Speaking as something of a military historian, the very last thing the US wants to do is detonate nuclear explosives within atmosphere directly above their own country, so I believe it would be an absolute last resort to use nuclear arms

I reckon the reactor alone exploding would do a lot of damage, and that's on top of the collateral damage and fallout of the US detonating nukes on its own soil. A good swath of the US would become uninhabitable.

That said, falling debris would be the least of our worries in this scenario, the fallout and collateral damage from the nuclear detonations alone would take decades to recover from, never mind the environmental impact of whatever coolants, fuel, and other foreign substances aboard that ship would have.

The real Achilles heel of the Empire is the legendary incompetence of Star Destroyer ship commanders. For a Star Destroyer to find itself within the atmosphere of a planet it means to destroy, within range of both ground and normal air forces, pretty much says it all.

I'd say the biggest determining factor is the difference between Star Wars metals and real-world metals, and how Star Wars shields hold up against projectile weapons. Bullets and smaller missiles may just plink off things as small as TIE fighters.
The metal alloys which are used in stars such as durasteel etc...are a gazillion times more better in quality ,durability and strength than steel ,titanium and other artificial metal alloys of ours .Comparing the level of industry and metallurgy of star wars to ours is overkill and is insulting to the quality of metals in star wars .

It's an important part of the discussion to consider the EMP effect of nuclear weapons. On one hand, this could mean that only a couple or even a single nuclear weapon could effectively disable the star destroyer, but on the other hand the effect would likely impact the continental US, especially at such low altitude. That and the added impacts of radiation may make the US military less keen to use nuclear weapons, at least at first.
Additionally, if the Empire is smart they would target GPS satellites in orbit, which has the potential to severely hinder communications and targeting systems throughout the US military

Modern Fighter Jets would obliterate TIE Fighters from dozens of miles away.
And even if the Fighter Jets wanted to play around in dogfight... They're faster and could still easily wipe the floor with TIE's considering how supermanuverable modern missiles are.
As for the Star Destroyer it would be one gigantic hard to miss target. It's shields would be a tough nut to crack though the sheer volume of ordinance and missiles available would bring down the Star Destroyer and it can do absolutely nothing about it other than to power up it's hyperdrive and buzz out as soon as possible.

I won’t acclaim myself to be a Star Wars nerd but it’s knowledgable that TIE fighters, interceptors, and other fighter craft within the Imperial Navy have access to a variety of ordinance BESIDES normal lasers; for example, ion torpedos, which have the effects of an EMP; missiles, which would almost certainly be more advanced then ours and so would be able to handle more G, and so would be harder to evade (and when you say super-manoeuvrable, I hope you don’t assume they do top gun stuff and follow you everywhere); flares; and other advanced weaponry. Furthermore, though the ISD (Imperial (II) Star Destroyer) has no single-purpose anti-aircraft batteries (and by this I mean AA guns), it is fair to assume that the targeting system, which is commonplace on all ISD, could easily guide secondary and trench-placed turbo lasers to engage aircraft while primary batteries continued an orbital bombardment. In the video it was stated that the ISD is highly manoeuvrable, and indeed quick, with a speed which reaches slightly below that of the average fighter. Let’s use the F22 for my example. 2,414 km/h is the top speed of the Lockheed Martin F22 Raptor, with a cruising speed of 1,963 km/h. That’s Mach 2.2 and 1.6 respectively. During the Star Wars movies we can see that, during large-scale naval engagements, TIE fighters or zipping around ISDs and other frigates, capital ships, Corvettes, etc, with ease. Do you think that in battle an ISD would go at 200 km/h? No, it would be evading with its top possible speed. Therefore, it’s plausible to assume the TIE fighter can achieve speeds of up to 7.5 Mach at least. And that’s highly generous. So, in the upper atmosphere, no. The F22 Raptor would be extremely outmatched when it comes to speed at least.

Walkr2002 I don’t think that bullets would work because the only way for any solid object to pass the shield is if it moves very slowly, as of what I understood from The Clone Wars. I am not quite sure.
Valery Michail Belchinsky blaster bolts are really a really hot ball of heat, the shield dissipates the heat, there are actual “guns” in Star Wars which fite bullets, something like a cycler rifle or another one shot rifle uses a bullet or a charge and are able to go through shields as they are ballistic based.

