It's always nice to see other BCC's. We've lived aboard our little BCC for over 5.5 years now. I'd say the boat is very comfortable, but you have to set your expectations right. A double bunk is pretty much a requirement for this. I'm always amazed at how much space an engine takes up. The true value of these boats will only be realized when you get them out on the open ocean and get into the big stuff. That's when you come to appreciate everything that went into the design of them. A lot of things that might seem silly when at anchor are the things, you'll be so glad you have when you're in the rough stuff. Thank you for sharing, I hope the boat finds a wonderful new owner that will appreciate her for what she is.
What I like about that boat is that it's all business, no glitz and glamour. A minimalist could probably live aboard for a time, but definitely not a party boat!
I’ve worked on ships - mostly top end yachts from 30 ft to 120 ft, and all the “old salts” said best boat for world sailing were this size, for the same reason: bobbing like a cork on waves that stress larger boats.
It isn't "little". It is over 37 feet long. Read the description of the boat. It is 28 feet at the waterline. No 28ft sailboat has that much room down below.

Hi guys, we have in Argentina a BBC made "all in wood" with wonderful details like the one you show in this video, it was made in a local and prestigious shipyard called "Sarmiento". It is the most beautiful, strong, simple and seaworthy boat in which I have been able to sail so far.
The BCC is at the top of my list, my current boat project has included a number of the features of this design, though it is no where near the mark. I love Arichat, lived there over 50 years ago.
the BCC is probably the best 28 foot sailing vessel ever built. If I had to sail around the world, that vessel would be my first choice. Since I do not have to do that, I am not going to. TY.
Oh to just forget all my responsibilities and go sail the world. This is a gorgeous little vessel that as you said would be the perfect choice for a solo sailor or couple that are sure of their relationship to sail the world with. What she lacks in space she more than makes up for in quality and ability. To whoever is lucky enough to be the new owners of this vessel. I truly hope you use her to her full potential keeping in mind she's no marina queen, she is meant to get out there and sail. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
An iconic boat for sure. But, when I look at the bowsprit and the boomkin, all I can think of is the extra charges at the marina. Any marina that I've been to charges by the LOA, not LWL. They also make access to the jib's roller furler and wind vane steering ( if so equipped ) respectively, a challenge. But, oh so beautiful.
I believe that Larry and Lin Pardey yacht "Serafynn" was a 24ft Bristol cutter, designed by Lyle Hess,and their books are worth reading. Serafynn of course was engineless and made of Oak I believe. And circumnavigated the globe a number of times.
Larry built the 30ft Taleisin out of teak with his barehands after Serrafyn, a Bristol cutter also by Lyle Hess and sailed the world in it also engineless. Poor Larry developed Parkinsons disease and died 2 years ago. Taleisin has since been sold. Lin continues to live in New Zealand, I believe.

The first time I used a sextant, I put us within 3 miles of our location. Obviously close enough to be within visual. A few months later as a liveaboard, I learnt the technique of D.R...dead reckoning. A skill worth having. Thanks for your response.
Beautiful boat, expensive, yes, but, classic sports cars are not huge but, I still want one, and I lived in a caravan for many years of the same size. Great music for the walkthrough too.✌
I noticed you made two errors...1) the skylight is not a butterfly, it is a single opening hatch. Butterfly hatch opens from port & stb sides and usually will leak over time at the hinge .2) There is a slide out double bunk on port side that was forgotten to be mention.
It’s a butterfly looking hatch , but being so small only hinges at the front as a complete unit. ( so probably leaks less!) 2. The slide out berth is mentioned in the on screen notes. Cheers Warren

@@ianfirth-clark5975 I bought a Water Witch (wooden hull) called White Witch registered in Plymouth Devon back in 1983 or 4 and my friend and I sailed halfway around the world in it for the next4 years, ending up in Spain where we eventually sold it and moved on to a motor yacht. Those years on the Witch were some of the happiest years of my life.

