It's not terribly hard to find a Cayman S with PDK, PSE, sport chrono and PASM (enough to satisfy my tastes in options) and find prices on average 15-20k cheaper than a GTS with similar miles. For me it's a no brainer. I do like the GTS slightly better aesthetically but not enough to justify the price difference used.
I own a GTS and from a pure performance standpoint I'd be hard pressed to say there is a big advantage over an identically equipped spec S. But I do love the unique front fascia stylings of the GTS and the value is better with the included sport chrono, active exhaust and PASM
I bought a used 718 S without sports chrono or PASM, believing that I would not be tracking my car. I wanted an everyday driver and this was exactly what made sense. As it turns out, I am tracking a lot and i wish I had both of these options. The salesman recommended against getting the GTS when I told him I wouldn't be tracking the car. He said the ride was too harsh. It may be for an everyday driver; but the track experience is so electric that I would put up with the harsher ride, just to experience that extra performance on the track. Hindsight is 20-20. In the end, it will be a long damn time, if ever, before I get out of my current 718 S what there is to get on a racetrack. It is just a fabulous drive. And of course, I AM comfortable around town without the lowered/tightened suspension. Life is about trade- offs.

I recently purchased a used Cayman S with x73, sport chrono, 20" Carrera S wheel, sport design steering wheel a many other options($83k msrp) .... it's basically some alcantara and a PSE short of a GTS and saved about $20K over the next lowest priced GTS....... I'm very happy with it. Although I really like the front fascia of the GTS
I had the S and had it for a few years then upgraded to the GTS. I just like the exterior look better and the cabin is so much nicer. The GTS came std with a leather dash, leather door panels etc and when you drive the car it feels way more special. The GTS also comes with all the must have options such as sport chrono, sport exhaust and pasm. I mostly drive for fun, i dont race and with the suspension on normal, it is. very comfortable and as soon as you hit the pasm button the car stiffens up. Mine is the manual and it is by far the nicest car i have ever had.
The GTS bundle includes the sport exhaust, sport chrono, the blacked out head and tail lights, standard 20" wheels, and the PASM or X70. Those are all options you can check on a S but bundled into the GTS, they cost a bit less and you get the extra 15HP bump. The interior carbon and the GTS stitching on the seats is another upgrade option (only available on the GTS) called the GTS Interior package. Otherwise, the trim is a silvery colored plastic. The alcantara is standard on the GTS. I opted for 2 tone leather (black dash and door tops over a tan interior) and I replaced the silver trim with black brushed aluminum on the 2016 GTS I ordered. It looks sweet. The question you asked is moot now (for new cars) because production just shifted to the 981.2 which is called the 718 Cayman and it is a completely different car. Gone is the NA 3.4 6 and in its place is a 3.0 turbo 4 (in the S). I don't think a 718 Cayman GTS has been announced yet. It is highly unlikely any dealer has a new 981.1 GTS sitting in inventory but there are likely some S models still out there. Nice video comparison!
So I bought a stripped down manual 2016 GTS from the with only PTV. One thing that does not get mentioned much is the standard stereo on the GTS, although rarely configured as such because most upgrade, is a nine speaker system vice I believe the five speaker system on the “S”. The standard two position Sport seats are perfect and very light to boot. Also, don’t no why, but the exhaust note is different from both the GT4 and “S”, and seems like it still sounds better then even the new 718 spyder and GT4 just announced. Not sure if the new 4.0 engine has some different sound because of the heftier exhaust to keep it environmentally friendly. But for me, 50 percent of the GTS is the aural experience and that is saying a lot for such a perfectly balanced sports car. I like how Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar summed it up in his unreal review of the car “It’s just Naughty”. At 2989 pounds for a stripped down manual, it is the closest anyone will ever get to heaven on an open Mountain road.
I drive a 981 Cayman S, so I might be a little biased. But really, the Caymans have always been more of a "drivers" car then a purely aesthetically beautiful machine. That said, all the extra goodies in the GTS? My opinion, save your more and get the S. If you really want to spend the extra $$ you might as well get a 911. Or go for broke and buy a GT4. But I do like that GTS badge on the sides.
Picked up a base for the wifey and was curious versus the s and versus the GTS. Base is plenty for her, and it gives me what I need where I need to go but need a little bit more which sways me towards the S. Aesthetic upgrades to the GTS, your review hit the nail on the head about performance and choices... Porsche has really done a great job of small changes to provide offerings towards a number of preferences 👍
Clearly, the GTS is the Cayman to get. It has a slight bump in power, all the right options at a discount, and a few really nice styling upgrades from the S. No contest for me.
D LG , I agree, but the additional HP doesn't give you anything, same 0-60 & only 7 more torque. I think it's only worth it for the external cosmetic & internal upgrades. Thanks for watching.
TheVaughnShow The gts is not the same 0-60 or performance as the S in any matter.... I've raced against the cayman S and it was considerably slower. Plus the suspension is better than that of the cayman s in my opinion. Especially mine having the sport suspension
If you're purchasing a new vehicle, I definitely think the GTS is the way to go & will save you money. However, if you're buying used, I believe the S can be a better deal. Yes, the 0-60 times are identical according to the official Porsche website. As far as the suspension goes, you can get the same suspension on the S. In my case, I have the PASM on the S which is identical to the GTS in the video which also has the PASM. Both vehicles in the video were purchased used with less than 10k miles. The GTS was $75k, while the S was only $59k. The S is loaded, including Sports Chrono, PASM, PDK, PTV, Sports Exhaust, full leather, deviated stitching, PDLS, BiXenon, heated seats, Bose, and even PCCB brakes which is a rare option for a Cayman. The S in the video has many other options as well. I saved $16k as the the interior & cosmetic differences were not a big deal to me.
Great video! I'm glad I found this. I just bought my new white 2016 Cayman GTS much like the one in the video but different wheels. Love that flat 6. Needed to strike before the 4 bangers invade. Keep up the great work.
Great video, but I think one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that Cayman S only has an optional limited slip diff with PTV, while in GTS is comes as standard. To some it's the deal breaker between these two cars.
Fine video! Personally I prefer the nose of the S far better than the GTS and GT4. I also prefer the smaller seat bolsters on the 14 way seats and standard tail lights of the S over the GTS. The likelihood of having unsightly moisture condensation inside the GTS tail lights is far more common than on the standard S ones. So for me the best value is for the one I prefer which is the S. I exchanged the chrome exhaust tips on my 981 Cayman S for the GTS black ones because the soot doesn't show nearly as much. I saved 300 bucks ordering my GTS tips from S-ncoast Porsche rather than a closer Porsche dealership. In my experience their prices are usually the best plus they sometimes have access to parts many dealerships say are not available separately.
There are a number of good DIY installs and others that are much more work than required. With an extra pair of hands you could easily swap the tips in around 45 minutes give or take. Basically unbolt one side where it attaches to the header and wiggle-slide the tips off and so forth. Once you disconnect the one side everything becomes obvious. Easiest is to have the car on a lift but floor jacks will work.
Both great cars. GTS is the better value. That being said, I like the standard tail lights better. I also wish the front fascia was body color at the bottom like how the S and GT4 are. The black bottom reminds me of the base Cayman. That being said, I like the rear plastic defuser on the GTS better. You also get a third radiator on the GTS I believe. Couple things though...if you're not tracking the car, even occasionally, you probably don't need all the performance options of the GTS. Just need the sports exhaust and maybe upgrade the rims. Wish the GTS came with PTV though. That'd be even better value. My dealer said they could ECU tune the S for the extra bump in hp. Off the record of course...but it's not too expensive either Either way, love the 981 platform. Can't really go wrong.
I would want the GTS. It feels sportier visually. They're both powerful cars I think. I wouldn't mind seeing future targa top GTS package. I think it will have a lower stance than its big brother at the roof line to pull it off.
I think the 0-60 times for the S are for a stripper model. So with all the added weight of the GTS options, to maintain the 0-60 time, you need a bit more HP and TRQ. I think if you optioned a standard S with all the options that the GTS has, it will have a slower 0-60 and max speed. I'm sure Porsche didn't get any more performance for a reason, weight adds up quick.
an alcantara steering wheel does not hold up well compared to a leather one, same goes with the shift boot, shifter and seats, that's why I think the Cayman S is the better choice. I don't think anyone would notice a performance difference at all. I would need the Cayman S to have a few options I prefer, like the sport chrono package and sport exhaust.
Get the S and save your money for tires fuel etc. If I were to option an S all I would get would be the Carrera S wheels, the sports chrono package, sports exhaust, manual transmission for sure and silver, sapphire blue or grey paint color.
Thanks for the insight and videos uploaded. Owned the same S as yourself and a few other Caymans and Carerras albeit from a driver point of view, there is not a lot of cars on the road today that can match bang for buck of the cayman range. Love the GTS, in South Africa, they tend to hold their value higher than the S models. (Both are still great thrill rides)