Star wars uses alien metals and alien generators with ALIEN BATTERIES to power their ships. we can't reproduce that. much less learn how to actually use it.

For example Kyber crystals - they are rare even in the Star Wars universe. Without those, even with the knowledge, we would still be unable to make any new light sabers or super lasers. Without the alien elements used in their reactors, we cant power our own home built reactors thus no power source to allow Earth built ships to generate enough energy to jump into hyperspace aka NO FTL travel for us.

I actually think that F-22s outclass tie fighters just because the AMRAAM misfiled they have and their ability to engage an enemy from so far away. And tie fighters don’t have any actual lift so they will rely on sheer engine power and will not be as maneuverable

I would actually say that the ISD would have won. Earth's forces have no idea there is a shield. After the first failed attack, it would take some trial and error to figure out how to take it out, and what generates it. Time goes by and 24 hours is not enough to gather the required information on how to take down a Star Destroyer.
America would just go with plan B, nuke it. And it’s not like each missile will carry One Nuke. We have payloads that can carry more then just one. And if we launch them all at the star destroyer it ain’t gonna live.
A Star Wars shield is to block energy, this one is not to block a physical object.

The match up:
Letting people know that the speed of a star destroyer is that great.
Fact is, most people here think “meh advanced ship must be fast”
The top speed of a Imperial Star destroyer is around 950kph or 606 mph without Hyperdrive Roughly the speed of a Korean War fighter jet.
This is also canon*
The speed of a tie fighter is roughly 746 mph (1,200 kph) slower than any modern jet.

The weapons are foward facing only. Not only that but they are essentially visual range only. The KX9 laser cannons of the T-65 X-Wing have a range of 8km (Optimal) and 80 max (This is from Legends but I see no reason to disbelieve this). If the L-s1 of the TIE has similar performance then it is clearly outmatched compared to modern missiles.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM of the US has a range of ~190km. It is fire and forget, meaning it will continue to track and go after the target even if not fed external targeting data. The laser cannons go straight.
The TIE has a shit profile from the side. Those large, iconic solar panels are a huge target.
Ion engines are not “cold” (Relatively speaking) meaning that heat-seekers like the Sidewinder missile can still lock on and kill the target. Sidewinders also have a max range of 35km meaning that even the “close range” missiles of the US is still greater than the TIE’s optimal range.
Aerodynamically it is not comparable to real-word aircraft. It’s a ball held by struts to solar panels. Nothing is streamlined or made for maneuverability.
The speed of aircraft like the F-22 Raptor, for example, is more than twice that of the TIE. Weighing in at 2,410kph compared to 1,200kph of the TIE.
The TIE also, by the Stalinist Imperial doctrine of “Quantity is a quality”, means that the pilot doesnt’t have an effective ejection mechanism. It’s there but barely used and essentially relegates the pilot to just float in space in their life support suit. There is nothing like a parachute mentioned as far as I have read throughout the years. (This is most likely just glossed over though as an unnecessary detail.) It’s basically just a rocket seat that propels the pilot out of the spacecraft.
The TIE has no shields. It can’t take advantage of them the way an X-Wing does. The X-Wing uses deflector shields in atmosphere to decrease air resistance and increase speed/maneuverability. Not only that but the lack of shields means that any hit can/will be catastrophic.
The TIE pilot cannot look behind them. There are no mirrors and the cockpit is not a bubble shape like many modern (And even older) fighter aircraft (Though it is a literal bubble). When it comes to a knife fight they can’t really tell what the enemy is going to do.
TIE pilots also wear those ridiculous helmets. Our pilots wear helmets that display radar data or show the target/what they are looking at. American pilots can even use their helmets to look at a target to facilitate a lock on. TIE pilots look through two Stormtrooper-type eyeholes. It would be like dogfighting while wearing a shitty gas mask and nothing else.
The only advantages that the TIE has are numbers, loiter time, and the ability to operate outside of the atmosphere. In the case of the latter this means that they can flee to or attack from an area that no modern fighter can truly reach.”
Ground troops- the US Army and Marines have quality training and equipment- Stromtroopers do not, its “quantity over quality” for the empire.
The US could easily cause massive damage to stromtroopers corps.