I know a lot of "Witches" were home built by people as one could buy the plans for it and the Golden Hind which was a slightly bigger but more or less the same except for being ketch rigged. Our Witch was actually professionally built in Plymouth which is why it was registered there, however we bought it from a BBC technician who had been restoring it in Newhaven nr. Brighton. He had finished it to an excellent standard but went to the Boat Show at earls court and was persuaded to buy a new Westerly. He was offered £8000 in part exchange for it but after viewing it I offered him 500 more so we secured it there and then. Glad we did, it saved our lives more than once 😊 (we were not terribly experienced at sailing). Anyway, we took it through the French canals, setting off across the Channel in November and having reached Nevers got frozen in by mid December. 😅 We sat it out until the thaw and finally reached the Med. by March and set off on our 4 year adventure. I could go on for hours but don't want to bore you. As I said before, we eventually sold it to a young couple when back in Spain and their intention, as the girl was Australian, to take it down to Aus. I don't know if they ever did as we were off to Turkey in our new to us motor yacht where we successfully chartered for a few years and lost touch with them. I have very fond memories of the old White Witch and often think of all the great times had and people we met along the way.
I could never understand the hull numbers on early bcc's. I have hull number 50 built in 1979. So in the first 5 years they must have built a lot of boats.
well made however small carry capacity for 2 or more long distances. the Pardy's made it work with a similar boat but to cross oceans i would want 10ft more at least.
Got to be honest, Could go around the World in it, but I definitely wouldn't, Despite there being some boats of shorter length that I definitely would go anywhere on. One example, the shallow Draft Bilge keeled Macwester 26. A Lot More Physical interior volume which means a lot less like an insufferable Sauna in hot climates, and from the walk through a lot more water tank, fuel, and food space, the linear galley in the 26 really sucked, but the Heads were fine. Pilot Berth to port, to Starboard a nice dinette seating 4 comfortably, plus it dropped down into a double Berth. A pretty decent V Berth forward, with berths that weren't insanely high off the sole flooring (bad news in the Endeavour 32 ). plus a Construction much tougher than a Brick Outhose. I Loved that boat. To me the BCC is one of the ideal Coastal boats in the habitat it was designed for Britain's Bristol Channel, and around Britain Coastal Cruising. Just add Webasto Heating, and a couple of Rigid Solar panels, pluscincreased fuel capacity, and you're good to go, and just top the batteries up with shorepower. With a 35hp inboard diesel, enough power for a decent Alternator too. There is a Ailboat very similar to the BCC, I had a look at once, interior a bit open plan , poor headroom, fussy Sailplan and a very low price an Outstanding Condition. Could I live with it? Yes. Would I want to live with it ? A resounding Nope ! so I walked away and got the much better Endeavour 32 long keel shallow Draft at less than half the price - with a not run in yet Yanmar diesel, Barrier coated, plastic Portholes replaced with stainless steel storm ones with storm covers and insect screens, plus 5 new unused Sails worth more than I paid for the boat. Allmit needed was moving to a Boatyard, a full checkover and Service, plus a decent new oversized Anchor fitted to all high quality triple galvanised chain. It was too easy to fall put of too high V berths, so the pilot berth to aft port side won the job. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
Nice tour, although it follows the Sailing World philosophy of "They have not reviewed a boat they didn't like". Deeper insight would be fascinating. Topics such as equipment access( engine, tanks, through hulls). Electrical and electronics? On this BCC was there an entire locker filled with sand paper and varnish? Not a survey level of detail, but tell us something we would not know from reading the listing. Still a great overview. Thanks!
Enjoyed the tour! That is a nice little sailboat. But does it have an auto pilot? I'm also wondering, was that a wet head? You didn't mention or show a shower attachment.
@@letthewindblowme2593 I have a 20 foot Paceship P2-20 that only has a tiller and I have wondered about getting an auto pilot that would work with a tiller. I solo sail pretty much all the time so there are times when it would be VERY good to let an auto pilot steer the boat. My boat is too small for blue water, but sailing on large lakes in moderate to strong winds can require sail changes or going into the cabin for a jacket, etc. I'll have to look into the Simrad.
The tiller pilot is great to hold you into the wind when hoisting the main or reefing. I checked with West Marine, my daughter is a store manager there, and they carry Simrad and Raymarine tiller Pilots. Abo
It is retractable but not easily. You have to slack off the backstay to relieve the pressure on the forestay then disconnect the bob stay and whiskers stays and remove the fid that holds it in place at the Sampson posts
With the help of a remote controller a hydraulic pump on the motor runs the ram under the foredeck which lift the post and retract the bowsprit by folding it in half and neatly stowing it out of sight.Some BCC do not have this expensive option prone to failure.
@@mostlyguesses8385 the actual boat is 28 ft. With the bowsprit and boomkin included it's around 37 and a half. I always say if you live aboard its 28, if you are parking it 37

