    Hey guys, really like what you are doing here. Don’t have your full story, but I’ll go back and check it out...the beauty of UA-cam! We downsized between boats 2 and 3 and loved it. Boat 4 is much bigger than the others, but I’m sure I’ll be back to trailerable someday...so many benefits. And thanks for supporting the book! Makes me smile so big when I see people making it happen. Hope we run into you someplace warm. Best, Nick

Thanks for sharing your philosophies and it'd be great to bump into you somewhere in the Caribbean. We should be slowing working our way down island this winter. Cheers, Ryan

    When I started to watch your channel I really thought you were going to do some serious offshore sailing and exploring the world. After selling the HR, making this purchase, and talking about trailering to avoid the Panama Canal I'm skeptical you will ever do much adventuring on the seas.

    One thing I've learnt from sailing for 50 years is that when you upsize or downsize in a boat, you gain or lose from where the boat is biggest. In the middle. They all taper at the ends. It will also be narrower, and far more weight sensitive and much slower. Also the motion of a small boat will be more violent than bigger boat, and as it has less freeboard it will take more water aboard.
    What is the hull speed of your new boat? 3 knots, maybe 4? So any passage you might make has just doubled in length compared to your previous boat.
    How will you store a tender? Can't do without one.
    Remove the diesel and use an electric? Look at the issues Sailing Uma have had with theirs. Five rainy days and they were turning off stuff to make sure they had enough power to dock. No problems with the motor, it's all been installation and charging issues. Bit hard to tip in a can of electricity when you run a bit low. Not a safe proposition for a passage making sailing boat.
    You had the right boat, and now you have the wrong boat. Sorry to sound a bit harsh, but I just don't get it.

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 6 років тому

      Hull Speed 6.12. It is no tank like the Flicka ... not the fastest boat either, but will sail rings around that other tank. Compared to HR it is only 1 knot less. Sailing Uma is not greatest example, nor even really comparable as they plan to get outboard electric. I do wonder about keeping up with their battery bank though, but am sure they will have much less trouble with electric outboad than any diesel.
      I do agree it is the wrong boat ... for me. From what we know of them through this channel, it sounds like great boat for them, but only time will tell.

    • @flamethrower5794
      @flamethrower5794 6 років тому +4

      What's an outboard electric ? Not familiar with that.
      There is the Uma video where Dan was taking shelter from the hurricane and after had to wait for the wind to change to sail out of the channel as he had 20% in the batteries. Which, to me, means he would not have been able to move the boat during the storm. I know lithiums are way better than lead/acid, but I would be very wary of changing away from a proven power system. There are just too many potential situations where you need all the power you can get, and immediately, or everything can be lost.

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 6 років тому

      It is an outboard engine run by electric, they have been using one for their dinghy. You can see it in ep #36 with more info about it in description below with website link. It can even be charged via solar while using it. As stated though, worry they are relying on solar bit too much, which is not always available to keep battery bank topped up.
      ua-cam.com/video/q4yuqgVifKQ/v-deo.html
      Also you do realize some sail with no engine at all their entire life ... not something I would recommend, but it is possible.

    • @MrScoresby
      @MrScoresby 6 років тому +8

      There is an alternative; a small diesel/ Veg oil generator to top up the batteries under adverse weather conditions. It could be used sparingly to reduce the required fuel for long passages. the old guy Bert

    I've owned a Flicka for a decade and sailed on a Falmouth Cutter several times. They are similar in a number of ways but the Falmouth has a better interior, and as you know, better numbers. While both a are trailerable, they are actually transportable. Even with a mast raising system, the rigging on both is massive and probably best to use a yard to lift the mast into place and get some help on the rigging. It also will save the trailer if launched in salt water. It is hard to over-estimate how seaworthy these boats are. Time for you to dig out the Larry and Lynn Pardey 'Serafynn' books as the Falmouth Cutter is virtually the same (as far as I could tell have seen the original boat) if you haven't already. A great, great choice. They track so well in the ocean. You will also need a 3/4 ton truck if you are moving it around. Or rent something if just moving it off season.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 років тому +5

      Any chance you share your wisdom on a blog? We'd love to read more about your experiences on both. The self-sufficient sailor was the catalyst for this move as it felt like we finally found some sailors that fit our values. We do plan on launching at a yard as our trailer's frame isn't the biggest confidence booster. And paying the $200-300 will save a lot of headache when it comes to putting up the mast. Thanks for the comment and for your insights!