New, definitely the GTS. It comes with pretty much all the must have options as standard for a lower price (for the options). And I much prefer the GTS front styling. And the optional GTS Exterior and Interior packages (all that Carbon is not standard btw) are great options to add on. If you plan to add lots of options, then the GTS makes even more sense as it already comes with a lot of stuff you don't have to worry about.
Good catch, I found out that the only carbon fiber you get with the GTS package is the climate control surround. I agree with you on the better styling for the GTS and I would have definitely picked one up if I was buying new. Because I went the used route, I was able to find a loaded S (in the video) with actually more options than the GTS (in the same video), excluding the interior upgrades, for a lot less money. The biggest and most significant advantages of the GTS are the stock sport suspension which isn't/wasn't available on the S, and the limited slip rear end, likewise unavailable on the S (at least as of the time the GTS was introduced). The differences in driving experience are subtle but perceptible but may not matter to most.
vixapphire , Well, I have the S in the video & it has a limited slip diff & it also has the PASM. You can order X73 sport suspension or PASM for any model Cayman.
vixapphire My 981 S has PTV, PASM, Sports Exhaust, dynamic lights, etc. it's like a GTS including the 18-way seats. It lacks the Alcantara and has 19" wheels but is otherwise very close. I got it this year with 18k miles, certified preowned for 62k.

The center of the standard sport seat backs aren't attached to the side bolsters. If you push your fingers between the center and the bolsters you can pull the center forward and put foam behind it to create lumbar support. You can do it without removing the seats. Takes a bit of fiddling but the end results are worth while if you want more lumbar support. than the seat comes with.

Thanks for the video, a good overview of the two cars. I personally agree if you, if shopping for a new Cayman then GTS. If shopping for a used Cayman however, I would scour for a S equipped with my most coveted GTS-standard options (Sport Exhaust, Sport Chrono, and Sport Suspension). You can even add two of those three items after purchasing an S.
You are correct, the Sport Exhaust can be added later. In fact, you can even choose to not have the Sport Exhaust cockpit button installed and just have the exhaust always in the 'loud' mode. Going this route will reduce the install complexity and cost significantly but you lose the option of changing the exhaust from 'quiet' mode to 'loud' mode with the push of a button on the center console. Regarding the suspension, I have read going from PASM to Sport Suspension is difficult and cost-prohibitive. The GTS came with PASM standard but the Sport Suspension was a no-cost option. I am sure I would be quite happy with a PASM-equipped Cayman S and would not look to change it. If however a Cayman S had a stock suspension, then adding the Sport Suspension is easily done in the aftermarket.
Have a 14 S, just bought a 15 GTS to replace the S. The S is an awesome car. I just wanted the nicer.. way nicer interior in the GTS. Both are a great choice depending on how much you care, or don't care about the interior.
good informative video i do recommend show more comparisons i.e. show one feature of the GTS then show its counterpart on the S. You did this with a lot of the features but it would be nice to see more. overall good video

