  • After Munster's performance in Loftus, can their win over the Bulls be the catalyst for a URC defence and what about the difference RG Snyman makes?
Cian Tracey and Luke Fitzgerald join Rúaidhrí O’Connor on this week’s Left Wing podcast to discuss all the big talking points for Irish rugby from the weekend.
After Leinster’s uncharacteristic loss to Lions are they repeating past mistakes as the coaches fly home to prep for Saints?
There’s also been a lot of talk about central contracts and the panel asks is the model working and does it need tweaking or wholesale change?
Plus, selling out Croke Park - what it means for Leinster, Irish rugby and what it's like to play in.

Hi lads. I would like to formally apologise to Luke Fitzgerald. I skipped the podcast a good few times because I made assumptions about his punditry. I was wrong. He's actually really good to listen to and the others to. It's become a rugby pod I won't miss. Great work, and I hope you all keep going. Die hard Munster fan who's become a fan of Luke Fitzgerald... what's going on it the world! Although Lukes pronunciation of Jack Crowleys surname needs work, it makes me laugh. Crowe Lee, it's Crowley 😂

Luke is a brilliant pundit, but yes he bizarrely pronounces Crowley wrong.

Haha, Leinster lad here and I'm also surprised by how much I'm enjoying LF (but maybe it's because he said everything I was already thinking). Not many pundits, so shortly after their playing career, would describe themselves as naive. But he seems to have the humility and self-awareness to make rugby punditry interesting.

But he never seems to address the first Leinster team would never have won the HEC without Elsom, Nacewa, and CJ. Later years he benefited from Hines, Thorn, VDM etc

That Leinster side had a number of first-teamers or first team-adjacent guys, and was far stronger than the side that won the same fixture 12 months ago. They were just cack on the day, plus the Lions were extremely good. Nothing wrong with a good kick up the orse every so often, it helps dispel the hype and complacency that has dogged past Leinster teams.

You'd swear Doug Howlett, Rua Tipoki, Lafemi Mafi, De Allende, Kleyn (I could go on) never played for Munster. Convenient memories.

Leinster have unbelievable talent pool but in my opinion lack the depth of previous seasons. The squad rotation policy seems to have had an adverse effect on academy player development with the odd exception. I would like to see the senior players rested at different times instead of altogether with the second string and younger players getting chances to mix with the senior squad in matches through the season as opposed to just in training. Should help bring their standard up closer to what is required for Leinster to fight in both competitions. They had the depth years ago but have let that slip as exposed in the URC semi final last year. There has to be a better balance between what Andy Farrell chose to do in the World Cup v the recent Leinster policy of an an and b team in different games. The coaches should be in a position where team selection is a headache for them based on the form of the squad. Will be at Croker giving them my support along with a few others…

I cant think of any other player who was injured as much as Snyman has been and still made such a huge impact in the few games he's played. He's just a great player when he is on the field. I think Leinster have placed a good bet on him being fit for the important games.

Snyman to Leinster makes perfect sense. Nienabar/Bomb Squad. Snyman has a history with injuries. At Leinster he doesn't need to put in 60 minute shifts. 20 minutes off the bench Saffa style.

He changed his tune. He was biased in his Leinster reportage up to the end of last season. He got criticized for that on OTB. Same happened to Jackman when he started out. Loved riling Munster. Look, it is pretty obvious what's happening. You have to pander to Munster fans especially and Cork people in general. RoC, like Jackman before, knows that if you want to earn extra wedge from other pods, you don't annoy Munster fans

If Luke doesn’t want any NIQ players at Leinster, then he should be prepared to not win European cups. Each year the French clubs bring in guys NIQ to make a difference and Leinster will fall behind if they don’t, because academy players need time to become top players

    • @PB22559
      @PB22559 5 місяців тому

The French need to bring in players because they have 14 pro sides. The saffa sides are competing well and they dont 'bring in guys' from abroad. Give it a few years and sides like the Stormers, bulls and sharks will be serious contenders to win champions cups (without the need for foreign signings).

@@eoinh3816 The NZ sides dont bring in foreigners either and they have a similar population to Ireland. The Crusaders were arguably the best club side in the world for a long time and they had all home grown talent.
Next you'll be telling me about the GAA excuse and that rugby isn't the first sport in Ireland. No one cares about excuses, you're either good enough or you're not.
Look at the talent Fiji produce with a far smaller population than Ireland have.
