One does not simply explain Xanadu. ;) Honestly, Xanadu is an experience. This *seriously* needs to be the very next movie you watch. It is a wonderful musical, and, other than Gene Kelley (if you don't know who he is, he was a legendary film, dance, and singing star) being in the movie, I won't give you spoilers. Just watch, then watch this video again. It'll make you smile even harder.

Ah, Gene Kelly, and our dear sweet Olivia! 'Whenever You're Away From Me' is timeless. Just perfect. So strange sitting in a theater in 1980, watching an icon from our generation perform so credibly with an icon from my grandparents', in his style. Could she just do everything, or what? Even stranger now, searching in another window and watching a clip of that unforgettable scene that was set in his home, realizing it's been more years now since that was filmed, than the scene itself was from the sights and sounds it was recreating. And then a pang, as you realize they're both gone now -- the veteran actor and the lovely ingenue/pop star.

The movie was and is cheesier than a wheel of cheddar, but after all these years I still love it. It brings tears, both happy and sad, to see Olivia so full of life and so beautiful here, and it breaks my heart she's no longer with us. She was no doubt one of my first celebrity crushes as a kid, and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for her. Rest in peace, sweet Olivia. 💔

There is another song from the Xanadu Soundtrack sung by Olivia which was a much bigger hit than this title track. The song is “Magic” and it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. It has a more traditional Olivia sound, but, with a little more electronic sound. It’s a gorgeous song and if you haven’t reacted to it previously I really think you should do a reaction video for it. I think Amber would really enjoy it because of the mood and the vibe of the song.

ELO, ONJ, The Tubes, roller disco, amazing music, Gene Kelly dancing and singing in his last film in a massive shout-out to one of his classic roles from 1944, Rock and Big Band combining in an amazing fusion, a story of a forbidden love... there's _so_ much going on it's hard to describe it all without spoiling the entire story. The movie was panned at the time but became a cult classic mainly because of the superb soundtrack. It’s one hit after another and it’s unforgettable. The fashion and costuming also was spectacular in Xanadu and that also cemented it’s place in pop culture. The looks from clothing to make up and hair are undeniably brilliant and inspired and define the era. The storyline and acting (especially the leading man) leave a lot to be desired,
but somehow Olivia transcends all of that to come out on top of it all and no one cares because she was so beautiful and brilliant and talented. It’s quite a testament to a performer to be able to survive and even conquer a poorly written film. As a young teen, I loved it immediately even when adults and others criticised it. I didn’t care because I found the whole experience so magical. That’s all I cared about.

I am rarely ever starstruck, but when Olivia walked on stage as the show began (singing "Magic"), I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing and had to absorb it, especially that I was up close by her in the second row with my girlfriend.