I don't know about the US, but it seems in the UK the GTS prices are really solid; so seeing how it is basically the same car, you'd save yourself a nice buck. Yes, GTS is overall just nicer, so what. Go back to Chris Harris' Boxster S review - he was like "how much more car do you need?" - And you don't need more, and the GTS doesn't really offer more. Thing is, most people pump 10-15K of options into any Porsche anyway, so If you are shopping for an S, you basically get, or can have, all the crap the GTS has on board as well, except for the 3rd radiator and some GTS stickers... A GTS isn't THAT special anyway unless you optioned the exterior and interior GTS packages...
If you just use this to get to work and back, there isn't going to be a massive difference. However, if you intend to perform in autocross or any other competition, the GTS is a must. I have "autocrossed" both and certainly prefer the GTS. That said, both cars are terrific.
Jeffrey Kirk, I actually autocross the Cayman regularly and have completed quicker times than all of the other Cayman models and 911's as well. I believe it actually comes down to the driver and experience. I've also driven similarly equipped S & GTS models in the hills and found no difference when they are equipped with the same suspension, tires and performance options.
Certainly true. And at the end of the day, the "secret sauce" to the Porsche is the braking system....which is far superior to just about anything on the market. Major advantage, when you can go deeper into a turn before going hard on the brakes.

Well, I'm sure I can learn from you as well. My daily driver is the i8, but I do most of my driver training through Porsche. I've gone through all of the Porsche Driving School course (through Masters Plus) and will be going through their RSR course in early 2017. Amazing cars (the entire range).
I got a 981S model, now im still waiting for a 718 gts/gt4 model release. Personally, Cayman is a really nice car, better than 911. I like the mid engine design because you can feel the engine when you are driving, I also like the double trunks(front and back). If the Cayman could have a powerful engine, it would be best sport car ever. Hopefully, future 718 gt4 could have a powerful engine, like above 450hp. Porsche should give mid engine fans a chance... otherwise, maybe I'll go for R8 as my next car.
TheBucklandgrp , hey that's a great idea. I should be getting some new tires at the beginning of the year, as my P Zero's are just about worn out. Tires are a huge part of handling & that would make a great video.
While I liked the GTS, but not necessarily the alcantara for a driver/tourer , and I just added the PASM, Sport Chrono, 20's, PSE etc and other options to my S. The front nose clip is different though.
alcantara is awesome because it dosent crack, also it is warm in winter and doesent get hot. it also provides and awesome contrast of a high end car..GTS owner with GTS package..

After driving manuals for years, I really do like the PDK. It’s the best dual clutch on the market. I’ve owned a 987, a 981 & a 718 all with PDK & I would definitely recommend it over the manual. As far as the GTS over the S, it’s up to you. I actually had a S that had more options than my friends GTS. So, just look for the options you want and go from there.
cosmetic changes only. A decent S type with a few after market upgrades like a Borla exhaust and better sway bars will be far far better than any stock GTS. The only other upgrade worth doing is the Eibach set of springs which will lower the car a bit and make it very very firmly planted on the track. The intake manifold and throttle body are easy upgrades also. So essentially the Cayman S is the car to have from 2011 and up with the six cyl engine. The GT4 is the only other option that makes any sense at all.
you are forgetting on a performance level, the the gts has 3 radiators instead of 2, tuned differently, sway bars are different. I went to 2 porsche engineering meetings and that is what 2 different drivers and techs told me. Boxster GTS owner.
You can get the sports chrono package on the S right? I'm not sure if the GTS is worth the extra money now, but knowing me if I could I probably would still go with it
Yes, the Sports Chrono package can be added to any car. I had it on my previous base 987. They just include it as part of the GTS package. I was lucky & found a S that was optioned actually even more than a GTS, excluding the interior Alcantara for less than any of the GTS cars I could find. Because it was used, I got a killer deal.
Drives & Details I will agree if you can live with the S and you are going to drive it and don’t necessarily care about depreciation the S is probably the way to go without losing too much
@@DriverGuy23 This month I grabbed a high sec under 10k miles 15 GTS for $67k. High spec 15S and 16 S are going for high 50s with under 10k. Both CPO and both eligible for a 10yr/100k mile warranty from Fidelity. For $6-7k more I went GTS.
The opposite will happen. The 718 doesn't really get sold because of the 4Zylinder turbo. The 981 Caymans keep their price very well, especially the GTS being sold pretty rarely and being the "top model" besides the almost unique GT4. I've took delivery of my Cayman GTS in april, and im looking at the price development of this car since then. (no i've not bought it as an investment, and no, i will probably never sell it). but what i've seen is just, if i would sell my car id make profit out of it. so i dont really think the price of the GTS will decrease a lot. you can also look at the 991.1 Carrera S, theyre more expensive then when there were no 991.2. and sorry for my bad english, its not my first language
xDeserter I've never been a fan of carrera's largely due to their price point, I'd rather fork over the extra cash for a 997 Turbo or Gt3. I prefer the MR layout along with rear trunk offered by the Cayman. Yes I've noticed the 981 Cayman has maintained it's value longer than expected. I've always been fan of turbos be it my japanese background, 718 offers more power/better fuel economy. 981 certainly sounds like a Porsche and maybe die hard Porsche enthusiast are married to the flat 6. It's something I'm monitoring .....also considering a 997 Turbo the earlier models 08/09 with low miles (under 35k) are priced similar to the GtS.

Nice video! I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the base Cayman vs. the Cayman S? I'm hoping to buy a used 2014 Cayman and I can't decide if the S is worth the extra money. I know it would be worth it for track days, but just driving it around on the street I wonder if I'd rather hear the base motor reving higher than the S motor so that I could enjoy more of the awesome sound when I'm just daily driving. What do you think?
Ken G, my first Cayman was a base 987, so 8 think it would definitely be a great purchase. The base car has plenty of hp & torque to have fun. Make sure you drive one before you decide. The sports exhaust will make it sound very nice. If you are unable to find one with the PSE, adding a exhaust is pretty easy & will make the engine more much more pleasant. Regardless, I think you would be very happy with a base '2014 car. I upgraded to a S because I do lots of autocross and enjoy the extra torque on the low end. Let me know how your search goes.

