You purchased the catalytic converter from parts geek ?
I have a Ford fusion 2011 SEL my catalytic converter is bad and I'm trying to replace I don't know much about cars is this something that can be done on my car type or do I have to take to muffler shop to be welded on.
Scotty Kilmer
any links on amazon to the clothes your were wearing?
Will it cause high RPM if it is clogged?
This guy just saved me 15% or more on car insurance in less than 15 minutes
damn it!
And it was so easy...
A caveman could’ve done it:)
Lmfao
😂😂
You know, 3min is also lower than 10 as also 5mins.. I guess you didnt mean exact time.. just sayin lol
Hey Scotty, Just changed my Cat after watching your video. Thanks so much for giving me the confidence to try my own repair! I have a 96 Toyota Tacoma and it had a rattle sound when it was in Drive, but would go away in Neutral. The dealership said they thought it was the Cat but they didn't make the part anymore. They said to try a muffler shop so I started looking online and found your video. Being in California didn't help because of the C.A.R.B. restrictions. Eventually I found a Magnaflow direct fit California compliant Cat at O'reilly Auto Parts. Thirty minutes and your video got the job done! It's running so quiet now, it's like I'm driving a hybrid! Time to rev up my engine! Thanks again!!!
"with a little wiggling, maybe a little swearing"
I lost it
I was dying when he said that lol
I know nothing about cars but I'm sure learning a lot from your channel! Funny, I have a family full of "mechanics" and nobody ever wanted to teach me anything. I've learned more in a week from you about cars than a lifetime with them. Thanks Scotty!
You've got to ask your family questions
@@michaelculhane3058 I'm sure he tried that already dude lol
As I’ve learned from asking people for help on my square body on Facebook, nobody wants to help they just want a god complex.
@@michaelculhane3058 people would rather spend 5 hours belittling you for not knowing instead of 5 minutes to show you something.
@@Alr1ghtyThen ain't that the truth
I was told replacing a catalytic converter is a $1000 fix at mechanic's shop (including parts). This doesnt seem like a $1000 worth of work. Damn mechanics are crooks. Looks like it's time to change this sucker myself.
Aysar Aburrub it depends if it's welded on or not bro
You could buy a catalytic converter here. Good price and nice product. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=srs%3D12733284011%26search-alias%3Dspecialty-aps&field-keywords=Catalytic+Converter
Aysar Aburrub they told me $2000 on my Lexus, meanwhile the catalytic converter costs only $60. So I guess $1940 for labor?! 🤔🧐😏.....not this sister!!
Yeah I had a bmw for my first car and the mechanic told me $500 for a brake change. Just the pads, mind you. That’s when I bought my first tool box.
A lot of it can depend on what car you have, what converter you need, and the general cost of production in the state that you live in. A lot of places will you give you different prices too depending on what they specialize in. My personal mechanic who does general car maintenance (I've had him do all the work on my car) and he told me about $500 to change the catalytic converter, but I called a muffler and exhaust specialist and he quoted me at about $200-300. Just ask around and you might find some good prices. But ya, this isn't typically an awful change unless you're having to take out one that is welded in or put one in that needs to be welded.
You're one of my heroes, sir. Please keep doing what you're doing. Thank you very much! Hooah!
Just a tip from when I replaced mine on my 91 accord. If the bolts or nuts are too rusty and wont come off. Just take an angle grinder and cut the nut off from the cat side. Even if you cut into the flange a bit. You only cutting into the part your throwing away anyway!
I love this channel. I could watch these videos for hours.
Thank you Scottie for the temperature gun idea. Ive been chasing a P0430 code on my 98 Sierra 5.7 for months. I tried every Voodoo/snake oil idea out there and I have to tell you they are all a waste of time and money, at least in my case. The temperature of my cat was the same at both ends so I finally resigned myself to pulling it out to take a look. The honeycomb inside was 90% missing so it was having no effect. Thinking back, months before, I had a bad misfire problem that I was caused by a cracked distributor cap. I guess all that backfiring blew the cat right out.
I think we all watch these videos wishing for a cheap or free solution but sometimes you got to get dirty and spend money.
I enjoy your show! I’m much less stressed trying to fix my junker than I was before. Appreciate the tips!
