  • This white bookshelf design was a compromise with my wife. She wanted white, I wanted black walnut, so this is what we ended up with. The combination of the white and walnut in this design ended up working well together and this bookshelf will be in our family for a long time. I also included some of my mistakes in this video to show you that even experienced woodworkers still make mistakes!

    My name is Jared. I am an engineer by day and a woodworker by night... usually after the kids are in bed and before the neighbors call the cops!
    This channel is about all things woodworking. I do project build videos, how-to videos, shop setup and shop layout videos, tip & tricks, and tool reviews of the stuff I'm using. I will also show you how I organize and work in my small shop in 1 bay of my garage. If you want to improve your woodworking and get inspired with some creative projects and innovative designs, come join me as a fellow evening woodworker and let's go make some sawdust!

    That turned out beautiful...Always remember, A happy wife is a happy woodworker. Now maybe you can convince her to let you have more of the garage...lol

    Beautiful shelf. Your comment about your wife threatening to buy one is so true. I usually hear "you're too busy" or "I don't want to wait a year". Man that hurts

    Thank you for the video! I am slowly realizing that buying good lumber is actually a savings when you account for the time spent trying to make cheap construction grade wood wood straight and compliant.

    • @EveningWoodworker
      @EveningWoodworker  3 роки тому

      Yes, there's a time and place for construction lumber, but it's not in fine furniture!

    Congratulations on completing such a beautiful and difficult project. I appreciate you including the mistakes so if nothing else, I get some comfort in the knowing that I am not the only woodworker who makes mistakes :). I know what you mean about painting wood. I even love the natural look of poplar (which is the hardwood I normally use due to budget constraints :) as it ages beautifully. But you have to please the "customer" (which is my case is almost always family and friends and they get an incredible discount). Are you a musician as well? You have a beautiful piano. Thanks for the well produced and informative video.

      @EveningWoodworker  3 роки тому

      Thanks! Yes the family customers can be more difficult or more forgiving depending on the person... and yes I play the piano whenever I need a break from life!

    Beautiful piece of work. It looks great next to y'all's piano. Appreciate the fact you share your goof ups, we all make them. I most likely will cut an angle in the wrong direction on the end of a piece of trim. Only done that 3 or 17 times.

    Nice project, looks great. I had a two year rocking chair and have a 8 month hall table with parts in a pile. Know the feeling. Keep up the nice work.

    Great video, thanks for the effort in making it. Had a question regarding if the walnut shelves ever bowed or sagged over time. I've never worked with walnut in a long shelf but I've had other wood sag if it's not supported in the middle at least. I just realized it's only been a year and a half so it's probably just fine.

    • @EveningWoodworker
      @EveningWoodworker  2 роки тому

      No sagging so far, but that's why I went with the 6/4 walnut. Try using the Sagulator... just Google it. You can calculate what the sag will be on almost any shelf material.

    Nice work! This demystified a few questions I had to build some shelves myself. Well done! How many coats of paint did you use and did you use a clear coat or finish on top of that?

    • @EveningWoodworker
      @EveningWoodworker  3 роки тому +1

      I did three coats of paint, but I added an additional layer of clear polyurethane on the white shelves inside the cabinet to help in the high wear areas
