Good idea to practice "oh crap" moments when they aren't "OH CRAP" moments. I'm sure you know it will give you both a lot more confidence when it does come around, and we all know it will.
Sailing on and off the hook with no engine. That's the Coast Guard training coming out. Good job, be safe.

built Crowther 45 cat in 82, 10 years aboard and never at marinas, tips we learned, ALWAYS a day anchor ready at bow AND another at stern, we had a single Johnson 25 as power. If coming to dock, stern anchor is ready if engine failure. Loved sailing off the bow anchor, sometimes anchor by stern for better ventilation and less "sailing" sideways while at anchor, Paint anchor a strong color, white for mud, or as needed. 70 yrs old now home schooled our Son- cannot describe the strength of memories from LIVING those years. Suburban existence is a seduction / anesthesia of tame memories! AHHHHHHH, I'm already back there on that efficient Spartan cat, ahhhhhhh........
Leaving an anchorage under sail is always so rewarding. When anchoring under sail, you can use the main sail as a brake to top forward momentum by pushing on the boom and backing it. You can also back the main to get you moving backwards, allowing you to back down on the anchor to make sure your are hooked. I wish everyone on the water would practice these techniques like you are. Makes us all safer in the long run. Have a great trip!!!

Backing the main into weather when anchoring on a 35-foot boat is a little more involved than just "pushing" on it.
I wish more sailors would practice all the techniques more :-)

Now that's real sailing. Just make sure you have the extra room needed to sail on and off the hook. Coming into the anchorage downwind and kicking the hook off then rounding up and back-winding the fore sale is how you power set on the wind. Next up, warping off a slip with an off shore breeze coming in. :)

Its either a Delivery or a Cruise. When you want to get to somewhere by a certain time, its a delivery. Doing a delivery means your attention is focused on getting there, not the journey but the destination. You have to admit it. You guys sound like you are more about getting somewhere by night or the next day versus just cruising along. Each evoke a very different set of emotions and mental attention. Just a little challenge for you to think about. I know you want to cruise but your videos sound like you are more on a delivery, rather than cruising. All that being said, I love your teaching videos. Happy journeys!

I Understand the practice. I had a twin screw boat and always practiced mooring with one engine, just like I did in the Coast Guard. It came in handy many times. BM1 Retired now. Happy sailing

Awesome to see you guys got to hit the Everglades. I used to take 3-4 weekend trips a year in Flamingo. We’d fish Atlantic to Gulf and back. That looked like a great test for the equipment too. Fair winds
I got an education on that Torqueedo motor. I’m sold on it. Very, very good video. I was thinking today that I had to get home by 9:00 PM CST because I knew I was going to get a notification on a new Abandon Comfort video. You’ve been getting them out like clockwork every Thursday around the same time. This is by far my favorite sailing series.
Trey Bull check out the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0. It has better battery life, and is much quieter. Plus, the battery floats if you drop it in the water, unlike the Torqeedo.

Finally, we were in Lehigh Acres when I got recruited by PG&E.
Normally the sharks don't like portaboats - the pieces stick between their teeth 😁
We set our hook under sail using sail. The easiest is. After you fall back on your rode and take down the main all normal like then roll out about half your headsail on the backed tack. Bow will blow off wind stretching out chain. If the hook is really set after a minute or two the backed jib will eventually be pulled against and the bow will be forced onto the other tack. Then roll up jib and dive in to look at anchor. This backed jib will take you to the side a bit (think like a water skier at the end of the slalom) so try this method when you have some room and not much current. I learned this watching the Pardeys anchor next to us years ago on Talisman.
Now that I see you have the porte boat I realize that must have been your Rassey in the marina at Stock Island recently. We are up on the hard at the boatyard next door just off your starboard side.

