So when Critical Role launched the Kickstarter to animate a show, it was for a single 22 minute animated short, with a couple of stretch goals for extras. They decided to ask for $750 000, and gave their backers 45 days to hit that target. Within an hour of launching they had $1m, and at the end of the first day $4m. By the time the Kickstarter ended, they had $11m. And now they have a three season deal with Amazon (and a possible five in total for Vox Machina), and a season dealing with the group's second campaign, the Mighty Nein. Not bad for a birthday present for Liam O'Brien!
Reminds me of the Avatar The Last Airbender roleplaying game. They were going for a 50K $ budget with their Kickstarter over thirty days. I found it halfway through day 2 and it had something like 620K. By the end they ended up with a Kickstarter of 9.5 MILLION $. And that is for a franchise that hasn't had a new series in over a decade.

Not *everything* has a roll for it, like the sandwich falling and stuff. The show definitely has some specific shots that were dice rolls, but a lot of it summarizes the overall events while maintaining the vibe of the original episodes thst were aired!! Its super cool how much it converts to animation. That being said, there's a lot of premade stories that make it really fun since it provides guiderails for the DM if they're not so familiar with stuff
Grog doesnt have anger issues, he has anger solutions. Also dont compare typical D&D sessions to matt mercer sessions, there are multiple voice actors who love making characters and voicing them, which is entertaining but sets a very high standard. As long as you're having fun with your group and you talk out how much rp you want vs gameplay mechanics you'll have fun and as you all get comfortable with it you'll get more in depth characters. Just dont expect critical roll levels of role play or you'll be disappointed
As an amateur dungeon master myself who's been trying to get her story to life, my best advice is learning the mechanics of dnd and then just jumping into it. You can always talk yourself out of an amazing experience, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with stumbling your way through things! It's how you learn!! If you guys DO start a campaign, you should also absolutely record it, too! Who knows, we might get another Critical Role!
Season 2s done, season 3 is in the works, and Amazon announced they signed them to also make a mighty nein show, mighty nein being the name of their second campaign which is my personal favorite
I doubt when Liam O'Brien suggested a streamed D&D game for his birthday with his friends that Critical Role would take off as massively as it did, and yet here we are. Vox Machina - the closest Latin can get to 'Voice Actor' and a more friendlier name than acronym name 'the s.h.i.ts' - in the show start off around the second arc of the first campaign, the Brimscythe stuff being an adventure prior to the streams. The main cast (well, all but one who was cut out of the story) all play as their roles, allowing the antagonists and NPCs to be played by others, and some pretty big names I mean David Tennant played Krieg/Brimscythe, which is still a strong cast of voice actors in its own right. Admittedly it is difficult to try and get up to speed with everything, so sometimes the easiest thing to do is to just jump in and then eventually things start making sense, playing probably takes a bit more dedication but Scanlan's player, Sam Riegel, was completely new to D&D when the streams started, in fact Scanlan's role as a gnome bard was suggested as one of 'the worst character to play as', but the show does help in that regard for the first campaign. A series of the second campaign, The Mighty Nein, is also in the works. The third campaign is still ongoing, but there were also some spinoff campaigns in between (mainly the EXU series) that tie in, and reunion one-shots of the campaign, so as long as it remains successful there will be much more to come.
There's so many fun little details in this show. For example a lot of the side characters that seem insignificant but have an impact on the story (like the guy hanging up the poster that inspires the group to go on the quest in the first place) are designed to look like Matt Mercer- the Gamemaster of Critical Role. The book in Gilmore's shop: Tusk Love, is actually a reference to the 2nd dnd campaign of CR, where the protagonists found that book and it became a running gag as they had a half-orc (with tusks) in the party. Sylas Briarwood is also voiced by Matt Mercer.
YESSS, so glad to see you guys reacting to this. This is my favorite IP. Youre gonna love the humor, world, and awesome storytelling from this. Welcome to the Critter community.
Haha you guys are in for a RIDE! This show goes all over the place and I LOVE IT! So glad to watch this with you. Was a trip the first time. Never gets boring.
