I know this is a joke, but I could do this with my eGPU with 2M Thunderbolt cable. And I found that you can connect multiple cables together with USB-C gender changes. Makes it difficult to get a connection the first time, but it can work. I have not tested the limits. I got 2M active cable + 0.5M passive 40Gbps cable working for total of 2.5M.
Okay people, we're definitely living in 2018 when even our cables can change their gender to their likings...

I'm sure it would work better if you used more of 1m connections. Also, this gave me an idea - put the GPU in a seperate cooling box closer to the monitor. This way you have completely different cooling environments for CPU and GPU, providing much more control over it. The PC does end up being 2 boxes, but overally cool concept if you don't have to move PC. I'm wondering how much can you improve thermals (if at all) by doing this?
P.S. I know this video is over 7 months old.

managing that on the other hand is a different story
Refrigerators rely on the fact that there's little heat being added to the fridge. The cooling element will do nothing to keep your graphics card cooler, and it may even expose it to higher temperatures than what it would normally experience due to heat build up. Linus did an episode on using a refrigerator to cool a PC already.
The compressor in a fridge isn't strong enough to deal with the heat a gpu would put off.

Are you sure? That could be down to restrictions on the country you tunneled to, plus a lot of torrent sites have been straight up taken down instead of blocked by now, I never had problems with tb so this is strange

I'm surprised how far it actually was able to go. The bit error rate is probably atrocious!
Thing to note, PCIe gen 3 devices go through a link training sequence to negotiate link speed and equalization settings between the transmitter and receiver. All gen 3 devices must be capable of running at gen 1 (2.5 Gbps) and gen 2 (5 Gbps) speeds in addition to gen 3 (8 Gbps) and must start at gen 1 speed and negotiate their way up to gen 3 speed. Chances are at the 3m distance (and even some of the shorter distances) the link was only running at gen 1 speed. It'd be interesting to put an oscilloscope on it analyze the signal quality. We have some pretty nice oscilloscopes at Tektronix that could easily do the job! 😃

Hi there, while looking for a solution concerning PCIe extensions... (...the year is 2024) your test popped up! Very interesting!
I have a Gen9 HP DL360 and I am willing to connect two external GPUs by using 2x PCIe 3.0 x16 extensions. Reason: It's an old machine, it was bought relatively cheap, and it's already here... and it hasn't, to a certain extent, disappointed me yet!
My Idea:
Use the PCIe 3.0 extensions running through the back of the server - plan is using long ones - removing the slot covers to allow the extensions through;
My server PSU is a platinum 1400 watt which came with the server when I bought it. It's meant to power up the server's CPUs and the usual server stuff, and therefore I believe an 800 watt psu will do the job, leaving me the 1400 watt to use with the external GPUs by adding a Parallel Miner breakout circuit;
I have 4 SATA power connectors, and I am currently using only 3. The thing is, while I plan to use an HP similar power supply but being with a breakout circuit such as the [ X21 Breakout Board ], do you recon there is any sort of way I could use the fourth sata power connector to send signal to the external power supply breakout circuit to tell the PSU to turn on? Or is it best practice to power-up the auxiliary PSU and then fire-up the old HP Monch...?
Theoretically I think I could plug an Add2PSU chip to the fourth sata port in order to send power signal to turn the secondary power supply, but correct me if I am wrong, that would have to be an ATX power supply, right?
