- Berlin is an unconventional city, ever changing and yet forever defined by its turbulent past.
From 1961 to 1989, the Berlin Wall split the city and polarised Germany into two peoples divided by the ideological struggles between East and West. But what is Berlin today? Have the barriers the wall created been broken over three decades later? Is there still an East vs West?
In this edition of Talk to Al Jazeera: In the Field, Stefanie Dekker explores the German capital alongside Berliners who dissect the city’s anti-status quo legacy and how it is reflected in Europe’s - unapologetically - rebel capital.

Al Jazeera has become one of my favorite media outlets. Who would have guessed? Very credible, thorough reporting that digs into relevant and provocative issues, stories and news around the world.
You must be never watching RT
So what's with your provocative pic? Better have a beautiful nature scenery 🏞️😺
...unless it's about Qatar. Don't get me wrong I totally agree. Just wish that they also reported on their home country too. Al Jazeera and AJ+ do good work though I find their middle Eastern and Asia coverage fascinating. Also they are one of the few sites that cover Canada critically which is cool
@@danieloktovian9523 communist channel? Russian propaganda. I ain't watching that.
I think I need to introduce you to RT?
Last 20 years my hometown changed a lot...and not to the best! Proud (west-)Berliner...born and raised in the 80s 💪
Berlin its die beste Stadt.I studied in Saarbrucken, been to Berlin to visit for more than 4 times, keep coming back and planning for the next visit 😀👍
Berlin is a good city because it's the least German feeling one.
Its still very German, but I can't imagine how horribly German the other cities must be.
Berlin, best place for Döner mmmmm...i miss it..
If I could go back in time, I'd pick 1980 and go to West Berlin.
16:46 Can anyone please tell me the name of the location?
I think it's one of the bridges behind the Gesundbrunnen-Center going to either P Berg or Mitte if they don't have these bridges all over the city
Thanks for the reply.
it is at the Bornholmer Straße
@@raiyantausifurrahman2570 You're welcome
There is only one Germany, the strong leader of the European Union. Proud, powerful, godlike.
Beautiful city with great global multicultural atmosphere; Unfortunately FinanceInsuranceRealEstate(FIRE) Capitalism Eventually will have its day with it.
"Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.”

I've lived in Berlin for +2 years and it's very tribal. Unfortunately, most of the people are a walking stereotype of what they are. Those stereotypes rarely overlap with another tribe.
@@ask825 Thanks for your reply but I don't want to stay in this town anymore. Correct me if I'm wrong but all I see is people only hang out with those who look like them
@@ask825 Thanks for your reply but please tell me where I can see such a diverse group of people hanging out together because I've never seen that in a park, in a bar or even in the streets. I grew up in Paris and London and you see diversity everywhere. No disrespect but I feel like you're telling me that Berlin is as diverse as those 2 cities when in fact it's not the case
@@ask825 I'm sorry but Berlin is not that diverse of a city. It might be diverse for a German city and it's still super cliquey. Otherwise I would see it in public places like I mentioned earlier and I've been all over town. I don't even see 3rd generation Turkish-Germans and White-Germans hanging out. Like you said, to each their own experience and this is what I see or don't see
@@alpha791 if you grew up in London and Paris aka so called more diverse cities why did you come to Berlin and complain for a missing was of so called diversity LOL
There's still alot of immigrants in Berlin.
Beautiful rebirth of a city but trust me when I tell you graffiti is a plague!! I'm from old school NY
Graffiti is street art, it's different from tagging
@@AlyxGlide it's all the same whether it's a top to bottom, burner or wild style it belongs in a museum or computer not on people's residents. Germany has too much wonderful history and architecture to be defaced by that stuff. Sorry just my opinion
Jokowi oke
it is not only in Berlin. Europe is West/East divided by values, history and way of life. and i have no intentions accepting those values of the West.
God bless Hungary and Mr. Orban!
Meh
Berlin is an exciting city, but absolutely not a beautiful city. Unfortunately it lost all its luster and beauty in 1945.
