Protestant Talks to Catholic Experts on Mary (w/ William Albrecht and Fr. Christiaan Kappes)

  • When it comes to issues that divide Protestants and Catholics, Mariology is a big one. To Catholics, it seems Protestants are disrespecting the Mother of God, and to Protestants, it seems like Catholics might be nearing the edge, if not going over the edge, of idolatry. Because of this tense dynamic, honest, open conversations between Catholics and Protestants on Mary can be hard to come by. In this episode, I talk with William Albrecht and Fr. Christiaan Kappes about Mary. In this conversation, we focus on what the Bible has to say about Mary. Often times, conversations on Mary center around tradition, and while that's a worthwhile conversation, if Protestants and Catholics want to find common ground on Mary, it's essential that we look to the Bible and see what Scripture teaches about Mary. Is it enough to merit the Marian dogmas? Are the Marian dogmas Biblical or are they all blown way out of proportion? After all, what does the Bible even say about Mary? These are all questions that we tackle head on in this conversation.

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a UA-cam channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

I'm a convert from Protestantism and even though I've done a lot of research on Mariology, I've never heard it explained with the same approach that you used. Catholicism saved me from leaving Christianity altogether and in turn she taught me about typology which renewed my love for the Bible. Pardon me to comment but I would like to point out a very significant difference with Orthodoxy here, for whom it may be of interest. "Conceived without sin?" The so called "immaculate conception". That's not acceptable according to Orthodox dogma. One of the main and very very serious and important differences from Catholicism. If Mary is conceived without sin, that makes her kind of super-human. Thus, God is like he is disgusted by human nature and found a way to bypass this by creating a predestined superhuman. Also, the value of Mary diminishes, as she seems like pre-designed for this. Like a robot. But how could the true human nature be conceived and healed by God if that was the case? This is so wrong. Contrary to all this false dogma, Orthodoxy claims that Virgin Mary was a human being exactly like all of us, conceived in the same way as all of us. God took his human nature by a true human being like all of us, not a super-human, not a robot specially designed for this. A human being that was not pre-designed and pre-ordained to do so, but was free to accept or not accept. God just pre-knew, not predetermined ,that this normal in all human being would be the peak of virtues and clarity, the most holy human that never committed sin even by thought, the only worthy of carrying Him for nine months and being called His mother forever.. Many Orthodox fathers agree that this was the only reason He chose the Israelites as his people, because he pre-knew that Mary would come from them. And she was absolutely free to choose. She was asked by Archangel Gabriel. And she responded "here is the servant of God" i.e I take responsibility with my freedom and obey with my freedom to you God, to give birth to the Son of God and Second person of the Holy trinity the eternal God. Thus she became the bridge that connected the humanity with God, through which God descended from Heavens and human goes up to Heavens.

@Harley Mann yes, and the typologies between Mary and Eve (conceived without sin), & Mary & the Ark of the Covenant (made of the purest materials) both point to Mary as being immaculately conceived. I've also heard it said that to be in a sinless state is to be more "fully human" as that is how we are intended to be!
I honestly think that when it comes to Mary (and some other things), the Catholic Church has a deeper understanding than do the E. Orthodox.

Great show. Kudos to all involved. As a Protestant I am more and more drawn to the Gospel of our Lord as I learn to engage with Catholic and Orthodox traditions and theology. • @algomez8563
      @algomez8563 3 роки тому

The Body of Christ is the church exposed by St. Paul with a body of presbiters that serve as priests. You can see clearly that some new doctrines put salvation in peril. Mormons and Jehovas witnesses for example.
Adventists are judaizants who want to keep the law just as the christians who were corrected in the council of Jerusalem.

It was the misunderstanding of Mary, taught by churches I've been to, that brought me back to the Catholic Church. Mary is one of the most important and divine people in the bible and her place in the heavenly realm is undeniable. I can't understand how people who have done an in depth biblical study of Mary are missing this.