To set anchor under sail, I lower or reef enough to slow to about 2kts, sail downwind, drop anchor where I want it to set and feed out chain to the right scope then snub it. Boat will swing itself when the anchor catches. ( I do this single-handed)
Only problem with this is chain can rub on topsides and waterline. (no bowsprit).
Speed may be the crucial factor. ( too fast and the chain can run out scary fast, and this may also lead to the chain rubbing problem)
Sailing off, I have experimented with just main sheeted fairly close and let the boat tack itself up toward the anchor, pulling in chain on each tack as it goes slack, until I sail over the anchor. Sometimes also set the headsail sheeted loosely amidships, sometimes just the headsail. they all work to varying degrees. Very satisfying to sail on and off anchor.
Good practice! I crewed on a Columbia years ago that had a dead engine, we would practically sail it out of the slip. Never had a collision.
I have seen trolling motors go faster and run a hell of a lot quieter. Also I am willing to bet that you need to replace the bearings if it is 10 years old. It may be electric, but it still has bearings.
Torqeedo motors are great! We use one ourselves :) Great job on not using the motor! Got to say I´d be more concerned about sailing onto the hook! Look forward to seeing that!

It's absurdly fast!
Everglades is one of the best fishing spots in all of Florida. So glad you choose to keep going while you had the wind. After all if 20 knots is too much no one should be sailing ever haha. Don't agree with you on the choice of dingy engine however. A good Minn Kota 55lbs ripe tide trolling motor would work just as well. I used mine on a 15 foot Back Country flats boat for days in the everglades. 3 to be exact. If you find yourself with an unexpected storm approaching you will need the power of a 9.9 gas engine to get back to the boat quickly. Or perhaps you need to pull anchor from the opposite direction to get it un-lodged. Either way that electric just won't ever have the power you will need to get out of certain predicaments
OH MAN! Torqeedo for the win! My dream for a Tanzer 22 involves one of their prop mount systems!

Hey Ryan & Kelsey! Quick question for you - how are you managing sea sickness? It appears that Ryan doesn't seem too negatively impacted by it, but in early episodes it looks like Kelsey was. Do you eventually get used to it, do you medicate for it? It looked like she had a bracelet on at one point which is supposed to help? Thanks guys, great series!
Almost every sailer vlogger is either in Florida somewhere (keys) usually or the Bahamas, do you guys link up with other vloggers? You are all usually in the same vicinity as so many others..

Great practice on and off the hook. I think too many sailors rely on their engines for everything. I have even seen them start there motor just to tack? Once you know you can sail without it than it truly is just an auxiliary motor.
Button the boat up before nightfall. One of the worst nights I've ever spent on a boat was anchoring off the everglades. Left my cabin hatch open and paid the price. Awful awful awful. They come in like mad at nightfall. I've been bit up by mosquitoes before but never like that. I spent hours killing them and hours cleaning up bug guts and blood off every surface in that cabin.
We always have netting over the 1 open hatch. Our hatches are aft-facing so they don't do anything for allowing breeze into the boat. Our only hatch that is fwd facing is the head and we have that open with netting.
It is true, best to be there in the winter for the bugs but you can anchor waaaaay(1 mile) off the beach and that helps a lot even in the summer, but the friggin horse fly's will find you and bite the hell out of you. When you go on deck especially first thing in the morning be ready cuz they will be waiting. Close up the boat after dark and turn off the lights and wait a while then turn on the lights and let the killing begin! A little hydrogen peroxide on a paper towel cleans up the blood splatter. BUT nothing beats anchoring right in the river at dusk the water comes alive especially in the warm months

I have an old 3.3 hp Mercury that still starts on one pull cold and I've never ever had it break down or leave me stranded any where. Never even broke a prop cotter pin. It can run for days on it's internal tank of fuel. I love it. I have thought about an electric outboard though, I wonder how long will it take you to bring the charge back up from 25% to 100%?Do you do that off your solar panels on the boat or wait till you get to a dock somewhere? You failed or I missed it, but you said only one thing broke on your motor....what was it? I know my engine could probably get fixed just about any where, if you should need a part for your outboard I guess you have to wait for the mail??? What is their support like? I would think it's pretty good in the states but how about else where? Hmmmm.
My question also..can you charge it on the hook off solar?

Roo's reaction to Ryan going overboard was very cool and emotional. What breed is he and do they naturally have a cropped tail? I would be interested to know (after some sailing trips of course!) how you cope with a dog at sea? Dogs on land require roaming space, or at least a walk in the park (mainly to empty bladder and bowels. How do you manage this onboard?

I'd be surprise if Roo jumped overboard watching his reaction to you going in. He might slip somewhere down the line, but I don't think he will go in willingly.