Im gonna rig a bowsprit for look, funnily marinas want 30ft for liveaboards. With bridges being often under 30ft I wonder if a long 30x30 jib using bowsprit and similar mainsail so yes a squat 60 foot long boat (hull just 50) would be genius as a cruiser to move in light wind yet get under bridges.... what's the stubbiest looking sail one can find photo of? ... Catamarans have stubby masts compared to what they could take for this bridge problem, so sorta are undermasted. . or do some people have 3 30ft masts every 20ft never seen that.....- Alex, Galveston
Gorgeous boat and what I call a 'Go any where' boat. Nice vid. Interesting though seemingly no mention of the main'sle being Marconi instead of the typical gaff rig. (no judgement on my part. They both have their ups and downs) This might seem petty but such a seaworthy boat: What's up with the slapping halyards and flogging boom cover ? :)
Nice wooden mast and boom. Where are those?! But this ship is in a nice condition. What you really want, is a ship that has been in this condition from launch. Paint job and small repairs EACH year. That's why I wonder where the original rig is. Maybe this is the original, then it's younger than I thought.
I'd go to Cornwall and get a Falmouth Working Boat not some American design copying one. I don't know why Hess chose the name Bristol Channel, that kinda implies some connection with the pilot cutters of that name which these look nothing like.
Why not get a Contessa 32 for half the price and twice the offshore performance? Or an S&S 34? Or if 28 ft, a Twister. I never got it. A boomkin? A bowsprit? Why?
A 28 ft boat that requires a crane to put into and out of the water is hardley a pocket cruiser. 20 ft or less would be more likely to fit that description- trailerable is a definite crtieria.
.. yeah my Ericson 25 at 5500 pounds was heaviest boat theyd make trailers for, and basically no one trailers em and 3500 really is feasible limit so hunters and MacGregor's stopped there.... The sad truth is a catamaran with cabin probably small is best design but only way to get those is from a kit and I'm too lazy .. see jarcat 6 catamaran just 2000lbs.... Till then am stuck with my Ericson 25 which yesterday got me thru storm I dumbly sailed into, size matters, just rolled for hour like maniac and cursed and hope it kept going north and it did phew,, , , ,.
As an owner of a Pacific Seacraft and wanting to buy a BCC there are some similarities but the BCC is heavier and carries more sail. But most importantly it has a much longer waterline so it is faster. My boat is 27’ the BCC is 28’ and will sail 50 more miles a day more than my boat! Also much more room on deck where my boat is a bit tight. I will be sailing a BCC in a few month on a 3200 mile voyage to deliver it for a friend but I will be able to give it a true test!
Oh dear, the belaying pin is not a quick release mechanism for halyards. They need to be a tight fit anyway if you're not to lose them plus belaying anything other than a flag halyard to a rail is bad practice, haven't you seen the leeward shrouds go slack?
I'm 73yo and bound to a wheelchair now, but I'm sure that I could have been very happy to go solo cruising over the world's oceans in this little gem! Sadly, the price, though certainly justified, will put it beyond most young people.
I’m 69 and sailing a 27’ er and yes it does require some agility but it is not beyond anyone with even below normal range of motion. I even have arthritis and can do it solo. I just sailed 4000 miles from Mexico to the South Pacific. And lucky me I get to sail someone else’s BCC to the South Pacific in a few months! A great way for me to experience that boat because I have been thinking of upgrading from my 27’ er to a BCC 28’ er!