This is fine but you’re making the empire attack in a dumb way while the US defends in their own territory, three star destroyers can just orbit, scan, send probe droids, bomb, intercept any missile sent at them at any speed because of the time it will take to reach the ships altitude in orbit.. you rarely see star destroyers enter the atmosphere and Tie fighters are designed for space. Stormtroopers vs US army tho, that’s another story because bullets will be devastating to armor made to stop energy based. It only takes a couple of attacks for the empire to understand how our weapons work tho and deploy some resistant vehicles or just completely cut the energy of any facility in our planet and sabotage every communication device. Once they’ve done that it’s chaos and they can invade freely. With just three star destroyers playing smart they can conquer Earth, if they get easily destroyed is not because of human strategy or technology it’s just because they played it really bad

Also do keep in mind that a nuclear explosions detonating in midair act like EMP devices so if the missiles ended up hitting the top of the shields then not only is a nuke doing damage to The Shield it is also knocking out certain systems that are not protected against a EMP but this EMP will also most likely knockout Electronics in the city below at the same time

I think a big thing the comments are forgetting is in both cases, it depends heavily on who's commanding the U.S. Military, and who's commanding the star destroyer.
For instance, if Admiral Ozzel, the Vader-choked commander who bungled up the surprise attack at the beginning of Episode V was in charge? I think that greatly increases the chance of the U.S winning. If, on the other hand it's someone like *Grand Admiral Thrawn* on that destroyer? Then there's a horrifically greater danger to the U.S. Military and the world as a whole.

The person commanding the ISD would still die in fire when the nukes hit. Mobile nuclear assets, specifically subs, would decimate the Impstar Deuce from a range far superior to what the ISD has.

I just realized that anti air missiles would probably be effective against TIE Fighters. Because no one in the Star Wars universe uses anti air missiles, then no starfighters would have flares or chaff.
Anti air missles are a thing, as you can see in episode 2 when Jango Fett uses them against Obi Wan.

Laurentiu Nistor Russia doesn’t have the tech to hit the broad side of a barn. Remember back during the first Gulf War, all those videos of the US smart munitions? Little crosshairs on the target, a few seconds latter no more target. Now jump forward (25 years) to Russia in Syria, they show their videos, crosshairs on a target, few seconds latter...large explosion seen on the very edge of the video, 😂. There was even one that they had to swing the camera with the crosshairs around to see where the damn bomb hit. I guess that is why Russia had to make such a big bomb, when your off by a mile, just blow up everything in the mile radius. After a couple days, they stopped showing those videos, wonder why. BTW, the tech of the US has only gotten better since the 90s.

I love it but all the destroyer would have to do is get out of the atmosphere and then proceed to blast the shit out of the planet again. In reality we would lose. Plus he doesn't even mention the deflector shields on the thing and what it takes to disable them long enough to deal damage. And what the destroyer is made of. And the fact nukes are a double edged sword.
That's the reason why he made it be in-atmosphere, as literaly anything thats above 500km is completely invulnerable to any of the earths weapons, and could literaly just sit up there and drop big rocks on us.

I'd say TIE fighters are actually inferior to F-22s in practical combat; TIEs have terrible design for in-atmosphere dogfighting (very un-aerodynamic) and must be in visual range to engage an opponent, while F-22s are designed to be very fast in-atmosphere and carry missiles that can be launched at targets far out of visual range.

Rolf Neve while our targeting systems may be inferior, they would certainly be good enough to target a TIE fighter; the large solar arrays on the sides would easily allow a radar lock. Also, the standard TIE fighter does not carry torpedoes, only dual laser cannons. Additionally, torpedoes are not designed to work in atmosphere and as such have a much shorter range than the air to air missiles carried by most USAF fighters.

Star Wars lasers are not LASERS (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation). It is just a word used to describe what we know to be a Plasma Bolt, similar to how their 'slug throwers' are not called guns or 'slugs' are not called bullets.
All of the laser weapons displayed in Star Wars travel slower then the speed of sound - with the 'blaster' only going as fast as a Fastball pitch (~90 mph). The Standard Air to Air missile travels at x2.5 times the speed of sound.

Depends on the yield of them. Small tactical nukes in the 1-10 kiloton range would probably just bounce off the ISD's shield and shake the ship a bit.

If it was a handful of nukes, I would agree. But a enough nukes to kill the Earth? Star Destroyer shields and turbolasers couldn't defend against it. Range is the biggest issue, but ICBMs could still probably solve that issue.