I bought a brand new GTS. But I'm debating if I should sell it (at 100% of the price, and will only sell if someone buys it at that. It's only got 2k miles) and get a Cayman S. I'm scared of let's say 8 years down and I'm selling the thing, ppl will just see GTS as an expensive S model. By that time will theyxstill care about the interior if u are buying a decade old car?
ZDY I don't think you need to worry. The GTS should hold it's value fairly well. Since you bought it new, you were able to get a deal on the combined GTS options. I would hold onto it & enjoy it.

I would be happy with S as long as if it has Sport Exhaust but the reason I am looking at GTS is that PSE is standard on them. Can anyone tell me how different is the sound on it with or w/out the PSE? Is it worth extra money?
Unpopular opinion: The s is cassier and less of a boy-racer. i like the s better than the gts. Ofcouse I'll add certain ugrades like the rear gts lights, a peanut butter interior and the brakes. The GTS logo is ugly and looks like it was designed buy a 1st grader Basically alcantara, carbon fibre and black wheels are overrated aesthetically, even though there's a weight reduction element to the carbon fibre - it wont make that much of a difference.
I drive a 2015 Sapphire blue Boxster GTS with a PDK. I drove a 911 Carrera Cab S and a Boxster S before buying the GTS. Here are my thoughts: Compared to the GTS the 911 is a Buick. The GTS is connected to the road, the cab is not. It is not a fair comparison as mid engine advantage simple a winner Compared to the GTS the Boxster S just feels slow. I know the numbers say it is not a big deal. The mapping and the sports exhaust are the heart of the difference. To prove it take the GTS over a winding pass and feel / listen to the throaty roar. Going into an uphill curve at 5000 rpm in 2nd gear is magic.
Steve Goodman, that's great info Steve. That's why I chose a Cayman over a 911 also. It's just a better drivers car. I believe what drives sales of the 911 is the status symbol factor. That is a perfect description of the GTS. The resonance that comes off that motor loaded up through 5-6 thousand RPM is nothing short of a Symphony. Seven hundred miles through mountain passes literally go by in a flash and feels like 15 minutes vice 10 hours. An unreal experience that never gets old.
Josh Fain The GTS comes with the following options as standard: Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Sport Seats Plus, the Sport Chrono package (adds Sport Plus drivetrain setting, launch control on PDK models), the Sport exhaust system, leather and Alcantara all over the interior, the SportDesign steering wheel, dynamic bi-xenon lights, tinted taillights, and 20-inch wheels.

Any thoughts on how to get a few more ponies from our S models? I've heard that new air filters help, but is this something I need to take to a shop to do? I have the SPE, so I'm not sure if I want to swap that out. Thanks!
Headers with less restrictive cats (I recommend SOUL) will make the largest difference, followed by an ECU tune. Filters are also good and not expensive by comparison. As far as doing the mods yourself, that depends on how comfortable you are working on cars. Once the car is cool, you will need to jack the rear at the very least to gain access to the exhaust manifolds on either side, and you may actually need to remove the rear wheels, but it is a bolt on modification that you can do with a torque wrench and some grease. It also doesn’t require you to swap out any of the PSE components (muffler with valves, etc.) While you have the headers off you should go ahead and install the inexpensive coil pack heat shields (from the 991) to protect your sensitive wiring and ignition coils. The ECU tune is plug and play and flashes the car’s computer via the fuse box on the driver side floorwell. You’re looking at about a 35-40 HP increase from the 981 S (less for the GTS because the ECU tune is standard, which is why that car makes 340 HP from the factory). There are a few things you can do after that, but you’ll get diminishing returns. For pure enjoyment I highly recommend the X73 suspension setup and throwing in some 5mm spacers all around (for cosmetics mostly); if you’re going to track the car the unsprung weight advantage granted by a lighter wheel would be noticeable too.

Love both and have a chance to buy one or the other. Available to me are a 2015 GTS manual(rare I'm told) with 2,100 miles and a 2015 S with 1,375 miles on it. The Cayman S has Infotainment Package, Bose surround sound, Sport Chrono, standard black leather, tinted tail lights, auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors, PDK, 20 Inch Carrera S wheels, Painted Platinum wheels and it's CPO. The GTS is from a dealer but not Porsche. Price difference is $6,400.00. Is it a no brainer to take the GTS though it's not from a Porsche dealer? Oh, they're both the same colour which I love, Carmine red. Any thoughts?
Mark L Tough choice. Although I like the PDK, I would prefer a manual in the future do to the fun factor. If you're ok with the PDK, then I think the GTS is the way to go.
I used to own a 987 Boxster S which I hardly drove. My wife made me sell it and I've missed it since. The GTS is manual and the S is PDK. One of these will be possibly be my last second car.
HTSPascal , yes, manuals are hard to find. Unfortunately, the market is shying away from manuals, but there will always be some out there for us to find. I've driven manuals for more than 30yrs & love them dearly. But, I drove a PDK & it's very engaging & fun too. I say that if you work hard for your money, then buy & drive what you want. It doesn't make you any less of a petrolhead whether you drive a manual or auto, it's the passion that counts.
It's not terribly hard to find a Cayman S with PDK, PSE, sport chrono and PASM (enough to satisfy my tastes in options) and find prices on average 15-20k cheaper than a GTS with similar miles. For me it's a no brainer. I do like the GTS slightly better aesthetically but not enough to justify the price difference used.
I own a GTS and from a pure performance standpoint I'd be hard pressed to say there is a big advantage over an identically equipped spec S. But I do love the unique front fascia stylings of the GTS and the value is better with the included sport chrono, active exhaust and PASM