My grandfather planned a trip around the world. He told me between a 30 and 40 foot boat was best because it was just big enough to fit between waves

My parents friends had a 28' Bristol Cutter we used to go on holiday on. The owners sailed it long distance until they got too old.

Very similar, to a Maurice Griffiths-designed WaterWitch. Many were built in the UK, plans and spec. still available.
As a youngster in the 70's I sailed with my parents in their steel Water Witch ketch called Blue Witch

That BCC is a 1976 number 13. Vessels name MYWAY. I built her. From a bare hull. A long time ago.

There is a Ailboat very similar to the BCC, I had a look at once, interior a bit open plan , poor headroom, fussy Sailplan and a very low price an Outstanding Condition. Could I live with it? Yes. Would I want to live with it ? A resounding Nope ! so I walked away and got the much better Endeavour 32 long keel shallow Draft at less than half the price - with a not run in yet Yanmar diesel, Barrier coated, plastic Portholes replaced with stainless steel storm ones with storm covers and insect screens, plus 5 new unused Sails worth more than I paid for the boat. Allmit needed was moving to a Boatyard, a full checkover and Service, plus a decent new oversized Anchor fitted to all high quality triple galvanised chain. It was too easy to fall put of too high V berths, so the pilot berth to aft port side won the job. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
Nice tour, although it follows the Sailing World philosophy of "They have not reviewed a boat they didn't like". Deeper insight would be fascinating. Topics such as equipment access( engine, tanks, through hulls). Electrical and electronics? On this BCC was there an entire locker filled with sand paper and varnish?

Enjoyed the tour! That is a nice little sailboat. But does it have an auto pilot? I'm also wondering, was that a wet head? You didn't mention or show a shower attachment.
On my BCC the forward cabin sole lifts up and there's a shower grate underneath. I believe most all are set up that way.

@@scyz2807 as to the autopilot, I use a Simrad tiller pilot, cost about $600 about 10 years ago. For offshore I use an Aries wind vane.
@@letthewindblowme2593 I have a 20 foot Paceship P2-20 that only has a tiller and I have wondered about getting an auto pilot that would work with a tiller. I solo sail pretty much all the time so there are times when it would be VERY good to let an auto pilot steer the boat. My boat is too small for blue water, but sailing on large lakes in moderate to strong winds can require sail changes or going into the cabin for a jacket, etc. I'll have to look into the Simrad.
The tiller pilot is great to hold you into the wind when hoisting the main or reefing. I checked with West Marine, my daughter is a store manager there, and they carry Simrad and Raymarine tiller Pilots. Abo

Something I always wondered with these boats: is the bowsprite retracktable or fixed?
It is retractable but not easily. You have to slack off the backstay to relieve the pressure on the forestay then disconnect the bob stay and whiskers stays and remove the fid that holds it in place at the Sampson posts
With the help of a remote controller a hydraulic pump on the motor runs the ram under the foredeck which lift the post and retract the bowsprit by folding it in half and neatly stowing it out of sight.Some BCC do not have this expensive option prone to failure.