Interesting point on the theotokos dogma from the council of Ephesus: it was used to to bolster the identity of Jesus. To call Mary the mother of God is to make the claim that her son is God. Given the many gnostic and Arian heresies of the time that denied Jesus’s divinity, using scripture to prove that Mary is the mother of God leads to the conclusion that Jesus himself is God.

Indeed. This is why one of Mary's many honorifics is Destroyer of All Heresies.
Heresies about Christ come in the form of attacks on His full divinity or His full humanity (and sometimes both), but through the Gospel accounts of Mary, God safeguards the truth that He is fully Divine (conceived by the Holy Spirit) and fully man (born of the Virgin Mary).
Proper Mariology is foundational to proper Christology.

Christiaan as I can now see and understand better where they are coming from. Well done! However I cannot see how someone could arrive at the Marian Dogmas without the magisterium. My stand is that if the Bible is not clear about something, it certainly shouldn’t be dogmatized. I still very much appreciate this conversation as I begin to cherish Mary more and more...
Love the approach of seeing scripture through the lenses of the people it was primary given to. I believe it is necessary for understanding.
However the question that came up during this video is: Is the god who used the apostles to give us the New Testament able to communicate through scripture in such a way with us today that scripture itself is clear about things that should be dogma? I believe HE is able.
To my Catholic brothers and sisters a sincere question: without the magisterium would you still hold on to the Marian dogmas? If so: What convinces you? Would love to hear that!

    Hey Austin and everyone ,
I just wanted to tell you that the word "on the contrary" used the Apostol Luke in 11:27 is μενούνγε (menoonwe)
The same word was used in
Rome 10:18 , Rome 9:20 , Philippians 3:8 having the meaning "of course" "indeed" etc.
Jesus actually answers (according to ancient greek ofc) "Of course , but blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it"
He replied that way to point that blessing and God's grace are not iherited by birth or biological relation to someone but from faith in the word of God(hear the word of God) and actions on it(and obey it).
Μενούνγε (not μενούν) is made this way
    Μεν+ουν+γε
When they all come together they enhance the meaming of the word they are added to.
Μενούνγε=indeed but ("but" comes from μενουν and "indeed" from γε)
And Luke 11:27 made Luke 1:48 come to pass
Some times i feel so blessed being born greek 🙏🙏🙏 Praise the LORD that he is good and that his rachem endures forever

I would like to share a passage from the Old Testament which describes the virginity of Mary:
In the Old Testament we see a reference to Mary's perpetual virginity in a passage which describes a gate through which only the Lord could pass and shall remain closed.
    ▪︎EZEKIEL 44:2-3
    2. The Lord said to me: This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut.
    3. Only the prince, because he is a prince, may sit in it to eat food before the Lord; he shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and shall go out by the same way.

St Ambrose and St Augustine are among the Church Fathers who honored Our Blessed Mother as the “Gate of the Temple of Jerusalem” that faced to the East.
So Jesus Christ’s body is the new and definitive Temple, that He himself would rebuild in three days. Remember Jesus’ words and St John’s Gospel: _”Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up (...). But the temple he had spoken of was his body”_ (John 2, 19.21).
Therefore, Mary is the gate of the Temple that faces to the east, the way by which the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity assumed a human body and became flesh, dwelling among us (John 1, 14).
The Temple and the Gate of the Temple. That’s the mystery of Incarnation taken to the most rigorous biblical consequences.
Notice: that gate should - it is God’s order, not a recommendation - remain eternally shut.

Many saints in the East have also held views similar to the immaculate conception. If indeed Mary is the new Eve, as Jesus is the new Adam, it is fitting for both likewise to have been born without the stain of sin.

@Dissonant Timbres again the claim that it's just roman nonsense is contradicted by your own saints and bishops. This is mean-spirited ignorance on your part:
"The Orthodox Church calls Mary all-holy, immaculate, free from actual sin. The Orthodox Church has never made any formal and definitive pronouncement on the matter of the Immaculate Conception. In the past, individual Orthodox theologians have made statements that, if not definitively affirming the Doctrine of Immaculate Conception, at any rate closely approach it. But since 1854, the great majority of Orthodox reject it as necessary; as implying a false understanding of original sin; as suspecting the doctrine because it seems to separate Mary from the rest of the descendants of Adam and Eve, putting her in a different class. However, if an individual Orthodox today felt impelled to believe it, he could not be termed a heretic for doing so."

