Good way to start the hole is to make a similar hole in a block of wood, to use as a guide so that your diamond bit doesn't skate everywhere. Press the wood over the glass and lightly apply pressure to the wet glass.

I've been thinking of trying my diamond bits to make small hole in stained glass but didn't know a good way of doing it without shattering the glass, saw a video of a fellow using a plastic water bottle with a pin hole near the base to get a stream of water directed at the hole he was cutting ,thought to use that method but it looked too messy for stained glass work, your method looks very efficient and well worth a try in my book. thank you for sharing it with us.

Hey Tom. Glad to see you are making regular updates. I've always used the diamond hole saws. When I bought mine they were much more expensive. lol

Fishman - Thank you, this was a quick response to questions on a Facebook glass group I’m in. Took me about a hour to do the whole thing, including uploading and posting it.

Very informative as always. You are really good at that. I would have shattered it.

Missy George -Thanks Missy! Just got to get a feel for how much pressure to apply. As in woodworking “ let the tool do the work”.

I use the diamond bit but with my drill press. I clamp a pan to base and put a piece of sheet rock in pan and add water lay glass down. Pull up and down a few times and done.

Thanks for watching. Yup, that’s a great idea too. I do my Stained glass in the house, my drill press is out in shop, maybe I’ll try it sometime.

Hi Tom, any recommendations on what diamond bits to get. Have tried a few sets without much luck.

Here is the set I bought: www.amazon.com/dp/B0778NND9D/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_2YnpEb0FJGPNM I did not do any special research on them, just found an inexpensive set and bought them. What kind of problems are you having?

I have those same diamond drill bits to make circles --- I can not get my drill bit to catch. It just wants to fly across the piece of glass. Any tips? speed? I hold it at that same angle and the bit still wants to just fly off.

Molly, In the video, when I first start the bit at the angle, it is resting against my thumb. The bit is not hurting my finger at all. I am using my finger to help guide the bit until the groove is deep enough to hold the bit in place. The bit is going slower for sure. It is hard to get the hole exactly where I want it, so depending on the piece, I will cut the shape oversize, drill the hole and then cut/grind the outsize to the size needed. If you are doing a lot of holes, maybe a small drill press would be the way to go. I hope that helps. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions.

@@tomsdreamshopworx Thank you - You made it look so easy. That first groove is the hardest. I appreciate you answering me. I'm going to watch it again. And the idea of a small bench press has been on my mind too.

I am uncertain of how the round drill bit attached to the drill. The base seems to large to fit in

Devora Lans - Look at the 1:22 part of the video. Each hole saw has a reduced metal shank that fits into the drill chuck.