@@mostlyguesses8385 the actual boat is 28 ft. With the bowsprit and boomkin included it's around 37 and a half. I always say if you live aboard its 28, if you are parking it 37

Im gonna rig a bowsprit for look, funnily marinas want 30ft for liveaboards. With bridges being often under 30ft I wonder if a long 30x30 jib using bowsprit and similar mainsail so yes a squat 60 foot long boat (hull just 50) would be genius as a cruiser to move in light wind yet get under bridges.... what's the stubbiest looking sail one can find photo of? ... Catamarans have stubby masts compared to what they could take for this bridge problem, so sorta are undermasted. . or do some people have 3 30ft masts every 20ft never seen that.....- Alex, Galveston
Gorgeous boat and what I call a 'Go any where' boat. Nice vid. Interesting though seemingly no mention of the main'sle being Marconi instead of the typical gaff rig. (no judgement on my part. They both have their ups and downs) This might seem petty but such a seaworthy boat: What's up with the slapping halyards and flogging boom cover ? :)

What you need to remember is that these pilot cutters were sailing out of England in the 17 -1800,s not that Lyle Hess wasn’t a great naval architect.

Nice wooden mast and boom. Where are those?! But this ship is in a nice condition. What you really want, is a ship that has been in this condition from launch. Paint job and small repairs EACH year. That's why I wonder where the original rig is. Maybe this is the original, then it's younger than I thought.

I'd go to Cornwall and get a Falmouth Working Boat not some American design copying one. I don't know why Hess chose the name Bristol Channel, that kinda implies some connection with the pilot cutters of that name which these look nothing like.

Why not get a Contessa 32 for half the price and twice the offshore performance? Or an S&S 34? Or if 28 ft, a Twister. I never got it. A boomkin? A bowsprit? Why?
And yes, it has nothing at all to do with Bristol Channel pilot cutters. I'm reminded of a 70s car with fake wood glued on the sides.

A 28 ft boat that requires a crane to put into and out of the water is hardley a pocket cruiser. 20 ft or less would be more likely to fit that description- trailerable is a definite crtieria.
.. yeah my Ericson 25 at 5500 pounds was heaviest boat theyd make trailers for, and basically no one trailers em and 3500 really is feasible limit so hunters and MacGregor's stopped there.... The sad truth is a catamaran with cabin probably small is best design but only way to get those is from a kit and I'm too lazy .. see jarcat 6 catamaran just 2000lbs.... Till then am stuck with my Ericson 25 which yesterday got me thru storm I dumbly sailed into, size matters, just rolled for hour like maniac and cursed and hope it kept going north and it did phew,, , , ,.

looks like a Pacific Sea Craft
As an owner of a Pacific Seacraft and wanting to buy a BCC there are some similarities but the BCC is heavier and carries more sail. But most importantly it has a much longer waterline so it is faster. My boat is 27’ the BCC is 28’ and will sail 50 more miles a day more than my boat! Also much more room on deck where my boat is a bit tight. I will be sailing a BCC in a few month on a 3200 mile voyage to deliver it for a friend but I will be able to give it a true test!

Oh dear, the belaying pin is not a quick release mechanism for halyards. They need to be a tight fit anyway if you're not to lose them plus belaying anything other than a flag halyard to a rail is bad practice, haven't you seen the leeward shrouds go slack?
The interior space would be suitable only to the young solo sailor, with flexible attitudes, and joints! But younger people wouldn't afford it.
I'm 73yo and bound to a wheelchair now, but I'm sure that I could have been very happy to go solo cruising over the world's oceans in this little gem! Sadly, the price, though certainly justified, will put it beyond most young people.
I live aboard and cruise my Bristol Channel cutter and I'll be 76 years old in January.
I’m 69 and sailing a 27’ er and yes it does require some agility but it is not beyond anyone with even below normal range of motion. I even have arthritis and can do it solo. I just sailed 4000 miles from Mexico to the South Pacific. And lucky me I get to sail someone else’s BCC to the South Pacific in a few months! A great way for me to experience that boat because I have been thinking of upgrading from my 27’ er to a BCC 28’ er!

Love all you guy's. I am 60 and still haven't bought my first boat. People think I'm nuts wanting to learn to sail, and liveaboard a boat at my age, but I'm doing it anyway.
