From what I could find in the internet: The people in charge of the hospital and employees weren’t taking care of the building, and the landlord who owned the property wanted to evict them. He soon brought them to court where they were evicted and not allowed to go back to retrieve their stuff, concerning them due to the radiation present in the radiotherapy room. The radiation was actually forgotten about by the landlord, and from what I believe he eventually decided to not take ownership of the building, and it fell into disrepair. After the incident with the radiation, 3 Doctors who were in charge of the radiotherapy were charged with negligence.

That same fear and yuckiness is back, in a different form little Ryder, this time,...it's deadlier" My thoughts are with the people of Brazil at the moment, who have no recourse.
It wasn't the brother's fault, they did it out of ignorance. The real culprit here is whoever left the canister at the hospital. They knew better. They could have prevented all this. Those brother's were just trying to make a little extra scratch
No is there fault
@@sunface3064 shut up it wasn’t
@@sunface3064 Nope
@@sunface3064 It was their fault for breaking into a property looking for loot, yes. But the hospital should have removed all dangerous substances away from the facility before vacating, so (first world countries at least) they would be liable for the most part.
So something that it fails to mention is that the individuals took apart the imaging machine to get the canister. As for it being left in the derelict hospital, this is due to the machine being effectively on loan. Most medical devices that use radioactive substances are tied to a contract for maintenance and also disposal of at the end of its life/use. However, due to the costs involved in actually disposal of the materials, they just refuse to collect it.

Finally someone has covered this subject, here in Brazil this story is known as "Cesio-137 Case" i always thought that this is very nice theme for educational UA-camrs to speak about, nice video!
Eu tbm pensei nisso, ngm fala acidente de Goiânia, mas sim cesio-137
This is a very nice video, but it leaves out some of the truly unforgivable elements of what happened. Carlos Figueiredo (one of the people that worked in the IGR) warned everyone that there were highly radioactive substances left in the abandoned hospital but the insurance company went to the police and prevented him from going back to the building and retrieving it, because they thought he was just going to try to steal the copper wire. He tried to go to other officials too, but they didn’t take him seriously. He warned them that he would not be responsible “for what would happen with the cesium bomb.” Then they posted a security guard to make sure he didn’t go back on the premises. He knew it was dangerous and he tried to warn them but nobody took him seriously.
and in the end they blamed him and his partners for the crime. Brazil for you.
Actually the girl was playing with the shiny dust and her mother called her to eat the dinner, which was eggs, and the girl ate them with her hands without wash them first, then she accidentaly swallowed a few of the radioactive particles. At least this is what I learnt from school, I'am brazilian. And btw I know that if she had washed her hands it wouldn't have made any difference

This incident always makes me sad whenever I watch documentaries about it. Honestly, it wasn't the guys fault, but the hospital's. You don't leave radioactive material behind like this. And the population reaction to Leide's funeral is frustating but somewhat understandable. It was the 80's, in Brazil you didn't know jackshit about radiology because it wasn't something taught in school. And to think this happened _one_ year after Chernobyl, the world only was starting to understand the destructive power of radiation.
Also, wonderful pronunciation of Goiás and Goiânia! But the people's names cringe me out a little but it's understandable tho.
Not the hospital’s fault, the local government knew about the radioactive material stored there yet still forbade the owners from removing it, that’s why the cop was hired as security for the place. Just a month before the theft that caused this the owners of the equipment returned to collect it and dispose of it properly but the local authorities turned them away, the owner was even quoted saying as he was turned away “you guys will be responsible for what happens with the cesium bomb” they even wrote the organization that monitors nuclear waste and told them the local government won’t allow them to remove the radioactive materials from the site. The hospital owners did everything right but was stopped by the uneducated local officials who didn’t care or appreciate the dangers of radiation.