The first two episodes were based on a side adventure from before they started streaming on Twitch. The overall plot had been Demons and Devils fighting in the capital of Emon, but they investigated the disappearance of Fince, and found Krieg's lair. Krieg/Brimscythe is an adult - a young adult - dragon. They get bigger. Now they are heading into a very beloved arc, so hang on for a helluva ride. And when you finish the season, you should check out the Legends of the Cast of the Legend of Vox Machina, and see just who they got to share the voicing duties. Getting David Freaking Tennant as Krieg is only the beginning.
I am so happy you guys are watching this absolutely amazing show! These two episodes are generally considered the weakest of the series and it just keeps getting better and better from here. Enjoy the ride!
15:30 That was the plan when Gilmore first showed up in the streams :'D but also, they really loved each other, Vax's and Gilmore's relationship in the campaign was such a heartwarming thing, they really confided in each other.
Oh hELL YES!! Love how you can sometimes see which choices are due to bad rolls, but also the story’s just straight fun. I am 100% right beside Eric in cackling manically Also R.I.P. editor for all the censorship 😂
DnD is mostly about having fun with friends, the most memorable moments you have aren't going to be the "Awesome setpieces" or "Adherance to the rules" It's all about collaborative storytelling and enjoying the time you have with one another, the rules are just there to facilitate that so never worry about the "Barrier to entry" It's a blast no matter who you're with or what you're doing.
Everyone gets so caught up with playing the game "the right way," that they forget it's just a game. If everyone is having fun, it doesn't matter if you're breaking the rules or messing things up. Just play however you want to play, and you can't be wrong.
i am so excited for y'all to get into this! while i haven't personally watched the first campaign, i am a HUGE mighty nein fan, which is also getting an animated adaptation!!
Guys i don't think you need to censor out cursing in these shows, unless UA-cam has some more stricter rules on speech now that i don't know of. Besides censorship is not cool at all. But i understand your doing it for protection of your channel.
Y'all are coming in at the right time considering that S3 has a good chance of coming out early next year. There is also another show in the works based around a separate campaign, "Mighty Nein."

I’m so happy you guys are watching this!!! I found this show only a few weeks ago. After I binged it I started watching Critical Role’s Campaign 1 (that this show is heavily based on). It’s so interesting seeing how things play out in the original campaign compared to the animated adaptation. It seriously doesn’t disappoint.
Just wait until you watch Mighty Nein. That campaign is my favorite. Bells Hells is great too because it pulls in story elements of the previous campaigns together. I hope they animate it as well, but they'd need to finish the story first.
Yes, Vax is bi and he and Gilmore have an on and off again relationship. Gilmore, however, is a strict professional. While he may give Vax preferential treatment and "special discounts" he is also careful to never cross any lines and give things away for free. It helps him feel that the relationships he has are real.
VOX MACHINA LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Started watching the stream this show is based on from basically the get go. My expectations were high, and the team blew me out of the water. Have Fun!!!
Oh yes! Strap in guys. Cause this series is absolutely WILD! So fun lil fact: When the cast initially pitched this show, it was only supposed to be a short 22 minute animated special. But after smashing the Kickstarter goals, we expanded it to a full animated series! This first 2 episodes are what that animated short was supposed to be. While the rest of the season is the Briarwood arc of the campaign (in my opinion, one of the BEST bit of the live stream!)
Honestly, I'm 45 seconds into the video, don't think those three reactions will be topped anytime soon. Edit: oh my god, there's going to be SOOO many dolphin noises this series.
For the record (in case you haven’t heard or read it yet), the first two episodes of this season were supposed to be a single movie back before a series was thought possible as it was to bring new critters up to speed about how Vox Machina came in before the original campaign really got going with the cast that’s still around. Thanks to one of the biggest kickstarter campaigns, however, they split the movie into two episodes to start the first seasons and are using the rest of this season to showcase the first main storyline of the Vox Machina campaign (and Seasons 2 and 3 are about the second main storyline).
love this show the guest voice actors that have been brought in including The Doctor himself David Tenant. waiting for S3 ive even gone and started watching their D&D Games that this has spawned from at Critical Role :D. what makes me laugh though is you "Flipper" their swearing but the swear word is on the screen
i'm not kidding, I know it's a GIANT amount of hours, but crit role is absolutely worth getting into! maybe even react to for the channel! each episode is about 4 hours long so it might be a hassle to turn it into a youtube video, but i would definetely watch it! i would watch if you streamed it as well! the reccomendation is to start at campaign 2 cause the very beginning of campaign one is messy (one player has to leave, there are audio issues and everyone agrees the story really starts at episode 28). but campaign two is tighter and they are a well oiled machine by then. please check it out!