I bought a used 718 S without sports chrono or PASM, believing that I would not be tracking my car. I wanted an everyday driver and this was exactly what made sense. As it turns out, I am tracking a lot and i wish I had both of these options. The salesman recommended against getting the GTS when I told him I wouldn't be tracking the car. He said the ride was too harsh. It may be for an everyday driver; but the track experience is so electric that I would put up with the harsher ride, just to experience that extra performance on the track. Hindsight is 20-20. In the end, it will be a long damn time, if ever, before I get out of my current 718 S what there is to get on a racetrack. It is just a fabulous drive. And of course, I AM comfortable around town without the lowered/tightened suspension. Life is about trade- offs.
Can't afford either of those Caymans so I bought the next best thing

I recently purchased a used Cayman S with x73, sport chrono, 20" Carrera S wheel, sport design steering wheel a many other options($83k msrp) .... it's basically some alcantara and a PSE short of a GTS and saved about $20K over the next lowest priced GTS....... I'm very happy with it.
Although I really like the front fascia of the GTS
I had the S and had it for a few years then upgraded to the GTS. I just like the exterior look better and the cabin is so much nicer. The GTS came std with a leather dash, leather door panels etc and when you drive the car it feels way more special. The GTS also comes with all the must have options such as sport chrono, sport exhaust and pasm. I mostly drive for fun, i dont race and with the suspension on normal, it is. very comfortable and as soon as you hit the pasm button the car stiffens up. Mine is the manual and it is by far the nicest car i have ever had.
The GTS bundle includes the sport exhaust, sport chrono, the blacked out head and tail lights, standard 20" wheels, and the PASM or X70. Those are all options you can check on a S but bundled into the GTS, they cost a bit less and you get the extra 15HP bump. The interior carbon and the GTS stitching on the seats is another upgrade option (only available on the GTS) called the GTS Interior package. Otherwise, the trim is a silvery colored plastic. The alcantara is standard on the GTS. I opted for 2 tone leather (black dash and door tops over a tan interior) and I replaced the silver trim with black brushed aluminum on the 2016 GTS I ordered. It looks sweet. The question you asked is moot now (for new cars) because production just shifted to the 981.2 which is called the 718 Cayman and it is a completely different car. Gone is the NA 3.4 6 and in its place is a 3.0 turbo 4 (in the S). I don't think a 718 Cayman GTS has been announced yet. It is highly unlikely any dealer has a new 981.1 GTS sitting in inventory but there are likely some S models still out there. Nice video comparison!

So I bought a stripped down manual 2016 GTS from the with only PTV. One thing that does not get mentioned much is the standard stereo on the GTS, although rarely configured as such because most upgrade, is a nine speaker system vice I believe the five speaker system on the “S”. The standard two position Sport seats are perfect and very light to boot. Also, don’t no why, but the exhaust note is different from both the GT4 and “S”, and seems like it still sounds better then even the new 718 spyder and GT4 just announced. Not sure if the new 4.0 engine has some different sound because of the heftier exhaust to keep it environmentally friendly. But for me, 50 percent of the GTS is the aural experience and that is saying a lot for such a perfectly balanced sports car. I like how Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar summed it up in his unreal review of the car “It’s just Naughty”. At 2989 pounds for a stripped down manual, it is the closest anyone will ever get to heaven on an open Mountain road.

I drive a 981 Cayman S, so I might be a little biased. But really, the Caymans have always been more of a "drivers" car then a purely aesthetically beautiful machine. That said, all the extra goodies in the GTS? My opinion, save your more and get the S. If you really want to spend the extra $$ you might as well get a 911. Or go for broke and buy a GT4. But I do like that GTS badge on the sides.
Picked up a base for the wifey and was curious versus the s and versus the GTS. Base is plenty for her, and it gives me what I need where I need to go but need a little bit more which sways me towards the S. Aesthetic upgrades to the GTS, your review hit the nail on the head about performance and choices... Porsche has really done a great job of small changes to provide offerings towards a number of preferences 👍

Clearly, the GTS is the Cayman to get. It has a slight bump in power, all the right options at a discount, and a few really nice styling upgrades from the S. No contest for me.
D LG , I agree, but the additional HP doesn't give you anything, same 0-60 & only 7 more torque. I think it's only worth it for the external cosmetic & internal upgrades. Thanks for watching.
TheVaughnShow The gts is not the same 0-60 or performance as the S in any matter.... I've raced against the cayman S and it was considerably slower. Plus the suspension is better than that of the cayman s in my opinion. Especially mine having the sport suspension
If you're purchasing a new vehicle, I definitely think the GTS is the way to go & will save you money. However, if you're buying used, I believe the S can be a better deal. Yes, the 0-60 times are identical according to the official Porsche website. As far as the suspension goes, you can get the same suspension on the S. In my case, I have the PASM on the S which is identical to the GTS in the video which also has the PASM. Both vehicles in the video were purchased used with less than 10k miles. The GTS was $75k, while the S was only $59k. The S is loaded, including Sports Chrono, PASM, PDK, PTV, Sports Exhaust, full leather, deviated stitching, PDLS, BiXenon, heated seats, Bose, and even PCCB brakes which is a rare option for a Cayman. The S in the video has many other options as well. I saved $16k as the the interior & cosmetic differences were not a big deal to me.

Great video, but I think one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that Cayman S only has an optional limited slip diff with PTV, while in GTS is comes as standard. To some it's the deal breaker between these two cars.
Fine video! Personally I prefer the nose of the S far better than the GTS and GT4. I also prefer the smaller seat bolsters on the 14 way seats and standard tail lights of the S over the GTS. The likelihood of having unsightly moisture condensation inside the GTS tail lights is far more common than on the standard S ones. So for me the best value is for the one I prefer which is the S. I exchanged the chrome exhaust tips on my 981 Cayman S for the GTS black ones because the soot doesn't show nearly as much. I saved 300 bucks ordering my GTS tips from S-ncoast Porsche rather than a closer Porsche dealership. In my experience their prices are usually the best plus they sometimes have access to parts many dealerships say are not available separately.