    Don't let any of the comments get you down. You still appeal to a great number of us. We still haven't heard all of your true mission statement. Downsizing for the Big Adventure? Being responsible for your footprints on this planet? Experiences are the more important things I wonder if you could put all of that into one mission statement? I've lived tiny with my wife for nearly 32 years. Many times we lived in ginormous houses. But we managed to raise for long hairy legged Boys in just under 600 square feet between the house and just a few hundred square feet in an RV or a sailboat. And they are all responsible, honest adventurers. Thank you so much for all your honesty and your sharing please continue to produce these videos we absolutely love them! A lot of sailing vlogs are often a person with a dream, dragging his or her loved ones begrudgingly along. As this is obviously not a sailing vlog, but a couple that want to live their lives producing videos for people to pay to live vicariously through, I can’t tell who is dragging whom. I think they are made for each other. Oh no, another teak deck! Still entertaining to watch guys. I can’t wait for the title match between Ryan and Logan Paul.

    I am still having a tough time with your choice. You kept saying how you wanted to sail to Hawaii and beyond. You finally had the boat to do it. After so so so much hard work. You take it to the Caribbean once, then sell it ?? And for what another project (although it does look really nice inside) that will not be ready for you to live your dreams out for another who know how long ?? I just think you should have enjoyed your hard work for longer and maybe got caught in a few storms, where you would appreciate the size and space. Honestly you could have saved yourself a year of work and just rented a sail boat for the trip you took.

      They're not going to cross any oceans. Look at the bigger plan here- buy land, sail a bit. These savvy marketers are using the boat story to earn what looks to be 6K+ a month (and growing) to buy land, build a tiny house and do some occasional sailing. They have stated that this is the plan.

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 6 років тому +5

      Mister Professor - if you think they are savvy marketers, than they have failed. They could have simply bought land and built tiny house to begin with from money they saved up for far cheaper than buying their first boat. So savvy that even after 2 years they still would not have recouped their initial investment even at your excessive 6k estimate. Let alone all the other expenses they have paid since than.
      They are living their dream and simply sharing their experiences that anyone else can as well.

    Yup, you were right. Many won't get it. She's a beauty! Like I said on the last video, I get it. Had friends that sailed the hell out of their Flicka 20 and saw more of the world than most of your viewers. Anchorages are full of people trying to fix their systems and stuff. As you know, and my wife and I are finding out, having less "stuff" is very freeing. My favorite fable is.....
    Two close childhood friends grew up and went their separate ways. One became a humble monk, the other became a rich and powerful adviser to the King.
    Many years later they again meet. The adviser to the King (in his fine robes) took pity on the thin, and shabby monk. Seeking to help his old friend, he says:
    "You know, if you could learn to cater to the King, you wouldn't have to live on rice and beans."
    To which the monk replied, "If you could learn to live on rice and beans, you wouldn't have to cater to the King."
    Right now, our "King" is our mortgage and too much stuff. We will be free of the "King" by the end of this year.

      beachplumb. Yea it sure could, but space doesn’t always create more money. I absolutely love their new boat but I’m curious about the added cost of upkeep, how does that factor into the overall cost. I applaud them for being frugal, both monetary and practically. I myself would need a bigger boat because I’m bigger, I’m 6’5 and 285 business pounds so a smaller boat wouldn’t be practical for me.

    Hi. I am an livaboard have been for the last 30 years. My first boat was an 22 ft trailsailer and had a lot of fun with congrats on your new boat.. The best thing trailer boats have to ofer are no marina fees/unlimited sail areas and you can change location quickly. downside is lack of head room. unless you get an 25 up to 30 foot boat.

