    As a Brit, I remember being told ‘you’re not from here, are you?’ When sitting on a bench in Central Park. We’d not spoken so our accent hadn’t given us away so I asked how did he know? Answer was we were wearing brightish clothes. Nothing outlandish, but bright. Most locals would be wearing darker colours. Was told by an airline stewardess that the reason New Yorkers wear black is they can’t find anything darker.

    A big difference I noticed is that many people in the US don't dress up when going to a restaurant for dinner, particularly in the south. Many will go to somewhere quite upmarket and still wear shorts and a t-shirt which would never happen in the UK whatever the weather. I had never heard the term dress shorts until I visited the US.

      Completely agree! Not just baggy but stuff that is obviously terribly fitting. While intentionally oversized clothing can look fab on tall people especially (and that is because it is specifically tailored to fit like that), mostly the baggy clothes just look so sloppy.

    This is an interesting topic and I think I disagree with you. In my experience Americans do dress more casually in more circumstances compared to people in the UK.
    I think Americans outside of the US are generally easy to spot as well, so there must be subtle differences in the way that they present themselves.

    • @hippyfriend
      @hippyfriend 4 роки тому +5

      I would agree, there are some differences. I found when travelling with American friends that locals around Europe would "clock" them as tourists more than me (English) because they usually wore shorts and often baseball caps. I'm pretty casual but I usually wore jeans and boots and never a baseball cap!

      I recently saw photos of a child's christening in the US. Don't know if this is typical but parents, godparents and guests were all in jeans or shorts, casual shirts and some even in tee shirts. That would never happen in UK/Ireland. People like to dress up for an occasion like that - and are expected to.

    While there are bits of US style I enjoy - some of it is so playful and out-there and fun, I’m in Dallas right now and adore the vintage cowboy boots and some of the street fashion. However when I came to live in the US from England I was taken aback by how much I really didn’t like the general style - and that includes the trendy areas in central Seattle, Dallas and Austin.
    Personally a lot of it to me looked very ill fitted and sloppy - intentionally oversized stuff and hoodies can look so cute but usually the stuff I see just looks so cheap and like they don’t fit right - you don’t need to be rich to look expensive either - It’s so easy in the US given the scale of the choice as well as the enormous second hand market to find beautiful clothes at bargain prices comparative to the UK
    Another issue is outfits that lack a sense of balance and tacky details - so either people covered in cheesy slogans, college branded clothes or designer logos that are distracting and add nothing visually pleasing to the look aesthetically
    Of course having time and money makes it easier to dress well - I’m on a student budget but have a lot of time to spend browsing vintage shops and sales to find bargains, however a lot of rich people dress awfully too IMO.
    It’s so surprising to me because there are so many beautiful brands you just can’t get in the UK but on the whole people seem to dress much worse here

    A pretty perceptive video from you, as usual, I’d say. Generally people in the UK do tend to dress appropriately for the weather, although perhaps in Newcastle with cold gales scudding in off the North Sea on weekends the clothing worn by young people heading out for a night on the town (pre-COVID-19 obviously 😉), young women specially, is probably a lot less than the climate requires, in the name of fashion & looking good - the alcohol probably helps too.

      I mean torn jeans are hardly a new thing mate. I'm pretty sure they were around in the 90s if not even before that. They've definitely been "in" at LEAST since the 2000s though.
      And I mean like the other guy said. Fashion is ALWAYS changing and will keep changing. It's like languages. Change in these areas is innevatible and pointless to fight. Every generation dislikes the things of the next generation. The stuff that our or our parent's generations found good and perfect were looked down upon by their parents, and so on.
      Don't have to like something or agree with something, but it won't make it stop. It's an unstoppable and innevitable change. Got to either adapt to it or not care about it. Pointless to be mad about it.