There are a number of good DIY installs and others that are much more work than required. With an extra pair of hands you could easily swap the tips in around 45 minutes give or take. Basically unbolt one side where it attaches to the header and wiggle-slide the tips off and so forth. Once you disconnect the one side everything becomes obvious. Easiest is to have the car on a lift but floor jacks will work.
Both great cars. GTS is the better value. That being said, I like the standard tail lights better. I also wish the front fascia was body color at the bottom like how the S and GT4 are. The black bottom reminds me of the base Cayman. That being said, I like the rear plastic defuser on the GTS better. You also get a third radiator on the GTS I believe.
Couple things though...if you're not tracking the car, even occasionally, you probably don't need all the performance options of the GTS. Just need the sports exhaust and maybe upgrade the rims. Wish the GTS came with PTV though. That'd be even better value.
My dealer said they could ECU tune the S for the extra bump in hp. Off the record of course...but it's not too expensive either

I’m looking for the GTS because it does include things that are options on the S as you said, and I already own 2 S models.
I would want the GTS. It feels sportier visually. They're both powerful cars I think. I wouldn't mind seeing future targa top GTS package. I think it will have a lower stance than its big brother at the roof line to pull it off.
I think the 0-60 times for the S are for a stripper model. So with all the added weight of the GTS options, to maintain the 0-60 time, you need a bit more HP and TRQ. I think if you optioned a standard S with all the options that the GTS has, it will have a slower 0-60 and max speed. I'm sure Porsche didn't get any more performance for a reason, weight adds up quick.
Interesting thought, I wonder how much (if any) the GTS weighs compared to a S model? Perhaps I can get these 2 cars on a scale in the future.
an alcantara steering wheel does not hold up well compared to a leather one, same goes with the shift boot, shifter and seats, that's why I think the Cayman S is the better choice.
I don't think anyone would notice a performance difference at all.
I would need the Cayman S to have a few options I prefer, like the sport chrono package and sport exhaust.

Owned the same S as yourself and a few other Caymans and Carerras albeit from a driver point of view, there is not a lot of cars on the road today that can match bang for buck of the cayman range. Love the GTS, in South Africa, they tend to hold their value higher than the S models. (Both are still great thrill rides)

New, definitely the GTS. It comes with pretty much all the must have options as standard for a lower price (for the options). And I much prefer the GTS front styling.
And the optional GTS Exterior and Interior packages (all that Carbon is not standard btw) are great options to add on. If you plan to add lots of options, then the GTS makes even more sense as it already comes with a lot of stuff you don't have to worry about.
Good catch, I found out that the only carbon fiber you get with the GTS package is the climate control surround. I agree with you on the better styling for the GTS and I would have definitely picked one up if I was buying new. Because I went the used route, I was able to find a loaded S (in the video) with actually more options than the GTS (in the same video), excluding the interior upgrades, for a lot less money. The biggest and most significant advantages of the GTS are the stock sport suspension which isn't/wasn't available on the S, and the limited slip rear end, likewise unavailable on the S (at least as of the time the GTS was introduced). The differences in driving experience are subtle but perceptible but may not matter to most.
vixapphire , Well, I have the S in the video & it has a limited slip diff & it also has the PASM. You can order X73 sport suspension or PASM for any model Cayman.
vixapphire My 981 S has PTV, PASM, Sports Exhaust, dynamic lights, etc. it's like a GTS including the 18-way seats. It lacks the Alcantara and has 19" wheels but is otherwise very close. I got it this year with 18k miles, certified preowned for 62k.

I was on the Porsche site and was configuring the S...once done I ended up at $77k. I didn't even consider the GTS but you bring up a valid point....

The center of the standard sport seat backs aren't attached to the side bolsters. If you push your fingers between the center and the bolsters you can pull the center forward and put foam behind it to create lumbar support. You can do it without removing the seats. Takes a bit of fiddling but the end results are worth while if you want more lumbar support. than the seat comes with.

Thanks for the video, a good overview of the two cars. I personally agree if you, if shopping for a new Cayman then GTS. If shopping for a used Cayman however, I would scour for a S equipped with my most coveted GTS-standard options (Sport Exhaust, Sport Chrono, and Sport Suspension). You can even add two of those three items after purchasing an S.
John Moons which of the two can you change ? One is sport exhaust but do you think Porsche could change from pasm to sport suspensions ?
You are correct, the Sport Exhaust can be added later. In fact, you can even choose to not have the Sport Exhaust cockpit button installed and just have the exhaust always in the 'loud' mode. Going this route will reduce the install complexity and cost significantly but you lose the option of changing the exhaust from 'quiet' mode to 'loud' mode with the push of a button on the center console.
Regarding the suspension, I have read going from PASM to Sport Suspension is difficult and cost-prohibitive. The GTS came with PASM standard but the Sport Suspension was a no-cost option. I am sure I would be quite happy with a PASM-equipped Cayman S and would not look to change it. If however a Cayman S had a stock suspension, then adding the Sport Suspension is easily done in the aftermarket.