Feel the need to mention during any door scene: locked doors are ESPECIALLY Critical Roll's worst enemies and hardest challenges. Any difficult door scene was basically ripped straight from their DnD sessions.
Oh I am back with you guys for this ride, especially after their reactions to the LOTR cannon fodder. And you don't need a perfect DM, you just need people you really enjoy being around. I've never had a Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan 'level' DM but I've had a lot of fun, even with the worst of the DM's I've had. It can be actively fun to learn the rules together.
You guys are right. You need a good DM to really make your experience a great memorable one. Thankfully Baldurs Gate 3 on PC/PS5 released. It's a great and faithful D&D experience and you don't need a DM! Such a great way to experience D&D
Honestly, there isn't one way to DM 'right'. The best DMs find out what kind of game their table wants to play, what genre, what themes, what kind of story their group wants to tell, or if they just wanna go kill a bunch of monsters and loot. And you can absolutely DM with little to no experience. So long as no one goes in expecting Critical Role levels of roleplay, props and storytelling, you can absolutely have a blast just following a pre written module or something.

I always find it funny that it is also the 5 colors of mana for "Magic: The Gathering", another successfull franchise of Wizards of the Coast. So whenever I see this dragon rug, I have to think of the mana wheeel.
Actually it's a reference to *spoilers*
Which is also a reference to the 5 Evil-aligned Chromatic Dragons
@@mariusroth4966 Red, green, blue, white, black. What unusual colors that rarely ever get used for anything. Truly this is the most remarkable of coincidences.
No connection to tiamat
Me: how many times am I gonna watch folks react to LOVM?
Also me: Yes.
Gotta keep that engagement up and support the show so we get all the seasons we need!!
Had to do so for a refresher for season 3
Not *everything* has a roll for it, like the sandwich falling and stuff. The show definitely has some specific shots that were dice rolls, but a lot of it summarizes the overall events while maintaining the vibe of the original episodes thst were aired!! Its super cool how much it converts to animation.
That being said, there's a lot of premade stories that make it really fun since it provides guiderails for the DM if they're not so familiar with stuff
Yall don’t roll for sandwich integrity?
Grog doesnt have anger issues, he has anger solutions. Also dont compare typical D&D sessions to matt mercer sessions, there are multiple voice actors who love making characters and voicing them, which is entertaining but sets a very high standard. As long as you're having fun with your group and you talk out how much rp you want vs gameplay mechanics you'll have fun and as you all get comfortable with it you'll get more in depth characters. Just dont expect critical roll levels of role play or you'll be disappointed
I love the "Oh we're getting right into it." followed seconds later by "Holy shit!" shock.
Also yes I would like to see a lord of the rings reaction.
The third campaign is still ongoing, but there were also some spinoff campaigns in between (mainly the EXU series) that tie in, and reunion one-shots of the campaign, so as long as it remains successful there will be much more to come.
they weren't streamed. it was just a home game. Taliesin wasn't even playing Percy and Ashley hadn't joined. but the rest of this is all correct
There's so many fun little details in this show. For example a lot of the side characters that seem insignificant but have an impact on the story (like the guy hanging up the poster that inspires the group to go on the quest in the first place) are designed to look like Matt Mercer- the Gamemaster of Critical Role.
The book in Gilmore's shop: Tusk Love,
is actually a reference to the 2nd dnd campaign of CR, where the protagonists found that book and it became a running gag as they had a half-orc (with tusks) in the party.
🎵Welcome to The Legend of Vox Machina!🎵
I can tell you you’re in for one hell of a time.👍
Side Note: Nice use of SpongeBob censoring.🐬
Season 2 of this show is Masterclass-level animation. From the visuals through to the acting and music. Simply amazing.
Glad to see others enjoying this! I'm jealous of you with the two great seasons to watch for the first time!
I am 100% right beside Eric in cackling manically
Also R.I.P. editor for all the censorship 😂
Glad you’re watching this now! You’re gonna love season 2!
Fun fact I like to post is Grog's huge burps are actually made by recording a mix of Laura's(Vex) and Marisha's(Keyleth) burps.