Pretty disingenuous to say that you would have had to repair a brand new outboard twice in the same time you’ve had your Torqueedo. That’s just nonsense. But you were probably comparing it to an old worn out engine, right? I know, you didn’t say new. Not to mention the fact that a Torqueedo and extra batteries cost a ton more than an equivalent new outboard. If you want to be electric, be electric, but be honest about the true costs. Transparency? Most people are buying new, there ain’t that many of them around. And how much do you think an equivalent sized outboard weighs? I am curious how ten year old batteries held up.
You are correct Josef. Every thing I have heard is electric has a worse overall impact to the environment than gas.

How well does the dinghy perform with three or four people in it? Or with groceries and several water jugs in a windy anchorage? I'm thinking it is a bit under-powered considering it seems like most dinghy's are powered by 5, 10, 15 or even more horsepower. The Key West mooring field should give it a good test, let us know how that works out.

Key West isn't too bad to enter at night but I wouldn't enter any harbor I've never been in before in the dark on my own boat. I've been there a few times and entered it once hours before sunrise early one morning after our crossing back from Cuba on charter I crewed for. It was a bit scary as it is a fairly long channel and there are a ton of boats closer in to the island on the West end. But it wasn't my call as the charter captain, a guy I had never even met before this trip, didn't want to wait for morning light with cabins full of paid guests aboard. It's so dark and hard to see where you are and need to trust the GPS more than I like to. As crew it was my watch as we approached so I got the job of helming in the dark the entire way in while the captain helped keep watch and spot, so it wasn't too horrible having been there a half dozen times before, with that last time only a week before when we left that same trip. Still, if it were my call I'd have found a place to wait out the sunrise.
Yea I never enter a harbor at night until I've been there at least once before. Always prefer to leave early than to arrive late!
The only harbor I'll enter at night is our local Chicago harbors, and of those only the one we were living at he last 2 years and maybe the one just south of there. But we have been in and out of our hundreds of times and at least half of those times we came back after dark. it took dozens of times sailing with our club at night before I even started to become comfortable sailing at night in that area.
I wouldn't suggest anyone try to sail around there at night if they are not familiar with Chicago's lakefront. There are no shoals by the city, but there are a lot of protective seawalls that are not very well marked at night since they are very long and only marked with lights at the ends, and one of the old unused water intake cribs has been unlit for a couple of years now. I'm waiting for someone to sail into that one one of these days and wreck. It's scary enough knowing exactly where it is.
Then there is "dime pier" that is just off of Navy Pier which is not a pier any more but used to be 60+ years ago and now is just a bunch of wood and concrete sticking out of the water maybe 6-8". A large 50' motorboat hit that last year and ended up sinking just outside of our harbor mouth and got towed in by the Coasties to finally sink to the bottom in the shallow water a couple hundred yards from our mooring for a few days before they pulled it up. It's not for the faint of heart.
That’s pretty loud, are there any lubrication points on the drivetrain portion of that Torqudeo? It would last longer if the maintenance is done periodically
What's the difference between the Torqeedo and a regular trolling motor? Trolling motors are very affordable.
I keep looking at your Mainsheet and its twist. Not good to avoid chafing the rope. Also I wouldn't have a snap shackle connection to the traveller car on such a vital piece of equipment. The snap shackle is probably the weakest part of your Mainsheet setup.

That electric outboard is way cool. I'd never heard of one before(sheltered life), so knowing that a reliable one is available should help convince folks to check them out. During that night crossing, how many crab pots did you snag?
Edward Grant surprisingly none! We lost a lot of footage from this episode but the reason Ryan jumped off the back of the boat was to see if there was any line in the prop 🙂
If you ride closer to shore going against the tide sometimes there's an ebb that makes it easier to get upstream.

Thanks, Jeffrey! Our torqeedo goes 4.5kts full throttle which for this test it was full throttle for the entire trip. If we go half throttle our range is almost 15nm total.

How low can you go on that battery before damaging it? Under 3v per cell is bad. How long to solar recharge it?

with current advances in battery and electric motor performance. Going all electric is a very wise option. With solar, wind, hydro and a 6.5K diesel gen-set. You have the best of both worlds. And when things are going well, you wont even have to start the gen set. but its there to power your electric drive motor.
Agreed :) If there's any application where electric motors make the most sense - it's on the water.
