    I absolutely adore my Ancient Greek and Roman coins. My oldest is an Ionian, Miletus obol with a Lion on the obverse and a stellate pattern on the reverse. It’s from the late 6th-5th centuries BC. And NGC graded it MS Strike: 5/5 and Surface: 5/5. Every time I look at it as well as my other ancients, I am transported back to the ancient world.

    I much rather talk to collectors than investors. I have nothing in common with investors. For me this is a love and passion, not just a money making tool. I wish the investors would go play with bullion or cyrpto or stocks or other things which are usually more lucrative anyway. If I've ever made an investor feel unwelcome, I'm not at all sorry.

      Well, we need to have in mind that dealers themselves do engage in a bit of speculating, and these guys are the ones that go through the work of getting us our coins, so a bit of a stimulus for a monetary reward must exist.
      That being said, I do agree with you, I dont have a whole lot of love for people who just buy a coin as an asset, hoard it, and just try to skim a profit in any way possible

      @@ClassicalNumismatics This is true, but most dealers I've met are hobbyists too or at least began that way. And those are awesome people. There are also dealers who are horrible to talk to and are bitter. It's a full spectrum.

      @@markp44288 I went to a local coin show last week and spent an hour browsing one ancient dealers wares. He spent the whole time telling me about the histories behind coins that I picked up. That is a good kind of dealer.. He made me more interested in collecting by sharing the passion. And yes, my pocket was lighter in dollars but heavier in ancients as a result.

    I think your classifications as hobbyist, collector and coin investor is quite accurate and extremely helpful.
    As a coin hobbyist I feel the same - if I break even or make a small profit, that is great but I accept there will be a good portion I may make a modest loss. As a collector of modern coins, I collect American Innovation dollars knowing that at best is I will make a very small profit IF I hold them and keep them in good condition.
    And love the history of Puellae Faustinianae, never knew this!!!

    I collect for hobby today and something nice to leave my nephew one day. This is the 3rd time I watched this video. It's the best on this subject I' ve found. This time because I've built up a nice collection over a couple of years and am ready to begin looking for more important pieces. Nothing too crazy but I'm still missing a Julius Caesar denarius for example. I started late and wanted to make up for lost time and your videos have helped me in many ways. Ty again. BTW, that Faustina II is gorgeous.

    I always thought my complete original vinyl collection of 70s bands 'Smokie' and 'The Rubettes' would be worth quite a few gold drachma by now - unfortunately that is very far from the case - at present - but I am still hopeful.

    I stumbled upon the Roman inflation earlier this year in a history course on UA-cam, which made me want to trade my financial assets for physical ones, which led me back to ancient coins. I don't expect to profit but at least I can touch history and enjoy my small but growing collection if things go bad.

    I would buy a lot of gold roman coins, because i love gold coins, the mind blowing history, and because romans had a big presence in my city Braga (Bracara augusta) and also use to mine gold here in the north of portugal (tresminas) , if you visit North of Portugal you can visit roman gold mine very well preserved and see tunnels and the way they carry the gold etc... But i am also thinking in this like a investment against inflation of Euro(i think Euro cloud lose all value in the future do to hyper inflation), a way to hide money from government, and a way to store value. All this doing a thing that i like, even if i lose some money trying to sell ( and i would only sell if i really needed the money) i think i will not regret. That is what i am thinking right now, about my strategy.

    It's sad that some people treat ancient coins just as investments and send up prices, making the coins less accessible to those who collect for the love of ancient coins.

    • @herodotus6235
      @herodotus6235 2 роки тому +5

      Yes. Although that is not in itself a bad thing. The real worry is that as more and more people become interested in the ancient world, prices will skyrocket and eventually the market will dry up - there is only a finite number of ancient coins. This happened with Classical sculpture 100 years ago - while just 100 aristocrats in Europe were collecting, there was a thriving market in London and elsewhere. Nowadays virtually everyone would have a Roman statue if they could, and so the market doesn’t exist any more. When a statue comes on sale it goes for 45 million. This is slowly happening to ancient coins. Good for collectors with big collections perhaps, but not not newcomers.

    I went with the puellae faustinianae simply because it had the best preserved details in my opinion, so in a way to me it all boils down to the condition than anything else... even if its a rare yet worn out ancient coin, such coins wont peak my interest.

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  6 місяців тому +1

      Dont you think maybe this is a simplistic way of looking at ancient coins? Yes, you could just collect them for condition and art, but you are missing 80% of what makes them interesting.

    • @THESPATHARIOS
      @THESPATHARIOS 6 місяців тому +2

      I’m specifically talking about those coins that are rare yet in bad condition. Even if they have a story to them to me the aesthetic element plays an important part in my selection. If a rare coin has a compelling story but looks like a lump of melted metal would you buy it?

    Collecting is spending money without spending. That leaves open, all there is to collect! In short I really don't want to know how much my coins and paper money are worth. And of course buying is easy, but selling not necessarily so straightforward. Ask any dealer.