Love your vid's Scotty, might want to tell people after the new cat is installed to start your car and let it warm up to operating temp and shut off car to let interior parts to expand and seat properly. If you just drive it right away this vibration will cause improper seating of honeycomb. Thanks Scott.
been watching videos by this bloke for 25 years. he's still got it.
I wish I seen this last week before I got mine fix .. I paid $175 .. Great Vid Scotty
Bubba WT85 that’s a great price to pay if that was the total including labor. I mean that’s about the price for a cheap cat without doing all the dirty work
I love the all inclusive list for why you might need to replace a catalytic converter at the top of this video
When I'm confused and looking for someone legit that knows what they are talking about this guy Scott always pops up and this guy is always very helpful.....keep making a difference Scott 💯 💶 💯
Scotty I just have to share with you this story regarding a 2001 Subaru Forester I was literally given by someone I barely knew. Subaru owner's are the lucky few who's car's CATs don't cost very much $270 on Amazon. But I also suggest you also purchase the two O2 sensors with it because you will absolutely need them (they average $50 a piece ON AMAZON), why? Because like the exhaust bolts they may have welded themselves to the pipe and why take a chance you still pull a code after you get everything back together. I brought all of my parts down to Bucky's, got a quote for $150 for the install and sat there for about an hour while they installed it. You may pay $200 for the install if they can't get the old bolts off either as they may have to cut and weld on a new flange. Always order your parts from amazon folks and avoid the markup at the repair shop and at the parts store. This cat was 2x the price at Autozone.
I have never owned a Subaru. This car (no dents, interior just needed cleaning, wouldn't pass emissions and had very little power) was actually given to me by a lady who didn't want to deal with it because her mechanic told her it was gonna be $2400 to fix it. So instead she bought a new car. Two weeks later after researching vids on Utube here is what needed fixing (I did everything myself except CAT install and yes I tried the gallon of laquer thinner);
1. Replaced knock sensor. (pulled a code regarding this with my trusty Harbor Freight scan tool.) Super easy and only $10 on amazon.
2. Changed spark plugs and wires. (It still puttered a bit after new CATs) She runs quieter than a mouse on cotton now.
3. Changed air filter. It was caked.
4. Sprayed a whole can of sensor safe intake cleaner down the carb. This did a great deal too.
5. Lastly, I changed the oil, inspected and topped off the tranny fluid plus changed the differential fluid.
It seemed to me that the car at 255,000 miles had not been serviced properly and the nice lady who gave it to me just drove it and didn't do the maintenance on it. Eventually she got overwhelmed with all of the very easy to fix problems (except the CAT which were it not for rusted bolts would be a breeze too) that she gave up on it. Deal of the century my friends. This don't happen often. In the end, for about $700 this Subaru is back to normal, and it could come at a better time. My son is 17 and I was wondering where I was gonna get the cash to get him a safe car. Woo Hoo! I wish I could have had a mint Subaru Forester for my first vehicle. Love, Peace & Hair Grease!
Haven't been watching for a while, but well done Scotty, I saw that jack stand. Nice to see you weren't just using the hydraulic jack alone. Jack Stands.... been saving lives, since ages ago.... :)
scotty you are the best thank you so much to take you time and put some videos xoxo
Stumbled across your videos this past weekend and thought 'Where has Scotty Kilmer been all my life' you're like the Mega Millions ticket for car savings!
Hey Scotty, you should make a video about your opinions on tuning and modifying cars.
Depending on the fit and version, this should be fine. However, some cars have 2 converters or one is part of the headers like mine was. Also, if you get leaks, replace the gaskets at both ends, I also use exhaust sealint for some of those not so nice jobs.
Why on earth wouldn't they use stainless steel nuts and bolts. Sure, may cost more but the headache you can have with those from the winter salt baths some areas get it would sure be nice. I've done those rusty ones before and have had to torch them off and replace after or twist until they snap off.
He the best teacher I ever had
Thank you so much! I just bought a car and the engine light went on and this is why.
I appreciate the tip about the infrared thermometer saved me a bunch of money
+Megan Torres How did you use it ?
Toyota4Life for my catalytic converter I have 2 and there both over 1000$ so I was able to pin point the problem asap
I always check your videos all the time and all of them are good but this one saved me a ton of $$ on my 1993 camaro catalytic converte i replaced it myself because of you thank you for the good video.
Up here in the north those bolts would be rusted out completely. No way to get a socket on it, let alone break it loose without heat.
