These are extremely helpful. I live in a area without a shotokan dojo, and your commentaries provide excellent technical guidance that I would otherwise miss. Between you, old JKA videos and Rick Hotton's training videos, I'm set. Thanks for all your work!
Great explanation, i will download it in case it goes offline.. in my years this was the first kata ive learned with hangetsu dachi.. the hard point is that.. the mind goes to zenkutsu or moto dachi every time...
Fantastic! As always, it is the best detailed explanation of a Kata. I have always wanted to understand how was breathing in this Kata. Now I know. Thank you very much, Sensei Paul Walker.
I've trained in Song Moo Kwan Tae Kwon Do for 48 years now and we do this kata as well. Song Moo Kwan is a direct offshoot of Shotokan as Byung-Jick Ro, the founder of SMK, trained under Gichin Funakoshi. We call it Bahn Wall which means Half Moon also. I always find it fascinating how styles develop a kata to fit their philosophy. Here is the SMK version. ua-cam.com/video/eyPMBdJAcFE/v-deo.html
Thanks you shotokan senseï. I begin to learn this kata with your video and after i will work it with my sensei to adjust detail specificities for my federation criteria...
Excellent teaching, instructional video. The audio however echoes a lot, which affects delivery somewhat. Wonder if can be cleared up, or overdubbed... Wonderful demo and explanation of background and technicalities.
Great kata, but if i may say so: In my opinion you should, after having explained the kata, show it in full speed, so that it's possible to see how it is really made.
I learn from Shotokan Sensei then watch Sensei Kanazawa videos then watch competition video so you can judge the speed of the kata and how it should be done.
My favorite internet Sensei is back! It was hard to recognize you from the distant camera and different setting from the previous Heian katas! Looks like you changed locations from a gym to the dojo?
Did you know that a JKA black belt is accepted as a first degree in most USA universities , so you could go straight to a masters degree without a first degree, well done an incredible achievement Mark
Great! Thank you. Can you please tell me the purpose of the double phoenix eye punch? Is it a strike (double punch) or are you breaking a hold on your arms? Thanks
Mine was fuku then but in the Isshinryu system sees an is the first kata but each. Style does it. Differently some styles add Kicks punches etc The style I like Left stance left cross hand open block then left hand push block going in opposite direction across chest. Then right punch ,left punch ,right. Punch then left punch Then. Right. Punch then step right. Stance it goes on
Looks like SKIF for sure (clearly, your do-gi says it too)! JKA and ISKF do it a bit differently. It's nteresting to see how different head instructors have different slight variations on the same kata. I see a lot of Kanazawa sensei there. :)
A warm thank for this very helpful lesson. The best I have seen while surfing in search of hangetsu breathing tutorials. One question please: many other sensei examples perform the last move (teisho awase gedan-barai?) on the straight/front line (example of H.T. Kanazawa: ua-cam.com/video/FoQk41O_49c/v-deo.html) whereas you suggest keeping doing it at 45° angle. What is the correct way please ?
Hello; what are you talking about? First; you do not need to "know" Hangetsu to pass any grade. Then, if you are more than Sandan (where you are free to choose what Kata to perform) seems that you never understood the basics. Better to not do exams and understand correctly what is Karate.
Video is not clear to learn kata video clearity is important can you please apload again these kata I am learning now these kata I learn many things from you so indirectly your my master
One of my favorite Kata, Sadly its not a winning Kata in Shotokan tournaments because everybody and his mother would go with a more complicated Kata like Unsu or Kanko Sho

Always find a way. I salute your determination. That's the way to do it!
Thank you for this. I'm over 60 years and forgot much of the details.
Great explanation, i will download it in case it goes offline.. in my years this was the first kata ive learned with hangetsu dachi.. the hard point is that.. the mind goes to zenkutsu or moto dachi every time...
Thank you for sharing your clear explanation and demonstration. This kata has a very different feel from most in the Shotokan canon.
Incredible talent, very natural teaching style and kind + polite voice tone, all I can say is thank you for your time Mark Chapman
I practice sanshin and tensho everyday.....so learning this lovely kata was a natural progression......especially with this excellent instruction

Seisan. One of the most classic katas in all of karate. Found in many styles.

I would be your first student once you come to open your karate school in our country.
Thanks for this .. I wish to add Bonkai Kata

If you don’t mind me asking are you SKIF or JKA affiliated? Just in terms of the details of the kata....
Great
your japanese pronunciation is very good. Have you been in japan?
As I understand it Sensei Paul Walker did indeed train in Japan with Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. He even wrote a book about it, Lessons with the Master.
A warm thank for this very helpful lesson. The best I have seen while surfing in search of hangetsu breathing tutorials.