Have a 14 S, just bought a 15 GTS to replace the S. The S is an awesome car. I just wanted the nicer.. way nicer interior in the GTS. Both are a great choice depending on how much you care, or don't care about the interior.
good informative video i do recommend show more comparisons i.e. show one feature of the GTS then show its counterpart on the S. You did this with a lot of the features but it would be nice to see more. overall good video

I don't know about the US, but it seems in the UK the GTS prices are really solid; so seeing how it is basically the same car, you'd save yourself a nice buck. Yes, GTS is overall just nicer, so what. Go back to Chris Harris' Boxster S review - he was like "how much more car do you need?" - And you don't need more, and the GTS doesn't really offer more. Thing is, most people pump 10-15K of options into any Porsche anyway, so If you are shopping for an S, you basically get, or can have, all the crap the GTS has on board as well, except for the 3rd radiator and some GTS stickers... A GTS isn't THAT special anyway unless you optioned the exterior and interior GTS packages...
If you just use this to get to work and back, there isn't going to be a massive difference. However, if you intend to perform in autocross or any other competition, the GTS is a must. I have "autocrossed" both and certainly prefer the GTS. That said, both cars are terrific.
Jeffrey Kirk, I actually autocross the Cayman regularly and have completed quicker times than all of the other Cayman models and 911's as well. I believe it actually comes down to the driver and experience. I've also driven similarly equipped S & GTS models in the hills and found no difference when they are equipped with the same suspension, tires and performance options.
Certainly true. And at the end of the day, the "secret sauce" to the Porsche is the braking system....which is far superior to just about anything on the market. Major advantage, when you can go deeper into a turn before going hard on the brakes.

Well, I'm sure I can learn from you as well. My daily driver is the i8, but I do most of my driver training through Porsche. I've gone through all of the Porsche Driving School course (through Masters Plus) and will be going through their RSR course in early 2017. Amazing cars (the entire range).

I got a 981S model, now im still waiting for a 718 gts/gt4 model release. Personally, Cayman is a really nice car, better than 911. I like the mid engine design because you can feel the engine when you are driving, I also like the double trunks(front and back). If the Cayman could have a powerful engine, it would be best sport car ever. Hopefully, future 718 gt4 could have a powerful engine, like above 450hp. Porsche should give mid engine fans a chance... otherwise, maybe I'll go for R8 as my next car.

While I liked the GTS, but not necessarily the alcantara for a driver/tourer , and I just added the PASM, Sport Chrono, 20's, PSE etc and other options to my S. The front nose clip is different though.

Having owned both, the gts is the more engaging car. The s is sporty and for touring. The gts is more rough and faster. Just depends on preference.

After driving manuals for years, I really do like the PDK. It’s the best dual clutch on the market. I’ve owned a 987, a 981 & a 718 all with PDK & I would definitely recommend it over the manual. As far as the GTS over the S, it’s up to you. I actually had a S that had more options than my friends GTS. So, just look for the options you want and go from there.
cosmetic changes only. A decent S type with a few after market upgrades like a Borla exhaust and better sway bars will be far far better than any stock GTS. The only other upgrade worth doing is the Eibach set of springs which will lower the car a bit and make it very very firmly planted on the track. The intake manifold and throttle body are easy upgrades also. So essentially the Cayman S is the car to have from 2011 and up with the six cyl engine. The GT4 is the only other option that makes any sense at all.
you are forgetting on a performance level, the the gts has 3 radiators instead of 2, tuned differently, sway bars are different. I went to 2 porsche engineering meetings and that is what 2 different drivers and techs told me. Boxster GTS owner.

Yes, the Sports Chrono package can be added to any car. I had it on my previous base 987. They just include it as part of the GTS package. I was lucky & found a S that was optioned actually even more than a GTS, excluding the interior Alcantara for less than any of the GTS cars I could find. Because it was used, I got a killer deal.

@@DriverGuy23 This month I grabbed a high sec under 10k miles 15 GTS for $67k. High spec 15S and 16 S are going for high 50s with under 10k. Both CPO and both eligible for a 10yr/100k mile warranty from Fidelity. For $6-7k more I went GTS.

The opposite will happen. The 718 doesn't really get sold because of the 4Zylinder turbo. The 981 Caymans keep their price very well, especially the GTS being sold pretty rarely and being the "top model" besides the almost unique GT4. I've took delivery of my Cayman GTS in april, and im looking at the price development of this car since then. (no i've not bought it as an investment, and no, i will probably never sell it). but what i've seen is just, if i would sell my car id make profit out of it. so i dont really think the price of the GTS will decrease a lot. you can also look at the 991.1 Carrera S, theyre more expensive then when there were no 991.2.

xDeserter I've never been a fan of carrera's largely due to their price point, I'd rather fork over the extra cash for a 997 Turbo or Gt3. I prefer the MR layout along with rear trunk offered by the Cayman. Yes I've noticed the 981 Cayman has maintained it's value longer than expected. I've always been fan of turbos be it my japanese background, 718 offers more power/better fuel economy. 981 certainly sounds like a Porsche and maybe die hard Porsche enthusiast are married to the flat 6. It's something I'm monitoring .....also considering a 997 Turbo the earlier models 08/09 with low miles (under 35k) are priced similar to the GtS.

Doesn't the S have the big brakes too? I thought that was a standard S option.
Brian M Sport or Ceramic brakes are an option for all Caymans. This particular model was rare and had the ceramic brake option.

Nice video! I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the base Cayman vs. the Cayman S? I'm hoping to buy a used 2014 Cayman and I can't decide if the S is worth the extra money. I know it would be worth it for track days, but just driving it around on the street I wonder if I'd rather hear the base motor reving higher than the S motor so that I could enjoy more of the awesome sound when I'm just daily driving. What do you think?
Ken G, my first Cayman was a base 987, so 8 think it would definitely be a great purchase. The base car has plenty of hp & torque to have fun. Make sure you drive one before you decide. The sports exhaust will make it sound very nice. If you are unable to find one with the PSE, adding a exhaust is pretty easy & will make the engine more much more pleasant. Regardless, I think you would be very happy with a base '2014 car. I upgraded to a S because I do lots of autocross and enjoy the extra torque on the low end. Let me know how your search goes.

I bought a brand new GTS. But I'm debating if I should sell it (at 100% of the price, and will only sell if someone buys it at that. It's only got 2k miles) and get a Cayman S. I'm scared of let's say 8 years down and I'm selling the thing, ppl will just see GTS as an expensive S model. By that time will theyxstill care about the interior if u are buying a decade old car?
ZDY I don't think you need to worry. The GTS should hold it's value fairly well. Since you bought it new, you were able to get a deal on the combined GTS options. I would hold onto it & enjoy it.
As you can see it's holding up. I recently purchase my 2015 at the Porsche dealer for 68k.

