you said it makes it seem more like an invitation, which is an amusing difference.
5:09 I gotta wonder if the localization team was actively trying to stay on the UN's good side. I mean, sure, the UN have already shown in their track record that they won't stop disastrous events as they're happening even though that's why they were founded in the first place -- but they have, on the other hand, at least toyed with the idea of placing severe freedom of expression limitations specifically on Japan over the legality of certain materials that other regions have already deemed as explicitly illegal even though they're still perfectly legal in Japan.
6:00 Be very careful of the pronunciation. You distinctly said "otto", which means "husband", not "father". Japanese really doesn't have that many unique sounds at its disposal, so getting it wrong can massively throw off what you're trying to say.
8:24 There's actually nothing wrong with the usage of ん. That whole thing about it being offensive is entirely incorrect. Its main function is explanation. She is asking for an explanation as to why Jin lost to her. The only reason it may be taken in offense is because it was a condescending rhetorical question.
9:15 Your attempt is once again much farther off than the official translation. 退場 means "exiting (from a venue or event)". It doesn't have the same implications of any sort of "I will end you" type of statements. It's pretty benign, though that ~てもらう ending makes it clear that Reina wants Jun to exit the competition on her account. Also, see why I keep harping on this ~てもらう thing?
    14:59 沈め, not 進め.
16:15 Not a critique of this entry, but I really want you to pay attention to the word 死ね when you go over Heihachi's win quote on Jin because he says it at the very end in Japanese, whereas the translation has the "die" part at the very beginning. Everything he says up until that very last second is quite comforting with all the "Good work" and "Leave the rest to me". Tacking on "AND DIE!" was very comical and the English version doesn't even try to get it across. My cousin didn't understand why I started cackling like a mad hyena when he beat my Jin with his Heihachi.
16:26 浅い, not 遅い, but I can hear why 遅い would make sense.
16:39 Fun fact, calling out your intended target is also a thing in kendo, I suppose to prove that a point was completely intentional rather than just getting a lucky swing in.
Overall, you and your team did great with this one. I wonder if you're gonna do non-Japanese dialogue as well. My main boi is Hwoarang, but my Korean is really bad. I could use a video just like this for his lines.

    • @fragmentedpixels
      @fragmentedpixels  Місяць тому +1

thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. As with my last comment, I still want your help with proofreading since I think your knowledge would be very helpful for a future character I’m working on! email is fragmentedpixelsfp at gmail.com (replace ‘at’ with ‘@‘) if you’re interested (or if you have another way of contacting, please let me know). it’d be very helpful!!
      onto the video stuff:
8:24-about the ‘-n’ particle ending, I see what you mean, though I was saying that part can be used in that way in some contexts, not in the context of that sentence.
Ah, yeah, the exit part was key… but it’s so annoying as I genuinely thought it was about ending her. And that ending part you mentioned as well. Eeee, honest mistake.
And ya, I see that the ‘capitulation’ (lol) line is a command-but honestly based on I guess how I also understood it without context, I would take it another way tbh!! generally, that line is awkward either way…
Mm, I’m definitely gonna brush up on my pronunciation of ‘otōsama’-eek that’s kinda embarrassing!!
Overall, I’d say I did a decent job-albeit w some honest mistakes that’ve been pointed out to me. And the mistake on the Kanji for ‘slow’. Thanks again!!
Yeah, I’m gonna cover Hwoarang-it should be easier on the reading and romanisation side since I can read it. Sadly, in terms of understanding-I only understand a few words! 😅