As a protestant, I don’t have very many issues with the statements made by your guests about Mary from scripture. We Protestants must begin to embrace Mary because, like all things on earth, she point’s beyond herself to God in Christ, and particularly to the divine feminine in the nature of God. Mary is a gift because she shows us the way to speak of God’s feminine nature. To be sure, Mary is a surrogate, in more ways than one, for God’s self-revelation.

    Catholics honour Mother Mary because
    1. She is the Mother of Jesus, our Lord and deserves our respect.
    2. Her role in our salvation is foretold in Genesis 3:15 when God told the Devil
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
She is the only human being whom God has chosen for His plan to save the fallen human race - Jesus has to be born as a Man to have a lasting binding New Covenant with God as all other Covenants were broken. To be born as a man, Jesus needs to be born of a woman. Mary is obedient to God and said yes. She didn't ask for God's plan. I would and how shall my life be impacted. Who will take care of me when I grow old. Mary trusted God but a sword pierced her heart Luke 2:35 when Jesus was crucified. She gave Jesus his human DNA. So whilst Jesus did the saving, Mary was instrumental in out salvation. If Mary didn't said yes, and some other woman did, then we will honour this other woman none the lesser.
    3. As Jesus is the King of Kings, Mother Mary is the Queen Mother. Just as Bathsheba interceded for the king's subjects in 1 Kings 2:19
When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king's mother, and she sat down at his right hand.
Mother Mary Mary intercedes for all of us. Reference the Wedding at CanaJohn 2 : 1 to 12 when Christ performed His first miracle, even though He initially said it wasnt His time yet. Mother Mary didn't tell Jesus what to do but directs the servants to Jesus, just as she directs us now to Jesus. The focus and glory is always in Jesus. Intercession proves that the final decision and call still lies with God and Mary is not a deity.
    4. God killed Uzzah in 2 Sam 6:6 to 7 for touching the Ark of the Old Covenant :
When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.
Despite doing a good deed by stabilising a falling Ark, Uzzah was deemed unworthy and to have defile the Ark.
The Ark of the old Covenant carried the Word of God in stone. Mother Mary carried the Word of God in flesh. She is thus sinless as she had to carried the Living Word of God in her womb for 9 months. Uzzah was struck dead by a mere touch. What's more 9 months of pregnancy? Thus we honour Mother Mary for carrying the Living Word of God. The sacredness and holiness of the Old Ark was evident by Uzzah's slaying, what's more the New Ark which is carrying Jesus.
    5. Jesus the King of Kings bestowed Queenship on His mother Rev 12 :1
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
This woman is Mary because she is in heaven where God is. The only human being God will allow Queenship in heaven is Jesus's mother - the Queen Mother of the King of Kings. This woman is not the Church as some Protestants claim because in subsequent verses.Rev 12 : 2 to 5 this woman gave birth to a son which will rule all nations and whom the devil wanted to harm but couldn't. The only human that can stand up to the devil is Jesus.
    REV 12 : 2 to 5
And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne
    6. We honour Mother Mary because we are grateful to her for saying Yes to God, when she was still an unmarried woman but had to bear Jesus, thereby being instrumental in the human race's salvation.
    7. We honour Mother Mary because she was obedient to God and is our model of ideal discipleship. She didn't ask for God's detail operation plan, what's going to happen to her when she is found pregnant in old conservative Jewish society, how to answer to Joseph when he found out she is pregnant before their marriage, how is Mary going to live on financially if Joseph divorce her, what role is her son going to undertake etc. Nothing. No details needed. No assurances needed. Just a simple yes to God. And God is pleased with faithful disciples just as He is pleased with Abraham for his faithfulness.
For these reasons, Mother Mary deserves our honour - just as how the Early Church honours her for 1500 years till the Reformation. The Orthodox Christians who broke away from the Catholic Church honours Mother Mary. Martin Luther, the Father of the Protestant Reformation loves Mother Mary, honours her and prays the rosary.
The veneration of Mary is inscribed in the very depths of the human heart. (Sermon, September 1, 1522).
[She is the] highest woman and the noblest gem in Christianity after Christ. ..She is nobility, wisdom, and holiness personified. We can never honor her enough. Still honor and praise must be given to her in such a way as to injure neither Christ nor the Scriptures. (Sermon, Christmas, 1531).
No woman is like you. You are more than Eve or Sarah, blessed above all nobility, wisdom, and sanctity. (Sermon, Feast of the Visitation. 1537).
One should honor Mary as she herself wished and as she expressed it in the Magnificat. She praised God for his deeds. How then can we praise her? The true honor of Mary is the honor of God, the praise of God's grace.. .Mary is nothing for the sake of herself, but for the sake of Christ...Mary does not wish that we come to her, but through her to God. (Explanation of the Magnificat, 1521).
Luther goes even further, and gives the Blessed Virgin the exalted position of "Spiritual Mother" for Christians, much the same as in Catholic piety:
It is the consolation and the superabundant goodness of God, that man is able to exult in such a treasure. Mary is his true Mother, Christ is his brother. God is his father. (Sermon. Christmas, 1522)
Mary is the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of all of us even though it was Christ alone who reposed on her knees...If he is ours, we ought to be in his situation; there where he is, we ought also to be and all that he has ought to be ours, and his mother is also our mother. (Sermon, Christmas, 1529).
Catholics honour Mother Mary but we also believed that Christ is still the only mediator with God. Christ and Christ alone.