I would be happy with S as long as if it has Sport Exhaust but the reason I am looking at GTS is that PSE is standard on them. Can anyone tell me how different is the sound on it with or w/out the PSE? Is it worth extra money?
PSE is a MUST HAVE! I have a 2014 Cayman S and the sound is incredible!

Unpopular opinion: The s is cassier and less of a boy-racer. i like the s better than the gts. Ofcouse I'll add certain ugrades like the rear gts lights, a peanut butter interior and the brakes.
The GTS logo is ugly and looks like it was designed buy a 1st grader
Basically alcantara, carbon fibre and black wheels are overrated aesthetically, even though there's a weight reduction element to the carbon fibre - it wont make that much of a difference.

I drive a 2015 Sapphire blue Boxster GTS with a PDK. I drove a 911 Carrera Cab S and a Boxster S before buying the GTS. Here are my thoughts:
Compared to the GTS the 911 is a Buick. The GTS is connected to the road, the cab is not. It is not a fair comparison as mid engine advantage simple a winner
Compared to the GTS the Boxster S just feels slow. I know the numbers say it is not a big deal. The mapping and the sports exhaust are the heart of the difference.
To prove it take the GTS over a winding pass and feel / listen to the throaty roar. Going into an uphill curve at 5000 rpm in 2nd gear is magic.
Steve Goodman, that's great info Steve. That's why I chose a Cayman over a 911 also. It's just a better drivers car. I believe what drives sales of the 911 is the status symbol factor. Most 911 owners I know are not drivers like you & I, so they don't appreciate the difference. I appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching.
'15 BGTS with PDK 40k miles in 1 year
Previous 996TT owner WITH 6spd. Much prefer GTS It puts a smile on my face when ever I start it up.
That is a perfect description of the GTS. The resonance that comes off that motor loaded up through 5-6 thousand RPM is nothing short of a Symphony. Seven hundred miles through mountain passes literally go by in a flash and feels like 15 minutes vice 10 hours. An unreal experience that never gets old.

Josh Fain The GTS comes with the following options as standard: Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Sport Seats Plus, the Sport Chrono package (adds Sport Plus drivetrain setting, launch control on PDK models), the Sport exhaust system, leather and Alcantara all over the interior, the SportDesign steering wheel, dynamic bi-xenon lights, tinted taillights, and 20-inch wheels.
TheVaughnShow Ok thanks for the quick reply, I was looking at a 2015 cayman and the dealer had it listed as a GTS. The outside had the appearance of a GTS and the VIN came back “GTS trim” however it has standard cayman s interior. The knowledge is much appreciate!
Any thoughts on how to get a few more ponies from our S models? I've heard that new air filters help, but is this something I need to take to a shop to do? I have the SPE, so I'm not sure if I want to swap that out. Thanks!
JoeyandLindsay sorry, can't help you much with that. 325hp was plenty for me.
Headers with less restrictive cats (I recommend SOUL) will make the largest difference, followed by an ECU tune. Filters are also good and not expensive by comparison. As far as doing the mods yourself, that depends on how comfortable you are working on cars. Once the car is cool, you will need to jack the rear at the very least to gain access to the exhaust manifolds on either side, and you may actually need to remove the rear wheels, but it is a bolt on modification that you can do with a torque wrench and some grease. It also doesn’t require you to swap out any of the PSE components (muffler with valves, etc.) While you have the headers off you should go ahead and install the inexpensive coil pack heat shields (from the 991) to protect your sensitive wiring and ignition coils. The ECU tune is plug and play and flashes the car’s computer via the fuse box on the driver side floorwell. You’re looking at about a 35-40 HP increase from the 981 S (less for the GTS because the ECU tune is standard, which is why that car makes 340 HP from the factory).
There are a few things you can do after that, but you’ll get diminishing returns. For pure enjoyment I highly recommend the X73 suspension setup and throwing in some 5mm spacers all around (for cosmetics mostly); if you’re going to track the car the unsprung weight advantage granted by a lighter wheel would be noticeable too.

If you are keeping it for a decade, the GTS will be worth much more when you are ready to trade. 2:30 a gross burp.

Absolutely, I think the GTS in this video looks very "Racey", while the S looks "Classy". It's amazing how exterior changes, colors & wheel selections can make the models look so different. Thanks for watching!
Love both and have a chance to buy one or the other. Available to me are a 2015 GTS manual(rare I'm told) with 2,100 miles and a 2015 S with 1,375 miles on it. The Cayman S has Infotainment Package, Bose surround sound, Sport Chrono, standard black leather, tinted tail lights, auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors, PDK, 20 Inch Carrera S wheels, Painted Platinum wheels and it's CPO. The GTS is from a dealer but not Porsche. Price difference is $6,400.00. Is it a no brainer to take the GTS though it's not from a Porsche dealer? Oh, they're both the same colour which I love, Carmine red.

Mark L Tough choice. Although I like the PDK, I would prefer a manual in the future do to the fun factor. If you're ok with the PDK, then I think the GTS is the way to go.
I used to own a 987 Boxster S which I hardly drove. My wife made me sell it and I've missed it since. The GTS is manual and the S is PDK. One of these will be possibly be my last second car.
Where i live, there are barely any of these for sale and not even one with stickshift... all these rich noobs ordering automatic...
HTSPascal , yes, manuals are hard to find. Unfortunately, the market is shying away from manuals, but there will always be some out there for us to find.
I've driven manuals for more than 30yrs & love them dearly. But, I drove a PDK & it's very engaging & fun too. I say that if you work hard for your money, then buy & drive what you want. It doesn't make you any less of a petrolhead whether you drive a manual or auto, it's the passion that counts.