At least they got the guts and grit to go for their dreams. I also will have you know that uma has not turned on their motor for a long time now. So ease up and lat the people do what they want. Deja Vue on the authentic antique wow feelings. Years back had been searching for a lake front cottage on the cheap. Found the pot of gold. BC fir walls , oak floors, huge fieldstone fireplace on unpoluted lake in the Laurentions. Came with a Sprite sailboat. The feeling was love at first sight. I know what you are thinking seeing this boat. There is a "soul" to old cabins and boats. Yes they are tons of work but looking back when all that is left is memories, which ones do you want? That is a much better boat!! I was a bit involved in the restoration of one of the original Hess boats called Renegade back in the 90's. They are real performers.
    Heavier displacement is much better than a lighter boat. The Falmoth is 5 times the boat that the flicka is..
    consider running vegetable oil in the engine?? about 80 percent less carbon emissions..
    Congrats on finally getting a GOOD boat!!
    only one thing to look out for: be careful running downwind in heavy seas, as they can pitch pole. in heavy weather, better to lie a hull, or heave to in a falmoth. They are also wet beating to weather, but you get penetration and speed. Lots of mods are possible to improve it's performance to weather, that is good to start with.
    have fun!!!

    Oooo you guys are getting some feedback aren't ya... Heres some more 😁 I lived on a folk boat for ten years. 25 foot on the deck, like 18 on the waterline. Perfectly doable. And totally blue water capable, as is a falmouth cutter. Congratulations on your beautiful boat. My brother lives on his boat in Trinidad, he says that Americans don't think its a real boat if its under 40 feet, but get this: manual water pump and head, hand start engine, no complicated shit to go wrong at exactly the wrong tine/place etc etc. Small boat small problems. Anyone that thinks a Falmouth Cutter isn't blue water is batshit crazy. Good luck with it guys I'll be watching 😊

    With a small boat you can get away sooner and cheaper and get into more places . They can be as seaworthy as any boat and maybe easier to handle when it gets bad . However as a live-aboard they are a real challenge . I have a very fast 28 foot boat that I cruise once in a while . Big enough that getting stuck a few rainy days is no discomfort , fast enough to get there before much bigger boats . As long as they have no illusions about what they will be able to take with them they are good . Having said that it is amazing the comfort you can get in such a small space these days .

  • @svbarryduckworth628
    @svbarryduckworth628 6 років тому +3

    I didn't even bring up this boat before as I didnt think any would be available even outside of your budget. Of the Hess designs it isn't exactly the easiest to procure, by any means... always a premium on these, even when in rougher shape.
    But I suppose I underestimated your ability to just cold-call every owner of record, and your ability to negotiate s sweetheart deal to boot.
    We had to beg our own HR-35 off of reluctant sellers a couple of yeats back, so I should have known better.
    I will be interested in the next video when you tell us the price breakdown. We got an awesome deal financially, but had to leave some other things on the table with the conditions of sale, notably the boat's name never being changed, ever. We are also returning their hand-built sails as we are done with them. We just got a new mainsail in tanbark, and the old main will be going back to the former owners, probably to display on the wall of their huge artist's loft condo.
    I think any extra money you spend on this boat will be money in the bank as time goes on with reduced marina (and everything else) fees, and never ever needing to be in a yard on the hard ever again if yiu olay your cards right. We all know how expensive that can be.
    One of the first things you should build on your home base property after a tiny cabin to live in is a shed large enough to work on the boat inside, and perhaps store the trailer indoors too, as that will extend its lifespan.
    All in all I think you are on the right track, even though I think we could never go that small ourselves. It is doable, and financially a good position to put yourselves in.
    Now I will sit back and read all the haters rip on you guys. That should be worth the price of admission right there. Hahahaha! :D

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 років тому

      SV Barry Duckworth I guess that’d be the entertainment value to our series is reading the armchairs ‘insights’. 😆We’d like to eventually build a boat shed to store the boat but I can’t imagine doing it in the next 3-4 years. The property plus tiny house idea won’t really come to fruition for a couple of years. There’s no denying the Falmouth is small but we’ve come to realize sea isn’t where we go to find comfort. Comfort comes at a huge premium on water and for us we’re doing this for the challenge. Eventually we’ll spend 9 months a year ‘roughing’ it on board our tiny boat bobbing around the Caribbean or Pacific then depending upon where we are store the boat for hurricane season and go relax in the mountains for 3 months. That’s the plan. We’ll see how things go