Oh yeah, you betcha, i wanted to run a straight pipe thru the cats, i dont think thats gonna happen.
anti0918 As someone who just snapped off a spring bolt on a honda civic exhaust in a warm state with no road salt, I bestow on you a thumbs up. Had to bring the car to a muffler shop to extract the busted screw.
anti0918
I was just going to say in MI you will never be able to do this yourself ! The heads on the bolts seem to be gone in the first 7 years.Hell in 17 years you will have no exhaust to take apart.
pontiachotshot We have a 16 year old Accord in NE Ohio with an exhaust that's more patchwork than original.
anti0918 i was thinking the same, absolutely no way any of that is coming out with hand tools in your driveway in the north. Cut it out and weld in a cheap universal at a shop. Also wd-40? cmon scotty that's not a penetrating fluid at all might as well use water
Scotty, you are the man! You’re a strong UA-camr dude - than you for passing on your wisdom to me. I need a catalytic converter for my 2004 Matrix - what part manufacturer do you recommend?
Thanks Scotty, that'll save me money. I'll save even more when I scrap out my old one. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to find an almost new one at a wrecking yard. You're the best.
I cant thank you enough for your videos!!! I'm writing everything down. What a wealth of information you give👏❤
For a 2004 Accord, I tried soaking the cat overnight in
soapy water and then rinsing well (very well) at first did not seem to
do the trick. Put the cat back on and shortly threw another CEL code.
HOWEVER, I reset the CEL and it never tripped again (not for a few
months anyway). I thoroughly recommend soaking in detergent overnight,
rinsing well, and re-installing. It worked for me.
Because of this I looked up walker cats and they make them for both my STI and Outback. Good to know as they're both older cars. STI also needs an OEM cat to pass emissions if this HFC doesn't work out.
In California or the USSA whichever way you see it. They made it so you can't remove the Cat converter except by cutting it and welding it unless you remove the whole exhuast system, and good luck finding an aftermarket one that's legal.
Lmao shut up it’s not illegal in most states cali yes and all cats are bolted unless welding the owner
Love your teaching dude. You' re a four king genius.
Awesome video Scotty! Thank you for posting! I changed my O2 sensors on my car with 225k miles, but that didn't dot eh trick, so my next project will be the cat itself! Thank you for giving me a good idea how its done! Cheers!
Thanks for this vid Scotty, i should have subscribed after I found your vid on changing a blower motor. Simple, no bs, and informative. I LOVE that about your channel.
Why on earth wouldn't they use stainless steel nuts and bolts. Sure, may cost more but the headache you can have with those from the winter salt baths some areas get it would sure be nice. I've done those rusty ones before and have had to torch them off and replace after or twist until they snap off. 😀
well here in Texas we don't have to worry about applying heat cause its already hotter than hell outside lol
BILLSTMAXX :) Mostly due to cost, stainless nuts/bolts cost more, imagine that times millions of vehicles. Generally any exhuast work in the great salt belt will require breaking out the torch.
Steve Lee Wouldn't there also be issues with galvanic corrosion if you have dissimilar metals in contact?
i havent done car parts but i have tried to get rusty bolts off of a/c's and other things i have scrapped for cash. yes why dont they use stainless it would save us lots of trouble.
I'd pay an extra $50 on my vehicle for all the bolts to be stainless. Lol
pb blaster is the best stuff for bolts like this, my opinion of course, love your videos
Oh wow, thanks alot! Straight to the point with brief explanations thank u!
Wow. Well you just answered my question. My Volkswagen Jetta is burning so much oil so fast and I can't figure out why. But now I know why I need a new catalytic converter
Mechanic was trying to charge 800 for just the part plus labor . Second mechanic wanted 450 . Good thing i found this video.
Thank you for posting this Mr. Kilmer! Very helpful!
Thanks so much man. I was about to go to a mechanic but this looks easy enough for even me to fix.
Ophielle two years later, how did that work out!?
Awesome vid. I like that we see the whole process.
i watched a few videos, people like talking a lot of smack.
Say what ya want....I kinda like this guy!
keep up the work !!
Were you really working on that fire truck? You help a lot of people, thank you!
Viktor Viktor I fix all kinds of stuff, a true renaissance man
Scotty Kilmer It's funny that you made a video there saying "and I'll answer them as soon as I'm done fixing this fire truck!" I guess you do that all the time.
