Great video as always. I still stand on my old LG v40, which I used to shoot a film during the pandemic that became an award-winning film. I didn't use any additional apps, just what the LG gave me, but the biggest thing was a clip-on ND filter. That was the huge difference, and then using my instincts with regards to light. At the time, that was my first foray into filmmaking, and so looking back I know I could have made it even better, but there's something magical about that film. I'm working with Cinema cameras now, but I still think that first film was very special work, and doing it had me learn more over 2 years than I had learned in my entire life combined. I think that's one of the best things about smartphone filmmaking is how much you learn because you're forced to use your instincts to make it look like an actual movie. I shot 24 fps, I kept my shutter at 1/50, and it absolutely looked like a movie, or a high-level documentary. Shot in 1080. And just make sure the sound is really good, and add great music, and of course, most importantly, the story, and you have the possibilities of a good movie. I'm not working with smartphones anymore, but I have to say that that was probably the most important part of my journey as a filmmaker. Personally, I think every filmmaker should start on a phone. :-) and I also think they should be the only actor in the film, so they learn about angles and how to make shots look like you have three or four cameras. It's just invaluable experience.
I am ready! In the last month of 2023 I already consumed so much of your content and learned so much! Got me a smallrig setup because it is perfect for my purposes! Thank you Sir, and a great 2024 to you, with lots of love, health and happiness!
I like your channel a lot, because of your experience with both camera iPhone and Android phones. I have the camera, but don't like it and wastes money. use a Galaxy phone. I have many accessories and gadgets including a new small universal, and also I had a small rig older universal one. The new one is bigger, plus it is a magnet for iPhone, but I use clip because of Galaxy phone. I had Filmic Pro legacy and I took several videos with gimbals(Hohem iSteady M6 Kit with AI Magnetic Tracking powervision s1 like this one. bought DJI Osmo mobile 6 and Zhiyun and resold it later with some losses. I'm a senior citizen and forget sometimes, but used the camera for 50 years as a hobby. Later I will subscribe to Patreon, after free stuff I have to go through. Thanks for everything.
Happy New Year, Simon. This video is awesome. The pace you teach is perfect with your 'no nonsense ' style. I have a Samsung S21 and will be using the manual settings in pro-video settings more. BTW, I purchased the DJI Action 3 because your tutorial on that camera convinced me it was my best bet. Thank you for these great tutorials.
Thank you Simon for this very informative and truly complete video. I film almost all of my Marcus Miller music videos on stage with an Oppo find X 5 pro which I leave in automatic mode, although the internal software is full of possibilities. Without being able to move or change settings when I film (Always only one take and no room for error or even the slightest movement otherwise it's ruined!) If you have confidence in the shooting quality of your smartphone, ( and that of the Oppo in 4K 60FPS is excellent) you have to know how to leave everything in automatic mode, I have rarely been disappointed... Except for slight banding effects due to the LED lighting on stage...
@@SiHorrocks Really man. I totally agree with you, especially about busting the myths... The other tips, tricks I already know from your older videos ✌️ I lot of times people do not get me serious when i offer them to shoot a video with smartphone (currently using Xiaomi 13t Pro), but little they now anything about filmmaking and storytelling. Keep up the good work ✌️😁💯
Really good video. I am doing more food footage and currently use a full size gimbal with a Blackmagic 6k camera and my back is suffering. I’m going to give the phone idea a go, so thanks. What case do you use with your iPhone 15, as I am keen to explore lens additions
Good morning,... Your videos are a reference for me,... I record a lot and I enjoy it, I wanted to ask you, do you have any creative solutions, do you know of any accessories to block the sunlight when it is on the side or on top, but that affects the lenses, producing very annoying halos and reflections, a kind of sunshade,... I'm thinking of doing something homemade, but I wonder if there is something more professional. I have an OPPO Find X3 and a cage with handles, where I can put whatever I want.
Great video. But what to do if you have an old Android phone 😅. (I have one 😂). And one more question: Pro mode footage should have more dynamic range right? In cameras log footages have more dynamic range. But in case of mobile why is it different?
I bought the flagsip Samsung S23 Ultra. I like to record local bands, but the recorded sound is muddy, which is very dissapointing. My old Huwawei P20 Pro is much better for this application. I have removed the plastic covers protecting the microphones. Have done a lot of research but to no avail.
Great video. I have a s22 and I have been using the 360 rule ISO 50 at 1/125 with an ND filter. For this setting would I be better off raising the the shutter speed to use less glass? Also I am subscribed to Patreon but I have lost the link.
hey there thank you! I think it depends how much movement there is in the frame and how much the camera moves. If movement it minimal, you can afford to have a slightly faster shutter speed. Here's the Patreon link: www.patreon.com/SilentEye
I recorded 8K 10 bit apple log at around 160 mbps 1.55x anamorphic and it turned out great. Just that 8K is a lot more demanding. Thankfully Android is now getting ProRes too.

I tend yo use nostalgic style when I watch your UA-cam videos, due to a high HDR and contrast 😅

A lot to learn. I have an old android phone. Very little option. 👍
Simon., what do you think about DJI pocket 3? I gave Pixel 7 pro up for it.

(I have one 😂). And one more question:
Pro mode footage should have more dynamic range right? In cameras log footages have more dynamic range. But in case of mobile why is it different?
Depends on how old your phone is. If it uses dynamic tone mapping then Pro mode reduces dynamic range because it turns off tone mapping
@@SiHorrocks but is this opposite in case of cameras?
@@sumangoswami2620 manual control just gives you more accurate control, not more dynamic range

I use a note 20 ultra on my videos but they don't look as good as your videos 🫣

problem is it's 8K from a tiny sensor. Rolling shutter can be an issue, but you do get nice quality sometimes