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 6 років тому +2

      Abandon Comfort: A roof over your head when doing fast boat refits is not really a comfort item. It makes things just go faster. You are not at the mercy of weather and temperature with a tool like inside storage
      Time is the one thing none of us has any more than anyone else. We all get 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, and 365 days in a calendar year.
      Screwing around waiting for decent weather to do epoxy work, or paint can blow weeks and even make you miss the start of a season, or maybe a weather window to start your next trip.
      A basic shed to enclose a small boat is not much of a project or cost, even if it is just a pole shed with only a roof for now and walls later.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 років тому +1

      SV Barry Duckworth agreed. We did the last refit in the elements and you remember how that panned our with the deck. Luckily, no deck work is needed on the new gal. Our current boat yard situation is temporary so we won’t be building a boat garage here.

I put an electric drive in my 23’er and like it very much. I have electrified boats up to 40’. With the new 3 phase motors it is very practical, regenerates much better and with a genset you have a hybred.

    Spotty to break this to you but these are NOT blue-water boats. They may be fairly strong, small boats but only fools buy the boats you have listed for true off-shore, long distance, living. Too many reasons why that you seem to have missed. The smaller the displacement-sailboat the slower it sails, and long off-shore passages are not just time consuming, they expose you to more calms or storms that you can not avoid. Water and food storage, gear, tools, etc. etc. are very limited, and so on and on. Room for two people AND a dog? Fess up. You want a trailerable boat so you can costal cruise without all that long distance sailing to get where you want to go. At least you are going to live up to your title...abandon comfort.

    • @AbandonComfort

      LittleJohnny47 Cib oh the armchairs will eat this up. You make some valid points with regards to having to worry more about weight & speed but pretty much everything else you said is false. Sure they are blue water boats. Small? Sure. More risk of exposure to bad weather? Sure. But it is perfectly well suited for the job. Even John Vigor included it in his book Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere.

    You guys may want to consider adding Kegel exercises to your daily workout routine. They may be extremely helpful when you are hit by that first real blue water storm in your tiny boat :)
    In all seriousness wishing you the best of luck on your new adventure!

    Can’t wait to see all of that boat. Looks super sweet. I’m a day sailor and occasional overnighter with a trailerable sailboat. Actually just bought another sailboat in NJ also. Going to get it in a couple weeks.

    Just wondering why you would not want to transit the Panama Canal? I think that would be a great adventure. You're on a sailboat, what's the rush?

    • @JelmerAchterkamp
      @JelmerAchterkamp 6 років тому

      You can only go trough the Panama canal if you can make a minimum average speed of 6 knots.

    • @jamesford8315
      @jamesford8315 6 років тому

      I didn't know that, so I looked it up. Don't mean to be a troll but the minimum speed is 5 knots. www.pancanal.com/common/maritime/forms/4352-ENG-201211.pdf

    • @JelmerAchterkamp
      @JelmerAchterkamp 6 років тому

      That was in 2012. Noonsite say's that it will be 8 knots in 2018.

    • @JelmerAchterkamp
      @JelmerAchterkamp 6 років тому

      The locks will most likely be passed with a small commercial ship. As per the rules and regulations of the PCA, in order to complete a transit in this timeframe yachts are required to have a minimum speed of 8 knots. If a yacht can not meet this minimum speed and can therefore not make the lockage with the commercial ship, there will be additional charges incurred which are included in the buffer fee.

      Back in '78, I spent two weeks aboard a 22' S2 6.8 with my sister, her husband, his sister, my sister's first child, 2 yrs old, and my sister was 6 months pregnant.
      Now THAT is crowded. :-D

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 років тому

      Symphony Farm we won’t be renaming her, technically. Her name is english girl, not jacquelina. Which we used to call old Luci our Swedish gal so English works for us. We will be doing a new name plate on the interior though. And of course keeping the bell 🙂

      5dd armchairs hate when people go against the grain, especially when it’s all that’s been sold to them over the years. It’s such a shame too because the last thing we’d want to do is upsize, promote some soul-sucking yacht corporation and then the armchairs would be happy because it’d be more of the same. Little do they know we’re doing this for them. To show how affordable it can be to go smaller.