This was the most interesting "guy stuff" video I have ever seen! Good stuff though, I think mine just went up.
Yes the bolts just come out like that in all your vidoes.Well Scott it all depends were you live and some parts rust realy bad.Well WD40 can and maybe helps out.I had to cut the tie rod ends out and the bolts for the cat ect the same as all plus torch(I worked in auto for years and an auto rebuilder)and well learnt that I would never buy an old Benz or Bmw ect.(Well my boss use to say do you see any employees driving cars like that and there was a reason)Fords,Chev Ect.,I live in Southern Ontario Canada.I have a 2006 Uplander with 160tkms and cheap on parts.I do like your vidoes though.Keep up the good work!
It’s tradition to start up the car at least once when removing a cat.
Why?? Will it be loud? I’m guessing smoky? Lol
There used to be a test-tube you could get from a racing magazine. Hollow tube takes the place of the catalytic.
Yea, no doubt AvE! When you need to know something about anything with our cars, Scotty is about the best there is! I wish he lived in our neighborhood!! How sweet would that be! And sometimes its just freakin gut bustin, cant stop laughing, funny as hell when he's explaining crap that some of these car company builders over engineer, under engineer or simply do some boneheaded crap to their cars. Car companies sometimes do some things just down right stupid to their vehicles, and Scotty can find it. If he does, look out cuz Scotty might just call em out and when that happens, you'll find yourself sometimes on the floor laughing for hours!
When it comes to replacing a catalytic converter is it best to use an oem part or can I use a aftermarket part and my car will still run good? And which aftermarket part would be best?
Toyota RAV4 2003
I had a little worse time with those bolts! My '85 Ford's exhaust system is completly rusted. I broke the bolt right off. In the process of removing the other side bolt, the wrench slipped and I put a hole in the exhaust pipe. I decided I will cut the whole thing off and replace it all with some standard steel pipe and a universal muffler.
that's the easiest catalytic converter replacement I've ever seen. I wish they were all like this. Mine is way up in the engine bay and the other end has to be cut off the exhaust pipe - no nice bolt-on.
Now watch after I bust my hump changing out this cat it'll be the muffler that's clogged. Because my issue is zero power. Used to be just with hills then all the time.
Good video...short and to the point. But you forgot to mention the o2 sensor. How to remove it and then reAttach it. Or if your doing a bypass, to get a bung vla
Scotty!!!! Very cool Vette!!!
This is a great video. I love the production work and direction.
here where i live no on would replace a cat, everyone cuts them out and craps them, because you can pass MOT here (Latvia) without a cat.
TheRealDeal My mechanic is so busy with MOTs he sometimes gets mixed up on what cars exhaust to put the test probe into ;) . Turns out my decat Volvo 850 is no more harmful to the enviroment than a Ford Fiesta strange ey.
I guess where you live you can get MOT done in any certified garage, but in Latvia the greedy government only allows it to be done in the Road traffic safety administration, the place where register your car an so on, if they would allow repair shops to do these things they would lose a nice amount of money. so we can not ''accidentally'' put the probe in the wrong exhaust. XD
When you live in California and can't get aftermarket cats 🙃
RZamp 21 yea i seen that when i ordered mines that in NY and CA you can't purchase it.. why us that?
go to muffler shop
Flow master sells em
CALIFORNIA IS AMAZING.
For most cars they're available, but they cost a lot more.
you're a bad ass scotty, i love your channel.
Thank you for the video Scotty! 😀
Why on earth wouldn't they use stainless steel nuts and bolts. Sure, may cost more but the headache you can have with those from the winter salt baths some areas get it would sure be nice. I've done those rusty ones before and have had to torch them off and replace after or twist until they snap off.
BILLSTMAXX :) Because stainless steel hardware on stainless steel hardware will sieze very quickly due to galling. oftentimes you will break the fastener or your wrench before you will free the nut. that is the threads on the bolt would have permantly welded themselves to the nut at every point of contact.
We recently replaced the catalytic converter on our vehicle. But now it sounds weird, it doesn't sound as quiet as the OEM one. But the performance has been amazing. Any tips? And the catalytic converter was welded, not bolted.