As a Protestant, this was really interesting! I didn’t know Catholics had such thought out answers for some of these “problem passages”. Perhaps I’ll have to read their book to get their full perspectives, but I still feel like the prima facie interpretation of passages like Mark 3:31-35, and Luke 11:27-28 have some merit.
Personally, I’ve found John 2:4 to be especially surprising with the language Jesus uses in dialoguing with Mary. The phrase “Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί” [what have I to do with thee?] that Jesus says, as far as I’ve found, is only used between enemies, or those in conflict. The only other time it’s in the New Testament is when demons are talking to Jesus.
I enjoy the hermeneutical tool of typology, I just fear Catholics are a bit to eager to apply it sometimes with Mary. Paul speaks of Christ as the new Adam in 1 Corinthians 15, and you would think it would be the perfect opportunity to mention Mary as the new Eve, but he doesn’t. I guess I could see Mary as the Ark of the Covenant... but I feel like Christ might fulfill that role just as well? idk.
Mary being some regular, teenage girl from the middle of nowhere, and God using her to bring the greatest blessing just because- that feels right as a Protestant lol.

Hi, you might also look into Tim Staples' (once fervent anti-Catholic minister) book, "Behold Your Mother". There is more to the Biblical Mary than what Protestant are aware of. Tim explains the dogmas with a Protestant slant. Tip for you - Mary was already conceived in God's mind way back in the garden of Eden, when he spoke about the redemption after the fall of Adam and Eve.

All you need to know is that Mary is the Mother of God. Ponder that in your heart, it's
no wonder Catholics honor her. Before Vatican II, Catholics just believed what the Church
taught because we knew her doctrine was revealed by God, we didn't need any more proof.

For the record, William Albrecht is NOT an “expert” on Mary. There is a reason he is called the “king of eisegesis.” For example, he believes that Epiphanius of Salamis taught the bodily assumption of Mary, when in reality he wrote that no one knows what happened to Mary at the end of her life. Albrecht had to completely butcher the text where he compares the bodies of Mary to three other saints in order to come up with his eisegesis of the text. And when shown “how” he is wrong, he refuses to acknowledge his error.