Bro it's so wild two see you guys react to this, it's like watching two different worlds collide lmao, super excited to see you guys watch this
DnD is mostly about having fun with friends, the most memorable moments you have aren't going to be the "Awesome setpieces" or "Adherance to the rules" It's all about collaborative storytelling and enjoying the time you have with one another, the rules are just there to facilitate that so never worry about the "Barrier to entry" It's a blast no matter who you're with or what you're doing.
Everyone gets so caught up with playing the game "the right way," that they forget it's just a game. If everyone is having fun, it doesn't matter if you're breaking the rules or messing things up. Just play however you want to play, and you can't be wrong.
Ngl, I really love this series, plus I think Scanlan is my most favorite vorite character in the show, especially his songs and sense of humor
Scanlan*
this whole video is just dolphin noises LMAO
i am so excited for y'all to get into this! while i haven't personally watched the first campaign, i am a HUGE mighty nein fan, which is also getting an animated adaptation!!
I wonder if they noticed David Tennant is in this?
Guys i don't think you need to censor out cursing in these shows, unless UA-cam has some more stricter rules on speech now that i don't know of. Besides censorship is not cool at all. But i understand your doing it for protection of your channel.
Y'all are coming in at the right time considering that S3 has a good chance of coming out early next year.
There is also another show in the works based around a separate campaign, "Mighty Nein."
Yeah, Im about 30 odd eps into the live show.
Everyone says that the driver at the end of episode 2 looks like ichobod crane. Its really funny how often reactors say that exact line.
I like the dolphin Spongebob noises censoring, but I think you should tone it down a little lol It gets repetitive after a while (but it is good imo).
I hope you will enjoy the show!
Not so sure the dolphin thing works at all. Annoying, repetitive, but also inconsistent. Worst of all possible worlds really.
@@PuffyCloud_aka_puffeclaude I don't think it's bad. If they will scatter it more throughout the video and not every bleep it would be fine.
@@Mettrop_2nd I quickly got over it, sure. It's already scattered a bit, tripled up in places, nonexistent in others. This show is going to be an ongoing issue with this, and I guess if you have to do it at all, a quick mute is probably more viewable to a wider audience.
Or switch it up a bit. Lots of sounds to choose from!
@@rekkariley652 perhaps something from the show, Trinket comes to mind.
The best part of this show is that it was just a kickstarter for a little episode or something… then the fanbase raised so many MILLIONS OF DOLLARS that they made a whole show!
Hard to believe they got the million they needed in less than two hours
@@SilverScribe85 bro it was like walking into a millennial class room and singing “I wanna be the very best” and waiting to see how many people finished it.
@@fobbles_ I don't quite understand that analogy
im so glad you guys started this
also none of this show will be monetized so theres no use in you using the annoying dolphin xD
also yall missed a few times grog said fuck lmaooo
I’m so happy you guys are watching this!!! I found this show only a few weeks ago. After I binged it I started watching Critical Role’s Campaign 1 (that this show is heavily based on). It’s so interesting seeing how things play out in the original campaign compared to the animated adaptation. It seriously doesn’t disappoint.
HELL YES! You're going to love this. So happy to see this reaction when I opened youtube.
S3 is out, can't wait to see y'all react to it!!!
I don’t know if I’ve ever been more excited for a show reaction from you guys than now
Its a shame one of you hasnt seen LotR since the party that gets gibbed at the start of this is meant to resemble the fellowship afaik
Brimscythe is actually only between juvenile and adult. Dragons only get more powerful as they age.
Oh man, y'all ain't ready for Season 2 :)
VOX MACHINA
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Started watching the stream this show is based on from basically the get go. My expectations were high, and the team blew me out of the water. Have Fun!!!
0:25 "We're just getting right into it."
*Literally seconds later* HOLY SHIT!!!!
Me: I just LOVE that reaction. It's the best
I love seeing more people watch my favorite series but I feel like it's being done a disservice with dolphin noises every three seconds XD
I’ve rewatched this a lot, one of my favorite animated series. I watched all 460 hours of the campaign this story is based on
AYYYYYYY im so happy you are reacting to this. It's great.
Oh hell yeah, some of my favorite reactors doing one of my favorite shows. Looking forward to this!