Good to know for when the time comes,Thanks Scotty
“ often they’re just burned out and you need a new o”*cuts out *
Classic Scotty editing 😂
Whoa. Scotty put some effort into this one.
WD-40 is not a penetrating oil....
Steven Marsden Technically you are correct, but plain old WD40 does work pretty well overnight and many people use it for that purpose. If you want a version that works in minutes, there is a special WD40 formula called Rust Release Penetratant Spray.
darkwood777 And if you want a penetrating oil that works better than any in the store, mix transmission fluid with acetone 50/50 and put it in a spray bottle.
anti0918 Why bother? The stuff you buy works fine.
darkwood777 Not for really stuck bolts, penetrating oil doesn't do much. Instead of buying a torch kit you can try acetone/ATF and see if that works.
anti0918 That doesn't make any sense. You say premixed penetrating oil doesn't work, but then you say to mix your own??? You have the hassle of buying 2 separate things, measuring, buying a safe container to store it... It just makes no sense. Buy the premixed stuff which is a lot safer. If it doesn't work, use a nut-buster or a torch.
I fixed my catalytic converter. Is was plugged, a metal fence post did the trick. Put one end on the top of post and start banging until you through. Rattle out the pieces and never worry about it again.
Thanks for the help, and I’ll use the WD-40 overnight.
How did it go?
Hey Scotty, the emissions get worse with universal catalytic converter? Mine is broken, I hear bad noises, it s a Peugeot Partner 2005 1.4 gasoline. Thank you!
Hi Scotty I was wondering if the back of the new cat isn't sealed properly (back flange leaking air) will the car run like it still has a clogged cat?
that would effect air fuel ratio of the sensor and make the car run poorly too
Scotty Kilmer thank you Scotty. I put a walker cat on my 06 Nissan xterra and that's the problem I am having. Replaced spark plugs too and I felt some air coming from the flange. won't go past 40 mph. Jerky a lot too.
Thanks Scotty for a lifetime of skills
I love your channel!! This is the bet video yet! But Share with us"what's your take on the Catalytic converter Thief Epidemic?"
I love your energy. You seem so happy XD
Use PB blaster, not WD-40. I had to use my impact gun to loosen few bolts that couldn't be loosened with the breaker bar. Make sure to replace gaskets too!
Is there a gasket that you need to replace too?
SCOTTY YOU ARE SIMPLY AMAZING !!!!! Thank you!!!
Hello Scotty, congrats on the success of your videos. Question... Do you have to change the entire piece of catalytic converter? Or can I just change the piece itself like you did? I have Dodge Neon 2005. I thank you ahead
usually those bolts don't come off easy like that... A couple of weeks ago I broke 8 of them off.
Wow that looked so easy! I'm gonna give it a try on my 02 toyota corolla ce
This video was stuck in my head the whole time I was replacing my cat. "And start pulling like mad"
I had to fit a new cat every year as it failed the UK MOT . (Mazda MX5 Mk2) When diagnosed, the problem was caused by a faulty electronic part that had broken down, once called a 'distributor'. Now called a power module.
***** ' o ' that's it?
What about new cars that have more then 1 or some even have 4 converters, and then they are part of the exhaust that can not be just " unbolted". Not all of them are this easy to change sadly. Ones I've seen are welded to the exhaust pipes and then requires an expensive repair.
stay cool Scotty. That triple digit weather is no ones friend
Kevin Rodriguez BIG FANS work fine, as long as you stay close to them
Nice vid scotty defenitely going with a bolt on cat for my honda thanx
He made this seem so easy!
You're the man Scotty!
If a crackhead can take it off, surly we can install one ourselves
if im not mistaken. does it mess up when the car goes rich. due to large amounts of excess gas going to the catalytic converter causing it to overheat
Wow thats easy!!!!!!!!!! Man they wanted 700 to replace mine! Guess im gonna attempt it myself
I loved this video! Great instructor and entertaining.
Love you Scotty! Thanks for the video!!
Thanks mate, great clip, really appreciate it ....
Love your videos Scotty
Corroded? Scotty those bolts look nearly brand new. Anywhere other than the desert SW you'd be cutting those things out.
So you also do repairs on big trucks like fire trucks ? Do you also repair contruction equipment or small engines ?
You are a rock star brother
Will the walker fit in a 2004 Acura TSX thanks for the help
Excelente vídeo! Thank you.
