I've got one of those. Made by North American Signal in Chicago. I also have the 1,2, and 3 bulb versions.

Hey Richard. I have one of these. It has one lead coming out of the bottom. I don’t want to overload it since it’s been in an old garage for years so should I run it at a lower voltage than 12v for a bit to make sure I don’t overheat the condenser? Also how would I attach the one lead for proper testing? Since there are 2 test lead clamps, not sure what to ground to. I assume I attach the red lead clamp to the one lead from the beacon? Newbie here. Thanks!

It will only work powered direct to the battery because it draws higher amperage than a norminal power supply or battery charger provides. Not recommended to power a motor at less than normal voltage. There is no condenser or capacitor involved. The red wire is positive, the case is ground/negative.

If the light would turn a bit faster it would be more effective.

In fact it is going too fast to be most effective. Federal did many studies and determined the perfect human reaction timing to emergency lighting and it was designed into the earlier equipment as shown here in this linked video at bottom. Later as strobes were developed they had to go faster by design and were always an annoyance. Now leds have ability to slow and some designs do just that although the original importance of the cadence and the reasoning for it has been forgotten in time. ua-cam.com/video/_XuNmf6kkbE/v-deo.html

Turn the wrong way ? You have +to+ and ground to ground

Proper polarity was observed and the clockwise rotation is correct.