Lmao, Boom saying the exact same lines during the first scene 😂
YOOOO VOX MACHINA LETS GO it's so good
Facts
For the record (in case you haven’t heard or read it yet), the first two episodes of this season were supposed to be a single movie back before a series was thought possible as it was to bring new critters up to speed about how Vox Machina came in before the original campaign really got going with the cast that’s still around. Thanks to one of the biggest kickstarter campaigns, however, they split the movie into two episodes to start the first seasons and are using the rest of this season to showcase the first main storyline of the Vox Machina campaign (and Seasons 2 and 3 are about the second main storyline).
Also, Ashley Johnson and Khary Payton from Teen Titans (Terra and Cyborg) are on the show.
You mean ELLIE, killer of Infected!
@@JnEricsonx who?
@@Samgreen90 Ashley Johnson, Pike, voices Ellie in The Last of Us games. Khary Payton has shown up on Critical Role as well.
@@JnEricsonx never played it, never saw it, didn't know about it.
@@Samgreen90 Epic games.
I love how they said invincible level violence 😂😂😂
Y’all might want to make the censor quieter in a show like this, you’ll be using it a lot
Yooooo you guys are gonna enjoy the ride!!!
8:40: "A fricking dragon." Oh please.....the shit they've faced.....and in the animated show, WILL FACE.
YEEEESSS this is gonna be so hype. i was hoping yall would react to this someday omg
I fucking LOVE this show, so hype you guys are checking it out!
There’s gonna be a whole flock of dolphins if you guys wanna keep this clean…
I’m so excited for you guys to see this series. It’s so goooood
I've been waiting for this ever since you mentioned it at the end of Invincible
love this show the guest voice actors that have been brought in including The Doctor himself David Tenant. waiting for S3 ive even gone and started watching their D&D Games that this has spawned from at Critical Role :D. what makes me laugh though is you "Flipper" their swearing but the swear word is on the screen
i'm not kidding, I know it's a GIANT amount of hours, but crit role is absolutely worth getting into! maybe even react to for the channel! each episode is about 4 hours long so it might be a hassle to turn it into a youtube video, but i would definetely watch it! i would watch if you streamed it as well!
the reccomendation is to start at campaign 2 cause the very beginning of campaign one is messy (one player has to leave, there are audio issues and everyone agrees the story really starts at episode 28). but campaign two is tighter and they are a well oiled machine by then. please check it out!
God your reaction to the opening scene was fucking HILARIOUS! Just the pure shock.
Hell fucking yesssss I have been hoping and waiting!!!!!!!
you can telll the jokes are good because they each laugh to the jokes one by one haha
OMG IM SO HAPPY UR WATCHING THIS, THIS IS SO UR STYLE AND UR GONNA LOVE IT
I hear we hit the sailor talk episode of Spongebob.
Gunter's "weh" from Adventure Time is also a go-to.
The guy that Scanlan peed on in ep 1 was voiced by and drawn in the likeness of their DM Matt Mercer.
Greatest show can't wait till the next season comes out
Feel the need to mention during any door scene: locked doors are ESPECIALLY Critical Roll's worst enemies and hardest challenges. Any difficult door scene was basically ripped straight from their DnD sessions.
i never knew i need u to react to this until right now and im so glad it exists
VOX MACHINA LETS FUCKING GOOOO
Heck ya
I’m so excited to see you guys react to this!
I absolutely adore this show, I am glad you enjoy it! Can´t wait for more!
Yes! You’ll thoroughly enjoy this show. It’s just gets better as it goes
Get ready for D&D, The Boys Edition!
And holy $*@+ you guys are in for a good time!!!!!
I didn't know dolphins are secretly communicating in open channels to conquer the planet
yall had some good insight rolls there ! 😆
Yes! I knew youguys woud love this series! So excited for youtosee the rest of it
You guys are right. You need a good DM to really make your experience a great memorable one. Thankfully Baldurs Gate 3 on PC/PS5 released. It's a great and faithful D&D experience and you don't need a DM! Such a great way to experience D&D
This series is sooo Good!
Facts
We can still hear the original curse on about half, but adding in the SpongeBob dolphin curse noise is great, lol!
6:46 no that’s just lightning
Please continue this it is so good. And this is just the juicy beginning ❤
ahhh yess i love this series i've been waiting for you guys to react to it!
They are gonna dig this show, it's freakin epic as hell. Can't wait for more.
